2012 MFBF Equine Directory - Montana Farm Bureau Federation

502 S. 19th Ave., Suite 104
Bozeman, MT 59718
Dear fellow horse enthusiast:
I’m looking forward to 2012 being a fine year for horse owners. As a
quarter horse breeder myself, I’m looking forward to the new crop
of colts this spring. Hopefully Mother Nature provides us with lots of
rain to keep our grass green and growing. The economic outlook for
the industry is looking up due to recent legislation that returns viable
options for managing equine operations.
We’re proud of the Equine Boosters of MSU for yet again providing
a great sale in early May—their Top of the West sale featuring horses
from the MSU Colt Breaking Class. Remember that as part of this
sale, you support the Equine Boosters of MSU and the MSU Equine
Science Program. I personally know of at least two of our MFBF
members who have bought colts through the sale and they are very
pleased with the quality of their horses.
Of course the real value of this directory is letting horse enthusiasts
know that Montana Farm Bureau works daily to protect what’s near
and dear to horse owners: property rights, clean water and animal
care without overregulation. If you’re not a member, join today or
upgrade to a Century Club member and encourage all of your friends
with horses to do the same. We can’t do this without your support.

Meet MFBF Equine Committee Member
Milee Malone
Milee Malone loves horses and equine
competition. She was the 2011 Northern Rodeo
Association Champion Breakaway Roper and
qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo
three times. The 29-year-old co-manages
Paradise Equestrian Center in Pray and
currently serves on the Montana Farm Bureau
Federation (MFBF) Equine Committee. Milee, no
stranger to agriculture, has been riding horses all
her life and grew up in Park County.
Her mother, Gayleen, and father, Marty, have been advocates
of agriculture for most of their professional careers and have instilled those
values in Milee. Marty Malone recently retired as Montana State University
(MSU) Extension agent for Park County after 30 years to begin a new career as
county commissioner. Milee’s brother manages a ranch in the valley. The family
has been MFBF members since 2000.
Milee originally wanted to start a breeding barn after receiving her degree in
equine science, and still hopes to in the future. Milee is a professional trainer
specializing in roping, and co-managing the Center with Brooke Sene. The two
women have made the Center a premier training and boarding facility, working
together since 2008. When asked, “What is your number-one hint for all future
barn managers?” Milee responded, “Communication between coworkers,
employees and clients. Most problems can be resolved if people just talk.”
When she is not working at the Center, Milee is on the road with her mom
chasing the rodeo circuit. This past year, she and her 12 year old mare,
“Baybee” (who she raised and trained) won the Northern Rodeo Association
Champion Breakaway. The motivated rider hopes to do as well in the Women’s
Professional Rodeo Association and qualify for the National Finals Rodeo in the
future. Besides managing the facility with 50 horses and clients, a constant cycle
of six horses/clients in training, and winning national titles, Milee makes time to
promote the equine industry.
Milee has been a member of the Montana Farm Bureau Federation for six years
and served on the MFBF Equine Committee for two years. As a committee
member, Milee educates people on issues involved and ways they can be solved.
“I feel it’s important to not only talk to people involved with horses, as well
as those who know nothing about them, and let them know where equine
professionals stand on a number of issues, including property and water rights,
animal care, and environmental stewardship,” notes Milee.
26
She accomplishes this at the national level by serving on the American Farm
Bureau Federation’s Equine Committee. Milee’s input on these committees
allows the grassroots organization to vote and create policy concerning equine
issues. For more information on Farm Bureau visit www.mfbf.org.

