NADA Retention Review:
One-Year-Old Luxury Models
November’s edition of Perspective is the first in a two-part series that details the oneyear retention performance of all-new or heavily revised luxury models. Mainstream
models will be covered in December’s edition of Perspective.
We’ve provided retention figures for the most popular style level as determined by its
share of new vehicle sales. While retention for other styles (e.g., other trim levels or
body and engine types) within a model lineup may be better or worse than ones
provided, differences are generally small and do little to change the model’s overall
standing relative to either its competitive segment or to the outgoing model.
The retention calculation is a function of a three month average (Sept. – Nov. 2014) of
NADA’s average trade-in value divided by a vehicle’s typically-equipped Manufacturer
Suggest Retail Price (MSRP). Typically-equipped MSRP data was sourced from ALG and
NADA Used Car Guide. Note that a vehicle’s rate of depreciation, and ultimately
retention, is in part a product of the level of discounting at the time of new. As such,
MSRPs do not include any incentives or rebates available at the time of purchase.

ACURA MDX
Updated for 2014, the Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury
SUV with seating for seven. New exterior sheet metal
offers sensuous curves with a revised, refined version
of Acura's trademark grille. LED "jewel eye"
headlights occupy the front corners, while LED
taillights make their way onto the new machine as
well. The 2014 MDX is about 2 inches longer than its
predecessor, with a longer wheelbase as well. The
MDX is narrower as well and the overall impact is of a slimmer, trimmer MDX.
Underneath is a new light truck chassis, devised exclusively for the MDX, while under
hood the previous 300 horsepower 3.7L V6 is replaced by a less powerful 290
horsepower 3.5L V6. While power output fell, fuel economy improved considerably,
rising from 2013’s city and highway figures of 16 and 21 mpg, respectively, to 18 and 27
mpg for the 2014 model.
Retention Report Card
True to form, used value retention for the redesigned 2014 Acura MDX has been very
good. One-year retention for the 2014 MDX Technology 4WD reached 79.8 percent, up
a substantial 5.9 percent from the outgoing model’s 73.9 percent figure. Relative to its
peers, the 2014 MDX’s one-year retention exceeded the Luxury Mid-size Utility segment
average of 72 percent by nearly 8 percent.

ACURA RLX
The Acura RLX is brand new for 2014. As Acura's flagship model, the V6-powered, frontwheel-drive luxury sedan replaces the RL, which went away in 2012. The RLX is equipped
with an abundance of technologies, including new signature Jewel Eye LED headlights
that are brighter and more efficient, and the P-AWS (Precision All-Wheel Steer) system
that improves handling through four-wheel steering. A new direct-injection 3.5L V6

making 310 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of
torque is under hood and is paired with a 6-speed
automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive fuel
economy figures are highly competitive at 20 mpg
city and 31 mpg highway, good for a combined
figure of 24 mpg.
Retention Report Card
Despite its noteworthy qualities, used value
retention for the 2014 Acura RLX has been subpar.
One-year retention for the 2014 RLX Technology stands at 61.3 percent, well below the
Luxury Mid-size car segment average of 66.6 percent.

BMW 4 Series
All new for 2014, the BMW 4 Series takes the place of
the 3 Series coupe and is available in a standard 428i
or optional 435i trim levels. Both trims come with
rear-wheel drive but can be equipped with BMW's
capable xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The base trim
is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder
engine (240 horsepower/255 pound-feet of torque)
while the optional trim is powered by a 3.0-liter
turbocharged I-6 engine (300 horsepower/300 pound-feet of torque). Both engines can
be paired to a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission, for an Environmental
Protection Agency estimated range of 22 mpg city to 35 mpg highway, depending on
engine and transmission selection.
Retention Report Card
Retention for the 2014 BMW 4 series has been average. One-year retention for the 2014
BMW 4 Series Coupe 428i stands at 72.3 percent, slightly above the Upper Sport car
segment average of 71.8 percent.

BMW X5
The BMW X5 was given a host of improvements for
2014. The biggest change was to the exterior, where
the car received quite a bit of new sheet metal,
updating its design while still being recognizably an
X5. Numerous improvements include a lighter chassis
and a more powerful V8 engine on the xDrive50i, now
up to 445 horsepower. The X5 is available with three
different engines; a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine
(300 horsepower), a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine (445 horsepower), and a new
3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 diesel engine (255 horsepower). AWD can be paired to
an 8-speed automatic with manual shift mode or an 8-speed automatic transmission
with paddle shifters. Fuel mileage falls within an EPA estimated range of 16 mpg city to
27 mpg highway.
Retention Report Card
The X5 has traditionally been a solid retention performer and the 2014 model appears
set to keep the trend going. While the 2014 X5’s one-year retention of 80.8 percent is a
modest 1.9 percentage points higher than the outgoing model’s 78.8 percent, it’s nearly
9 percentage points more than the Luxury Mid-size Utility segment average of 72
percent.

