Our Mission
ANGELO STATE UNIVERSITY
SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER
The mission of the
Angelo State University Small Business
Development Center (SBDC) is to
promote growth, expansion, innovation,
increased productivity, and improved
management for small businesses in the
ten counties that comprise the SBDC
service area.
Those counties
are: Irion,
Tom Green,
Concho,
McCulloch,
Crockett,
Schleicher,
Menard,
Mason, Sutton
and Kimble.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT =
INCREASED JOBS, SALES, FINANCING
AND TAX REVENUES.
Every $1 put into the SBDC program yields
$6.65 in tax revenues.
SALES GROWTH:
SBDC clients have a 18.3% higher sales growth
compared to a 7.7% growth for the average
Texas business.
EMPLOYMENT GROWTH:
SBDC clients have a 18.1% employment growth
compared to 2.1% growth for the average Texas
business.
COST PER JOB CREATED:
SBDC program costs about $1,103 per job
created.

ASU Small Business Development Center
History
Since opening its doors in 1990, the SBDC has provided
one-on-one business advising assistance to thousands of
Concho Valley business clients. Approximately 500 businesses
are served per year. In addition, approximately 1,000 seminar
participants enroll in the numerous business workshops and
seminars conducted by the center annually.
The ASU SBDC is now housed under
one roof with other economic
development partners at the newly
renovated Business Resource
Center at 69 North Chadbourne
Street in downtown San Angelo.
Staff Expertise
The SBDC staff brings to the table a multitude of expertise
gained from their business ownership, management, and
education. Business Advisors have formal business
education complimenting their previous business
experience.
Some of their areas of expertise include:
• Business Startup or Expansion
• Business Planning and Loan Proposals
• Business Financing
• Marketing
• Selling to the Government
• Financial Analysis
• Human Resources
In addition, the staff goes through a series of business
certifications that enhance their advising skills.
Partners
Angelo State University serves as the center’s host
institution. In addition, the SBDC is a member of the
University of Texas at San Antonio South-West Texas Border
SBDC Network. Funding for the center comes mainly from
the State of Texas and the U.S. Small Business Administration
(SBA) through a partnership program.
Other partners the SBDC works with include area economic
development corporations and chambers of commerce,
Workforce Board and Workforce Solutions, and the CVCED
Business Factory.
Business Advising Services
The SBDC provides access to confidential, no cost advising
by Certified Business Advisors to entrepreneurs. From
helping aspiring entrepreneurs turn ideas into businesses to
helping small firms expand, the ASU SBDC is the resource
that entrepreneurs in all industry sectors can turn to for
assistance.

International Trade Office
The ASU International Trade Office provides import and
export assistance to small businesses throughout the Concho
Valley. This service has been provided since 1995 when
the office opened under the umbrella of the SBDC through
generous support provided by the San Angelo Chamber of
Commerce and West Texas Utilities.
Specialty Centers
The ASU SBDC is part of a regional network of SBDC’s
comprising the South-West Texas Border Network. The
Network office is headquartered at the University of TexasSan Antonio. Housed there are various specialty centers
which the ASU SBDC can tap into to provide more intensive
assistance for clients. Included in these specialty centers
are: The National SBDC Information Clearinghouse which
provides free business research to SBDC clients; The SBDC
International Trade Center with its staff of trade specialists;
and the SBDC Procurement Technical Assistance Center
(PTAC) which provides assistance with government sales
and technology research and development funding. All of
these specialty centers
are available to ASU
SBDC clients at no
additional cost.
Seminars & Workshops
The SBDC offers a diverse array of business seminars
and workshops at no or low cost such as business start-up,
business planning, managing employees, financing, basic
bookkeeping and legal issues. New seminars are always
developing to meet the needs of the business community.
Several seminars are conducted each month in San Angelo
and various locations throughout the service area.
On-line business training
On-line business training is also available. You can take
business courses in the comfort of your own home with no
fees to worry about!
There are 29 business topics that fall into the
following four categories:
• Foundations of Marketing
• Managing Your Finances
• Government Contracting
• Starting Your Business
Each of these categories contains more specific areas
tailored to meet your needs. We must emphasize
however, that this does not take the place of one-on-one

Small Business Management
Certificate Program
To help provide new and potential small business
owners with a more in depth entrepreneurship education,
the ASU SBDC provides a Small Business Management
Certificate Program. Participants can choose between two
tracks: Self-Paced (one year to complete) and an 8-Week
Course. The certificate program covers topics such as
writing a business plan, sales tax, understanding financial
statements, finding funding, marketing, and more. More
