Born January 23, 1891 in the Bohemian “Musikwinkel”
(music corner) close to the district town of Eger, Roderich
Paesold grew up with musical instruments. His father owned
H
istory
his own string and bow business, and after his apprenticeship,
Roderich himself joined the family business. In 1939, he travelled
D
to London for business negotiations just as World War II began.
Throughout the entire war, Roderich was not allowed to leave the
L
United Kingdom, which later proved to be extremely beneficial.
During his stay, he was able to make important contacts in England,
O
and when he returned to Germany, he spoke English fluently, which
3•
S
was rather rare at that time.
Founder Roderich Paesold
After the war Roderich Paesold settled in the Bavarian town of
E
Bubenreuth and in 1950, he re-established the family bow-making
business. Due to Roderich’s talents in craftsmanship and business, the
A
company gained a reputation which went far beyond Germany’s borders.
Many important bow-makers studied or worked at the workshop of
P
Roderich Paesold.
In 1968, the German company Wenzel Schreiber & Söhne took over the
Paesold company. At that time, Paesold begun making high-quality string
H
instruments, which soon became some of the finest in the world market.
A new chapter was written when the Paesold company was integrated
C
into the internationally successful Boosey&Hawkes Group. Thanks to
worlwide sales distribution, Paesold products became available to leading
I
musicians in all countries.
R
Today, Paesold is strengthening its outstanding position in the world
market through extensive research and development activities. Most
E
specifically, Paesold is setting high standards in the field of varnishing.
For the development of their own varnishing formulas, Paesold has
D
access to a worldwide unique library of many rare, historic books.
Scientific research institutions all over Europe test Paesold bows
O
and string instruments repeatedly for their mechanical and acoustic
characteristics. However, for the master instrument and bow
R
makers at Paesold, the evaluation of their products by
professional orchestra musicians is even more important than
objective research results. Paesold products are among
Roderich Paesold at his 70 th anniversary
and the Paesold workforce 1961
the finest in the world, which is why many orchestra
musicians across the world choose to play Paesold.

ASTERS
There is no mystery about what makes one instrument model more expensive than another, if you
look closely at the ingredients that go into its
construction. Each instrument model Paesold
creates involves a carefully thought out and
executed set of standards that are both
measurable and obvious to the finished work.
These key ingredients include varnish, wood
quality, and skill level of the craftsman.
Varnish
Master Violinmakers from the Paesold
Company have concentrated their efforts
in the research of violin varnish. Aided by
years of knowledge in the art of violin
making, they have through experimentation and acoustic research developed
new varnishes which are used on Paesold
instruments. Paesold masters have also
developed varnishing techniques that are
used to produce the ”antique” finish found
on Paesold’s historic models.
Wood Quality
Part of the violinmaker’s art involves the
ability to judge the acoustic potential of each
piece of wood to be used for an instrument.
In this step the maker considers such things
as density and grain spacing as he grades wood
for each model. Each piece of graded wood
(A to AAA+) is then left to naturally air dry
for the appropriate number of years, the best
woods being allowed the longest drying time.
Grading of the maple for each model is of
particular importance because the wood must not
only possess the appropriate physical properties for
each model, but the desired amount of figuring. This
figuring or flaming is a phenomenon that occurs in
a very small percentage of maple, especially with in
the intensity that is desired for the finest instruments.
Wood worthy of an AAA rating and above is a very rare
commodity, especially when you consider the patience
and expense involved in allowing it the additional years
of drying.
Craftsmanship
In the German tradition of apprenticeship training, most of
Paesold’s craftsmen have achieved the degree of either Violinmaker
or Master Violinmaker. These titles are the achievement of a rigorous
training process that takes 4 and 7 years respectively to successfully
complete. All work on the student and intermediate models is carefully
supervised by these craftsmen, while the professional models are the
sole creation of a single Master Violinmaker.

MAkERS
Paesold’s bow-making workshop in Hagenau, Germany shares
an affinity with bow-making that stretches back over 100
years. Using skills that evolved during this time, Paesold
Master Bow Makers supervise all the work that goes into
crafting a Paesold bow. Their attention to detail and
appreciation of the history and traditions of bow making
has assured Paesold’s reputation is unsurpassed. Master
Bow Makers are also responsible for purchasing wood,
a duty which includes regular visits to Brazil to
personally inspect and select the pernambuco and
brazilwood. This large stock of natural air dried wood
allows Paesold to be a major supplier of wood to other
bow makers.
About the wood
All wood used for making Paesold bows is air dried
in the traditional manner. To help determine wood
quality in the early stages of bow construction Paesold
employs the use of Arcometer® testing. Unique to
Paesold, this testing combined with visual and physical
inspection by Master Bowmakers ensures perfectly
weighted, consistantly high quality balanced bows.
At this stage of the construction process, each stick
is graded in the Paesold manner in relation to its model
and mounting materials. As work progresses on each
stick, they are frequently visually inspected for defects
and physically tested in the traditional manner of bow
making to ensure the potential playing qualities of the
bow are fully realized.

About the finish
To add color to the stick and bring out the figure in the wood, Paesold

sticks are French Polished with shellac.

Paesold scientists have invented a unique quality

to Paesold and was developed by Paesold Master
Bow Makers to combine the best of modern
technology with a tradition of bow making that
stretches back over 100 years. This process allows
the craftsmen to evaluate the quality of each raw
bowstick, to ‘look into the wood’ in advance of

Selecting a bow will always be a matter of taste. Weight, balance, shape of the
