Lladró brightens
our dreams
“We want our works to have elegance,
to be expressive, to exude life, to have feelings.
We want them to reflect the good side of life,
the positive values of a human being,
all that which dignifies life.”
Juan Lladró and his daughters Rosa and Ángeles.

TIME TO
CELEBRATE
Slowly but surely 2013 is approaching its end and as with every fall, we are getting ready to bid it farewell. For us, this is
not just another year. Lladró has reached the age of sixty and is celebrating it by looking to the future, each day practicing the
complicated art of balancing tradition and innovation.
This creative concern is what makes us such a contemporary, modern brand, as one can readily see in the article that opens this
special issue of our magazine. The ability to re-invent ourselves is also the central axis of Juan Lladró’s personal vision of Little
harlequin, which now has a worthy successor in a version with a new decoration.
Meanwhile, our new introductions bring with them all the colors of the new season in the form of spectacular chandeliers from
the Belle de Nuit collection, a totally unique concept from the lighting sector that combines the warmth of porcelain with Lladró’s
striking palette of colors.
A fascination for the Orient is also on view in this launch, with new oriental lions and pieces inspired by Japanese traditions.
The wealth of Hindu spirituality is represented by Lakshman and Hanuman, which complete the scene of Rama Darbar, so highly
cherished in the cultural consciousness of India. Let us not forget that every Christmas Lladró fills our home with magic, thanks to
its lithophanes and ornaments, which come in surprising forms and decorations this year.
Lladró Universe reports on the excellent response to collections such as Belle de Nuit, the new pieces in The Guest by Lladró Atelier
collection, decorated by the American artist Gary Baseman, as well as special projects such as The Enchanted Garden and Dazzle.
As to be expected, we are sharing with you the first stops on the traveling exhibition 60 Years at the Vanguard of Porcelain, an
overview of our work that continues captivating the public on its tour through different countries. Whichever way you look at it,
it is time to celebrate.

The art of balancing
tradition and modernism
When one thinks of Lladró, of course one thinks of figurines,
but it can also bring to mind a lamp, a mirror, a vase, a tea set,
a lithophane or jewelry… After sixty years revolutionizing the
decorative arts with its superb control of sculpture, Lladró
continues re-inventing itself and opening up new lines,
especially within the functional side of home decor. This is
the sign of an eclectic and global brand, just like the world
we live in. Here, the main guides in this long-distance race,
Juan Lladró and his daughters Rosa and Ángeles, look towards
the future with enthusiasm and honesty, the principles that
have always underpinned The City of Porcelain.

C
reations that serve as inspiration for haute cuisine,
spectacular lamps that update classic crystal chandeliers,
simple unadorned matte sculptures, profusely decorated High
Porcelain pieces or characters like The Guest, as surprising as it is
modern… a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since that
distant Sad Harlequin, but if there is one thing that has always
remained unchanged throughout the brand’s 60 years then that
is its audacity, and its drive to keep on evolving. In this regard,
the stylized forms of the Lladró pieces from the 1970s were as
innovative then as this Guest, the character coming from Lladró
Atelier, the brand's laboratory of ideas.
BANKING ON INNOVATION
Ever since it was first set up, Lladró has always had a pioneering outlook.
The first signs could be seen in its lamps from the 1960s, the vases from
the 70s or the monochrome sculptures of the 80s which are on view
in the touring exhibition “60 Years at the Vanguard of Porcelain”, with
which the brand is celebrating its 60th anniversary. There is no denying
that ever since the beginning, Lladró porcelain has taken any opportunity to leave the display case and become part and parcel of our
everyday lives.
The same goes for the present day, in which the pure design of the
Lladró Atelier collections sits side by side with the complex sculptures in
High Porcelain, the brand’s maximum artistic category, in a fine balance
between tradition and modernism that the company has always
pursued. As its President Rosa Lladró claims, “we have never stopped
renewing ourselves and that is true now more than ever. It is absolutely
crucial for a creative company like ours because we depend on this

