The way we design and care for our environment is changing rapidly and we continue to seek innovative solutions and develop new ways of working to meet the future needs of our clients and society. Building Futures / 3 RESPONSIBILITY / INTEGRITY / ETHICS / DYNAMIC / INTELLIGENT / UNDERSTANDING / INNOVATIVE 4 / Building Futures OUR APPROACH We believe that good design is driven by our collective passion to explore the art of what is possible, irrespective of a project’s size or complexity. In doing so, we use a full range of tools including creative thinking, technology, research and innovation along with project management systems that drive continuous improvement. The result is responsive design that is functional, transformative, meaningful and inspiring. We believe in a sense of place and the development of sustainable communities, an approach to design that considers and responds carefully to local cultures, lifestyle patterns and architectural languages both internationally and nationally. Our own teams are rich in diversity, culture and language, bringing skills and experience from across the world to enrich the design process. We never lose sight of the people who use our buildings, the communities they serve and the legacy we leave. Design and sustainability are inseparable and as such we continue to focus our research on reducing the gap between design and real life performance. Responsibility is part of our core values. We care about the impact our work has on the world and we are here to make a positive difference. Building Futures / 5 WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT? WE HAVE DEVELOPED AN EVIDENCE BASED APPROACH TO DESIGN AND BUILDING CONSULTING THAT COMBINES CREATIVE THINKING, RESEARCH AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES / WE ARE IMAGINATIVE, WE START WITH AN OPEN MIND / WE ARE COLLABORATIVE, WORKING CLOSELY WITH CLIENTS AND CONSULTANTS MAXIMISES OUR ABILITY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS / WE ARE EXPERTS, WITH OVER 170 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE / WE LEARN, WE REVIEW OUR PROJECTS TO SEE HOW OUR BUILDINGS PERFORM / WE RESEARCH, GOOD DESIGN IS DRIVEN BY OUR PASSION TO EXPLORE THE ART OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE / WE APPLY TECHNOLOGY, WE RECOGNISE AND ARE INVESTING IN ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES / WE WANT TO DO THINGS BETTER, BETTER BY DESIGN. DESIGN & INNOVATION We want to do things better, better by design and not just by accident. We want to deliver better services, better buildings and better designs so we have a process: We learn from what we have done before, gathering evidence through post occupancy evaluations of what works and what doesn’t and we then use this information to improve our design process. We undertake research and in 2004 we established our research group, now evolved into the Advanced Design Group, which has the express purpose of improving our knowledge and developing advanced software and techniques that enable us to explore design options further, faster and more exhaustively. We believe in open collaboration, bringing the best creative minds together and involving our clients, contractors and consultants. We also engage and work with a wide range of stakeholders, all to ensure not just function and practicality, but also ownership and pride. To support our initiatives we have invested in both people and new technologies. New advanced architectural technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), enables a profound change in the quality of design information and the extent to which it can be shared by clients, consultants and the entire design team. The result is a significant transformation of the design and construction process from the democratisation of the design process, through the de-risking of projects to significant improvement in management of facilities and buildings. Building Futures / 7 OUR SERVICES ARCHITECTURE / We are a multi award-winning architecture practice with 170 years of experience creating innovative and sustainable buildings and communities. The firm was an early pioneer in the use of digital technologies, realising early on how Computational Design, Advanced Modelling and more recently BIM, could improve communication, enhance creativity and produce better quality information. This not only greatly reduces the potential risk for delays and cost overruns but also increases the project’s design and environmental performance and construction quality. By carrying out post-occupancy evaluations and gathering evidence on how our buildings perform, we are in an ideal position to understand energy use, occupancy patterns and the lifecycle impact of early design decisions. Our aim on every project is to reduce the gap between a building’s designed performance and its actual performance. LANDSCAPE At AHR we see landscape design as a form of meaningful place-making. The best designs are elegant, sensitive and flexible interventions that can change the dynamic, functionality and character of a space and community. The landscape team has worked on a range of landscape design projects in the public realm, civic, education, healthcare, commercial and residential sectors and specialises in the on-site delivery of multi-disciplinary schemes in the commercial and public domains. At AHR, we have always valued a collaborative approach and the practice was an early pioneer of BIM in the area of landscape design. The use of BIM helps us generate concept visualisations quickly and