2015 Annual Report - Cristo Rey Sacramento
Thank You! 2015/16 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Message from the Board of Directors Just two short months ago Pope Francis addressed the youth of Paraguay and stressed the importance of uniting hope with hard work in all of our efforts. As we begin our tenth year at Cristo Rey we can certainly say that we have united our hope with hard work, and we can proudly say that the results have been remarkable. It began with the hope of Cristo Rey students who had previously never thought a college education would ever be a possibility. It continued with the hope of Mercy Foundation that a partnership with the Cristo Rey community could result in a new school. It included the hopes of the Cristo Rey Board of Directors and the donors to our school that this dream of a new school could become reality. Member Board Sr. Michelle Gorman, RSM Sisters of Mercy Representative Rev. Edwin B. Harris, S.J. Board Chair; Jesuits Representative Thomas A. Johnson, Board Chair Attorney at Law Sr. Gabrielle Marie Jones, RSM Vice-President, Mission Integration Mercy San Juan Medical Center Kathleen Jonsson Former Education Specialist The hope was not enough, though. Over the past year the hard work, of those who hoped for more, produced a state of the art new school on Jackson Road. We are so grateful to all of our donors, and to Mercy Foundation for making this possible. The Campaign to Build Cristo Rey was a resounding success. The goal of $10.5 million was reached and then somehow surpassed within 18 months! What was once difficult to imagine became a reality and there are reasons we can look back on to see how it came together: We have a president in Sr. Eileen Enright, R.S.M., who leads with her unfailing, powerful faith, who never stops working for the students’ futures. We had the commitment of the Society of Jesus and the Sisters of Mercy that has been a decade-long partnership and has never wavered, even in our most difficult days. The hard work of the Capital Campaign Cabinet members along with the Board of Directors must also be noted. Then combine the partnership with Mercy Foundation, with the wonderful philanthropy of our community and it all came together, beautifully. Of course, the biggest contributors to our recent triumph were the students, who through their dedication and hard work, easily persuaded our supporters that their success was worth investing in. We continue to grow and add to our Board. This year we are very fortunate to have three new members: Jan Scully, our distinguished former District Attorney; Paul McClure, the Principal of Runyon Saltzman Einhorn; and Chris Wagner a retired professor at Cosumnes River College. We will continue to grow, and to hope that hard work in all of our efforts will change the futures of our students. ~ Tom Johnson, Board Chair Paul McClure Principal, Runyon Saltzman Einhorn, Inc. Thanks to the Cristo Rey staff, I was offered an opportunity to go to the Georgetown Summer College Immersion Program. I know without the partnership between these two schools, going across the country to explore the world would be impossible. During the course of the program, I met a lot of wonderful people that inspired me to achieve my dreams. The comfortable environment helped me realize what I want in a college. I was truly blessed to have met such wonderful people with so many aspirations for the future. I will treasure this experience for the rest of my life. Karla, Class of 2016 Stanford Medical Youth Science Program This summer, I was able to attend and graduate from the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program. The five weeks I spent at Stanford were invigorating. Being able to wake up, go to lectures and learn new things every day was such a great privilege. I was fortunate to take an Anatomy Lab too! In this class, we had the privilege to work with cadavers and actually do hands on learning. Being able to do this makes me look forward to Medical School. Aside from all the lectures, I also got the chance to intern at Stanford Hospital. There, I worked with the Physical Therapy Group, which was located in the Orthopedics Department. This helped me confirm that I do want to become a Physical Therapist. Having this experience brought me to see things differently, and gave me a lot of new memories to look back on. This program not only helped me with my school work, but also taught me how to understand others emotionally. It was an amazing experience. Karla, on right Matisse, Class of 2016 Notre Dame University Matisse, on far left Cristo Rey High School has changed my life and has given me great experiences. Before I came to Cristo Rey I never imagined myself being able to travel across the country to pursue my dream of being an attorney. I was able to spend two weeks of my summer at the University of Notre Dame to take a PreLaw course! It was the greatest two weeks of my life so far! During this program I studied the basics of our justice system here in America and the many different ones from around the globe. I also was able to travel to Chicago and hear oral debates in the seventh district court of appeals, which is something I never thought I’d