Depending on the colors you choose, it can be glitzy or subtly elegant. What’s less apparent is how simple it is to make — just a few repeated patterns and a basic clasp. The earrings can be whipped up in only 10 minutes. 3 1 2 2 3 1 1 bracelet foundation • Cut a 4-ft. (1.2m) piece of thread. Thread a beading needle and, leaving a 7-in. (18cm) tail, tie a 60 seed bead (the stopper bead) with an overhand knot (Basics). Alternate three charlottes and three bicone crystals. 44 2 Go back through the first and second charlotte/bicone pairs strung. 3 String: charlotte, bicone, charlotte, bicone, charlotte. Go back through the bicone the thread exited in step 2. This project is a challenge, but it’s worth the effort! Create seven variations of one bead with angle stitching by Laura Shea Transformations This piece grew out of experimenting with variations on my dodecahedron bead. I’ve already found 14 color formulas for this bracelet, plus lots of other possibilities. I love to be able to vary a shape just by changing the size and color of the beads while using the same basic pattern. I recommend you make the Plato’s Universe bead first, then tackle the variations. You’ll be so good at making these beads by the time you finish your bracelet, you won’t be able to resist making a couple more for lightweight earrings. 58 bracelet Autumn bracelet bead colors Plato’s universe split complements A: Montana B: Padparadscha close encounters A: Montana B: Erinite Gemini carpe beadum A: Montana B: Erinite A: Padparadscha B: Light Colorado topaz A: Erinite B: Padparadscha C: Light Colorado topaz D: Montana twin stars and hourglass A: Light Colorado topaz B: Padparadscha Editor’s note Most steps in each variation consist of making a loop and then going through an adjacent bead. To keep things from loosening (and to help create a firm finished bead), I went though every loop twice before going through the adjacent bead. Weave in the tail in the same way. 59 RHAPSODY IN (FAUX) RIVETS These handmade glass beads are by Stephanie Ann, stephaniebeads.com. Stack metal and glass on bead bars for a stylish necklace by Julie Young A great component moment: the invention of bead bars. Each bar has a ball at one end (that acts as a stopper) and a hole at the other end. Simply string beads and a chain link on each bar, then finish with a jump ring. There’s no hammering required to create a riveted look! 94 Weave a silky chain bracelet Combine chain and silk in a no-clasp bracelet by Ute Bernsen Silk ribbon provides color and a creative finish. 190 You don’t always need beads to bring color to a chain design. Try weaving bright silk strings through the chain instead. This technique is so easy, anybody can do it. And the strings come in so many colors, you won’t have to look too hard to find matching beads for earrings. Tip For easier weaving, use a folded piece of flexible beading wire as a needle to pull the silk string through the chain links. Tila ınspiration Make a three-strand bracelet with delicate details by Betsy Ramsey Sometimes it’s a bead’s color that inspires me, and sometimes it’s the shape. With Tila beads, it’s both. Available in stunning colors and shaped like tiny Chiclets, the flat squares have two holes, opening up a whole new world of design possibilities. 1 2 bracelet • Cut a ¾-in. (1.9cm) piece of French wire and an 18-in. (46cm) piece of beading thread. String a twisted-wire needle on each end of the thread and center the French wire. String the ends through a bicone crystal in opposite directions. On each end, string a 150 seed bead, a bicone, and a hole of a Tila bead. 3 a On one end, string: 1.8mm cube bead, bicone, 150, hole of a Tila. b On the other end, string: 150, bicone, cube, remaining hole of the Tila. 241
