2009-2010 Annual Report
a n n u a l r e p o rt 2009-2010 Saint Raphael Academy A Catholic Lasallian School of Excellence change and continuity Dear Friends, In August of 2010, Bishop Thomas Tobin appointed me as the new President/ Principal of Saint Raphael Academy. My tenure represents perfectly Change and Continuity—the theme of this Annual Report. As the first woman chief administrator in the nearly 90 year history of Saint Raphael Academy, my appointment certainly represents change. At the same time, it ensures continuity because I bring with me a longstanding commitment to the core principles of a Catholic, values-based education in the tradition of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. I have been “together and in association” with the Lasallian mission for more than fifteen years, having spent time studying at the Generalate in Rome, in addition to being a graduate of the Lasallian Leadership Institute and the Buttimer Institute for Lasallian Studies. I believe deeply in the mission of our founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle: “to bring a Christian and human education to the young entrusted to our care, especially the poor.” “Mere change is not growth. Growth is the synthesis of change and continuity, and where there is no continuity, there is no growth.” - C.S. Lewis In Saint La Salle’s time poverty was understood in terms of the inability to pay private school masters for an education. Today, the types of “poverty” young people can experience is varied from poverty of spirit to poverty of relationships to poverty of self-awareness. The Lasallian mission of education for the “salvation of souls” offers hope to our world today. In the words of Superior General, Brother Alvaro Rodriquez Echeverria, FSC, “Christian education has an extremely important role to play in our current reality…a type of education that is human and personal and which plays a critical role that makes possible the creation of a new society.” This is an exciting and challenging time to be leading a Catholic high school. The values of academic excellence, spiritual development, moral enrichment and social justice have been the hallmarks of the Catholic-Lasallian education offered here at Saint Raphael Academy. The struggle to maintain a moral perspective in our rapidly changing society is evident everywhere we turn. Change is all around us—in the workplace, in the marketplace, in technology, in our political structures, in our churches, in our own lives. Continuity—a sense of our connection to what previous generations have created—is what will enable us to convert that change into progress. In the words of C.S. Lewis, “Mere change is not growth. Growth is the synthesis of change and continuity, and where there is no continuity, there is no growth.” In the pages of this Annual Report, you will see evidence of how Saint Raphael Academy is dealing with our changing world, while at the same time honoring our tradition of walking in the footsteps of the Founder. We are optimistic about our future. For all of us—students, faculty and alumni—it’s an exciting time to be part of the “community of SAINTS.” Live Jesus in our hearts. . .forever, Mrs. Maryann Donohue-Lynch President/Principal Fr. Albert Kenney, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Providence conferred a blessing upon Maryann Donohue-Lynch when she was installed as the chief administrator for Saint Raphael Academy, September 23, 2010 1 The 2009-2010 school year began with our annual back-to-school liturgy, with the Most Reverend Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of Providence, celebrating. Highlights of Professor Stephen Knott of the US Naval War College spoke to the Moore Scholars about the life and presidency of Abraham Lincoln. 2009-2010 Jack Brennan, former chief of staff to President Richard Nixon, and inspiration for the Frost/Nixon movie, spoke to students about his experiences in government service. The SRA family of students, faculty and staff joined forces to collect food for more than 40 Thanksgiving baskets, which students then distributed to local families in need. The Pawtucket Board of Canvassers set up a voter registration station at SRA to register members of the senior class. Six students represented Saint Raphael Academy at the Model Legislature, held annually at the Rhode Island State House. Lilliane Birch of the Holocaust Education and Resource Center of Rhode Island spoke to social studies classes. Ms. Birch’s parents were survivors of the Austerwicz prison camp and the Soviet detention camp system. Christopher Farrell, a Rhode Island resident who served as a campaign aide to President Obama, was another featured speaker in our social studies classes. He spoke about the challenges of running a campaign for the highest office in the land. The SRA library upgraded its software system and joined RILINK, enabling us to participate in interlibrary loan and providing access to a host of major research databases. 