quest for new ideas. What we are today
is the fruit of constant evolution, of our
ability to continually reinvent ourselves.”
This evolution involves changing forms
but also colors too, with an updated spectrum of colors that is the result of ongoing
laboratory research by Lladró chemists.
Yet if there is one thing that defines
the current era then that is a strong
focus on functional lines for home decor.
Lladró intensifies its creativity in l’art de la
table with its Naturofantastic collection,
an attractive compromise between the
useful and the beautiful; or in the lighting
sector, with the new Belle de Nuit collection which we are presenting in this issue.
This focus on innovation dovetails with
the brand’s vision. As Rosa says, “we don’t
try to second guess our customers nor
follow market studies. Instead we use our
educated intuition and imagine the next
step in the story and lead our artists in
that direction.”
PROXIMITY AND HONESTY
Within this process of adaptation, Lladró
interacts with its customers, speaks
with them and listens to their preferences. In this sense, during many trips in
which they represent the brand, both the
members of the Lladró family as well as
the sculptors have seen how, independently of the country and the culture, its
customers appreciate the fact that Lladró
is an honest high quality product. That’s
why, despite its international reach, Lladró
has never stopped being a family-run
enterprise. It is a global company, but at
the same time it remains a small creative
studio.
Lladró’s leading position in new markets
has seen a parallel growth in numbers of
pieces inspired by other cultures, which sit
easily alongside the brand’s core themes.
As Ángeles Lladró, the company VicePresident, points out, “everything coexists peacefully as it always has, just that
now a greater awareness of other cultures
has inspired us to create pieces based on
respect for local traditions. Both for my
family and for our sculptors, it is a true
pleasure to engage with the customs of
each particular place, because it is highly
rewarding and makes us learn and grow.”
When asking Ángeles what is the one
thing she would keep unchanged, she
makes no hesitation: “besides continuing
to focus on the most positive outlook on
life, I would say our tradition, our way of
making the pieces with our techniques
and our porcelain, everything that forms
part of the company’s DNA. At once, I
would keep on extending our know-how
to new product ranges, but of course
handcrafted, as always, in Valencia to our
exacting standards of quality.”
IN THE BEST HANDS
The uniqueness of Lladró that Ángeles
speaks of is already there in the very
beginning of the pieces, in the very creative process. Because at Lladró everything
is made by hand and, furthermore, everything is done at The City of Porcelain, the
brand’s one and only factory, something
not many companies can boast of today.
With all the experience afforded by his
years at the forefront of the company, Juan
Lladró is clear about the main reasons for
its success: “we have the best team of
porcelain artists in the world. Sculptors,
designers, decorators, painters, master
firers… and we work side by side with
them from the first sketches all the way
through to the firing of the piece in the
kiln.” At the same time, Lladró continues
collaborating with creatives of the stature
of Jaime Hayon and Gary Baseman, in a
mutually enriching experience that has
already produced such wonderful fruit.
Finally, we asked the three what was
Lladró’s place in 21st century homes. The
answer is unanimous: “in all homes and in
all eras there is always a place for beauty,
for memories, for what makes you feel
good, for those creations that add a touch
of style to our everyday surroundings and,
at once, live with us almost like an extension of our way of understanding life.”

The Belle de Nuit collection is a winning combination of the warmth of porcelain with
a variety of bright cheerful colors. This series of hanging, wall and tabletop lamps
comes in different sizes, with a special nod to the spectacular ceiling lamps which
update the classic crystal chandelier in a new language style. Instead of glass, we now
have porcelain, thus opening up a host of new decorative possibilities, while the usual
fabric lampshades are replaced by lithophanes, whose evocative etchings become
visible when lit. Lladró porcelain shines with a light of its own in this unique collection.