effectively so that we can fully test our designs in three dimensions and share each step of the design journey with our clients. By creating a bespoke landscape template using Revit software, we have the ability to combine information into a single coordinated model that delivers best-practice workflows and produces creative and cost-effective solutions. INTERIORS / AHR believes in an integrated approach IMAGING / Our in-house team has years of experience to architecture and interiors and offers a full range of interior design services, including renovation and refurbishment, bespoke furniture design, space analysis and planning. Our in-house team has years of experience creating world-class 3D renders and architectural and graphic design projects and a real understanding of architecture and building form. The visualisations produced by AHR’s imaging department are used both for traditional purposes, such as during the planning and design processes, but also regularly in high-profile media coverage and at marketing events, TV appearances and site displays. urbanisation, population growth and energy consumption around the world has led to an urgent need for successful and sustainable contemporary urban environments supported by innovative transport solutions. Our local teams have worked on schemes that range from large-scale regeneration projects to exemplar green residential and mixed-use developments and have garnered a reputation for excellence in the field. We begin every project by researching the site’s specific environmental, geographical and cultural conditions and work right through from the planning and design stages to construction and implementation. Past projects have been in places as diverse as Dubai, Kazakhstan and the UK. Building Futures / 9 Darwen Aldridge Community Academy, Darwen UK BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING The digital revolution has transformed the way we operate. Virtual reality has arrived and with it our ability to push the boundaries of what we do. At the core of this revolution is BIM. In 2007 AHR as a practice embraced BIM technology, having recognised early the impact it would have on the Construction industry. Its potential for enhancing creativity, improving communication, and producing better quality information and ultimately reducing the time, cost and quality risk associated with all building projects. BIM enables us to build, collaboratively, computer generated models of our designs, containing digital objects that carry information about the design, construction and operation of an asset. In a virtual world we can also explore our designs – to appreciate a space or a function, and to co-ordinate the design with the work of others. BIM however, has limitations so we are now looking beyond BIM to Virtual Information Modelling (VIM), as a means of exploring the true potential of what can be achieved using this technology. Building Futures / 11 Al Bahr Towers, Abu Dhabi UAE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Any criteria for the measurement of good architecture has to encompass sustainability as a foundation stone. Central to our ethos is our commitment to address social, environmental and economic challenges through intelligent, thoughtful, considered and informed design. We recognise the impact of climate change on our environment and in designing buildings we seek not to mortgage our children’s futures. Our aim is to design buildings that have the minimum impact on the environment and are sufficiently adaptable to be resilient to future changes. We are specifically interested in ‘minding the gap’: identifying and reducing the gap between how a building is designed to work and how it actually performs. So we learn from what we do, returning to projects to see how they are performing. We use this feedback to inform the design process, enabling a continuous measurable improvement in building performance. In turn leading to increased energy performance, improved carbon reduction and a reduction in waste. Sustainable design services: -Portfolio level energy analysis and benchmarking -Embodied carbon analysis -Building performance evaluation for existing stock and new build -Retrofit for climate change resilience - low-carbon retrofit strategy including optimisation of portfolio-wide retrofit strategies based on batch-simulation and gathered data -Energy and comfort simulation with batch calculations to optimise building and portfolio level investment in low-carbon measures -Risk analysis for achieving low operational energy use and optimal indoor environmental quality in operation -Building performance contract management / advisory service -Use of BIM for whole-life building management Building Futures / 13 PRIMARY / SECONDARY / ACADEMIES / COLLEGES / UNIVERSITIES / EDUCATION HOLLAND PARK SCHOOL LONDON / UK Client Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Value £80m Completion 2012 The site for the Holland Park School is located in a conservation area adjacent to Holland Park between Kensington and Notting Hill. Negotiations with the local authority eventually resulted in a larger net building area than was initially envisaged by the client. The height of the front elevation corresponds to the neighbouring buildings. The ground floor includes a canteen and retail spaces. When completed, the project received a great degree of interest from perspective tenants and is today 100% occupied. NEPTUN OFFICE TOWER GDANSK / POLAND Client Hines Completion 2014 The project, a result of a winning design