Institutional Profile 4 sport club corinthians paulista introduction// Bags packed for Japan We have prepared an institutional profile so that the everyone would have a chance to know more about this veritable nation: Corinthians. This publication will enable the reader to better understand the passion of more than 33 million loyal corinthianos or Corinthian supporters Another indication of the dimension of the Parque São Jorge Club, also known as Timão, is the 160,000 m2 occupied by its social facilities. Valued at more than R$ 1 billion, the Corinthians brand is the leader in the ranking of Brazilian football clubs. The professionalization process that has been underway for the last five years has put the club in the black, with a surplus of R$ 5.3 million in 2011 alone. We are also building the Arena Corinthians. This gigantic stadium, which holds 68,000 people, will host the opening of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The strength of Corinthians' professional football is made evident by its conquests. Just to mention the most recent ones: we won the 2011 Brazilian Championship, as well as the 2012 Libertadores da América Cup. For the FIFA Club World Cup, we intend to take more than 15 thousand corinthianos to Japan, where they will be joined by the thousands of other supporters who live in the Land of the Rising Sun. Corinthians plays its opening game in the tournament on December 12th, 2012, in Toyota. We want to conquer the planet with our passionate and competitive world class football Institutional Profile 5 Letter from the president Welcome to the world of black and white. We would like to show just how great our Club is. We will show a nation’s passion for Corinthians, represented by more than 33 million supporters. Corinthians has the third largest sporting goods sponsorship in the world – from Nike –, and our jersey is one of the five most valuable in the world. In Brazil, our brand is worth more than R$ 1 billion, the highest in the club ranking. In the land of football, Corinthians accounts for 60% of the audience for TV broadcasts of football games. It is the only club seen on open TV on a weekly basis, with club matches transmitted by Rede Globo de Televisão. Our activities extend beyond professional football. We invest heavily in amateur sports, in particular in swimming, futsal and American football. Our swimmer Thiago Pereira, for example, brought back a silver medal from the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In MMA (mixed martial arts), we have had a contract with Anderson Silva, UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) middleweight champion since 2006. In 2012, we strengthened the team by contracting Júnior Cigano, current UFC heavyweight champion. We also have a tradition in sports such as judo, tamburello and bocce. Our 79 year involvement in rowing has made us four-time world champion in the Masters category of the sport. The Club goes far beyond football. Corinthians has an area of more than 500 thousand m² at their disposal at three different sites: Parque São Jorge, the club social headquarters, with almost 160 thousand m²; another area of 176 thousand m² at the Tietê EcoPark, where we have built one of the most modern training centres in the world, the CT Joaquim Grava; and the Arena Corinthians, our longawaited stadium, which will host the opening of the biggest global event in football, the 2014 FIFA World cup. Once again we are crossing borders looking for yet another title, two-times world club champion. This time in the Land of the Rising Sun Enjoy your read! In the land of football, Corinthians accounts for 60% of the audience for TV broadcasts of football games. It is the only club seen on open TV on a weekly basis Mário Gobbi President, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista Institutional Profile 7 champion of champions Corinthians combines professionalism and passion, confirming its status as a world class club The passion of the Corinthian supporter is in his or her blood. This has been the case since September 1st 1910, when five blue-collar workers – Joaquim Ambrósio, Carlos da Silva, Rafael Perrone, Antônio Pereira and Anselmo Correia – together with eight other young men founded the Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, after seeing a match featuring an English football team. From a small amateur club like so many others founded in the first decade of the 20th century, Corinthians prospered, started playing official games and made the switch from amateur to professional football in 1933. The professionalization of the club’s administration came more recently. From a social club, Corinthians was to be transformed into a true phenomenon, capable of attracting a following of 33 million supporters in Brazil and worldwide. It currently has the second largest fan base in the country and the largest in São Paulo, the main economic and financial centre of Latin America. As in 1910, today Corinthians is immediately associated with football, the main attraction it offers its supporters and other audiences. It became the first International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) world champion by the rules established by this organization in 2000. The team has won five Brazilian Championships, in 1990, 1998, 1999, 2005 and 2011, and three Brazilian Cups, in 1995, 2002 and 2009. 