B
elle de Nuit is a plant, but not just any plant. During the
night, its leaves seem to reflect the moonlight and take
on the magical quality of shining in the dark. And this
is where the name of this species comes from, beauty of the
night. Among its many curious properties is the fact that
the same plant can have flowers with different colors or that
one flower can be speckled with various colors. As the plant
matures, its flowers gradually change color and a yellow flower
becomes an intense pink while a white flower can turn violet.
Only a plant like this could have inspired a unique collection
like Belle de Nuit. This is a series of lamps in different sizes and
colors. The most spectacular model, the ceiling lamp, is available in several versions, updating classic crystal chandeliers
not only in terms of the materials used but also in the expressive styling.
The sensation these lamps transmit, in comparison with those
made in other materials, is undoubtedly the greater sense of
warmth, which is further enhanced in some models with the
use of lithophane lampshades. When lit, the transparency of
the porcelain allows the designs etched on the surface of the
lithophanes to become visible, creating a subtle lighting with
a very evocative effect.
It is precisely the use of porcelain that opens up the doors to
the splendid variety of Lladró’s palette, and gives color such a
key role in the Belle de Nuit collection. Ranging from the simplest model in white to a fun multicolor version, Lladró offers
lots of different options in bright colors, as well as combinations of white and gold, or grey and emerald green, plus soft
gradated tones in blue and pink.
When looking at them, these unique lamps might remind
us of a castle’s chandelier, or maybe a meringue tart, as well
as something very pure and restful, perfect for decorating
a child’s bedroom. The personal, ambiguous and versatile
appearance of these lamps enables them to fit in with elegant or cheerful, sober or bright, youthful decorative styles.
An explosion of light and color, with an original and thoroughly contemporary design, they make our favorite rooms
warm and inviting.

eternal Lladró
EMOTIONS THAT LAST
Some pieces masterfully combine that special blend of sensitivity and
creativity that makes them eternal Lladrós. That is the case, for instance,
of Little Harlequin, whose elegant silhouette and sweet expression
embody the humane quality that has always defined Lladró works. It
is what Juan Lladró has called "a golden fruit in the company’s history".
A source of pride for its track record that now finds a fitting successor
in a new version with an original decoration.
Juan Lladró
T
he ability to arouse emotions
is only within the reach of the
most sensitive minds and the
most skilled hands. It is something
achieved by the artists who breathed
life into Little Harlequin in 1972. This
is beyond all doubt, for the piece
has remained in the company’s catalogue for almost thirty years. Now,
after sixty years at the vanguard of
porcelain, Lladró’s artists continue to
experiment with forms and colors to
give new life to pieces that update
its core subject matters yet maintain
the same power to move us as their
predecessors.
As Juan Lladró claims, “now that
we are celebrating our 60th Anniversary, we are taking a look backwards in order to move forward and
evoke the pleasurable experiences
that pieces like this Little Harlequin
brought to us". It is in that sense that
the piece ranks among the type of
creations he defines as “a whim or
fancy and also a source of pride in
our creation, which awakens a desire
to repeat our history.”
That very same feeling is what this
new version of the tender-hearted,
10 · EXPRESSIONS
melancholic harlequin arouses in us.
He is perhaps the most famous character from Commedia dell’arte, the
popular theatre from 17th century
Italy. Absentmindedly stroking the
cat on his lap, this little harlequin
warms our heart just as the original
model did, while adding an absolutely contemporary freshness and
lighthearted coloring. As the eldest of
the three founding brothers explains,
“this new harlequin produces a sense
of nostalgia for the past while at once
projecting us towards the future.”
Because Lladró is reinventing itself,
and the result is even better. This is
true from an artistic viewpoint, thanks
to the excellent decoration work in
the rhomboids of the costume, and
the experience needed to paint the
black lines in between them, especially when a steady hand is the only
aid. Also from the viewpoint of emotion, because, in Juan Lladró’s own
words, “the charming, sweet and, you
could almost say, innocent little harlequin represents the highest peak
of the expression of life and of the
humanism we always wanted for our
creations.”
In other words, this new piece stands
for all the things Lladró wished to
embody throughout its sixty years of
history: beauty, sensibility, and creativity. This set of values transcends
cold mechanical production and is
still as alive as ever in the workshops
of The City of Porcelain.