2 Richard Casiello ’10 was named to the Golden Dozen—the top 12 academic football players in the state of Rhode Island—by the Rhode Island Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Rich and teammate Jean-Daniel Roussel ’10 both received football scholarships for college. Sr. Regina Brennan, a 32-year employee of SRA, celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Sister of Mercy. Sr. Regina currently works in the Guidance Department and is instrumental in bringing various alumni back to campus for semi-annual Career Explorer Days with the Junior class. Students Andres Taborda ’11, Adam Derouin ’11, Joshua Nason ’10, and moderators Elizabeth Rouleau and Laura Loffredo joined members of Lasallian schools from across the United States and Canada at the United Nations in April to observe the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the “International Rights of the Child” Convention. The Alumni Advisory Board was reconstituted at the start of 2010, and immediately began planning a series of programs and events designed to keep our 7,000 alumni connected to the SRA family. Our planned student trip to Spain and France was diverted to Costa Rica, courtesy of the volcanic eruption in Iceland that showered ash and stalled air travel all over Europe. Moderator Leslie Durigan and several students adapted quickly to their new itinerary and reported a wonderful experience. The “Senior Alumni Luncheon”, held in April, is an annual gathering of alumni who graduated more than fifty years ago. As part of Foreign Language week in the spring, Masses were celebrated in Spanish and in French. The Class of 2013 created Christmas cards for the children in Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. Record attendance boosted spirits for the Annual Fine Arts Gala in May, while the December performance of Beauty and the Beast was a favorite of alumni from several generations. The Anatomy classes, under the direction of Mr. Michael Santilli, hosted blood drives in the fall and in the spring. In 2010, our spring Blood Drive broke all Rhode Island records, with more than 50% of all possible donors participating in the drive (the average is 25%). Seventy-one pints of blood were donated, potentially saving as many as 200 lives! The Fall Career Explorer day featured several alumni who spoke to the Junior Class about different career paths. Among the participants were: Joe Beaudette ’82, Aimee Aunchman Tortolano ’94, John Duffy ’90, Chris Iannetta ’01 (pictured above), Carey Mullen Richard ’94, and Lesley Proctor Barnes ’89. 3 Continuing a Tradition of Academic Excellence The words “college preparatory education” call to mind a curriculum that features a classical approach to learning, one in which the requirements remain fairly constant over time. In fact, while several courses at the Academy would be familiar to graduates of any era, much has changed over time. Some changes are incidental: Slide rules have given way to calculators, and chalkboards have been replaced by Smartboards. Other changes, however, are more substantial. Foreign languages remain a requirement, but Latin is no longer offered, and many more students study Spanish than ever before. History, social studies and Western Civilization are a staple of the curriculum, but today’s student learns something about Eastern cultures as well. Whole branches of science were undiscovered a generation ago—biology classes alone have been redefined by what we now understand about the human genome. And while earlier generations studied literary classics such as The Red Badge of Courage or The Grapes of Wrath, today’s student also reads “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Things They Carried.” Information is multiplying at an astonishing rate, and the amount of data each student is expected to process is almost staggering. The digital generation acquires and stores information in ways that would seem like science fiction to students of even a few years ago. Knowledge, on the other hand, is much more than the accumulation of information. Knowledge requires synthesis and interpretation. These critical thinking skills are what define and preserve our traditional college-prep curriculum, even in the midst of the technology revolution. Academic achievement is not confined to class time. At Saint Raphael Academy, several co-curricular activities enhance classroom instruction and encourage our students to apply their knowledge to varied pursuits. Here is a partial list: Chess Club Drama Club Forensics Club Literary Society Math League Mock Trial Model Legislature Science Club 4 Technology Club Moody’s Math Challenge The annual Moody’s Math Challenge requires students to solve a real-life problem by applying advanced mathematical reasoning. In 2010, students assembled for a 14-hour session (on a Saturday!) to tackle the challenge of how to apportion voting districts for fair representation, using the latest census data. Math teacher Tom Soucar ’90 said, “Having the opportunity to work collaboratively in groups helps prepare students for the workforce and is an experience they will never forget.” Chess Club The game of chess has been described as “a gymnasium for the mind.” At SRA, the Chess Club is moderated by Admissions Director Shawn McKay, who helps students develop the strategic-thinking skills required for success. The Annual Chess Tournament, in which both faculty and students play for the Championship Title, is held in March. Student Jason Link ’14 with Shawn McKay Model Legislature SRA students participate in the Model Legislature program, which offers high schools throughout Rhode Island a hands-on approach to the study of state government. Classroom lessons in history and civics are brought to life vividly in the State House chambers, as participants take on the roles of senators, representatives and lobbyists. Together, the students from the various schools create, debate and enact model legislation. 