be able to do. On top of that, I had authentic deep dish pizza which made the trip ten times better! The pre-college program was a great educational experience, but it also gave me the determination to achieve greatness. This trip gave me the strength to work my hardest even when times get tough because it will all pay off once I start my journey in the real world. This wouldn’t be possible without the help of Cristo Rey’s donors and sponsors. You all helped to fund the school, which helped them send me and my classmate to this amazing program. You’ve all changed my life for the better and guaranteed a great future for me. I can’t thank you enough for your support. WORK STUDY PROGRAM Each and every day, the wonderful students of Cristo Rey High School play an integral role in helping Dignity Health’s Mercy General Hospital deliver high-quality, compassionate healthcare to our community. Martha is one of those wonderful students who helps our hospital in a variety of ways. Martha works at our Information Desk, Cardiac Rehabilitation Department and in our Acute Rehabilitation Department. She is very interested in becoming a physical therapist in sports medicine, so the experience she is getting now is invaluable. Martha is also helping on a patient chart project with our Advance Cardiac Disease Clinic. In all these roles, she is interacting with patients, visitors, stocking supplies, doing clerical work, setting up and breaking down patient charts, and so much more. We thank Cristo Rey High School, their students and the work/study program, because it’s part of what makes Mercy General Hospital successful. ~ William Hodges, Mercy General Hospital Katie Gill, PT, DPT, NCS, Sr. Clare Marie Dalton, RSM and Martha The New Cristo Rey Sacramento at a Glance Message from the President Cristo Rey Sacramento is celebrating its tenth year of providing college-prep education and professional work experience to high school students with limited financial resources. Rooted in the traditions of the Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) we challenge our students to become men and women of faith, purpose and service. We have been so blessed and we have so much to be thankful for as we celebrate our first decade together. We have a brand new, multi-functional campus, designed to meet the needs of our rapidly growing student body. Our students are thrilled to have a new school! We are profoundly grateful to all who supported The Campaign to Build Cristo Rey and to Mercy Foundation who facilitated the campaign to provide a new space for our students. When I ask the students what they think of their new school, one student said, “Sr. Eileen, I feel smarter.” This is not just a school, but also a community of young men and women who look forward to a future full of hope, with confidence. There is great reason to celebrate this monumental year; 334 students have graduated from Cristo Rey Sacramento, many the first in their families to graduate high school and go to college. I am humbled by the incredible generosity and support of so many in our community and I thank you most sincerely for embracing the Cristo Rey mission. ~ Sr. Eileen Enright, RSM “The Campaign to Build Cristo Rey” What a Success! We at Cristo Rey High School would like to extend a special THANK YOU to those who made contributions through Mercy Foundation to support The Campaign to Build Cristo Rey! Without your support and generosity our new campus would not be possible. Ken and Joyce Adamson AG Kassis Fund Andreas Agos and Nancy King Mansour and Sonbol Aliabadi Walter C. & Agnes V. Alumni Update I am a Mexican American, the first of my family to be born in this country, and the first to matriculate to college. Every generation before me picked fruit in the fields, and suffered in the heat of the sun, and struggled to survive. My name is Eliud Marquez and I am the Cristo Rey Sacramento Salutatorian of Class 2011. I am the first alumni to graduate from Sacramento State University. I’ve studied in Hong Kong, and been accepted to graduate school. I will be completing my Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Sacramento State and am on track to graduate in Spring 2017. As I enter my Master’s Program I hope to continue to build my leadership skills so that I can make a significant difference in the Sacramento community. I am using some of those skills in my current internship with the Sacramento County Welfare Department Investigations Division. Here, I assist with unannounced home visits to clients who are potentially abusing the system. My hopes are to continue to work hard towards my academic success, discover new meanings of humanity through action, and strive to make a positive difference in my community and to always remain civically engaged. My involvement with Cristo Rey Sacramento has not ended with graduation. As an Alumni, I am continuously working with Sr. Eileen to make sure that alumni give back to Cristo Rey and our community around us. I thank you for all you have done for Cristo Rey. Without your help and support, I would not be where I am today. I hope to give back to my high school in the future and make an impact on someone’s life as you did for me. Thank you.