LUXURY, MYSTERY
AND FANTASY
A perfect blend of the aristocratic finesse of European culture and Oriental opulence, the spirit of the
Carnival of Venice is the source of inspiration behind a truly ambitious creation featuring exuberant
floral ornamentation.
W
hile all over the world carnival is synonymous with
partying, dancing and fun, in Venice it also stands for
refinement and sophistication. This festival has become one
of the most universal signs of identity for the city of canals,
recreating the ambience of the 17th and 18th century when
European nobility joined in the fun behind the anonymity
of intricate masks and sumptuous fancy dress. Lladró artists
have recreated all the mystery, luxury and exoticism of the
Carnival of Venice in this spectacular High Porcelain sculpture. Venetian fantasy boasts a wealth of ornamental detail,
especially visible in the headdress won by the enigmatic
character. Hibiscus, roses, water lilies… the talent of the artists at the City of Porcelain in flower-making reaches new
heights, making this composition one of the most outstanding in the Lladró catalogue.
As in all Lladró creations, each petal and each delicate little
stamen is finely modeled and set by hand, ensuring that each
piece is unique and unrepeatable. Matching the complexity
of the floral decoration, the character’s mask and costume
possess the same level of preciosity and meticulous taste for
detail in the finish, rendered in a combination of decorative
techniques. Enamels, liquid colors, paint paste and touches of
golden and pearly luster all add to the piece’s fantasy quality.
The wide spectrum of tonalities is further enriched with contrasting textures: matte for the more natural parts, the flowers
and face; and glaze for the sumptuous fabrics and the mask.
Venetian fantasy is an ambitious creation, conceived as a centerpiece to be the absolute focal point of any space. It is to be
admired unhurriedly from all angles and quietly enjoyed by
the most demanding lovers of beauty.

hese majestic and impressive Oriental Lions, symbols of power and good luck in oriental philosophy, are now available in a smaller
size to safeguard all homes. They come with an original decoration envisioned by the creative imaginations of the Lladró artists.
Inspired by the iron or granite bronze statues that were used to flank the entrances to palaces, temples and mansions, Lladró has
embellished these protective creatures with a highly refined decoration. In addition to the ornamentation of the breastplates, armor,
manes and tails, there are spectacular shades such as the special green color that brings to mind celadon, which gives the sacred
stone of jade its unique coloring. At the same time, the nobility and dignity of these lions is underscored by the use of golden luster
in the armor, using a manual polishing process to give it an aged effect that accentuates the overall air of antiquity.

LIGHTS UP CHRISTMAS
The holiday season means family get-togethers and meeting up with old friends, so it is also a time when we want our home
to be especially warm and inviting. That’s why Lladró’s new issues include a number of pieces conceived to turn any corner of
the home into a celebration of Christmas.
Besides the must-have balls and bells, this year we also have other ornaments with new designs and decorations, particularly in
golden luster, which is also the core focus of the tree topper Cantata – Praying (Re-Deco). In addition, some of these ornaments
can be used all year round, such as the irresistible faces of the Guests, perfect for adding a fun-loving note to our favorite spot.
This Christmas the music is provided by Saxophone player Teddy bear and his porcelain instrument decorated in platinum luster.
The musical bear entertains us with the melody of The Pink Panther, by Henry Mancini. Both he and his companion, Ornament
Teddy bear, were made in collaboration with Steiff, the exclusive German teddy bear brand. Of course, the holidays would not
be the same without lights, which come in the form of lithophanes with magical effects that make the perfect gift. As always,
Lladró is here to light up Christmas.