1960 Charles O’Connor, Harvard University Charles O’Connor was the Class President and Valedictorian for the Class of 1960. As a student, Chuck was involved in a variety of activities, from football to drama, debating, and yearbook. Upon graduating Saint Raphael Academy, Chuck enrolled at Harvard University, from which he received an AB cum laude in English in 1964. He then went on to earn a JD from Georgetown in 1967, and after a brief stint in NavyJAG, including Vietnam service, he embarked on a long career in environmental law with the Washington DC firm of McKenna Long & Aldridge, LLP. Chuck is a superb example of the value of lifelong learning. He earned a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University in 1985, and having recently resigned his partnership with McKenna Long & Aldridge, he enrolled in a doctoral program in liberal studies at Georgetown, where he will study the impact of the First World War on Western Culture. H o n o r i n g Acc o m p l i s hm e n t Across the Years… 2010 Joe Mello, Brown University Joe Mello is Chuck O’Connor’s 21st century counterpart. A graduate of the Class of 2010, Joe was also Valedictorian and served three terms as Class President. Additionally, Joe served as President of the National Honor Society, captained the hockey team and performed in the Fine Arts Gala during his senior year. Joe earned the coveted Edith Peck Phillips award as the outstanding student of 2010. Like Chuck, Joe’s academic accomplishments earned him admission to the Ivy League. Now a freshman at Brown University, Joe’s concentration is in “Commerce, Organizations and Entreneurship” and he looks forward to a career in business. 5 Together and By Association: Advancing our Lasallian Mission When St. John Baptist de la Salle first established a teaching order of Brothers in the midseventeenth century, their mission was to promote “the human & Christian education to the young, especially the poor.” The struggle to fulfill this mission was all-consuming, especially in the earliest days, and the men who answered the call to this vocation understood their vows to mean a complete commitment to the mission, to the order and to one another. In this way, the mission of the Brothers was understood to belong solely to themselves in association with one another. Those who wished to join St. La Salle in his work did so by entering the order. “The association for mission, which gives birth to the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, finds its transcendent origins in the reconciling work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Today, this dynamic of association reaches beyond the body of the Institute, drawing into the mission men and women of goodwill who This framework for carrying out the Lasallian mission began to change during the 1960’s when the Second Vatican Conference ushered in a new vision of the role of the laity in the Catholic Church. The dialogue between those Brothers who had dedicated their lives to the Lasallian mission and the broader community of lay men and women who support their work began to grow and expand. Several Academy staff members have participated in Lasallian training programs. L-R: Caroline Aldrich, Mike Santilli, Maryann Donohue-Lynch, Philip Solomon, Nancy Benoit, Terry Murray, Sandy Smith, Linda Michalczyk, Rita Pratt and Betty Monahan. This expansion began slowly in the latter half of the twentieth century and has exploded as lay Lasallians all over the world have entered into the ecclesial mission begun by St. La Salle and his early Brothers. During the last 30 years, through various lay training and development programs, the Christian Brothers have explored new ways to live out the Lasallian charism. With more than 300 years of vibrant experience in fulfilling the original vision of St. La Salle, both the Brothers and their lay Partners have reflected the rich heritage of their association. At Saint Raphael Academy, we embrace our Lasallian tradition and journey with zeal into the future! see the continuing relevance of the work that De La Salle and the first Brothers initiated and are committed to keeping alive. Thus, the Institute’s mission is properly understood as one in which Brothers and their Lasallian partners share.” From The March 2010 Rule Consultation Document 6 Saint Raphael Academy has enjoyed a covenant relationship with the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools since 1924, when Bishop William Hickey invited the Brothers to run the new high school in Pawtucket. In 2010, several brothers came to campus to celebrate the installation of Maryann Donohue-Lynch as the first president/principal of the Academy. L-R: Br. Frederick Mueller, FSC, Maryann Donohue-Lynch, Br. James Martino, FSC, Br. Edmond Precourt, FSC, Br. Lawrence Goyette, FSC, and Br. Michael Reis, FSC. Reaching Out Talk about a long commute— students from opposite sides of the world have