2012 saw another first for the Timão: the conquest of the Libertadores da América Cup. The club ended the twentieth century as the leading São Paulo state champion and is the record holder in state victories, with a total of 26 titles. Since its foundation by five football-crazy workers, Timão has never stopped winning titles. The team is the São Paulo state championship record holder, with 26 wins profile // OUR traditions Cloaked in legend, Corinthians has become one of the most admired clubs in Brazil. Devotion to St. George and the water from the famed fountain have maintained this one hundred year-old tradition Fountain The historical Parque São Jorge fountain existed before the land on the banks of the River Tietê was acquired in the 1920s. Over time, the tradition developed whereby fathers would take their children to drink its holy water and baptize them Corinthians. St. george the Protector St. George, our eternal patron saint, is known for his devotion to the Christian faith, as are the millions of faithful Corinthians supporters. São Jorge also inspired the name of the stadium and the São Jorge district in Tatuapé on São Paulo's east side, where the club is located. The site also has a chapel built in tribute to the warrior saint. Mascot The Musketeer was chosen as mascot for our club many years ago. On June 2nd 1929, the journalist Thomaz Mazzoni, writing in the newspaper A Gazeta Esportiva celebrated the “fibre of true musketeers” shown by the team in the club’s first ever international victory (3-1 against Argentina’s Barracas at Parque São Jorge). The nickname Fazendinha came from the small farm on the grounds, whose farmhouse was to become meeting place for members. The stadium is named in honour of Alfredo Schürig, Corinthian’s president from 1930 to 1933. He was considered to be the Club's guardian angel at a time when it was switching to 16 sport club corinthians paulista professional football. With financial support from club members, he helped ensure that Fazendinha was concluded and settle club debts over a 12year period. The setting for 484 Corinthians games, with a highly positive balance of 356 wins, 65 draws and 63 losses, Fazendinha saw its last game on August 3rd, 2002. The Timão beat Brasiliense by 1-0. The biggest ever crowd was recorded in 1962, at the classic Corinthians 1 x 2 Santos match, attended by 27,384 supporters. Institutional Profile 17 //arena corinthians Getting ready for the 2014 fifa World Cup The new stadium, compliant with sustainability standards, will be ready by the end of 2013 The new Corinthians stadium is already becoming a reality. The 48 thousand person arena is under construction in a 200,000 m² area in Itaquera on São Paulo’ east side. Work should be concluded by December 2013. Six months later, on June 12th, 2014, the Timão stadium will be the stage for the opening of the FIFA World Cup. For the most important event in world football, the stadium will receive an additional 20,000 seats, which will be removed when the Cup is over. Fifa requires a 65,000 person seating capacity for the opening game. The stadium will be ready to receive the 32 heads of state representing the countries disputing the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Stadium plans include infrastructure to enable up to five thousand journalists from all over the world to work simultaneously. The budget for the venture was R$ 820 million. Corinthians will finance this over ten 18 sport club corinthians paulista years with a three-year grace period. The remainder will come from tax incentives to be granted by the São Paulo city government after the inauguration of the stadium. The stadium plans are fully compliant with Fifa stipulated sustainability standards. These include solutions and technologies that ensure the rational use of raw materials, such as water economy, harvesting of rain water, reduction and recycling of waste, sustainable use of energy, as well as natural ventilation and illumination. The architect responsible for the stadium, Aníbal Coutinho, has incorporated Timão tradition and history into his design. The field, for example, will be exactly 777 meters above sea level, a tribute to the Fazendinha site, located at Rua São Jorge, 777. The number also evokes 1977, the year Corinthians won the São Paulo