THE RETURN OF THE SPIRIT OF INDIA
The new limited edition Lakshman and Hanuman arrives to join Rama and Sita,
completing the Rama Darbar, the four key characters in the cultural consciousness
of India. These creations transmit universal values and are gems in their own right.
T
he wealth of Hindu iconography makes a welcome return to Lladró’s new issues. In doing so it
completes Rama Darbar, a fondly loved scene in the
cultural consciousness of India which represents the
ideal of the happy family.
According to the epic Ramayana, the Hindu
supreme god Vishnu was incarnated in the King
Rama to put an end to evil on Earth. His faithful and
beloved wife, Sita, accompanied him throughout his
whole life, which was plagued with many difficult
moments. The undying love between Rama and Sita
is now joined by the devotion of Lakshman, Rama’s
brother, and the loyalty of Hanuman, the monkey
god so highly venerated in oriental culture and considered an avatar of the god Shiva.
In the great Sanskrit epic attributed to the legendary
sage Valmiki, Lakshman symbolizes a man’s obligations to his elders and the value of selflessness; and
Hanuman is the protector of lovers and a symbol
of unswerving loyalty and courage. To understand
their profound meaning one has to explore the
philosophy of the sacred book. In it we will discover
34 · EXPRESSIONS
how Lakshman consoles Rama when he is despairing after Sita is kidnapped and he gives him the only
jewel he knows is hers, the ring on her toe, implying
that his eyes have never strayed beyond the feet of
his brother’s wife; or how Hanuman frees Sita from
captivity by defeating a whole army led by the evil
demon Ravana.
While the story in itself is highly dramatic, the profuse decoration of the limited editions is no less
impressive. The intense reds, oranges and blues,
new greens and purples or attractive yellows and
pinks pay tribute to the bright coloring of India.
In addition, we have the meticulous painstaking ornamentation which adds texture to the
ornate clothing and the attributes of the characters: the bow and arrows of Rama and his brother
Lakshman, the garlands of flowers, crowns, necklaces, bracelets and helmets. The decoration is
completed with the fine lines of the soft make-up
which highlights the facial features and accentuates the depth of their gazes that transmit a sense
of inner peace and equilibrium.

Gala dinner in Moscow
Events to celebrate Lladró's 60th anniversary are taking place all over
the world. One of the most noteworthy was held at the end of May in
the residence of the Spanish Ambassador in Russia, José Ignacio Carvajal,
with Rosa Lladró as special guest. The ambassador and his wife played
host to a select group of guests including politicians, entrepreneurs,
bankers, members of the media, the arts and culture and Russian high

her brother, the choreographer Andris Liepa, the TV presenter Ekaterina

Matador by Lladró, a limited
edition of 250 pieces.
Last March, Matador, the spectacular new Lladró bullfighting piece, won the applause of the guests
attending the presentation at the brand’s boutique in Valencia. In an event carefully decorated for the
occasion and focused on Spain’s famous spectacle, Ángeles Lladró gave him his alternativa, the special
ceremony when a bullfighter becomes a fully-fledged matador. The event was attended by representatives
from Valencia’s Bullfighting Museum and from the Bullfighting School of Valencia. Javier Malavia, sculptor
of the piece, explained the details of his creation, which excels for its faithful depiction of the bullfighter
in action as he holds the cape for the time-honored veronica pass, and also for its meticulous recreation
of the complex decoration of the matador’s costume, known as traje de luces or “suit of lights”. The
profusion of embroidery was successfully replicated thanks to the meticulous work using the complex
luster technique, while the silk fabric is reproduced with special tones from the Lladró palette.

ideas. Premiered at the beginning of the year at the Maison

aesthetic paths offers a radically different vision of pieces in
the Lladró catalogue.
Through the use of a strong contrast of black and white
and intersecting lines, the pieces are charged with great
energy and a surprising capacity to express sensations. This
striking aesthetic effect is based on a vanguard camouflage
technique developed by British artists during the First World
War. It was then adopted by painting, design and fashion
of the time, foreshadowing what would later be called
Kinetic art, Pop art and even Minimalism. In these creations
geometry plays with our perception using a technique
initially developed for camouflage purposes but which, when
applied to Lladró pieces, produces remarkable decorative
effects. This ambitious project with a highly-defined
personality of its own is open to new additions which are
sure to keep on surprising us.

