In a relatively short period of time we successfully brought together two chamber organizations in a remarkably painless effort. This was due to the tireless efforts of Karen Tercek and Donna Swan, as well as the successful collaboration of over 20 board members and volunteers. The Federal Government could learn something from us. With this said, the question remains what value have we realized? First membership has increased to over 500 and continues to grow at an aggressive pace. Also, programs are providing more value to our members and are better organized. Finally, our outreach efforts have increased and we are now communicating with new community groups and organizations that, until recently, have been neglected. There is a renewed excitement among the Chamber leadership, the board and the members as we move forward. Looking ahead, the Board recently completed a strategic planning retreat to identify goals, objectives and strategies for next year. This session was facilitated by Dione DiMetro of Lakeland Community College who also helped facilitate some of our merger meetings. Our goals include an effort to “increase and expand our presence in the community; increasing fundraising and membership and attract; and engage and retain members by offering programming addressing business needs”. While ambitious, given the Chamber leadership and the Board members remaining for next year, they are well within reach. Finally, as we near the year-end, we would like to thank the entire Chamber community for your support. As Co-Chairs of the Willoughby/Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce it has been our honor and pleasure to serve at this unique and exciting time. Co-Chair Congratulations to Bob Fiala and Stacey Rodgers on receiving the “Bright Star” award through the Northern Ohio Chambers of Commerce. Bob and Stacey received this award for their leaderdship and their work on the merging of two chambers of commerce. Co-Chair Notes from Karen By Karen Tercek President/CEO Dear Members, 2013 has been an exciting year for the Willoughby Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce as we have celebrated the merging of two chambers and enjoyed the benefits of more networking and more visibility for our members. To add to the present benefits that the chamber offers, we recently started a partnership with COSE to also offer COSE benefits at a discount to chamber members. Chamber members who are members of COSE will receive a discount on their COSE renewal fee and chamber members who wish to join COSE will receive a discount on their new COSE membership. You will be hearing more from COSE in the next few months as they will be represented at several of our upcoming events. In reviewing our membership dues for 2014, the board approved small increases in dues to cover various rising operational costs that come with a larger chamber and also so that we can continue to provide optimal services to our members. Many of our members enjoy the savings of benefits such as CompManagement worker’s comp or the Business Grant the chamber offers through the Educational Development Program which offset the cost of membership dues. Please take advantage of the various benefits the chamber offers that saves you money! Lastly, all of our members will be receiving a paper invoice for membership dues in the mail soon. As I look back on my first year here, it has been a pleasure to serve and assist you. There are many great people to thank for their support, time and commitment in continuing to make the Chamber a valuable organization for our members. A special thanks to Bob Fiala and Stacey Rodgers the Co-Chairs of the merged Chamber for 2013. Their collaboration, hard work, and great leadership made the merging of two chambers very successful and broadened opportunities for our members with this larger chamber organization. I also want to thank all of our committee chairs who volunteer so much of their time to make better programs for our members and the communities that we serve. Last, but certainly not least, I thank those of our board members who have completed their terms and will be stepping down from their positions on the board at the end of this year. We have a lot of exciting things planned for 2014 that will help chamber members build a stronger business and expand their visibility in Lake County. Thank you for the opportunity to help grow and strengthen your business. We look forward to working for you and with you in 2014! May you all have a blessed Holiday season! IN PARTNERSHIP WITH 800-825-6755 | WWW.COMPMGT.COM 888-247-7799 | WWW.CHSMCO.COM The employer mandate – What you need to know You may have heard about the employer mandate in the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a., health care reform law). But what exactly is it, and who has to comply? The Department of Treasury has released some initial rules so companies can begin planning, until the Internal Revenue Service releases final rules. Here are some of the main rules: Impact on businesses: • Businesses with 50 or more full-time employees (including full-time equivalents) must offer a mandated minimum level of coverage that people can afford. These companies are considered “applicable large employers.” • This mandate goes into effect for new or renewing plans starting January 1, 2014. If “applicable large employers” don’t follow the employer mandate, they must pay: • $2,000 per year per full-time employee (after the first 30) if any full-time employee gets government aid to lower his or her coverage cost through the health insurance marketplaces (a.k.a., exchanges) because minimum essential coverage wasn’t offered. • $2,000 per year per full-time employee (after the first 30) – or $3,000 per subsidized full-time employee, whichever is less – if coverage is not considered affordable (which has been defined as meaning that employee contribution costs for single coverage exceed 9.5% of the employee’s yearly earnings). Here are definitions of a few key terms about the employer mandate: • Applicable large employers: Those with 50 or more full-time employees (including full-time equivalents). To find out if you are an applicable large group employer*: 1. Add the number, month by month from the past year, of all employees that are full-time, full-time equivalent and seasonal. 2. Divide the total number of employees for the year by 12. 3. If the result is not a whole number round down to the next lowest whole number. 4. If the result is less than 50, the company is not an “applicable large employer” for the current calendar year. • Full-time employee: Employee who works an average of at least 30 hours per week. • Hours of service: Hours paid for performing work, or the right to be paid when no work is done – e.g., for paid time off for illness, vacations, holidays, etc. We will keep you up-to-date on how this mandate may affect you as the final rules are released by the government. For more information about the employer mandate and other health care reform topics, visit www.anthem.com/healthcarereform any time. * Offer of coverage, affordability safe harbors and assessable payments – Notice 2012-58 lists methods employers may use when calculating coverage offerings, conditions for using an affordability safe harbor and assessable payments. The rules depend on a variety of factors such the type of employer and employees (hourly, salary, seasonal, etc), unpaid employee leaves, look-back periods, etc. This content is provided solely for informational purposes.
