Navigating the Waters of Change
Without a Monkey on Our Back
I
n this ever-changing world in which we live, we find ourselves constantly navigating the waters
of change. In recent weeks, the waters have become even more troubled as the leaders of our
land continue to pass down decrees that challenge the foundation of our religious heritage.
Added to the challenges to our religious heritage is the ever-widening spectrum of
Christian beliefs that are dictating changes in so many of our churches across this country.
In light of all of these challenges and changing beliefs, I feel it necessary to reaffirm
the foundation and direction of Children’s Homes, Inc. to provide our supporters with
the assurance and peace of mind they crave in today’s world.
When Children’s Homes, Inc. was founded in 1955 by the 7th and Mueller
Church of Christ, the eldership made the commitment to forever keep this agency
Micah Brinkley a ministry of the Lord’s church. More than 60 years later, the next generation of
those elders serving as our board of directors still works to honor the heritage of their
forefathers by making sure Children’s Homes, Inc. remains a ministry working to save the souls and lives of hurting
children.
This continued effort is made much easier because of the foundation on which Children’s Homes, Inc. was
founded. The basis of our foundation is that all things in life must begin with God and that we never compromise
God. This is a lesson we teach to the children in our care; therefore, our actions must reflect our teachings.
One very important element that enables Children’s Homes, Inc. to stand firmly on our foundation is the
absence of the monkey on our backs. That monkey is the government’s intervention.
Since we are a ministry first and part of our foundation is to never compromise God, we work to keep
ourselves out of situations that would encourage or force us to turn our back on our foundation. This is the very
reason why we have chosen to never take the government’s funding to care for children.
I have known during my 16 years at Children’s Homes, Inc. that not accepting government funding has been
a very wise decision. However, it has only been in the past few years that I have really witnessed just how different
we could be if we were to compromise God and our heritage by accepting those funds.
Our government has become so opposed to any references to or teachings of God that they are demanding
some who accept government funding to change or suffer the consequences. We aren’t facing these demands at
Children’s Homes, Inc. thanks to our faithful supporters. Because of your continued generosity, we continue to be
able to stay as far away as possible from the government’s funding and intervention.
Not having this monkey on our back as we navigate the waters of change is also beneficial as we work to
maintain our identity in the changing beliefs of the church.
It is no secret that the Lord’s church is in a constant state of change in our world. Rarely a day goes by that I
don’t hear of a congregation who is redefining themselves to accommodate the environments in which they minister.
It seems the spectrum of change gets wider and more diverse overnight sometimes.
In this ever-widening spectrum of the Lord’s church, I believe it is so important for all of our supporters to
know and be assured that Children’s Homes, Inc. has no intentions to change with the tides or to ever compromise
the heritage and legacy of our forefathers and, most importantly, the expectations of God, the Father.
Every day, we teach children about God. We pray with them. We worship with them. We study the word of
God with them. We value these privileges as children of God and take every opportunity we can to pass down these
privileges to the children entrusted to our care.
Our children are reared in our homes by loving mothers and fathers who are faithful in their walks with God.
As an extension of the home, our many programs are all Biblically-based and are structured in such a way that all
teachings direct the children back to God’s word and His plan for their lives.

Top Contributing Change
for Children Churches unveiled
A
s we reported in last quarter's Spectrum, our 2015 Change for Children campaign was a
record-breaking success, as we cruised well past our initial goal of $300,000. We ended
up with $379,968, which made up for the absence of dividends we once received from
our liability and property insurance provider.
We're well aware that we wouldn't be reaching any fundraising goals — modest or
otherwise —without the help of our amazing group of supporting churches. We have nearly
300 churches that take part in our annual coinbank campaigns and each of those churches
did their part in pushing us to that all-time high total. We're thankful for each of those
congregations' efforts.

well underway. Our goal, which we're keeping fairly modest, is $350,000. We're confident with our
devoted Change for Children contributors, we'll make a good run at that mark and possibly eclipse
it. As long as we have your coinbanks in hand by December 15th so we have time to count the
change, those contributions will count toward our 2016 campaign.
This campaign is a popular one because it's an opportunity to give gradually — as you can. IF
a period of time pops up when you are unable to spare even a few coins, we understand and the
coinbank will patiently wait until it's comfortable to give again. And though the amount of change
you can cram into a coinbank may seem small, we assure you, every cent helps and is deeply
appreciated. If you or your church congregation is interested in participating for the first time,