competition entry, is particularly challenging due to the very specific requirements of the local plan, risk of overshadowing existing residential buildings and rights of light. The design solution offers a slim tower with a substantial ‘cut’ to allow direct sunlight into the apartments nearby. The brief called for 15,000 m² of net rentable office space and parking for approximately 160 cars. Due to very limited possibilities parking is organised on three underground levels, covering the entire plot. Several retail spaces are accommodated on the ground floor, facing the public spaces of the city square and main high street. HOUSING / COMMUNITY / PRIVATE / PUBLIC / APARTMENTS / RESIDENTIAL WEST TOWER LIVERPOOL / UK Client The Beetham Organisation Value £35m West Tower was built as the final phase of a major regeneration project at the former Liverpool Eye Hospital site on Old Hall Street. Standing at 40 floors and accommodating 127 apartments and five floors of Grade A office space the towers slim elegant design addresses the city scape. The fully glazed rounded form of the resulting building takes advantage of its limited footprint in order to accentuate the tower’s slender appearance whilst its orientation and termination make the most of panoramic views over the city from the river and various inland vistas. AHR is part of a specialist, multi-disciplinary team led by URS (Scott Wilson) Railways, who used a 3D BIM model to deliver the design for the station. The station will also have two large over-site commercial developments and will be fully operational in 2018. EUSTON STATION LONDON / UK Client Network Rail Completion 2014 The work at Euston Station will transform the existing concourse and retail by restoring the elegance of the main concourse and inserting rich materials to increase retail revenue. AHR has developed a coherent language for the station wayfinding and retail signage. Improvements to the passenger experience will be provided by better connection between internal and external concourses, simplifying routes to the platforms and improving passenger information. The work draws on our expertise in transport retail and has demonstrated how the built environment directly affects passenger behaviour and retail income. The station and its environs were scanned into BIM format to give the design team a detailed 3D Topographical Survey of the existing building. Building Transport / 65 HIGHWAY 407 STATION TORONTO / CANADA Client Toronto Transit Commission Completion 2014 Highway 407 Station is a key base in Toronto’s ‘Transit City 2050’ and serves as a strategic interchange between its park and ride, subway, express guided bus transitway and local bus services located adjacent to the station which also reduces inner city congestion. Key concepts of the scheme include minimising passenger circulation distances by anchoring the transit nodes around a central retail concourse, providing column free spaces for simplified wayfinding and direct sunlight deep into the station and subway platform, reducing the need for artificial light. The material palette sources natural materials that communicate the simple elegant design and ensure a high quality environment for passengers and employees of Toronto Transit Commission. 66 / Building Transport Building Transport / 67 ROCHDALE INTERCHANGE ROCHDALE / UK Client Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Completion 2013 Rochdale Interchange, the first of Transport for Greater Manchester’s new generation of public transport facilities forms a key component in the Rochdale Renaissance Masterplan. Delivered in partnerships with Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, and Rochdale Development Agency, this interchange opened in November 2013. The use of form and structure creates a dramatic and impressive gateway for visitors and daily users, providing an enhanced user experience, passenger facilities and capacity for growth. The station is also one of Europe’s first hydroelectric powered interchanges. Completion 2009 - Ongoing AHR was appointed by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport to provide design services for the refurbishment of three stations within the Glasgow Subway system, including Hillhead, Ibrox and Kelvinhall. The stations have been designed to increase the visibility and street presence externally whilst providing a welcoming environment that focuses on a consistent layout and a clear, calm and uncluttered interior with simple, bright and durable finishes that promote a reassuring and enjoyable passenger experience. Serving a high volume of passenger traffic, the stations have successfully maintained a live operating environment throughout the construction period to avoid disruption at peak travel times. Awards -‘Best Integrated Transport Project’ Scottish Transport Awards 2013 ROTHERHAM CENTRAL STATION ROTHERHAM / UK Client South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive Value £8.5m Completion 2012 The station design uses a striking roof structure to create a landmark gateway to the town centre and ensures the plans reflect its position as a key component towards the town’s regeneration and Urban Renaissance programme. The scheme sees the station significantly upgraded to rival the already improved stations in Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield. The design of the transport hub unifies the station’s elements within a coherent architectural and landscaping strategy, enhancing the resident, visitor and user experience that embraces the principles