AHR ABOUT US
AHR has a long-standing reputation for award-winning design
and the creation of innovative places and environments where
we live, work, learn and enjoy life.
We are one of Europe’s longest standing architecture and
building consultancy practices, with experience dating back to
1835. AHR today is one of Europe’s largest practices and has
evolved into an international business encompassing 450 staff
in 12 offices.
As architects we are passionate about design and the positive
effects good design can have on our environment. As building
consultants we are passionate about how we care for buildings
and how their creative re-use can enhance the fabric of our
communities.
Our collective experience and the creativity of our teams,
combined with our commitment to innovation and design
research, allows us to help our clients develop environments
that respond positively to the particular challenges of a project
and the wider social, economic and climatic issues we all face.
The way we design and care for our environment is changing
rapidly and we continue to seek innovative solutions and
develop new ways of working to meet the future needs of our
clients and society.

OUR APPROACH
We believe that good design is driven by our collective
passion to explore the art of what is possible, irrespective of
a project’s size or complexity. In doing so, we use a full range
of tools including creative thinking, technology, research and
innovation along with project management systems that drive
continuous improvement. The result is responsive design that
is functional, transformative, meaningful and inspiring.
We believe in a sense of place and the development of
sustainable communities, an approach to design that considers
and responds carefully to local cultures, lifestyle patterns and
architectural languages both internationally and nationally. Our
own teams are rich in diversity, culture and language, bringing
skills and experience from across the world to enrich the
design process.
We never lose sight of the people who use our buildings, the
communities they serve and the legacy we leave. Design and
sustainability are inseparable and as such we continue to focus
our research on reducing the gap between design and real life
performance. Responsibility is part of our core values.
We care about the impact our work has on the world and we
are here to make a positive difference.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES / WE
WANT TO DO THINGS BETTER, BETTER BY DESIGN.
DESIGN & INNOVATION
We want to do things better, better by design and not just by
accident. We want to deliver better services, better buildings
and better designs so we have a process:
We learn from what we have done before, gathering evidence
through post occupancy evaluations of what works and what
doesn’t and we then use this information to improve our
design process.
We undertake research and in 2004 we established our
research group, now evolved into the Advanced Design Group,
which has the express purpose of improving our knowledge
and developing advanced software and techniques that
enable us to explore design options further, faster and more
exhaustively.
We believe in open collaboration, bringing the best creative
minds together and involving our clients, contractors and
consultants. We also engage and work with a wide range of
stakeholders, all to ensure not just function and practicality,
but also ownership and pride.
To support our initiatives we have invested in both people and
new technologies. New advanced architectural technologies
such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), enables a
profound change in the quality of design information and the
extent to which it can be shared by clients, consultants and the
entire design team. The result is a significant transformation of
the design and construction process from the democratisation
of the design process, through the de-risking of projects
to significant improvement in management of facilities and
buildings.

OUR SERVICES
ARCHITECTURE / We are a multi award-winning
architecture practice with 170 years of experience creating
innovative and sustainable buildings and communities. As
one of Europe’s longest-standing and largest architecture
practices, we provide a range of services that respond
positively to the wider social, economic and climatic issues
affecting us in the 21st century. We work across ten sectors
and have a design-led, evidence- and research-based
approach that pays careful attention to context and a sense
of place.
Over the decades we have built a reputation for the use of
cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions such as
the creation of the world’s largest computerised dynamic
façade (capable of reducing solar gain by up to fifty per
cent) or the regular implementation of highly cost-effective
DfMA systems. We are known for our ground-breaking work
in the area of sustainability and offer building performance
evaluations to all our clients as a matter of course.
BUILDING CONSULTANCY / Our Building
Consultancy teams strive to gain a deep understanding of
our clients’ needs through collaboration with experts and
stakeholders. We provide a full range of services including
Design and Contract Management, Professional Services,
Asset and Property Management, Geomatics, Conservation
& Heritage, and Health and Safety Consultancy. Building
Consultancy has been an integral part of AHR’s service
offering since the practice was established in 1835. Our
expertise, combined with modern techniques and technology,
enables us to provide clients with a thorough and efficient
service to ensure the full potential of their property is realised.
AHR Building Consultancy works throughout the UK and
internationally, with a diverse range of clients across all
sectors and property types.

