Jim Bickel (414)671R1212 jim.bickel@milwaukeesynod.org GOD IS GOOD Pastor Penvose forgot to say it. He always says it. He had welcomed the assembly of homeless men and women, others who were struggling with financial issues, some older church members who come for the fellowship, and the volunteers, all gathered Wednesday night at Unity’s Soup Kitchen. Pastor Penvose was about to deliver the meal prayer, but he had forgotten one thing. Since it had become a tradition, Pat, one of the homeless men at the tables, shouted it out, “God is good,” and Pat had to say it everyone in the gymnasium answered, “All the time.” Pat came back, “All the time,” and the guests with one voice answered, “God is good!” Pretty moving, coming from Pat, a quiet man with long hair and a full beard. He likes to say he has the “mountain man” look. A Viet Nam Veteran, Pat, over the years, has spent many nights outside without a place to call home. Pat loves to come to the Soup Kitchen, a meal served every Wednesday evening at Unity Lutheran Church, 1025 East Oklahoma, in Milwaukee. He says everyone is friendly and it feels like a family. In the midst of the people gathered at Unity to break bread together Pat had to say it. “God is good – all the time!” Pat is a reminder of the witness people in poverty can give to the rest of us, and why the ministries of Outreach for Hope are vital to the mission we share together in the Greater Milwaukee Synod to walk with the poor. Read more about the Unity Soup Kitchen in this issue of “Seeds of Hope.” OFH 2010 - No. 3:Layout 1 11/19/10 4:10 PM Page 2 IT ’ S M U C H M O R E T H A N T H E “ S O U P ” AT U N I T Y ’ S more than one church “You felt welcomed,” he recalled. The S O U P K I TC H E N Much The Soup Kitchen started seven years next week he was back again. He atR “Unity ’s Soup Kitchen is the pulse, the driving beat of our congregation. It’s how we think and see our work in this community.” That’s the way Kevan Penvose, Pastor of Unity Lutheran Church describes their Soup Kitchen. The Soup Kitchen is a meal program served every Wednesday evening to anyone who needs not only a meal, but a place to feel welcomed and valued. Unity is located in southR east Milwaukee and an Outreach for Hope congregation of the Greater Milwaukee Synod. Much more than a Meal Through the years the Soup Kitchen has become so much more than a meal freely served to the community. It includes the Open Door Free Clinic and a Clothing Room, both operating on Wednesday evenings. There is also a Food Pantry that gives food out especially to those without a zip code. That’s significant since many food programs ask for an ID and an address. But for many that are homeless there is no official address to share. As George, one of the guests, explained, “I don’t have an address. I’ve been living under the IR94 bridge.” ago as an idea in Unity ’s Outreach Committee. “It was like God was leadR ing us,” said Karen Emmons, who was on Unity ’s Outreach Committee at the time and has served as the Soup Kitchen’s Director/Coordinator ever since. Besides the various additional ministries that grew up out of and along side of the Soup Kitchen, a key to its outreach has been the ecumenical involveR ment of four other churches that take turns, along with Unity, in preparing and serving the meals. They include St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cudahy, St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Milwaukee, Nativity Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, one block from Unity. It’s a joint effort, but Unity is the site and the organizing church that brings it all together. Much more than survival The effects of the Soup Kitchen reach far beyond Wednesday night. One of the regular guests at the meal is Jim. At his first visit several years ago he liked the way people sat down before the meal and could visit. George, Jim, John, Pat, and Diane Karen Emmons Soup Kitchen Director Outreach for Hope, Inc. Jim got connected 2 tended the 6:30 PM worship and communion service up in the chapel that follows the meal