Our focus on quality has earned us a reputation as a world-class manufacturer of precision optical products and solutions supporting a wide array of market applications. FLIR’s Precision Optics group manufactures components for sensing and imaging systems, bore-sight alignment and targeting, warning systems and satellite imagery. As a leading supplier of a variety of components such as infrared lenses, windows and filters, passive and illuminated reticles, and metalized optics, our continuous innovation and investment in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment helps to ensure a competitive advantage capability, as well as superior service to customers. FLIR Precision Optics is meticulous in the design and deposition of thin-film coatings that enable us to manufacture optics across a broad spectral range, covering the ultraviolet (UV) to long-wave infrared (IR) bands. A multitude of technical capabilities coupled with a highly-skilled technical staff are what make FLIR Precision Optics a recognized leader in optical component technology for many unique and custom applications. As an AS9100-certified company, you are guaranteed our products will conform to the most stringent military and aerospace standards. Our customers are confident in FLIR’s commitment to deliver solutions for the most difficult engineering problems. 1 With a broad range of fabrication and metrology equipment, FLIR is able to maintain extremely tight tolerances and specifications in order to meet the aggressive needs of our customers. We are committed to providing the highest level of capability possible in order to keep pace with the ever-changing technological needs of the optics industry. FLIR Precision Optics has established itself as a merchant supplier of high-quality optics to a variety of industries, and is also a vertically-integrated manufacturer of precision optics supporting applications throughout FLIR Systems. Depending on the required surface figuring and finish quality, FLIR has the capability of diamond turning (aspheric surfaces), conventional spindle polishing (spherical surfaces), as well as continuous polishers (CP), and double-side polishing (DSP) for optical flats and windows. Where ultra-high accuracy is needed in figuring, most IR materials can be finished using our QED MRF (Magneto-Rheological Finishing) system, enabling figure errors less than /10. Customer Service Solutions The quality and customer satisfaction provided by FLIR Precision Optics is a credit to our team. Every FLIR employee is highly skilled and takes pride in the production and manufacturing of the products we produce. Years of experience enables our engineers, scientists and technicians to be creative and break from conventional approaches when needed. Attention to detail allows our employees to get the most efficient and effective results from our advanced optical processing and figuring equipment. We are differentiated from our competitors by the collective skill level, manufacturing equipment, and industry knowledge within our team. OPTICAL FABRICATION HOW WE DO IT Fabrication Excellence RETICLES DIAMOND TURNING Fine Line-Width Photolithography As a specialty of FLIR Precision Optics, Etch-and-Fill reticles can achieve line-widths ranging from 4um to 400um can be reproduced on a variety of substrates and geometries. Dielectric reticles involve state-of-the-art combination of reticle and vacuum coating techniques. These reticles can either be bright or dark-field when combined with our AR coatings and/or electronic circuitry. The reflection and transmission characteristics of these reticles are custom designed for each product. Such designs can include a partial-patterning with Tin Oxide while other features may be AR-/HR- coated, or spectrally filtered. Reticle patterns can be on a single side or both sides of the optical components. Capabilities allow FLIR Precision Optics to create precision patterns on curved surfaces and provide optically aligned cemented reticle assemblies. Precision Turned Optics Ultra-high precision CNC (computer numerical controlled) lathe platforms, using natural and synthetic diamond cutting tools, allows FLIR Precision Optics to produce complex (aspheric) surface figures that are too difficult to accomplish using other techniques. Toroidal, aspheric, binary, parabolic, and ellipsoidal surfaces are all manufacturable with our state-of-the-art diamond turning capability. We are able to support a wide variety of materials, including: Zinc Selenide, Zinc Sulfide, Silicon, Germanium, Calcium Fluoride and non-ferrous metals. These types of materials require sub-micron accuracies that are easily achieved with diamondturning. Dependent upon material, surface roughness below 20 angstroms RMS is attainable, with typical surface figure error better than /10 (peak-to-valley) at .6328um. Solderable Edge Metallization FLIR Precision Optics solderable edge metallization is a proprietary multi-layer metallic coating for hermetically sealing optical windows and filters. Metallization can be applied to both visible and IR windows, and can be bonded or soldered to enable a durable hermetic seal when needed in opto-mechanical systems. New Generation Surface Quality Standards Consistent with the latest generation of surface quality standards, FLIR produces the only Picatinny Arsenal approved surface quality standard per MIL-PRF 13830B, meeting the needs of today’s modern optical requirements. These new standards are designed with anodized aluminum housings for better durability and visibility. FLIR also offers recertification services required to keep the standards current. METROLOGY TESTING THIN-FILM COATINGS Visible Coatings With a variety of custom-tooled vacuum systems to meet a myriad of customer coating requirements, our engineering expertise can assist in the development and production of laser coatings, BBAR, AR, bandpass filters, notch filters, and EOCCM. Offering experience in the visual spectrum on a multitude of different glass materials, FLIR’s optical coating design capabilities make it possible to develop a coating that meets your exact spectral and surface durability requirements. Coating processes utilize ion-assist, such as Leybold’s Advanced Plasma Source, for low temperature depositions, enabling coatings with enhanced density and durability against severe environmental exposure. In-house machining capability enables the fabrication of any necessary tooling for prototype or production quantities. Quartz crystal and optical monitoring allows for in-situ film deposition monitoring and precise layer thickness control. Near-IR to Far Infrared Coatings State of the Art Metrology As an established leader in the development and manufacturing of infrared lenses and filters, FLIR’s optics supports commercial, aerospace, defense and medical applications. FLIR’s team of engineers design customized infrared coatings to meet precise optical specifications on a variety of substrates, including Germanium, Zinc Sulfide, Silicon, Gallium Arsenide, Sapphire and chalcogenides. This thorough engineering expertise can assist in the development and production of AR, bandpass filters, notch filters, and EOCCM designs. Enabled by Leybold’s Advanced Plasma Source technology, FLIR offers high-performing, durable coatings. In addition, FLIR has developed industryleading DLC (diamond like hard-carbon) coating for applications requiring extreme durability. With a complete line of metrology testing equipment, FLIR is able to manufacture lenses with required precision and accuracy and have the confidence to back up their work. This equipment includes Zygo XPHR, Taylor Hobson Form Talysurf and CCI, Precitech Servo-tool Measuring System, and a new QED Sub-Aperture Stitching Interferometer (SSI). By rotating and tilting an optic under test and taking data at given positions, an SSI allows several subapertures to be stitched into one large data set. This data set can be analyzed in the same fashion as any single interferometer reading. The SSI allows the following to be measured without other aids such as null lenses: hemispheres, aspheres, plano, concave and convex surfaces up to 200mm. The SSI automatically controls positioning and nulling in order to: • Acquire and stitch the data • Reduce errors due to ghost reflections • Measure surface figure and radius of curvature errors FLIR conducts both in-process production part testing and offers metrology services to anyone in the industry.