ADVANCED DESIGN / As a leading global
practice, AHR invests time, energy and money in research
and cross-disciplinary initiatives aimed at creating new
computational and parametric tools that can improve the
design process. The firm was an early pioneer in the use of
digital technologies, realising early on how Computational
Design, Advanced Modelling and more recently BIM, could
improve communication, enhance creativity and produce
better quality information. This not only greatly reduces the
potential risk for delays and cost overruns but also increases
the project’s design and environmental performance and
construction quality. By carrying out post-occupancy
evaluations and gathering evidence on how our buildings
perform, we are in an ideal position to understand energy
use, occupancy patterns and the lifecycle impact of early
design decisions. Our aim on every project is to reduce the
gap between a building’s designed performance and its
actual performance.
LANDSCAPE At AHR we see landscape design as
a form of meaningful place-making. The best designs are
elegant, sensitive and flexible interventions that can change
the dynamic, functionality and character of a space and
community. The landscape team has worked on a range of
landscape design projects in the public realm, civic, education,
healthcare, commercial and residential sectors and specialises
in the on-site delivery of multi-disciplinary schemes in the
commercial and public domains. At AHR, we have always
valued a collaborative approach and the practice was an
early pioneer of BIM in the area of landscape design. The
use of BIM helps us generate concept visualisations quickly
and effectively so that we can fully test our designs in three
dimensions and share each step of the design journey with
our clients. By creating a bespoke landscape template using
Revit software, we have the ability to combine information
into a single coordinated model that delivers best-practice
workflows and produces creative and cost-effective solutions.
INTERIORS / AHR believes in an integrated approach
IMAGING / Our in-house team has years of experience
to architecture and interiors and offers a full range of interior
design services, including renovation and refurbishment,
bespoke furniture design, space analysis and planning. From
hospitals to schools, restaurants to hotels, residential to office
schemes, the practice brings considerable experience across
all market sectors and a fresh, high-quality, international
approach. The practice believes in designing interior spaces
that are flexible and sustainable and that promote creativity
and productivity. This ensures the long-term well-being of
the building’s occupants but has economic ramifications too,
resulting in greater patronage, sales and staff retention.
URBAN DESIGN &
MASTERPLANNING / The unprecedented rate of
/
creating world-class 3D renders and architectural and graphic
design projects and a real understanding of architecture and
building form. At AHR, we consider our imaging department
to be an essential part of the practice’s offering and an
important strand in our commitment to international design
excellence. Our in-house team has years of experience
creating world-class 3D renders and architectural and graphic
design projects and a real understanding of architecture and
building form. The visualisations produced by AHR’s imaging
department are used both for traditional purposes, such as
during the planning and design processes, but also regularly
in high-profile media coverage and at marketing events, TV
appearances and site displays.
urbanisation, population growth and energy consumption
around the world has led to an urgent need for successful and
sustainable contemporary urban environments supported by
innovative transport solutions. Our local teams have worked
on schemes that range from large-scale regeneration projects
to exemplar green residential and mixed-use developments
and have garnered a reputation for excellence in the field.
We begin every project by researching the site’s specific
environmental, geographical and cultural conditions and
work right through from the planning and design stages to
construction and implementation. Past projects have been
in places as diverse as Dubai, Kazakhstan and the UK.

BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING
The digital revolution has transformed the way we operate.
Virtual reality has arrived and with it our ability to push the
boundaries of what we do. At the core of this revolution
is BIM.
In 2007 AHR as a practice embraced BIM technology, having
recognised early the impact it would have on the Construction
industry. Its potential for enhancing creativity, improving
communication, and producing better quality information and
ultimately reducing the time, cost and quality risk associated
with all building projects.
BIM enables us to build, collaboratively, computer generated
models of our designs, containing digital objects that carry
information about the design, construction and operation of
an asset. In a virtual world we can also explore our designs – to
appreciate a space or a function, and to co-ordinate the design
with the work of others.
BIM however, has limitations so we are now looking beyond
BIM to Virtual Information Modelling (VIM), as a means of
exploring the true potential of what can be achieved using
this technology.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Any criteria for the measurement of good architecture has to
encompass sustainability as a foundation stone.
Central to our ethos is our commitment to address social,
environmental and economic challenges through intelligent,
thoughtful, considered and informed design.
We recognise the impact of climate change on our
environment and in designing buildings we seek not to
mortgage our children’s futures. Our aim is to design buildings
that have the minimum impact on the environment and are
sufficiently adaptable to be resilient to future changes.
We are specifically interested in ‘minding the gap’: identifying
and reducing the gap between how a building is designed to
work and how it actually performs. So we learn from what we
do, returning to projects to see how they are performing.
We use this feedback to inform the design process, enabling a
continuous measurable improvement in building performance.
In turn leading to increased energy performance, improved
carbon reduction and a reduction in waste.
Sustainable design services:
-Portfolio level energy analysis and benchmarking
-Embodied carbon analysis
-Building performance evaluation for existing stock
and new build -Retrofit for climate change resilience - low-carbon retrofit
strategy including optimisation of portfolio-wide retrofit
strategies based on batch-simulation and gathered data
-Energy and comfort simulation with batch calculations
to optimise building and portfolio level investment in
low-carbon measures
-Risk analysis for achieving low operational energy use
and optimal indoor environmental quality in operation
-Building performance contract management /
advisory service
-Use of BIM for whole-life building management

Client Abu Dhabi Investment Council
Completion 2013
Won on the basis of an invited International design
competition, the brief for new headquarters called for ‘a
contemporary building which should be recognised as one
of the landmarks associated with the City of Abu Dhabi’.
The design concept is derived from an algorithmic
composition, which is informed by Islamic principles of
design, from which the form of the towers together with
the honeycomb structural frame has been generated. This
has been supplemented by the application of a dynamic
translucent ‘mashrabiya’ which opens and closes in response
to the movement of the sun, reducing solar gain by up to 20%.
The resulting composition seeks to create a building which is
both culturally and environmentally responsive, reflecting the
aspirations of the brief while also respecting the emergent
Abu Dhabi 2030 Plan.
The two 25-storey towers incorporate an entrance podium
together with two levels of basement parking and provide over
350,000 ft² of high grade office accommodation. The turnkey
project, which is targeting a LEED Silver rating was completed
in September 2013.

GDYNIA / POLAND
Client Allcon
Completion 2009
AHR prepared the design of a business park located on two
post-industrial sites in Gdynia, Poland. Our solution places over
30,000 m² net of B plus office space in five separate buildings.
The design sets four of the buildings back against the rear
boundary ensuring good visibility and identification of each
building from the main road. The front of the site is reserved
for a larger building – planned to be the headquarters of one of
the tenant companies. Parking is located in one underground

STERLINGA OFFICE BUILDING
LODZ / POLAND
Client Hines
Completion 2011
This city centre site brought with it many constraints which
severely limited the permitted massing of the development.
Negotiations with the local authority eventually resulted in
a larger net building area than was initially envisaged by
the client.
The height of the front elevation corresponds to the
neighbouring buildings. The ground floor includes a canteen
and retail spaces.
When completed, the project received a great degree of
interest from perspective tenants and is today 100% occupied.
NEPTUN OFFICE TOWER
GDANSK / POLAND
Client Hines
Completion 2014
The project, a result of a winning design competition entry, is
particularly challenging due to the very specific requirements
of the local plan, risk of overshadowing existing residential
buildings and rights of light. The design solution offers a slim
tower with a substantial ‘cut’ to allow direct sunlight into the
apartments nearby.
The brief called for 15,000 m² of net rentable office space
and parking for approximately 160 cars. Due to very limited
possibilities parking is organised on three underground
levels, covering the entire plot. Several retail spaces are
accommodated on the ground floor, facing the public spaces
of the city square and main high street.

Value $670m
Green Block Astana, is a new mixed-use masterplan forming
part of the Expo 2017 Astana Exposition, which will focus on
future energy production and usage.
Inspiration for the 100,000 m² project was taken from nature,
where the cellular structure of a leaf was used to create a
masterplan able to address the local climate - sheltering itself
from the harsh winter winds, whilst making best use of
solar energy.
The project drew on the expertise of our Advanced Design
Group (ADG), who created bespoke tools for developing a
flexible grid for the complex packing of cellular plots, resulting
in many potential adjacencies and interesting enclosed spatial
qualities. Adjacencies between functions were resolved
while maintaining the functional area requirements in a
diagrammatic form before applying it to the cellular grid.
The ADG also helped to develop the detail design for the
Biodomes that link the public spaces together, providing
sheltered arcades for circulating between buildings during
the winter months. The project will also showcase a series of
cutting edge sustainability measures.