Behind the Scenes at a Horse Sale
BLS horse sales manager Jann Parker shares her expertise
about selling and buying horses.
If you come to a sale to buy a horse, what
should you do first?
Homework starts at home. Your shopping should
begin before you ever get to the sale. First, decide
what you really want. Do you want a trail horse, rope
horse, gentle kid’s horse, ranch horse, or a combo? Knowing
what you want helps in finding the right horse for you. Keep yourself focused
and refuse to be distracted by horses that don’t “fit the bill.” Your “search”
begins when you weed through the consignments and form your “short list.” At
Billings Livestock, we update our webpage as horses come in, sometimes daily,
for this very reason – it allows our customers to keep any eye on consignments
from home and then call the consignor. Visit with them about the horse. Ask
questions. If the horse is in close proximity, go try the horse. Video is a big
help. We encourage videos, and many consignors send in links to a video on a
specific horse. If the horse is five states away, find out when they are coming to
BLS; many consignors come the day prior to the sale, and so should you. As our
time, resources, fuel, and pocketbook limit us, horse sales allow the buyer to
see a considerable number of horses that fit their requirements all in one place,
all in one weekend, and all offered for sale. Plan to make the horse sale your
destination for that weekend to find your horse. Attend the previews, walk by
the horses in their pens, watch what goes on and take a good look at what you
are planning to buy. Then, if it fits, do it.
Once you raise your hand and buy, what happens next?
Once you have purchased your new horse, go out and make sure he is fine in
his pen. At BLS, horses go back to the pens/stalls they came from to minimize
any issues. Make sure your new horse has hay, water, and all looks good. He
is now yours. If you have completed your buying, go to the office and settle up.
You will receive your registration papers, transfer, any other support material
at that time. In Montana, a brand inspection is proof of ownership. You will
receive your health certificate, negative
Coggins test papers and brand
inspection at the LOAD
OUT chute once
your horse is
36
checked out. Health and Coggins are
written in accordance with your state
requirements. If you live in Montana, you
will not need a health or Coggins.
If you want to sell your horse,
what to do?
If you want to sell your horse, make sure
you want to sell your horse. People
can tell a mile away if you are serious or
not and with every passing day, will not
spend their time, resources, and energy researching horses any further once
they get the “well, if he brings the big bucks, then maybe we’ll sell him”, or “If
he goes to the right place, then maybe we’ll sell him.” There are way too many
other horses out there that will sell and buyers will concentrate their efforts
on those horses. Ever notice why complete dispersion sales are well attended?
People know the horses will sell. Have him look, ride, and be at his/her best.
All shapes, sizes, classes, and conditions will sell, but if you want to do the best
job, have your horse ready to sell. Get him in shape and get shoes on at least
a week prior to the sale, and be generally “ready.” Styles change, too; with
ranch horses and using geldings, save the clippers and do not clip or trim ears,
fetlocks, or pull manes or tails. Honest.
What to expect of your horse in the ring and after the sale.
Rarely does a horse really act up in the sale ring UNLESS he/she has an
unresolved issue or two that came with him. Barn-soured horses show their
colors by “riding you” and sticking their head back out the gate they came in or
doing a dance to get back out the gate. The majority of the broke horses just
“ride nice.” I think people make the mistake of stopping to talk every other
lap around the sale ring and that makes the horse nervous to stand still. Keep
motion, show your horse. If you have catalogued your horse, the announcer
and auctioneer already have the information you submitted. You certainly can
add to it, but remember, the better job you do riding, the better your horse will
show, and that translates into the better your horse will sell. All in all, horses
are just fine in the sale arena.
At BLS, your success is our success. We want to do the best job we can for both our
buyers and sellers. We will help you – on either side of it – to market your horse
and to do our best job of selling your horse, and help those who are looking for a
“certain” horse do their research. We want a win-win. BLS is Montana’s oldest
market at 77 years of operation, and began as a horse and mule auction.
Today, we are proud to be America’s number-one horse market. It matters
to us. Come see Bill and Jann Parker and the staff at BLS Horse Sales.

