Our goal is to provide quality dance training that helps to develop your child’s balance, flexibility, memory skills, presentation skills, confidence and self-esteem. We do this with an emphasis on fun and a love of the art form. We welcome both boys and girls into our programs and feel that with a little hard work each year of dance can be rewarding in many ways. We provide professional instruction to students from 3 years to adult. We adhere to the guidelines of the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD) and the examination program of the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD). HIGHLAND DANCING The dancers learn the Traditional steps and movements of the basic Dances Highland Fling Ghillie Callum – The Sword Dance Sean Triubhas * Strathspey * Highland Reel * Reel of Tulloch These dances are seen at most Highland Games and are primarily dances created by Soldiers and Highlanders as celebrations of success in war and hunt. SCOTTISH NATIONALS While there are many more lesser-known dances, the dancers will focus on eight dances used in competition and examinations. These dances are lighter in style than the Highland dances and are often a dance of honour or accompanied by a story. Flora MacDonald’s Fancy Scotch Measure - A Twa’some Wilt Thou Go To The Barracks Johnny? Blue Bonnets O’er the Border * * * * Scottish Lilt The Village Maid The Earl of Errol Heilan’ Laddie In addition, two other dances often seen at the Highland Games are taught The Sailor’s Hornpipe * Irish Jig (in Scottish Style) TRADITIONAL STEP DANCING Here the intricate patterns of “foot stomping” to the family fiddle at a kitchen Ceilidh (party) are taught. We teach in the styles of Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. TARTAN TOTS A program for 3 & 4 year olds. This is a half-hour class consisting of movement to music, learning to count and pattern. Highland movements are introduced as the year progresses. Page 1 THE DANCE INSTRUCTORS Our Teachers are all seasoned performers and have been successful competitors. The annual costume fee helps purchase new pieces and assist with the cleaning and upkeep. ALL DANCERS All dancers pay a $50 costume fee at registration towards performance & competition costume loans & upkeep. This will be refunded if the dancer withdraws during the first term. COSTUME RENTALS A 6-month (max.) costume loan is available for new and growing dancers. We will rent costumes to non-dancers for special events. The British Association of Teachers Dancing (BATD) is recognized worldwide as a registered organization since 1892. BATD offers an exam program in many dance forms. CANADIAN THISTLE DANCE COMPANY The Company is a group of Premier level dancers participating in new Choreography, Performances and Competition. Directed & choreographed by Miss Jessica & Mrs Dent, the troupe has been successful throughout the Province. Membership in the Company requires a sincere commitment and loyal attendance. The Company often performs with local Celtic artists & Pipe Bands. Page 6 COMPETITIONS Participating in Competitions is encouraged as they give the dancers a goal and a reason to improve technique. However, entry is strictly the dancer’s and family’s choice. We like our dancers, when ready, to try competition for a few events before making a decision whether or not to compete. Learning to win well, and lose with grace, is all part of the dance and life experience. It takes a lot of practice to do both well! • Dancers must have the Director’s approval before entering their first competition • All dancers must be registered with ScotDance Canada (Ontario). This is the governing body for Highland Dancing in Canada and is the registration liaison for the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing in Scotland. This registration is renewed on an annual basis This registration allows the dancer to compete worldwide • Many competitions also require that you be a member of their organization to be eligible to complete. Please ask for guidance. • Entries will be emailed to you as soon as available. A list of upcoming competitions & events is posted on the front lobby Bulletin Board. This will help you see where other studio dancers are participating. It is your responsibility to submit your dancer’s entry form. “First to enter is last to dance” so decide & enter quickly. • You will be given a helpful worksheet before your first competition and our more experienced families will also be willing to guide you through the event. • Competitions are broken into Categories and sub-divided by age. Dancers will always be competing with others at the same level and similar age: PRIMARY BEGINNERS Dancers ages 4 years to 6 years Status until dancer wins at least one 1st, 2nd or 3rd placing at 6 different competitions or 6 months (whichever is greater) NOVICE Status until dancer wins at least one 1st, 2nd or 3rd placing at 6 different competitions or 6 months (whichever is greater) INTERMEDIATE Status held for one year from the date of the first intermediate competition use this year wisely PREMIER The highest level - Can be divided into A & B with specified restrictions To compete beyond Primary/preliminary Beginner Level, dancers MUST take 2 or more lessons per week \ Page 7 LESSON DATES & HOLIDAYS Lessons Begin: Weekly Lessons End: No Lessons Scheduled: Monday September 10, 2012 Thursday June 20, 2013 THANKSGIVING HALLOWE’EN CHRISTMAS (2 weeks) FAMILY DAY SPRING BREAK (1 week) EASTER VICTORIA DAY Lessons as usual: Lessons rescheduled: Monday Oct 3, Wed. Bathroom Visits Dancers, especially wee ones, should go to the bathroom before class. This is all part of preclass preparation. Exits during class are disruptive & often cause a chain reaction. Behaviour The Studio will not tolerate bullying, fighting or inappropriate language in the change room, studios or waiting areas. Such behaviour should be reported to the staff immediately. The Students will be held accountable and the Parents consulted as to solutions. Timely Arrival Students should arrive 10-15 min. before class to dress, stretch and go to the bathroom so they are ready to dance at the scheduled lesson time. Leaving the Building Dancers under the age of 16 MUST have a parent or guardian come into the studio to pick them up. No dancer may wait outside or leave unaccompanied. Page 8 PERFORMANCES Performance is an essential part of dance training. Its an opportunity to display skills, develop stage presence and self-confidence. We are often asked to perform for Scottish dinners & concerts, Seniors’ residences, Hospitals, Robbie Burns Day, Weddings, with Pipe Bands & Celtic Bands and more. Since these are a learning experience, 1 or 2 performances may be counted as lessons. All dancers are asked to perform as often as possible with some priority given to the Canadian Thistle Dance Company and competitive, experienced dancers. There is a recital held every second year THE BOOSTER ASSOCIATION & FUNDRAISING What is the Booster Association? The parents & families of the MacLeod of Lewis Dancers working together to raise funds for dancers’ field trips, specialty costuming or props, general bursaries, workshops and more. The funds are raised and maintained separate from the dance studio. Payments for Performances and fun events at the studiio (eg: movie & pizza night) make up a large part of the fundraising. Why a Booster Association? To help defray the overall cost of participation in special events and competitions and build new friendships within the studio How much Fundraising? A minimum. The Booster Assn. aims to make the fundraisers appealing and not to overwhelm you, your friends or family. You may get involved as much or as little as desired but we do ask each family participate.
