Food For Free 11 Inman Street Cambridge, MA 02139 e the Dat v a e! S Food For Free The Party Under the Harvest Moon will be Friday, October 25 at MIT’s Morss Hall. Join us for great food, live music, and a chance to support our Produce Rescue program. Annual Report 2012 PROGRAMS Produce Rescue and Distribution Each morning, our drivers visit grocery stores and other food vendors to collect donations of fresh foods that might otherwise go to waste. Several days a week, their route includes the wholesalers of the New England Produce Center in Chelsea. In addition to fresh produce, we collect fresh and frozen meats, prepared foods, baked goods, and dairy products. This salvaged food is transported immediately to the food programs we serve, usually going home with a family or being served at a meal program within 24 hours of collection. May through November, we work with ten farmers’ markets, rescuing food from more than 40 farms and retailers. We also work closely with Boston Area Gleaners, distributing much of the produce that they glean from local farms. We supplement this “rescued” food with fruit and vegetables purchased wholesale. Much of the funding for our food purchases comes from the City of Cambridge City Food Fund. This program provided 998,000 pounds of food to 84 emergency food programs in 2012. This year’s expansion of Home Delivery is made possible both by our partnership with Boston Organics, and by the work of Max Wall, our Home Delivery Coordinator. Whether she is planning the annual budget, weeding at Field of Greens, engaging in strategic planning, or loading boxes of produce into the trucks, Sasha brings her strong presence, her skill for visioning, and her knack for forging connections. Sasha’s diverse background includes 15 years as a software engineer and product manager, followed by co-founding Plato’s Harvest organic farm with her husband in 2006 and completing an MBA in Sustainability in 2011. Her commitment to improving access to fresh, healthy foods has guided her work with local foodoriented businesses and organizations like Sprout Lenders, Dig It Local, and Fair Food Network, and now, her work with Food For Free. Having first joined Food For Free as a volunteer, Max is now deploying his easygoing friendliness and thoroughness to perform outreach to potential clients, organize data, and manage inventory. Max completed a year of self-directed study in fermented foodways as a Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellow during which he traveled and studied in France, UK, Ireland, Belgium, Ghana, India, and Thailand; learned to cook Thai food; and presented a paper at Oxford University on sausages that people rot in their attics. He holds a BA from Hamilton College, and will begin his MS in Agriculture, Food, and the Environment at Tufts University’s Friedman School in the fall, after which he hopes to work internationally on agriculture and nutrition policy. When Veronica Barron first joined the Food For Free team last year to help with the Party Under The Harvest Moon, it was supposed to be temporary, but she liked it so much around here that we couldn’t shake her. Miriam Stason takes on the role of Field of Greens Farm Manager In her new role as Events and Administrative Coordinator, Veronica wields her writing and design skills, her penchant for data wrangling, and her love of brainstorming in service of Food For Free’s administration, events, and outreach activities. Veronica’s professional background is split between marketing and theater, and she finds that both serve her equally well for her outreach and events work. Veronica earned her BFA at Boston University, but crossed the river after graduation to become a proud Cantabrigian. From there it was a slippery slope to becoming a CSA subscriber, farmers’ market shopper, and aspiring gardener. for 2013, having joined us as Assistant Farm Manager in 2012. Miriam has over ten years of experience growing food on many different patches of earth, starting while in high school at The Mountain School in Vermont, and followed by farms in Spain and Costa Rica. She then spent eight years in various roles, including Director of Agriculture, at The Food Project in Lincoln, MA, and served in 2012 as Gleaning Coordinator for our close partners, the Boston Area Gleaners. Miriam currently also works with Dancing Tomato Farm growing salad greens and heirloom tomatoes varieties for restaurant and home use. My name is Sasha Purpura and I’m the new Executive Director of Food For Free. I joined in July of 2012 following the retirement of David Leslie, a man who deserves tremendous gratitude for the contributions he made to this organization over his 8-year tenure here. As I approach the end of my first year, I am still learning and still continually amazed at the level of support and participation we receive from the community around us. Food For Free only exists because you want it to. And you show us that in so many ways—not only through the generous financial contributions we receive and the events held, in our honor, by neighboring local businesses and friends, but also from the hundreds of hours people contribute each year to volunteering on our farm, our trucks, in our office, and at the Party Under the Harvest Moon. Food For Free is truly a shared community effort and it is only through the hard work and support of this community that we were able to move over one and three quarters of a million pounds of food in the year 2012. Almost six hundred thousand pounds of that was food that, without the commitment of our many food donors, would have gone to compost or landfill. 