program each week. Three months later he joined Unity. He was connected. His experiR ence at Unity spurred him on to work towards change in the community. He is part of the Greater Milwaukee Synod’s Racism Committee. He has also been working with a program attempting to develop temporary shelR ter in the area for the homeless. The program is called GIFTS (God Is Faithful Temporary Shelter). Jim has worked off and on, but steady employment proves to be elusive. In the meantime Jim uses his talents to be a blessing to others with similar needs, inspired by Unity, the church that has become his own. Much more than Sunday morning At the close of Unity’s worship each Sunday, a voice calls out to the whole congregation, “God is good,” and the people of Unity respond, “All the time!” And the refrain reverses, “All the time,” “God is good.” “It’s our connection to ministry all week,” says Pastor Penvose. “The link is made when the meal starts on Wednesday evening, and I announce, ‘God is good’ and the guests reply with enthusiasm, ‘All the time.’” Much more than a donation Your financial support to Outreach for Hope goes directly to ministries like Unity’s Soup kitchen. It is your response to the proclamation, “God is good – all the time!” All the time – God is good!” www.outreachforhope.org T H E 2010 O U T R E A C H A ND MIN ISTRIES FOR H O P E C H U RC H E S M I LW A U K E E - F A R N O R T H Capitol Drive Lutheran Church KENOSH A Grace Lutheran Church 5229 West Capitol Drive ~ Milwaukee 2006 60th Street ~ Kenosha Divine Word Lutheran Church ELCA Urban Outreach Center 5505 South Lloyd Street ~ Milwaukee 2006 60th Street ~ Kenosha Florist Avenue Lutheran Church RACIN E Emmaus Lutheran Church 5975 North 40th Street ~ Milwaukee Good Shepherd Lutheran Church 3617 North 48th Street ~ Milwaukee Peace Lutheran Church 5229 North 51st Blvd. ~ Milwaukee 1925 Summit Avenue ~ Racine Racine Neighborhood Camp 1925 Summit Avenue ~ Racine Our Savior ’s Lutheran Church M I LW A U K E E - N E A R N O R T H All Peoples Church 2219 Washington Avenue ~ Racine 2600 North Second Street ~ Milwaukee 2417 Drexel Avenue ~ Racine Redeemer Lutheran Church Emmaus Lutheran, Racine Cross Lutheran Church 1821 North 16th Street ~ Milwaukee Hephatha Lutheran Church 1720 West Locust Street ~ Milwaukee Incarnation Lutheran Church 1510 West Keefe Avenue ~ Milwaukee Reformation Lutheran Church 2201 North 35th Street ~ Milwaukee Serenity Inns 2825 West Brown ~ Milwaukee M I LW A U K E E - C E N T R A L A N D S O U T H Lutheran Church of the Great Spirit 3127 South Howell Avenue ~ Milwaukee ELCA Urban Outreach Center, Kenosha Our Saviors Lutheran Church 3022 West Wisconsin Avenue ~ Milwaukee St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Lao Ministry 2812 West Wisconsin Avenue ~ Milwaukee Faith/Santa Fe Lutheran Church 1000 South Layton Boulevard ~ Milwaukee Unity Lutheran Church 1025 East Oklahoma Aveune ~ Milwaukee Redeemer Lutheran Church 631 North 19th Street ~ Milwaukee All Peoples Church, Milwaukee Outreach for Hope, Inc. 7 www.outreachforhope.org OFH 2010 - No. 3:Layout 1 11/19/10 4:11 PM Page 3 FA M I LY B I K E R I D E M E E TS A L L I TS G OA LS Bells ringing, flags waving and enthusiastic cheering greeted each of the riders as they crossed the finish line at Cory Park in Dousman on September 11, site of the OFH Family Bike Ride and Fund Raiser. A hearty twentyRnine bikers rode up to 40 miles, many rode 14, and some were happy to make it 4 miles. No matter what the distance, celebration was in order. The third annual Family Bike Ride for fun and fundraising had been a success. It was the first year that the event was promoted throughout the Greater Milwaukee Synod, and people from across the Synod came through with their support. Our $50,000 goal was exceeded by over $9000. J i m B i c k e l One morning I heard a voice out in the reception area of the Synod Office asking, “Where is Pastor Bickel?” I don’t often experience that in my new roll as Director of Outreach for Hope, so I stepped out to see who my visitor was. It was Larry. His pastor, Rev. Donna