championship after a dry spell of 22 years. arena corinthians// High technology in the new stadium, with rational use of natural resources and waste recycling Institutional Profile 19 //Professional management An open game with the fans The step change in Club management has driven efficiency, transparency and openness Upon taking office in October 2007, the Board made a commitment to efficient, open management with permanent accountability –the financial statements are available on the Internet – and involvement of the members in the daily running of the club. In order to fulfil this mission, profound administrative changes and new governance rules were introduced. Corinthians' bylaws were reformulated and have been in effect since September 2008. These entitle Club members to vote directly for president and establish a three-year mandate without the right to re-election, among other modernization measures. The changes in the bylaws, among the most modern and democratic in the world, represent a milestone in the club’s history. The document provided a legal basis for strengthening the management professionalization process, making it more transparent and efficient. In this period, important 20 sport club corinthians paulista results were achieved, and past errors corrected. Another significant aspect of the current governance model at Corinthians is the fact that the Board and executive committees comprise independent, non-paid members. Management is divided into five areas in line with the parameters set forth in the bylaws (General Meeting, Deliberative Council, Orientation Council, Fiscal Council and Board of Directors). The bylaws promote permanent accountability and the involvement of fans with the team and the Club. A year marked by reformulations in amateur football, heavy investment in infrastructure for professional football and the remodelling of the club facilities. The seeds sown will reap large rewards in the near future. Corinthians had a robust year in professional football. It came second in the São Paulo Championship and won the Brazilian Championship for the fifth time. A competitive, winning team drives sales of branded Corinthians products and strengthens the club's bargaining power in negotiations with sponsors and TV channels. With the team disputing titles, the crowds at the stadium grow. Investments have been undertaken and the return is in sight. With the CT Joaquim Grava, for example, Corinthians will no longer have expenses with lodgings. The CT will also ensure income through rentals to Brazilian and international teams during confederation cups and the FIFA World Cup. According to initial forecasts, the Arena in Itaquera should generate an annual income of around R$ 100 million for the Club. Similarly, the reformulation of amateur football at Corinthians will boost the number of new talents revealed. Last but not least, the remodelling of the Club has ensuring the preservation of its assets. The surplus in Club accounts is a major achievement. In 2011 alone, this surplus reached R$ 5.3 million. The situation is very different from 2007, when the Club's deficit was R$ 23.2 million. In 2011, total revenues were R$ 290.5 million, 117% up on 2007. Since 2008, the Club has balanced its indebtedness and boosted investments. Transparent management aqui é corinthians!!! sport club corinthians paulista relatório de sustentabilidade 2011 24 sport club corinthians paulista Corinthians started publishing an annual sustainability report in 2009, driven by the spirit of transparency and accountability that characterizes its management. We were the first club in the world to release this type of report in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a multistakeholder organization that proposes a global standard for reporting information that goes beyond the merely financial. The report was originally intended mainly for investors, financial institutions, business partners, sector associations and other clubs. However, we noted a growing interest among other stakeholders, which may be explained by the passion stirred by football and everything related to Corinthians. All of these reports are available on our website (http://tinyurl.com/d3ss6ry), in Portuguese, English, Spanish and Chinese. “I have seen Corinthians win, I have seen Corinthians lose. But I have never seen Corinthians give up.” Mário Sérgio Corinthians coach in 1993 and 1995 Institutional Profile 25 //Football The titles say it all The titles won in recent years are undeniable proof of Corinthians’ strength The fifth Brazilian Championship title, won on December 4th, 2011 at Pacaembu Stadium before a crowd of 36,708 was a crowning achievement: Corinthians has been the best performing team in the Brazilian Championship since its return to the A Series. The figures are undeniable and speak for