100,000 pounds of that food came from farmers throughout Massachusetts who, like us, are dedicated to getting fresh, healthy food to those in need. So before I continue, I want to share my heartfelt thanks to all of you for all that you have helped us accomplish. I am honored to be a part of this 32-year old organization that is a testament to what can be accomplished with the support of a community. I follow in the very large footsteps of David Leslie, and the many directors that preceded him. They have all left their individual footprints and have helped make Food For Free what it is today. In 2012, I joined an organization that is well respected in the community, financially stable, operationally efficient, and successfully delivering on its mission. In fact, we find ourselves well positioned to begin to look at what’s next. Food For Free has recently kicked-off a strategic planning process. As a part of that, we are speaking with stakeholders throughout our community—funders, individual contributors, business partners, staff, food donors, board members, farmers, emergency food programs and more. We are assessing what we do well, where we might improve and how we might have a larger impact on addressing food waste while getting fresh healthy food to those in need. We will be thoughtful in our assessment and planning and will continue to support all of our current food recipient agencies and home delivery clients. Our hope is that in the coming year we’ll be able to share some new plans, and new ideas as to how, with your support, we can further our reach and, together, continue to bridge the gap between waste and want. Veronica Barron Office and Events Coordinator Food For Free Annual Report 2012 1 Regarding our finances… As you’ll see from our finances, we had a record breaking year, recognizing over $115,000 more in income than expense (not counting depreciation). I have to admit that this is not an unpleasant way to begin my tenure at Food For Free. However, this boon is thanks to our incredible supporters. In March of last year, we received an exceptionally generous contribution of $50,000 from Robert Friede, the father of one of our dedicated, long-term volunteers. In November, the estate of the late Marie Kirchberger left us a bequest of $75,000 as a result of the sale of her art collection. We owe a debt of gratitude to both Robert and Marie, as their contributions will have significant impact on the amount of fresh food we can rescue and distribute. These incredible gifts speak to the importance of our work, and the commitment of the community that helps make it happen. It is, in part, because of our significant surplus, that we are able to step back at this point and consider how we might further our efforts through a thoughtful strategic planning process. For all that we are grateful for such a positive year, we do not want this to leave the impression that we don’t still need your support. Although Food For Free moves close to two million pounds of food a year to over 80 emergency food programs serving more than 25,000 individuals, this represents only a small fraction of the need that exists in our communities. With your continued support, we make a commitment to continue our work and at the same time, create new and effective ways to further our impact. 2012 Income Contracts & grants Donations Fundraising Investment & other income Realized and unrealized gains & losses In-kind donations Total Income Food For Free Annual Report 2012 1,177.13 600.00 538,906 .04 2012 Expenses Salaries 237,412.95 Fringe 70,986.60 Transportation 20,793.55 Food purchases 17,392.14 Bank & credit processing fees 3,834.55 Payroll fees 1,768.30 Miscellaneous 16,174.74 Outside services 17,247.50 Printing and postage 13,737.19 Rent 1,800.00 Depreciation 29,619.00 Office 3,386.29 Telephone & Communications 1,984.73 Insurance 16,314.69 Dues 245.00 Repairs 1,630.88 Total Expenses 2 158,081.31 232,320.70 146,186.99 539.91 454,328.11 2012 Recipient Agencies Regular Delivery Sites Pantries Boston Medical Center: Elders Living at Home Program Boston Medical Center: Preventive Food Pantry Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee Food Pantry Cambridge Senior Center Food Pantry Cambridgeport Baptist Church Food Pantry East End House Food Pantry Elizabeth Peabody House Food Pantry Grant Manor Apartments Food Pantry Haven from Hunger Food Pantry & Meal Program LBJ Apartments Food Pantry Margaret Fuller House Food Pantry Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church: Epic Food Pantry Pentecostal Tabernacle Food Pantry Project Soup: Home Delivery Program Rosie’s Place Groceries St James’ Episcopal Church: Helping Hand Food Pantry St Luke’s-San Lucas Food Pantry St. Paul’s African Methodist Episcopal Church Food Pantry Transition House Food Pantry Western Avenue Baptist Church Food Pantry Zinberg Clinic Pantry I (Cambridge Hospital) Zinberg Clinic Pantry II (Somerville Hospital) Meal Programs Campus Kitchens Project at UMASS Boston First Parish Church Tuesday Meals Food Not Bombs Harvard Square Meals Hearty Meals for All Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church: Meal Program MIT Feed the Hungry Project Pilgrim Church: Loaves and Fishes St. Peter’s Episcopal Church: Common Cares Union Baptist: Project Uplift Shelters, SROs, & Special Needs Residences CASPAR: Albany Street Shelter CASPAR: Highland Residence CASPAR: New Day CASPAR: Summit Residence CASPAR: Womanplace Catholic Charities: St. Patrick’s Shelter Commonwealth Land Trust: 523 Massachusetts Avenue Commonwealth Land Trust: Bowdoin Manor Community Resources for Justice: Somerville Transition Shelter First Church Shelter Heading Home: Cambridge Shelter Hildebrand Family Self-Help Center Pine Street Inn Ruah, Breath of Life YMCA Central Square Wellmet Project, Inc.: Leonard Avenue Residence Wellmet Project, Inc.: William Street Residence Youth Programs Area 4 Youth Center Cambridge Cares about AIDS: Youth On Fire Cambridge Community Center: Camp Cowemoki and Afterschool Program Cambridge Economic Opportunity Committee Daycare Centro Presente: Pintamos Nuestro Mundo Youth Program Community Art Center Elizabeth Peabody House: Healthy After School Club Fletcher Maynard Afterschool Program Frisoli Youth Center Gately Youth Center King Afterschool Program King Preschool King Open School Extended Day Program Morse Afterschool Program Morse Preschool Peabody Afterschool Program Peabody Preschool Prospect Hill Academy Charter School West Cambridge Youth Center Willis D. ARTBEAT somervilleartscouncil.org/artbeat/2013 August 30 foodforfree.org/events September 23 MUSIC FOR FOOD CONCERT A benefit for Food For Free at New England Conservatory musicforfoodboston.org October 25 PARTY UNDER THE HARVEST MOON AT MIT’S MORSS HALL foodforfree.org/events November 23 New Staff in 2012 Sasha Purpura rejoices in the diversity of her role as Executive Director as an opportunity to flex all of her muscles (literally and figuratively) while leading the organization.