Our Best Catch Yet
Bass Classic Has Record Turnout
T
he sixth annual Children's
Homes, Inc. Casting for Kids
Bass Classic on Lake Norfork
near Mountain Home, Ark.,
started out the way every tournament
before it has started: With a handful
of volunteers stirring around 5 a.m.,
searching for coffee and setting things up
for the 7 a.m. launch.
At about 15 minutes before launch,
it became clear this tournament
was going to be different. For five
previous tournaments, CHI Director of
Development Gary Cupp had his eye
on 100 entrants. Until this year, the best
turnout had been 86 boats. With several
minutes of registration remaining, the
milestone of 100 had been reached.
"When I heard the ladies doing
registration announce that team 100 had
just registered I had that great feeling you
have when you’ve finally reached a goal
you’ve been working toward," Gary said.
"But, then I walked outside the marina
and looked across the water to see more
[6]
boats lined up to launch. That’s when I
realized just how successful this year was
shaping up to be."
By the time the last boat was
registered, the previous high and that
previously elusive 100-mark were left in
the dust. Entry fees for 117 teams were
collected, though only 115 boats actually
launched.
The conditions for the April 2
tournament were mostly pleasant but
quite windy. Most of the fishermen
braved the stiff breeze and still were able
to find plenty of fish. A total of 295 fish
were presented at weigh-in for a total
weight of about 700 pounds.
Reeling in the largest percentage of
that total was the team of Randy Zeigler
and Tony Moser, who caught the limit
of five fish for a total weight of 15.05
pounds.
Exactly one pound behind in second
place was the team of Gene and Danny
Four of our children in care — (From left) Sheelah, Stormily,
Deana and Hannah — had quite the responsibility during the
tournament. The girls served as a go-between for our fishermen
and our volunteers who keep track of the standings.

Banquet highlights students' strengths, accomplishments
A

turn to awards banquets and honor
assemblies. Children's Homes, Inc. has it's
own version of an awards assembly that we
call the Celebration of Strengths and Service Banquet.
Students and children of our houseparents are all
recognized for the areas in which they excel and even
have an outlet to demonstrate those areas with a personal
display of their particular interests. The banquet also
serves as the perfect opportunity for instructors of
programs like 4-H, Interpersonal Relationships and
Equine-Assisted Learning to recognize individuals. And,
of course, it's an opportunity to do one of the things we
do best around here — eat.
During this year's banquet, David was presented with
the Endurance Award, an award decided by CHI staff
meant for the student on campus who best demonstrates
the values modeled by Christ.
Our two graduating seniors, Alaina and Deanna
were also recognized and presented with suitcases —
our customary gift to departing graduates. Both girls
graduated this May from Greene County Tech High
School in Paragould, Ark.
Employees were also honored for various lengths of
service. These employees included Shawn and Mandy
Mobley, David and Cindy Wood, Andra Wellsted and
Brad Stout.

CHI's Clothing Center gives children the store experience
B
efore the completion of the Clothing and Food Center on our
Paragould, Ark., campus, the process of children picking out
new clothing was not a particularly dignified activity.
Trash bags would line one hall of the Community Involvement
Center. Children would rifle through the bags, often having to pile
clothes off to the side just to keep them out of the way until they
finished "shopping." These days, the experience is much more like
walking into a clothing retailer.
Stormily, a 17-year-old who's been in Children's Homes, Inc.'s

"We used to have to dig through boxes and bags and search. It
wasn't a lot of fun," she said. "Now it's a lot easier because you can
go straight to your size. You can look around and see the clothes
and they're clean and not all wrinkly. Plus you can actually try it
on then instead of taking it home, trying it on and going through
that process. The dressing rooms make it a lot easier. And I love
being able to see all the clothes on the racks."
The continuous supply of donated items is something that
Stormily has noticed and appreciates.
"I love how people are willing to help instead of just saying,
'Ah, I'll just throw this away.' Instead they say, 'I know where this is
going.' That's really sweet to know that people care enough to give
us their clothes to use," she said.
Since November, not only has the center been open and
running, it's also been fully staffed. For years, Children's Homes,
Inc. owned and operated the Thrift and Treasure Shoppe near
downtown Paragould. Late last year, CHI closed the store and sold
the property. The store's four employees have now relocated to the
Clothing Center, doing much the same work they did at the thrift
store — sorting, cleaning and stocking donated items.