Brown at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 26th and Wisconsin, had brought him to the September 11 Outreach for Hope Family Bike Ride. This morning Larry had something for me, tightly wadded up in his hand. After some hesitation he opened his hand and carefully unfolded a $10 bill and a $5 bill. As I looked on in curiosity he handed me the crumpled bills, “Here, this is for the bike ride. I need to mark it on my sheet.” The sheet Larry was referring to was his Outreach for Hope pledge form, a sheet that he had more than filled. The Pastor Jerbi family train Corporate Sponsors: Thrivent – Milwaukee chapter Thrivent – SE Waukesha County chapter Bicycle Doctors – Dousman Culvers on Sunset R Waukesha Water Doctors – Waukesha ProHealth – Waukesha His pastor explained later, “When I told Larry about the bicycle ride to raise funds for Outreach for Hope, Larry knew exactly what to do. With the pledge sheet and information about Outreach for Hope Larry went around the church and his neighborhood with a mission. He raised almost $300.” I was humbled as he handed me the crumpled bills Two things you need to know about Larry. 1.) He is a member of a church that receives funding from Outreach for Hope. 2.) Larry is one of the people that Outreach for Hope was designed to support. St. Paul’s provides a place of welcome and stability for Larry who spends lots of his time out on the street. That’s why it was humbling for me to see Larry in my office handing me two creased bills, part of nearly $300 he raised for an organization that was designed to support him. Pastor Brown will tell you that God has given Larry a big heart. “The people of St. Paul’s give thanks for his presR ence,” she said. Larry serves as a greeter and a photographer at the church that is his faith Reserve September 10, 2011 for next year ’s ride Are we there yet? Outreach for Hope, Inc. H I S B I G H E A RT 6 www.outreachforhope.org Larry and Pastor Donna Outreach for Hope, Inc. 3 home. Day to day you may see Larry on his bicycle. It’s one of his favorite ways to get around town. Sometimes you might see a bright orange cart behind his bike, filled with cans for recycling. Larry has a heart to serve and to give. Do you have a Heart like Larry’s? As we come into this season of Advent we remember Mary ’s song as she carried the Christ child in her body. She sang, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.” In Christ the lowly are lifted up, the hungry are filled with good things, and those we least expect, like Mary or like Larry, God uses to do great things. In this season of Hope please consider a gift to Outreach for Hope. Let God guide you to bring support for the poor, to walk with the poor, to learn from the poor. Send a check today or go on line at the OFH web site to support the twentyRfour ministries receiving funding from Outreach for Hope. Consider Larry’s big heart and God’s great sacrifice to give us all Hope. Pastor Brown shared, “On the day of the event (the OFH Bike Ride) the rain could not dampen Larry’s spirits. It was a joy to ride with him that Saturday morning. Larry is ready to get on his bicycle and go wherever God leads him.” May God lead you to give generously for people like Larry, who lead us by their own example of generosity in this season of giving. www.outreachforhope.org OFH 2010 - No. 3:Layout 1 11/19/10 4:11 PM Page 4 T H E S E T W O PA G E S R E F L E C T D O N AT I O N S G I V E N B E T W E E N Bernard & Bess Alberg Sandra Alioto John & Mary Almasi Gordy & Nancy Anderson Klennes & Shirley Anderson Keith Atkinson Jane Babcock Ted & Dorothy Baehmann James & Jean Ballantyne Bishop Jeff & Kathryn P. A Quote: When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flock, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace ... to make music in the heart. ~ Howard Thurman, American author, civil rights leader, and theologian (1899R1981) A Bible Verse: Give justice to the weak and the orphan; maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute. 3:Layout 1 11/19/10 4:10 PM Page 1 IN THIS ISSUE...