Manure and Hay Matters
By Celine Duncan, DowAgroSciences
Noxious and invasive weeds can cause serious problems on rangeland and
pastures in Montana. Herbicides are a very effective tool for controlling these
weeds and helping protect Montana’s agricultural industry and the biological
diversity of its forests and wildlife. When noxious weeds are treated with
herbicides, forage from herbicide-treated pasture may be consumed by horses
and other livestock. These herbicides can pass through the animals’ digestive
tracts unchanged and are excreted in urine and manure. If manure, hay used
for bedding, mulch, or compost materials (e.g. grass clippings, manure, hay)
containing herbicide residues are applied to fields or gardens, herbicide damage
may occur to certain broadleaf vegetables, flowers or other sensitive crops.
If you buy hay for your animals, ask the hay producer or seller which herbicides,
if any, were used in producing the hay. Obtain a copy of the herbicide label from
a farmer or online (at www.cdms.net/LabelsMsds/LMDefault.aspx), and refer to
the Use Precautions and Restrictions section. If you do not know the herbicide
history of the hay, do not sell or give away the manure from animals that
consumed the hay for use in growing plants or making compost. Manures that
contain herbicide residues can be safely spread on grass pastures, rangelands,
grass hayfields, corn or grass grown for seed.
If you raise or purchase grass hay, make sure you know if any herbicides were
used on the hay prior to your possession. Producers and retailers of hay must
communicate that herbicide-treated forages and plant matter converted into
manure are not usable as a fertilizer, soil amendment or compost in areas
used for growing broadleaf plants. Landowners should know and maintain a
written record of the herbicides applied to their fields. Upon selling products of
herbicide treated inputs, sellers must inform purchasers of herbicide label use
precautions.
Remember, it is important to read and follow herbicide labels so land managers
and horse enthusiasts can appreciate how to use their manure and livestock
bedding in a manner that keeps it from damaging gardens and other sensitive
plants such as ornamentals. Additional information and guidelines for managing
herbicide carryover in manure, hay and other products is available online at
www.pesticides.montana.edu/PAT/Coordinators/non-target%20plant%20toxicity/
index.html or aminopyralidstewardshipinstructions.com or contact your local MSU
Extension agent to develop a manure management plan.
Note: Depending on the herbicide used, it
takes three-to-seven days feeding on nontreated forage for most animals’ digestive
tracts to produce manure clear of any
herbicide residue. Consult the appropriate
product label for specific information.

What Exactly is the Montana Farm
Bureau Federation?
You’re probably wondering what the Montana Farm Bureau Federation
(MFBF) is and what we can do for you. Lots. In short, MFBF cares for the
country and we can help ensure a stronger equine industry and save you
money.
Montana Farm Bureau Federation and American Farm Bureau Federation
(AFBF) were formed in 1919 for the purpose of making the business of farming
and ranching more profitable and your community a better place to live. MFBF
is an independent, non-governmental, voluntary organization with its roots
in agriculture. Farm Bureau is an organization where members secure the
benefits of united efforts in a way that could never be accomplished through
individual efforts. MFBF is the Montana’s largest agricultural organization.
MFBF is made up of over 18, 000 member families. Each November, volunteer
leaders nominate members for each of the fifteen commodity advisory
committees, including equine. In June, the committees meet to discuss issues
and propose ways to address those issues. This information is taken back to
the county Farm Bureaus. The county Farm Bureaus discuss resolutions to
be presented at the state convention. There, amendments and new policy is
voted on by members. This all goes into the policy book. This policy book
designates what the MFBF supports and disapproves. MFBF’s three lobbyists
use this policy to represent the 18, 000 member families in Helena. Workers’
compensation, horse processing, and private property rights are just some
of the issues. If national in scope, this policy is taken to the American Farm
Bureau Federation convention and MFBF members propose policy to put in the
AFBF policy book. These policies are voted on by state delegates nationwide
and is the voice of one of the most influential organizations in Washington, DC.
Besides Farm Bureau by making your one voice heard and helping protect the
industry you love, by becoming a member you receive benefits to help with
your home and business. Is your old truck starting to lose its luster? Check
out MFBF’s GM discount. Members now receive a $500 discount on each
qualifying Chevrolet, GMC or Buick vehicle they purchase or lease—that
includes all the trucks. Flying to a rodeo or show and can’t seem to find a good
deal on a hotel or rental car? Members receive a discount on Avis, or Thrifty
car rentals. Hotel rooms are cheaper at Choice Hotels and Wyndham Hotels.
So that’s what Montana Farm Bureau Federation is in a nutshell and what we
can do for you. If you’d like more information check out www.mfbf.org or
please do not hesitate to call us at (406) 587-3153.
