Field July Activities While there wasn't a chapter meeting in July, there were significant activities, including EAA's AirVenture 2015 which was attended by several of our members. We also collected former chapter treasurer Mick Myall's aviation paraphernalia that was donated by his family, identifying the need to have a work party catalog the items for disposition including sale. Volunteers for this activity will be sought at the next chapter meetting. Chapter President Eric Witherspoon visited the Kitfox 7 Super Sport project of Marvin Kea for a Tech Counselor review. Marv is quite far along, with all of the covering and major assembly done. He is in the process of completing the wiring, which at this point largely consists of cleaning up routings and bundles, as most of the wiring is already in place. He's running a non-turbo Rotax for power. He bought the kit "started" by someone else who didn't get very far with it. However, it did have the "quick build" wings which included factory covering. He noted that the paint for the fabric doesn't stick to fiberglass, so he found similar colors in another paint (spray cans) for the cowling, wingtips, and wheel pants. The panel is largely open on the right side for an ipad or other tablettype device. There is a transponder installed, but the unit itself is behind the panel. Control for the transponder is integrated with the large-screen GRT EFIS. He noted that this EFIS is also expected to have an upgrade for ADS-B when the time comes. He currently flies out of TIA, but is strongly considering basing from KAVQ or KRYN in order EAA Chapter 81 Newsletter - Page 1 to make better use of flight time and have fewer distractions during the Phase I flight test period. He's up for having us visit his project once it's out at the airport for a pre-inspection chapter look-over when the time comes. Chapter member Don Berlin let us know, that “after 30+ years building off and on, made the first flight on my Longez Dec. 16, 2014. Fulfilled a dream and flew it to Oshkosh this year!” Don's Longez, N131DB, is based at Ryan Field. Don Berlin's Longez in the Oshkosh lineup Chapter member Steve Hulland spent a few weeks camping at Oshkosh as a volunteer – Here are his notes: Melissa and I spent three+ weeks @ Oshkosh. I spent a good deal of my time volunteering at Flight Line Operations (FLO). FLO's folks generally work in one of two areas. Either "traffic" where they marshal AC directly off the runways to their destinations (AC Parking; AC Camping; Vintage AC; Homebuilts; Warbirds, etc.) Or, AC Parking where they actually park the thousands of AC who do not park at the various type parking areas such. These include, but are not limited to AC Camping; AC Parking; Weeks Hangar; North Forty; Cornfield, etc. FLO'S also marshal all aircraft departing. In short the FLO "traffic" guys and gals handle 95+% of all AC that attend Air Adventure each year at Oshkosh. B-52 arrival We cannot control any flying machine on or crossing an active runway. Without FLO'S folks the Pink Shirts could not make Air Adventure work. Pink Shirts are the paid and qualified FAA Controllers who work the active runways, arrivals and departures - both VA and IFR. We call the "Pink Shirts" "COWS" and are the only ones who get away with doing so! That is because we have great professional and and working respect for each other. The teamwork between us is exceptional. Marvin Kea's Kitfox project The 95+% of pilots who actually read, learn, heed and follow the Oshkosh NOTAM arrival/departure rules also EAA Chapter 81 Newsletter - Page 2 make Oshkosh happen. But oh those 5% who either do not read and follow the NOTAM! From the pilot of a departing G10 jet putting a 3" X 5" card with IFR written in a single black ink line IFR sign in his right pilot window (supposed to be in left window an readable from at least 50') to the pilot who thinks he/she knows the route we will marshal him/along not following the marshaller's directions. Those guys and gals often cause "interesting" and potentially very dangerous SNAFU's. For those who fly to Oshkosh during Air Adventure, I recommend you read and learn each years NOTAM. Then follow the NOTAM rules and the direction you receive as closely as you can without being unsafe. It is not uncommon to handle more than 200 individual aircraft per hour. Also volunteer while at Oshkosh. You will have fun, help make Air Adventure work. You might "earn" many nice to haves. From a good meal, a nice "T" shirt to camping fee breaks and more. For those familiar with the ex USN PB4Y currently based at KATZ being maintained and restored at Gosshawk, you be happy to know this only remaining PB4Y flew to Oshkosh and participated in several air show events. From simulated bomb/torpedo attacks to super flybys. The Owners, Flight Crew and Dave Lindsey Goss flew this beautiful airplane into Whitman Field, Oshkosh. Without their dedication and skills thousands would have missed seeing and hearing a great airplane. You should be able to watch and see the PB4Y at the Copperstate Fly In on October 23rd and 24th. Simply Google Copperstate 2015 to learn more about Copperstate. Copperstate 2015 would be a great place to hold the EAA Chapter 81 meeting. Email me at aztaildragger@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer at Copperstate FLO's. I can use your help and you will learn a skill that is both fun and helps any Fly In succeed. ANNUALS - Owner Assisted Instruction – Maintenance - Consultation Jim Moss A&P IA www.northside-aviation.com/ From member Ed Davis (393-0250 or cell 444-0034) I have an automotive engine work stand that worked beautifully for me to mount my Jabiru 3300 and design my firewall arrangement. Would like to sell this for $25.00. I also have two adjustable stands for mounting upper wings and setting their angle of incidence and dihedral. These are available for use by chapter 81 members. First flight in January, 1995 at Casa Grande Airport where it was built. Phase 1 testing completed in May, 1997. It was put in storage in Casa Grande after testing and not flown until I bought it out of the back of a hangar. After much repair of just storage problems I started flying it and love to fly it. I’m just too big for the airplane. It is comfortable for me but it’s tailheavy when I fly it. It cruises at 95 with a wooden prop and at 90 with the metal prop on it now. The engine log has an entry estimating 500 hours since overhaul entered in 1970 and since that time my EAA Chapter 81 Newsletter - Page 3 mechanic and I show another 124.9 hours in this logbook. The airframe has just 65.4 since new. I am asking just $9500.00 locally and it includes a spare wooden prop and a spare mag. It won 2 trophies at Copperstate in 2009 which I have in my office.