of social, economic and environmental sustainability. The station which officially opened in July 2012 presents a dramatic and architecturally impressive gateway for visitors and daily users. Awards -WINNER ‘Station Excellence Award’ Rail Business Awards 2014 - SHORTLISTED ‘Infrastructure Award’ RICS Awards 2013 Building Transport / 71 INTER MODAL TRANSIT CENTRE ABU DHABI / UAE Client Abu Dhabi Airport Company The proposed design for the new Abu Dhabi intermodal transit centre was conceived from its function as a transport interchange between the new midfield terminal, various rail links and connection to the future ‘airport city’ development. The transit centre’s inherent dynamic is one of transition - a funnel between two poles. The design proposal celebrates this function as a funnel and turns it into its primary spatial expression, fusing the transfer hall and the passage to the new Midfield Terminal into one spatial continuum. The notion of compression and expansion is used to differentiate zones and create spatial drama. It constitutes the overarching principle that unifies the design, sponsors its identity and makes it recognisable. The resulting spatial configuration is one of ‘no excess’ - a streamlined and purist sculptural manifestation of its purpose. The primary design objective for this proposal is to create a superior passenger experience, a hassle free environment that enables intuitive way-finding and a smooth journey that is supported by an equally efficient, simple and logical terminal operation. 72 / Building Transport INNOVATION / SCIENCE / INDUSTRIAL / ENTERPRISE / ENERGY / LABS / RESEARCH / TECHNOLOGY SEW EURODRIVE UK HEADQUARTERS NORMANTON / UK Client SEW Eurodrive Value £10m Completion 2013 AHR’s successful design competition entry for SEW Eurodrive provides an exciting new UK headquarters for this German Manufacturing company. At the heart of the Hospital’s model of care is the notion of ‘7-star’ treatment. This ethos pervades all aspects of the hospital from the use of ‘Red Coats’ to guide and assist visitors, to the elegant but practical finishes employed in the 22 storey clinical tower that houses 360 beds and intensive care facilities at the top of the facility. The hospital’s core diagnostic and treatment services occupy the first three levels of the main hospital building, ensuring that these interventional departments are conveniently located to allow easy access for the highly flexible outpatient and inpatient clinics. They also facilitate staff convenience and logistical support from the lower levels. CCAD was completed in collaboration with Aedas Hong Kong and UAE offices. Building Health / 85 POSSILPARK HEALTH & CARE CENTRE GLASGOW / UK Client NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Value £6.3m Completion 2013 As part of the Glasgow and Clyde regeneration plan for a derelict area, this new health centre has been designed to provide a prominent facility for the community. The 3120 m² centre serves as a ‘one stop shop’, providing access to multiple patient services during a single visit. It houses GP surgeries, dentist and Community Health Care Partnership (CHCP) accommodation, including child development, podiatry, physiotherapy, and community social work. The centre has been designed with the latest standards giving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’. TOWNLANDS COMMUNITY HOSPITAL HENLEY-ON-THAMES / UK Client Vinci Construction UK Limited for Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust Value £9m Completion 2014 The Townlands Community Hospital is a delightful response to a very challenging brief and highly constrained site. The masterplan incorporates not just the hospital with its 36 beds (including Palliative Care), four diagnostic, rehabilitation and minor injuries services. It also includes a 64 bed care home and assisted living housing. This is achieved on a site that already houses the existing hospital; is overlooked by some very high quality housing and is in a conservation area. Creativity and technical skill were applied in equal measure to ensure that the new facility nestles into the existing landscape to belie its true scale, and can be delivered in a single phase without affecting the operation of the existing facility. 88 / Building Health HOTELS / CONFERENCE / BARS / RESORT / INTERIORS / APARTHOTEL / HOSPITALITY 01 92 / Building Hospitality 02 03 HILTON HOTEL LIVERPOOL / UK Client Grosvenor Ltd Value £42m Completion 2012 The Hilton Hotel was conceived as part of the Liverpool One Paradise Street Regeneration scheme, developed by Grosvenor with Liverpool City Council and masterplanned by Architects BDP and Pelli Clarke Pelli. The masterplanning concept for the site was ‘an ellipse against the sky,’ a series of dramatic arcs sweeping across Chavasse Park defining buildings and linking residential sectors with the retail. The hotel is a prominent landmark and gateway. Its north façade forms part of the arc which captures and defines the boundary to the parkland thus becoming part of the larger composition. The brief was to design a 4-star hotel containing restaurant, coffee shop, lobby bar, ballroom and conference facilities with 215 guest rooms including a Presidential Suite. The top three floors were designed as residential apartments with an A3 unit to the east of the building on the ground floor. 