The US welcomes
Gary Baseman’s new Guest
Last spring the Lladró boutiques in New York and
Los Angeles welcomed a very special guest. The
multi-faceted Californian artist Gary Baseman
arrived with his pair of Guests to further enrich
the Lladró Atelier collection with his personal,
creative universe. Coinciding with Design Week in
New York, Baseman received an enthusiastic welcome at the brand’s store in the Big Apple from
over 150 people, anxious to catch a glimpse of the new pieces and to listen first hand to
the artist talking about the inspiration for his designs. The boutique was decorated especially for the occasion with wallpaper created by the artist himself. Baseman explained
the symbolism of his Guests in a fascinating conversation with Dan Rubinstein, Chief
Editor of the celebrated Surface magazine. As he pointed out, he “tried to come up with
a figure that, like most of my creative work, would allow people to identify with it, to feel
involved; what I wanted was for people to desire it as part of their lives.” Heavily inspired
by Baseman’s signature symbols and themes of self love, acceptance and celebration,
these pieces are, as the artist claims, “like a bunch of flowers to celebrate something, to
be arranged on a table and interact with the surrounding environs.” After the conversation there was an entertaining cocktail party with music provided by a DJ which went
on well into the night, when the final guests left, but not without taking away with them
an original poster with a drawing of the big Guest which Gary Baseman produced during
the creative process for the piece.
Over a hundred fans also attended the event in Los Angeles, including well-known faces
like the famous artist and musician Moby and personalities such as the General Consul
of Spain, Enrique Ruiz Molero, and the Tourism Attaché at the Spanish Embassy, Javier
Piñanes. The presentation of the new Guests took place at the Boutique in Beverly Hills
within the overall framework of Dwell on Design, the USA’s most important design fair on
the West Coast, in which Lladró took part for the second year running. On this occasion,
the conversation with the artist was held with the fair’s Editorial Director, Erika Heet, who
asked him about some meaningful details of the pieces. As Baseman says, “these characters speak about accepting who we are, about freedom as a driving force for personal
growth and love, both for oneself and for others”. A message which weds perfectly with
the values of Lladró’s work.

at 28 May Street, in the heart of the city center, the store opened in June
with a special program including this exhibition on the brand’s history
which is currently touring the world. Two models dressed as the ladies in
the pieces Beautiful Gloria and Sweet Victoria welcomed guests with flowers. Once inside, attendants were also treated to cocktails in a pleasant,
relaxed atmosphere. This double celebration for Lladró’s best collectors in
Azerbaijan was topped off with the presentation of figurines to the winners
of the Mother’s Day competition held on March 8th.
India and Lladró, a mutual fascination
Lladró artists' special fascination with India's rich iconography can be
seen with each new launch. But judging by the response to its new issues
for Spring at Elle Decor India Design Show and Vogue Wedding Show, both
in New Delhi, the attraction is mutual. India's leading design and decor fair
took place in February and was the chosen setting for the presentation
of the figurines Sai Baba and Bal Gopal, alongside a selection of signature
pieces covering the spectrum of Lladró's styles. The spiritual leader and
the image of Lord Krishna as a child were also part of the selection Lladró

industry’s attention with the new proposals from Lladró Atelier, particularly
the Dazzle collection and the new Guests designed by the American artist
Gary Baseman. The big hit at Ambiente, the trade fair in Frankfurt in February,
were the lighting fixtures collections and the multicolor version of Naturofantastic. Later, at Euroluce, the International Lighting Exhibition of Milan in

April, Lladró presented the groundbreaking Belle de Nuit collection featured
in these pages. At Baselworld, the prestigious World Watch and Jewelry Show
held in Basel, also in April, we presented our latest High Porcelain introductions as well as The Enchanted Garden collection, also featured in this issue.
Other major events included ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture
Fair) in New York and the JCK jewelry event in Las Vegas, both in May. In June
we exhibited for the first time at the Dallas Design FINDS, with a selection
of lighting and home decor products. To bring the first half of the year to a
close, we were also at Dwell on Design, in Los Angeles, the most important
design fair on the West Coast of the U.S., where Gary Baseman’s new Guests
and the originality of the Dazzle pieces caused quite a stir among visitors.

Sagemon, the art of good luck omens
For over two centuries now, whenever a baby is born in the Japanese
region of Yanagawa, families and friends make sagemons, which are fun
colorful mobiles. Made to wish the newborn good luck, they are hung
over the altar where the classic Japanese Hina Dolls are placed. In February the boutique in the Lladró Museum organized a workshop led by a
team of experts in this traditional art. Over 130 people, including adults
and children, had a wonderful time decorating the sagemon with multicolor fabrics and practicing origami. Ángeles Lladró, her husband and
children did not miss the chance to discover this beautiful tradition on a
Saturday morning which also included a tasting of sushi and an exhibition
of Japanese customs and folklore.