Cadillac CTS
The CTS has been given a complete redesign for 2014.
The car is essentially all new from the ground up. The
2014 CTS is longer and lower than the car it replaces,
giving it a sportier stance. Extensive use of lightweight
materials has ensured weight remains in check ―
Cadillac claims the CTS is the lightest vehicle in its
class. The CTS sedan is available with two different
engines; a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder
(272 horsepower) and an optional 3.6-liter V6 (321 horsepower). A 6-speed automatic

(optional 8-speed) transmission, mated to standard RWD (AWD optional), enables the
CTS Sedan to achieve an EPA estimated 19 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
Retention Report Card
Similar to the Acura RLX, retention for the 2014 Cadillac CTS is below average. At 60.9
percent, one-year retention for the CTS Luxury V6 is nearly 6 percent lower than the old
design’s 66.7 percent, and is also well below the 66.6 percent average of the luxury midsize car segment. The CTS’ weak retention is due in part to the model’s higher MSRP,
which jumped by more than $14,000 over the outgoing model.

Cadillac ELR
All new for 2014, the Cadillac ELR is a luxury sports
coupe equipped with plug-in hybrid technology. The
ELR is powered by a combination of a 1.4-liter
combustion engine and electric drive unit producing
157 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Front
-wheel-drive, paired with a 1-speed automatic
transmission, enables a total range of 300 miles.
Charging can be done with 120 volt (12.5-18 hour
charge time) or 240 volt outlets (5 hour charge time). Running strictly on gasoline, the
ELR’s city and highway mpg figures are 31 and 35, respectively. Fuel economy rises to an
82 miles per gallon equivalent when operating on battery power.
Retention Report Card
An ambitious MSRP, falling gasoline prices and a segment loaded with better known
models have all contributed to a low retained value for the ELR. One-year retention for
the 2014 Cadillac ELR Luxury stands at 59.7 percent, which is roughly 11 percentage
points below the Luxury Sport car segment average. It should be noted, the ELR’s
retention is considerably better for consumers who elected to purchase, as the federal
tax credit available on the model lowered the point of entry by $7,500.

Infiniti Q50
New for 2014, the Infiniti Q50 is a sedan that boasts
classic Infiniti luxury blended with a sporty flare. The
Q50 is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine that produces
328 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. A 7speed automatic transmission is paired to RWD (AWD
is optional) to enable an EPA estimated 20 mpg city
and 29 mpg highway.
Retention Report Card
Retention for the 2014 Infiniti Q50 is slightly above average. One-year retention for the
Infiniti Q50 Premium V6 is 72.4 percent, more than 5 percent above the 67.0 percent

Jaguar F-Type
Jaguar's new F-Type convertible is a bold exercise in
building the perfect sports car. The Jaguar F-TYPE is a
two-seat roadster available in Standard, S and V8 S
trim levels. The standard F-TYPE is powered by a 3.0liter supercharged V6 (340 horsepower/332 poundfeet of torque) and the S trim is equipped with a
tuned version of the same engine (380
horsepower /339 pound-feet of torque). For
increased performance, Jaguar offers a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that yields 495
horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel-drive is paired to an 8-speed
QuickShift transmission for fuel mileage within an EPA estimated range of 16 mpg city to
28 mpg highway, depending on engine selection.
Retention Report Card
Retention for the 2014 Jaguar F-Type is slightly below average. One year retention for
the F-Type Convertible Standard 3.0L V6 is 70.7 percent, just over 1 percent below the
Upper Sport car segment average of 71.8 percent. It bears noting that retention for the
sportier – and more expensive – F-Type S V6 and V8 style levels is moderately higher at
74.5 and 76.7 percent, respectively.

Lexus IS
The Lexus IS 350 and 250 sedans are completely
redesigned for 2014, with exterior styling that is
much more aggressive due to a pinched, angular
grille and rocker panels that flow seamlessly up and
into the rear wheel arches. The IS 250 and 350 ride
on an all-new, slightly longer chassis and is available
in either rear- or all-wheel drive with their power
plants remaining unchanged. The IS 250 soldiers on
with its 204 horsepower 2.5L V6, while the IS 350 remains with its 306-hp 3.5L V6. The
previous 6-speed automatic transmission carries over as well, though rear-wheel-drive
IS 350s now come equipped with an 8-speed direct-shift automatic. The 6-speed manual
transmission has been discontinued. Fuel mileage for the IS 250 falls within an EPA
estimated 19 mpg city to 30 mpg highway, depending on drivetrain and transmission
selection. Fuel economy for the RWD IS 350 ranges between 19 mpg city and 28 mpg
highway.
Retention Report Card
Retention for the Lexus IS has historically been at or near the top of its class and the
2014 redesign has done nothing to change this long-running trend. One year retention
for the 2014 Lexus IS 250 stands at 75.3 percent, essentially equal to the 2013 model’s
one year retention of 75.6 percent. While the discrepancy with the outgoing model is
tight, the premium over the Near Luxury car segment average is a considerable 8.3
percentage points.

standard CLA-Class is powered by a 2.0-liter
turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 208
horsepower, while AMG trims are powered by a 2.0liter turbocharged I-4 engine that produces 335
horsepower. Both engines are mated to 7-speed
automatic transmissions, enabling the CLA to achieve
fuel economy within an EPA estimated range of 23
mpg city to 38 mpg highway.
Retention Report Card
The CLA’s coupe-like silhouette, aggressive front-end and appealing price point have
translated into impressive new sales and retention figures for Mercedes’ entry-level car.
One-year retention for the 2014 CLA250 is an outstanding 81.4 percent, which is more
than 14 percent higher than the Near-Luxury car segment average of 67 percent.
Retention for the 2014 CLA is by far the highest in its class, besting the second place
Lexus IS by more than 6 percent.