01 Exterior view at dusk 02 Executive room interior 03Presidential suite Building Hospitality / 93 01 ADAGIO APARTHOTEL LIVERPOOL / UK Client Merepark Value £20m Completion 2013 The setting for the new Adagio Aparthotel (the first in the UK) is the former Lewis Department Store in Liverpool. The building’s remaining original 1950’s modernist features were restored, and the language of the new interior scheme was designed to complement and reinforce the post war styling. The former cafeteria became the new Breakfast Room, with its listed tiled murals and geometric lights. Timber panelled artwork from the building’s original ‘Mersey Room’ have also been restored and sympathetically refitted in the hotel’s corridors, creating a historical narrative of Liverpool that guests can appreciate in its entirety. The new lighting elements and fitted furniture pay respect to the building’s heritage and again, endorse the schemes 1950’s overtones. 94 / Building Hospitality 02 01New breakfast room with listed tiled mural and geometric lights 02Hotel reception 03Exterior view of the Grade II listed building 03 01 External view from Dostyk 02 Hotel restaurant 03Reception area 01 02 03 NOVOTEL HOTEL ALMATY / KAZAKHSTAN Client Accor Group Completion 2014 AHR is designing the 4-star Novotel Hotel in Almaty for one of the global leading operators, Accor Group. The new development is located in Almaty’s previous capital City of Kazakhstan, in the centre of the town, in front of one of main squares Abay Plaza, next to the congress hall and cable car Kok-tobe. The new hotel will offer 191 rooms including a maximum of six suites. The development includes a F&B zone, restaurant and lobby bar, conference facilities with multifunction room, spa centre with a swimming pool, bar, and business lounge. AHR is the full scope designer from concept through planning including construction documentation and interior design. Building Hospitality / 97 RADISSON HOTEL ZAPOROZHE / UKRAINE Client Q – tec Completion Designed 2007 AHR has developed a scheme design for a 185 room 4-star hotel beside the River Dniepr in the centre of Zaporozhe. The project also includes a 600 m² Paulaner restaurant. The design draws inspiration from site – an old granite quarry which is now an attractive pond surrounded by willows. The terraced podium containing the public functions grows seamlessly out of the granite strata. The guestroom floors hover above – a very simple volume with a delicately textured façade reminiscent of the willow trees. 98 / Building Hospitality RADISSON HOTEL & MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT YEREVAN / ARMENIA Client X Group Completion [Design Completion] 2010 This spectacular cliff top site is located within a bend in the Hrazdan River Gorge next to the Haghtanak Bridge, the gateway to Yerevan City Centre. It enjoys unobstructed views of the iconic Mount Ararat and close by are a series of important architectural monuments. Views to and across the site were therefore a key designgenerator and three alternative designs were presented to the City Planning Department. The version which received planning approval features a single slender tower housing office and hotel, with retail, convention and spa subsumed into a podium with a grass roof that merges seamlessly into the Basalt cliff. COURTS / CUSTODIAL / MUSEUMS / FIRE / POLICE FORCE / GOVERNMENT / CIVIC & COMMUNITY COLCHESTER MAGISTRATES’ COURTS ESSEX / UK Client Her Majesty’s Courts Service (HMCS) Value £13m Completion 2012 Colchester Magistrates’ Court accommodates five court rooms, including one Youth Court, on a confined and high profile site. The Courthouse frames and provides a focal point to a new public square. Therefore, the site, though constrained, is key to the greater masterplan for the regeneration of Colchester. The proposal responds to the urban design brief by addressing the new square with a prominent five-storey element, housing two courtrooms stacked above one another immediately above the main entrance from the square. The Courthouse is designed to the HMCS Design Guide 2007 and achieves BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and other specific targets from the Government Framework for Sustainable Development. 102 / Building Civic & Community Building Futures / 103 “The building has been extremely well thought through and my colleagues and I feel very privileged to be its first tenants.” Chief Superintendent Russ Jackson GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE DIVISIONAL HEADQUARTERS MANCHESTER / UK Client Greater Manchester Police / Ask Goodman Developments Ltd Value £30m Completion 2011 The new building sits adjacent the new Force Headquarters building, also by AHR, and provides administrative, operational and custody facilities. The building represents a change in the way Greater Manchester Police wanted to carry out their work and the way they wished to be perceived, in providing a more open and transparent service. The four storey office space fronts directly on to the public realm and is constructed from a combination of white precast concrete and glass. Behind this sits a custody facility with two suites, one high security unit for 12 detainees and a standard custody suite for 30. The administrative functions are separated from the custody areas by a double height circulation ‘street’ with a glazed roof, which doubles as an informal meeting space. The proposal addresses the town planning brief for the precinct by completing the streetscape, with its volume arranged to address both the large office buildings to the west and south and the smaller scale listed building immediately adjacent to the north. This volume provides the main court level on the first floor, and comprises four Magistrates’ courts, with the Crown Court and Family Court sitting at the second floor level above. The main entrance is positioned to be visible from the town centre approach. The court house has been designed to the HMCS Design Guide 2007, and has achieved BREEAM excellent and other specific targets from the Government Framework for Sustainable Development. 