Doheny Eye Institute Page | 1 ARDENT SEARCH COMPANY HISTORICAL OVERVIEW At age 69, Carrie Estelle Doheny lost the vision in her left eye to glaucoma, giving her a profound awareness of the precious and delicate nature of sight. In 1947, Mrs. Doheny created and funded the Doheny Eye Institute as a center where doctors would offer advanced treatment and scientists would carry out pioneering research to prevent, treat, and cure vision disorders. With an eye on the future, the Doheny Eye Institute and UCLA recently created a unique affiliation, becoming known for patient care as the Doheny Eye Center UCLA, with locations in Pasadena, Arcadia, and Orange County. The Doheny Eye Institute proper remains the research center and home of top entrepreneurial enterprises, including the largest reading center in the United States, Doheny Image Reading Center, known as DIRC. Doheny Eye Institute Page | 2 ARDENT SEARCH COMPANY ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE The Doheny Eye Institute (DEI) culture strives for excellence and Marissa Goldberg, Executive Director, sets the example. Marissa has been devotedly hands-on since 1991 to ensure DEI’s stabilization and continued growth. She serves as the strategic, day-to-day leader, CFO, and board member, to make DEI’s mission scalable and implement the fundamental vision. Marissa is described by the team as collaborative, effective at casting vision and desiring to release competent people to do their jobs with a sense of empowerment; “she is the type of boss that will help you to be successful.” There is a strong element of being “on mission” with a spirit of gratitude, anticipation and excitement based on the impact development is having on changed lives. The staff recognizes that DEI is an entrepreneurial (requiring a level of independence), invigorating, inspiring and unique workplace that provides an environment of professionalism, passion, and potential. This is a hard-working, close-knit, and fervent group who are highly motivated, committed to the mission and purpose, and to carrying out their work with excellence. The DEI team works to build a culture of being a unified and integrated unit motivated to innovate and improve while delivering strong performance. Part of the staff health is due to the value placed on open discussions and sharing of honest opinions. People feel free to talk to each other about problems and areas for improvement. Challenging ideas are perceived as positive. The team is welcome to give input to decisions, and their input is sincerely considered. This is a culture of “all hands helping.” Leadership, while operating within a highly collaborative team, is encouraged to work independently with minimal direction. This is not a political environment. Great care is taken to assure that team members treat each other with dignity, respect and foster a healthy relational climate. As a result, the group consistently works on being transparent, open, and creating a climate of trust. This is a position for a team player. Each manager must value people as well as the process and be able to lead and earn respect of others. Even in the casual environment and management style, there is an underlying seriousness and purposefulness to accomplish the work. The office environment reflects an energized, participative, creative, informal, yet professional approach to making the organization successful. While getting the job done and being part of the thriving culture may prompt an industrious work ethic, leadership realizes the importance for having balance in their lives. The successful candidate will be hands-on, high energy, and self-starting. This person will be actionoriented and proactive while keeping a healthy balance in life.