chosen to attend Saint Raphael Academy because of the wellrounded education they will receive here. Hyun-Gi Lee (from Korea) and Leila Jaradi (from Germany) are living with local families while they take advantage of the opportunities afforded by a school like Saint Raphael Academy. In Germany, Leila is a day student at a prestigious boarding school, but she wanted to study for a year in America, primarily to improve her command of the English language. She worked with an exchange program and chose Saint Raphael Academy because of all the activities it offers. Now that she has been here for a few months, Leila says “I love it. . .it’s very impressive.” Leila is involved in the instrumental ensemble, the vocal ensemble and drumline, so “my week is very busy.” Hyun-Gi Lee is following the footsteps of his brother Segi ‘08 in choosing to attend SRA. Hyun-Gi was born in Korea and moved to China at the age of 9 years old. Six years later, he chose to come to Rhode Island and enroll at SRA, where he says the teachers are “much nicer” than those he encountered at home. Hyun-Gi participates in football, chess club and tennis. Like Leila, Hyun-Gi enjoys the challenge of pursuing his high-school education in another country, and says Rhode Island is a beautiful place, except that “it’s too cold!” ch a n g e a n d c o n t i n u i t y At St. Raphael Academy Reaching Back In a city like Pawtucket, family traditions run deep. One of those traditions is attending Saint Raphael Academy, and the Costigans of Pawtucket are a perfect example. Milton and Donald Costigan attended the Academy in the 1940’s and would have graduated in 1944 and 1945 respectively, had they not enlisted in the armed forces to serve in World War II. Milton’s sons Neal, Paul and Raymond attended in the 1960’s and 1970’s. They, in turn sent, several members of the next generation to the “little school on Walcott Street.” Moira Costigan Carraher ’97, Neal’s daughter, is currently a member of the faculty at SRA. Today, the Costigan family tradition has reached four generations, with the enrollment of Ashley Giordano ’11. For the record, Mrs. Mary Costigan, Milton’s widow, accepted an honorary diploma on his behalf at the graduation of her grandson, Dennis, in 2006. The Costigan Family Tradition at Saint Raphael Academy Milton Costigan ‘44 Donald Costigan ‘45 Neal Costigan ‘68 Paul Costigan ‘75 Raymond Costigan ‘77 Erin Costigan Schwab ‘93 Moira Costigan Carraher ‘97 Cathleen Costigan Andrzejczyk ‘97 Michael Costigan ‘99 Kevin Costigan ‘00 Sean Costigan ‘00 Rory Costigan ‘03 Dennis Costigan ‘06 Ashley Giordano ‘11 L-R: Rory ’03, Sean ’00, Cathleen ’97, Dennis ’06, Paul ’75, Mary (Mrs. Milton J. ’44), Michael ‘9, Moira ’97, Kevin ’00, Neal ’68. (Missing: Erin ’93 and Raymond ’77). Moira Costigan Carraher ’97 teaches English at the Academy and also serves as choreographer and assistant director for the Drama Club. Moira sang in the choir as a student and continues to share her vocal talents at various SRA functions. 7 Inspired Generosity: From Beneficiary to Benefactor More than fifty years have passed since Charlie King first met Coach Bob Condon, but the SAINTS spirit that they embody Several years ago, Charlie King ’56 established the King/Condon Scholarship to honor his former physics teacher and football coach, Bob Condon. Each year, Charlie travels from his home in New York, stops to pick up Coach Condon (now 90 years old), and together they visit Saint Raphael Academy to confer the award upon a student who is both a scholar and a football player. The King/Condon Scholarship serves as a poignant reminder of the impact a dedicated educator and coach can have on the life of a student, and for the past three years, Rich Casiello ’10 has been the lucky recipient of the award. continues to flourish. Having demonstrated excellence both in the classroom and on the playing field, Rich was an obvious choice for the scholarship. He played football all four years at SRA and, as a senior, was named to the Golden Dozen by the Rhode Island Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Rich is also a nationally ranked shotputter, while his SAT scores landed him in the top 10% of all Rhode Island seniors last year. The Golden Dozen award, which Rich earned as one of the top 12 academic football players in Rhode Island, carries with it a small financial grant. When Rich learned of his selection, he knew immediately that he wanted to use the award to “pay it forward.” Rich decided to honor his own football coach, Mike Sassi ’86, as well as the example set forth by Charlie King and Bob Condon. Rich and his family have created the Casiello/Sassi Scholarship, modeled entirely after the King/Condon Scholarship that has made it possible for Rich to attend the Academy for the last several years. The first recipient of the Casiello/Sassi Scholarship is Davon Robertson ’12, while Chris Ventura ’13 is this year’s recipient of the King/Condon Scholarship. 8 Richard Casiello ’10 L-R, Dr. Charlie King ‘56, Chris Ventura ‘13, Coach Bob Condon, Coach Mike Sassi ‘86, Davon Robertson ‘12, Rich Casiello ‘10 Scholarship Fund Donors More than two-thirds of the Saint Raphael Academy student body relies on financial aid provided by the Academy, the Diocese of Providence, and these generous contributors.