The city of St. Petersburg is currently undertaking a large scale
programme of housing renewal. We were appointed to work
with Mace and SPb Renovation as part of the team to deliver
an initial development of over 12,000 new homes and mixed
development at Slavyanka on the southern bank of the Neva
River. The project, named Gutenborg, seeks to establish a high
quality urban environment, challenge the local procurement
environment and introduce Western European levels of quality
to the Russian residential market.
Our teams in London, Warsaw, Glasgow and Moscow are
working together to bring a comprehensive level of local
and wider design and industry knowledge to the project. A
series of housing typologies have been developed including
a number of high-rise towers, a central shopping complex
and further mid-rise development. The tall buildings will enjoy
panoramic views across the Neva River and provide Class A
private sale housing.

Client Limitless / RDI
This project which is now under construction will create a
community of 12,000 residents within an ecologically diverse
landscape including areas of existing woodland. Phase One
of the development, which consists of 100,000 m², provides
a mixture of low-rise apartments, town houses and villas and
is supported by a full range of retail, leisure, educational and
healthcare facilities.
Two block-types have been designed, each with three façade
variations, ensuring that the development will feel like it has
grown organically and that residents can identify with their
individual buildings. The traffic strategy has been engineered
to create pedestrian-friendly spaces, with completely car-free
streets in the town house zone.

HEATHROW AIRPORT - T2 MSCP
LONDON / UK
Client Laing O’Rourke
Completion 2014
Heathrow Airport is undergoing a significant capital
investment programme to update its entire passenger
terminal offer to align with Terminal 5. The new Terminal 2A
is a £1billion investment which precipitates the entire Central
Terminal area’s move from the historic ‘star’ planning pattern,
to the new ‘toast-rack’ pattern based around two parallel
runways.
AHR was commissioned to carry out the design and delivery
of a large six level multi-storey car park which will sit alongside
the main landside elevation of the new Terminal 2A building.
The two structures will be separated by a large covered court
which will become the front door to the new terminal building
with approximately 30 million passengers passing through it
each year.
The covered court is approximately 120m in length, 30m wide
and 30m high, comparable in size to the great turbine hall at
the Tate Modern. The covered court houses a large suspended
art installation that serves as a highly recognisable part of
the Heathrow experience. The project was designed and
documented using a Revit BIM approach across all disciplines.

INTER MODAL TRANSIT CENTRE
ABU DHABI / UAE
Client Abu Dhabi Airport Company
The proposed design for the new Abu Dhabi intermodal
transit centre was conceived from its function as a transport
interchange between the new midfield terminal, various rail
links and connection to the future ‘airport city’ development.
The transit centre’s inherent dynamic is one of transition - a
funnel between two poles. The design proposal celebrates
this function as a funnel and turns it into its primary spatial
expression, fusing the transfer hall and the passage to the new
Midfield Terminal into one spatial continuum. The notion of
compression and expansion is used to differentiate zones and
create spatial drama. It constitutes the overarching principle
that unifies the design, sponsors its identity and makes it
recognisable. The resulting spatial configuration is one of
‘no excess’ - a streamlined and purist sculptural manifestation
of its purpose.
The primary design objective for this proposal is to create a
superior passenger experience, a hassle free environment
that enables intuitive way-finding and a smooth journey that is
supported by an equally efficient, simple and logical terminal
operation.

to the elegant but practical finishes employed in the 22 storey
clinical tower that houses 360 beds and intensive care facilities
at the top of the facility.
The hospital’s core diagnostic and treatment services occupy
the first three levels of the main hospital building, ensuring that

assisted living housing.
This is achieved on a site that already houses the existing
hospital; is overlooked by some very high quality housing and
is in a conservation area. Creativity and technical skill were

buildings and linking residential sectors with the retail.
The hotel is a prominent landmark and gateway. Its north
façade forms part of the arc which captures and defines the

In plan, the two levels of the building have been offset to