themselves. In the 2009, 2010, and 2011 championships, Timão won 54 of the 114 matches it played, totalling 191 points. The only other teams to come close were Internacional, with 183 points, and Fluminense (180 points). Once again, Corinthians showed it deserved the title “Champion of Champions”. The years from 2008 to 2011 were replete with major achievements, with an average of one championship title per year: Brazilian B Series Champion in 2008, undefeated São Paulo State Champion and Brazil Cup Champion in 2009, and a fifth Brazilian Championship title in 2011. Timão was also the vice-champion in the Brazil Cup in 2008, and in the State Championship in 2011. Defender Chicão, key player in the five titles won between 2008 and 2012 26 sport club corinthians paulista Libertadores is ours On July 4th, Corinthians won the Libertadores da América Cup for the first time ever before a crowded Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo. The team savoured the unprecedented taste of victory in this competition after a 2-0 win against Argentina's Boca Juniors. Emerson Sheik's goals were the crowning glory of a brilliant campaign: with eight wins and six draws, making Corinthians the undefeated champion. With this triumph, Timão proved that it had finally overcome the trauma of relegation to the B series in 2007, consolidating its superiority in the country under the command of head coach Tite (Adenor Leonardo Bacchi). The victory cry had been stuck in the Corinthian supporters' throat for 35 years. The Parque São Jorge team's first participation in the continental tournament was in 1977. Repeated letdowns in the Cup marred an otherwise successful track record, but redemption came in the sweetest form possible. Corinthians overcame the major obstacle to Brazilian hopes in the competition, gaining the title without losing a game. In addition to a brand new trophy on the Club shelf, the cup entitles Corinthians to a place in the FIFA Club World Cup. In December 2012, the team will be going to Japan to dispute the title of best team in the world. Institutional Profile 27 //futebol 2012 Players Goalkeepers • Cássio (Cassio Ramos – 06/06/87). Corinthians has a tradition of moulding star players from the youth football teams, such as Rivellino, Vladimir, Ronaldo Giovanelli, Casagrande and many others. The Club has always placed high value on developing new talent, and it is not by chance that Corinthians has been the most successful team in the São Paulo Youth Football Cup, winning eight championship titles between 1969 and 2012. This record attracts young talents from all over the country. And the Club has to be prepared to offer them the best possible environment in which to develop. In recent years, football has been undergoing many changes due to the internationalization of the sport, the Pelé Law and ongoing professionalization in related sectors. Corinthians has played a key role in this movement, transforming its amateur football program, including the youth football categories. One of the main changes has been the creation of the Football Coaching Coordination unit, which is independent from the administrative area. The aim is to develop activities that produce sustainable medium and long term results. This new philosophy includes groundbreaking new software that is being developed exclusively for Corinthians. This software will store all information about the amateurs together with existing data on the professional players, from the moment the players are contracted, covering their physical condition, specific technical skills and performance in training and matches, right down to information about their managers’ track records. Currently, more than 170 young people are playing for Corinthian's youth football teams. Some of them are enrolled in a private school located in São Paulo's Penha district. In addition to regular studies, the young players receive psychological counselling and a health plan. They are also supported by a social assistant who is responsible for taking care of their individual needs regarding a living allowance, transportation and meals. “This has become a second skin to me. I couldn’t get rid of it even if I wanted to.” Marcelinho Carioca, after the Brazil Cup title in 1995 Youth victories The main achievement for Corinthians' amateur football in 2011 was the second under-17 club world title, with a 2-1 win against Barcelona. The championship was held in Spain. The Corinthian's team, commanded by the coach Zé Augusto, ended the tournament without losing a game. In Brazil, the U12 team won the Volkswagen Junior Masters Cup, entitling it to represent the country in the global phase of the competition, held in Poland in 2012. The Corinthians boys won the eighth São Paulo Youth Football Cup title in 2012, with a 2-1 win against Fluminense, before a Pacaembu stadium