03 KEYNSHAM TOWN HALL KEYNSHAM / UK Client Bath & North East Somerset Council Value circa £30m Completion 2014 AHR was appointed to design Bath & North East Somerset Council’s redevelopment of the Keynsham Town Hall complex and library. The redevelopment serves as a catalyst for the regeneration of Keynsham, providing new Council office space, retail units, a library, one-stop shop for Council and other local public sector services and improved public space for residents and visitors. It has also been designed to help the retail environment for traders, providing a boost to the local economy. The regeneration is part of the Council’s plans to reduce the amount of office space it uses and become even more financially efficient. Its office use will reduce from 12 to just four. Reduced running costs will deliver 10 per cent annual savings that will benefit the local taxpayer public purse. The Council’s carbon footprint, specifically in its buildings, will be reduced by up to 70 per cent. Building Civic & Community / 109 HIGH STREET / MIXED-USE / MALLS / FOOD / CONCEPT / DESTINATION / RETAIL EMPORIUM MALL LAHORE / PAKISTAN Client Nishat Group Completion 2015 AHR has been appointed to design the largest retail led leisure development in south Lahore, Pakistan, creating an iconic destination for the Punjab province. The scheme will occupy 2.1 million ft² of retail and entertainment space and has been designed to encompass a sequence of eye catching crystal shaped structures and feature deep strong colour and textiles to create a powerful feeling of opulence. Emporium Mall which is now under construction, will be home to a state of the art cinema complex, a host of food courts and a contemporary styled hotel. The ground breaking multi-million pound scheme will attract a wealth of leading national and international retail brand names as well as a small percentage of commercial activity. 112 / Building Retail MANCHESTER AIRPORT TERMINAL 1 RETAIL & SECURITY MANCHESTER / UK Client Manchester Airport Developments Value £34m Completion 2009 The T1 experience revives the glamour of air travel through careful design of the departure lounge and the elements within minimising queuing, increasing dwell time through the retail lounge, and maximising revenue opportunities for the airport. Phase 1 provided a new dining experience, offering a range of bars, cafés and restaurants overlooking the airfield. Phase two provided a new build 14-lane CSZ to minimise passengers’ waiting times and improve operational efficiency. The final phase increased the size and quality of the departure lounge and retail environment providing a relaxing and unique airport experience. AHR was the managing consultant and lead architect for the project, and also provided concept design for the expanded retail concessions areas. 114 / Building Retail Awards - ‘Best Out of Town Retail Scheme and Gold Award’ BCSC 2009 -Highly Commended ‘Most Innovative Retail & Leisure Concept of the Year Award’ RLI Global Awards 2010 Building Retail / 115 PACKAGES RETAIL MALL LAHORE / PAKISTAN Client Packages Ltd Completion 2016 Phase One of a mixed used masterplan is designed to create a new retail and leisure attraction. In addition to over 300,000 ft² of retail the centre will be home to a large Hypermarket, a multi-screen cinema complex, food court, exhibition and play/entertainment spaces. Secure parking and drop-off areas within the building, with landscaped links to the external parking areas provide flexible access opportunities throughout the complex. 116 / Building Retail WILANÓW ONE RETAIL WARSAW / POLAND Client Wilanów This mixed use development will form the final phase of the Wilanów One residential neighbourhood. Rather than design a conventional single-volume retail mall the design teams’ proposal breaks down the massing into smaller elements creating the impression of a ‘townscape’ with both open-air and enclosed public spaces. Alongside the main retail function the complex provides a range of other facilities for the community such as fitness club, childcare centre, restaurants and offices. All vehicular movements are directed to the underground level, keeping the ground plane as a safe and attractive landscaped environment for pedestrians and cyclists. 118 / Building Retail HARVEY NICHOLS POD MANCHESTER / UK Client Harvey Nichols AHR has been appointed to design a new retail pod for Harvey Nichols that will allow their Manchester store to provide an exciting events space. The building has a linear form which will aid build-ability, flexibility and functionality. The columns of the pod serve a dual purpose in the proposed design. They provide structure and are also extruded into an elegant curved form to give a definitive organic appearance. Three different structural fins have been designed to create an undulating rhythm and give the building a contemporary, high quality and architectural significant appearance. In plan, the two levels of the building have been offset to allow further interesting indoor/outdoor spaces, adding to the stores visual appearance and making the most of the location by creating key pedestrian focal points at either end of the building.