Instrument Donation
On May 19, the children in our care received a gift that will continue to give for a long time to come. The local band
The Ozarks, made up of Greene County Tech High School students, held a concert to raise money to be used to
purchase musical instruments for the children at Children's Homes, Inc. The concert and the coinciding gift were
part of guitarist Luke Atwill's Eagle Scout project. The fundraising goal for the concert was $2,000, but it brought in
a hefty $3,485. Though the original plan was to purchase eight guitars and eight ukuleles, (which works out to one
each per non-relief family home) the unexpected extra funds were used to purchase a cajon or box-shaped drum for
each home. The guys also intend to return to campus to give regular lessons to anyone interested. In the Summer

Appreciation Luncheon
On April 19, Children's Homes, Inc. hosted
a community appreciation luncheon on
our Paragould campus. We broke out
our fish frying crew and invited area
law enforcement, fire departments and
emergency personnel, as well as local
public officials and Paragould Regional
Chamber of Commerce members. We
were very pleased with the turnout, which
was somewhere around 175 people or

And the winner is...
Children's Homes, Inc. had several entrants at the Buffalo
Island District Junior Livestock Show in April. Our biggest
winners were Corbin and Blake, who showed chickens
in the broiler competition. Corbin (above) was named
Grand Champion, and Blake (right) received Reserve Grand
Champion. We also had several pigs entered in the show.
Our highest finishing pig, which finished fourth, belonged to
Rheanna (below).

close third place with 13.9 pounds.
The team of Trent Johnson and Ryan
Miller took home the Big Bass prize of
two Yeti Coolers for a 5.6 pound bass.
The closest competition for Big Bass was
almost a full pound smaller.
Though crossing that threshold of 100
teams lends a certain air of respectability,
Gary expects the tournament to stay
largely the same.
"Several of our seasoned tournament
fishermen commented to our staff that
breaking the 100 boat barrier takes us to
another level," he said. "I really don’t see
us changing any game plans at this point.
I think we just maintain our trajectory
and remain open to suggestions and
input from our participants, sponsors
and volunteers to tweak what we already
have."
So what made this sixth tournament
such a success?
" I can’t think of any one thing that you
might say was an overriding factor," Gary
said. "I just think it was a combination of
many things coming together. Without
a doubt, hard work from our staff and
volunteers during our previous history is
a contributing factor. Our sponsors have

helped give our tournament a reputation
for being generous and thoughtful to our
participants. Even the fishermen who
know going into the tournament they will
not be competitive, know they will never
go home empty-handed and they will
have an opportunity to win some really
good prizes.
"One of the things I’m most proud of
is when I hear a volunteer, fishermen or
sponsor use the phrase 'our tournament.'
Raising money to help our children is
necessary and always a good thing. But
making friends, opening new doors,
building relationships and finding those
willing to take ownership for such a
great cause will create a ripple effect that
can last for generations. No doubt, our
tournament’s success is due in part to
many new friends who take opportunities
year round to promote our tournament
and our cause."
Though a date has not yet been set
for the 2017 edition of the Casting for
Kids Bass Classic, it's never too early to
look ahead. It's important to note that
all expenses for the tournament are
covered by our growing team of sponsors,
including this year's tournament partners

Our staff that supports all the homes for the children
in our care is equally committed to God. Their individual
service in their various roles demonstrates a continuity of
Godly beliefs to the children.
We still believe that God is first and that we must
answer to Him before we answer to anyone else. For this
reason, we work every day to follow His commands found
in James 1:27. We practice pure religion before the Father
by caring for His children who are fatherless, abused,
abandoned and neglected. And, we work tirelessly at keeping
ourselves unspotted from the world by not allowing the
world to dictate our service to God and His children.
Our supporters can rest assured that Children’s Homes,
Inc. is maneuvering the waters of change and is not allowing
those waters to compromise our heritage or dictate our
future. They can also be assured that while we continue to
adhere to all the required government standards for the care
of children, Children’s Homes, Inc. will never allow the
government to keep us from our ministry of using the Bible
to teach the children in our care about the greatness of God.

With limited space (and no outlet to sell items) we have found
it necessary to be more selective on the items we accept. There
is still a constant need for appropriate clothing for children
(from birth to 18 years old). If you, your church or business
are interested in donating clothing, donations are accepted at
the Clothing Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday. We do ask visitors to campus check in at our Community
Involvement Center before proceeding to the Clothing Center.

2016 label collecting
off to a strong start
Thank you so much for continuing to save the UPC bar scanning codes from all Best
Choice products (except fluid milk) and all Campbell's products (plus other products that
have the Labels for Education code).
We have collected 22,000 UPC codes from Best Choice products in the first four months
of this year. We are hopeful that the next eight months will see an even greater increase.
We are now in the process of reviewing the "wish lists" of houseparents so that we can start
the process of spending the $1830 earned during the 2015 year.
We are excited about these ongoing projects and hope that you are so excited that you will
ask your friends and neighbors to help in collecting the appropriate UPC bar scanning codes.
In May we sent in almost 29,000 UPC bar scanning codes from Campbell's products. That
made our "banking total" 101,000 points. We will order merchandise from the Campbell's
catalog in the coming months.