packed with more than 37 thousand loyal supporters. Institutional Profile 29 // Supporters 30 sport club corinthians paulista there is only one FIEL The biggest supporter base in Brazil is also the Club's main asset Corinthians do not live for titles, Corinthians live for Corinthians. This slogan is from an advertising campaign aired after Corinthians won its fifth Brazilian Championship title in December 2011. It conveys the feelings of over 30 million fans who are crazy about their Timão, and who support the black and white colours of the Parque São Jorge team no matter what. The biggest demonstration that being a Corinthian is more important than winning titles came during the dry spell lasting 22 years, eight months and seven days in which the "Fiel" were unable to shout “We are the champions”. Even with the dearth of major titles between 1954 and 1977, the band of passionate fans continued to grow in number and spread throughout Brazil. In 1976, in the semi-final against Fluminense, 80,000 Fiel warriors made the trip to Rio's Maracanã stadium. Known as the “Corinthian Invasion”, this episode is considered to be the largest ever movement of people during peacetime. Currently, the title of largest supporter base in Brazil is shared by Corinthians and Flamengo. Until 2010, the fan base of the Rio de Janeiro team was larger. However, an Ibope survey of Brazilian teams published in October 2011 showed a draw between Corinthians and Flamengo. The survey was conducted in 12 Brazilian metropolitan regions and the results show that Corinthians and Flamengo are preferred by 13% of fans. The survey was based on interviews with 18,000 people representing 100 million Brazilians aged over 10. People's Republic of Corinthians In November 2011, one year after it was founded, the People’s Republic of Corinthians elected its first president from among 192 candidates in an open, democratic election: all 12,074 Corinthians citizens were entitled to vote online. The president has developed a governance plan aimed at promoting activities to engage Fiel supporters and drive social actions. His proposal includes a periodic letter for supporters, creation of a Supporters' Day and the Sangue Corinthiano (Corinthian Blood) social project. The challenges chosen as a platform are part of the list of 18 items suggested by the Corinthian Nation via the social networks and official Club channels. “I will never forget these supporters. The Popular Republic of Corinthians is an excellent example, proven by the awards won. The advertising campaign “Popular Republic of Corinthians”, created by the agency F/Nazca S&S, won the Bronze Lion Award at the International Cannes Festival (France), as well as two Grand Prix at the El Ojo de Iberoamérica Festival in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Internally, the Republic launched the Saint George’s Arms Award, with prizes of arms used by the Corinthian's patron saint for the best online Corinthian environments in each of the following categories: blog, community, website, and Twitter account. Corinthians in Japan The FIFA Club World Cup will begin in December, but Corinthian supporters living in Japan have organized a number of activities to take the edge off their anxiety until Timão arrives in the Land of the Rising Sun. These included a barbecue held at the entrance to the stadium in Toyota in which Corinthians will play its first game, and a five-hour excursion by 50 fans to Mount Fuji. They hoisted Corinthians flags on the mountain to herald the Club's coming to Japan and to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the opening of a branch of Gaviões, the main Corinthians' supporter organization, in the country. The activities in Japan were organized by the branch office in Tokyo. stakeholders// Torcedores ocupam o centro da cidade de São Paulo na festa de cem anos do clube, em 2010 Relationship networks Communications between Corinthians and its diverse stakeholders have been intensified in recent years, with the establishment of a wide-ranging, wellstructured network designed to promote dialogue with each stakeholder group – supporters, employees, members, vendors, the media, banks, TV stations, the professional team and players' agents. Actions developed include the Fiel Torcedor (Loyal Supporter) programme, which offers members discounts on ticket purchases and exclusive kits, reinforcing the club strategy of serving the supporter. Launched in December 2008, the programme has expanded greatly. There are currently more than 80,000 users, of which approximately 45,000 are up-todate with payment. The Poderoso Timão store chain has kept up with this growth. The number of stores increased from 12 in 2008 to 113 in 2011. Revenues from the chain, which was created in October 2008, have topped the R$ 178 million mark. The virtual store (www.shoptimao.com.br) has matched this performance, with revenues of more than R$ 9 million in 2011, R$ 1 million of which from royalties. The Club has seen a significant increase in revenues from its brand, with ticket sales soaring from R$ 5.5 million in 2003 to R$ 27 million in 2011, a growth rate of 391%. Revenues from television broadcast rights reached R$ 79 million in 2011, a 210% increase over 2008. TV for a nation The first Brazilian TV channel dedicated exclusively to a sports club and supporters was launched in March 2011. This is TV Corinthians (TVC), a partnership between TV+ and Corinthians. The channel, with its 250 m2 studio, is based in Parque São Jorge. Programming is centred on the sports in which Corinthians is engaged, as well as the Club's social and cultural activities. The main focus, however, is professional football, with reports on training, games, stories involving 34 sport club corinthians paulista the Club and interviews with past and present players. Social causes Corinthians is acutely aware of its social responsibilities and its role in shaping a new generation of supporters prepared to enter the ranks of the most passionate club in the world: the Corinthian Nation. Chute Inicial (Kickoff) and Time do Povo (People's Team) are two of the social projects implemented by the club. Chute Inicial is the largest chain of licensed football schools in Brazil. In these schools, Corinthians teaches children the values intrinsic to sports: socialization, learning how to win and lose, friendship, the objective being to help build the children’s character and develop a sense of community. The program now has a total of 76 units and over 13,000 students. Revenues in 2011 were R$ 1,243,000, compared with R$ 1,067,000 in 2010. Time do Povo is a groundbreaking social project that forges closer bonds between Corinthians and children with special needs from underprivileged communities. To offer these children a special experience, the Club launched its A Day with Corinthians project in May 2011. The boys and girls visit the Club's facilities, tour the Memorial, take part in events and cheer for the team at Pacaembu Stadium. The events held in 2011 benefited more than 1,000 children. Requests to participate come not only from the Corinthians players pose with anti-racism banner before kickoff metropolitan region, but also from day care centres and communities in São Paulo state and further afield. Corinthians provides the participants with transportation back and forth in a bus rented by the club, lunch, a snack, admission to the game and a support team comprising volunteers and club employees. The visits are fully monitored and the children also receive a project t-shirt, gifts and food to take home. The project is supported by strategic partners and sponsors, such as the Poderoso Timão store, which gives the children T-shirts sporting the project logo. These are then autographed when the children meet the players. In addition to the autographs, the children also receive a kilogram each of Corinthian brand rice and beans, provided by Broto Legal, a company responsible for controlling pesticide levels in food. Children visiting the Pacaembu Stadium are provided with snacks and soft drinks by Pop Ice, a stadium food concessionaire. In addition to traditional dates such as Children's Day and Christmas, the Time do Povo project supports events such as the Teleton (a television marathon to raise funds and support for the AACD, an organization that assists disabled children), McHappy Day and charities such as Instituto Sou da Paz and Criança Esperança. To calculate the value of the brand, the consultancy computes three sets of data (club revenues, characteristics of supporters and the market in which the team operates) and a further 18 items. The consultancy does not include revenues from the sale of players, which are considered to be non-operating revenue. The numbers not only indicate that Corinthians is at the top of the pyramid, but also show continuous growth. Between 2004 and 2011, the Corinthians brand grew 203%, while Flamengo and São Paulo appreciated by 113% and 95% respectively. The consolidation of the club's leadership in 2012 was the direct result of increased marketing revenues, TV broadcast rights for Corinthians games and club revenues. Work on strengthening the Corinthians brand has been constant. A wide-reaching, ambitious action plan has driven diverse initiatives over the last four years. These include new standards governing business deals and relations with sponsors, which have served as a model for other Brazilian clubs. On an international level, at US$ 77 million, the Corinthians brand is in 24th place among the world's football clubs, according to a May 2012 survey conducted by the English consultancy Brand Finance, specialized in assessing brands.