A hectic social agenda at
The City of Porcelain
Throughout the first half of the year, The City of Porcelain and the Lladró Boutique in Valencia hosted many
social events. The activities got underway in February with
the visit of the famous journalist Andrés Aberasturi and
his family, who toured the museum and the workshops
in the company of Rosa and Ángeles Lladró. In March,
the ambassadors in Spain from several European Union
countries paid an official visit to Valencia, and made the
most of the opportunity to witness a flower-making demo
at the Lladró Boutique in the company of Juan Lladró
and his wife.
Furthermore, Lladró was featured in a program on Valencia
recently broadcast by the Japanese channel TV Tokyo. This
national TV station chose The City of Porcelain as one of
Valencia’s must-visits, and the program’s crew, led by the
presenter, the famous actress Chikako Kaku, paid us a visit.
In April, we welcomed the Representative of the Taipei
Economic and Cultural Office in Spain, Javier Ching-shan
Hou, and his wife. Also in April, approximately eighty bikers
rode their imposing Goldwing motorbikes to The City of
Porcelain, where they were welcomed by Juan Lladró and
his daughter Ángeles. The visit was part of the program of
their annual outing, this year held in Valencia.
In May, we were visited by a group of 200 interior designers
and architects taking part at the HI DESIGN EMEA conference. They were particularly interested in Lladró’s latest
projects in the field of lighting and interior designs, like
the Belle de Nuit lamp collection.

FAIRYTALES are much more than
stories told to entertain little children.
They are very often a good illustration
of popular wisdom. The tale by the
Brothers Grimm, in which a group of
animals abandoned by their owners,
and manage to overcome adversity
by joining forces, is a wonderful
example of cooperation, friendship
and courage.
The final scene in which the four
animals sing in unison, standing on
each other’s backs in a remarkable
pyramid, showcases Lladró artists’
master y in resolving a dif f icult
comp osition with a display of
technical dexterity and balance.
The charming scene is enhanced by
the cheerful range of colors used to
decorate the four characters.
With this piece, the tenth in the Classic
Children’s Tales collection, the town
musicians of Bremen will forever sing
their hymn to friendship.

The colors of Mexico
Pepita and Pedro, one of the best-loved couples in Lladró’s gres
catalogue, now have their counterparts in glazed porcelain. Thanks
to the use of highly saturated colors in the decoration, these two
Mexican children retain all their charm and joy with the new finish.
Lladró lends great importance to themes borrowed from different
cultures around the world. When the artists at The City of Porcelain
take on a piece with these subject matters, they first thoroughly
educate themselves in order to remain true to the spirit of the original tradition from which they are taken. In the case of Mexico, the
highly defined personality of its popular culture, a fascinating mix
of Spanish and indigenous roots, is known for its strong intense
coloring, as we can see in Pepita and Pedro with their traditional
ponchos and sombreros. Continuously expanded with new colors
developed especially by our technicians, the Lladró palette has
enabled the Mexican sun to shine in all its glory over this lovable pair.

Lladró flowers enjoy well-deserved
fame among lovers of art porcelain for their
perfection and for the skill and precision with
which they are made, completely by hand.
Preciosity, dexterity and attention to detail
make each flower a little work of art. In The
Enchanted Garden collection, Lladró takes
a step further by transporting these values
to the realm of jewelry. The most beautiful
Lladró flowers, remarkable for the delicacy
and transparency of the petals, are now
enhanced with precious stones and metals
to produce creations that are as elegant as
they are stunning.
Making the large flowers in this collection
is particularly complex because each petal
is made from a single piece of porcelain so
fine that only the most expert craftsmen are
able to successfully model them. Among the
precious stones decorating these pieces are
sapphires, rubelittes, amethysts, rutile quartz,
diamonds, emeralds, fire opals and peridots.
In addition the pistils and stems are made in
gold-plated silver.
These jewels of nature are pampered in every
way, presented on a velvet cushion under a
protective glass cover, a knowing nod to the
romantic story of Beauty and the Beast.
