Flagler Executive Director Shalom, June has finally arrived! Camp will soon rev up for the summer, and the JCA will be filled with campers' laughter; the energy is contagious! Still, you don't have to be a camper to get involved at the JCA this summer! Take a break Jan Lipsky from the heat and come inside to exercise, 730 - 2100 ext. 270 participate in a program or connect with friends. My term as President of the Board will come to an end this month at the June meeting. As I reflect on the past two years, I am proud of many things. It was an honor to serve as JCA president during the yearlong 25th Birthday celebration, a major milestone in our community. I am also extremely proud of the Board and staff’s innovative goal setting work based on the book, The Charismatic Organization. Additionally, the soon-to-be completed demographic survey will give our Board and staff much direction for the future, as our community grows and changes. Finally, our Benchmarking survey results, shared at the past two JCC Association Biennials, clearly reflected our excellence. Jacksonville's JCA is heralded as a leader among JCCs in early childhood education, fitness, cultural arts, staff and member loyalty and retention, as well as a number of other categories. As I move into the role of past president, I will continue to serve on the Board as an advisor for the new president, Adam Frisch. It has been a pleasure to serve as president, a task made easy by the support of Executive Director Myron Flagler, the JCA staff and my fellow Board members and officers. The JCA Board and staff are two groups of friends who are very important to me. They are truly dedicated to serving the agency’s mission, and to serving you, our valued members. Thank you for your love and support of the JCA! I wish you a wonderful summer, and I’ll see you around the J! Howard Korman President’s Award Allison Korman Shelton will receive the Howard Korman Presidents’ Award. The award is named for her father, Howard Korman, past president of the JCA, whose leadership, vision and courage allowed the agency to navigate trying and difficult challenges. This award recognizes Board members who have emulated these significant qualities of leadership, vision and courage during the past program year. Allison Korman Shelton is being honored for her work as co-chair of the JCA’s annual fundraising campaign and Purim Masquerade special event. Ali currently serves as vice president of the JCA Board of Directors and chair of the JCA Demography Study Committee. Ali also received the prestigious Esther Leah Ritz Next Generation JCC Leadership Award from the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America at their Biennial Convention in March. “Ali’s leadership, outstanding success in fundraising and passion for the JCA make her the ideal candidate for this honor,” said Jan Lipsky, JCA Board president. “I know that Ali will continue to do exceptional work for the JCA, truly embodying her father’s JCA legacy.” Special Service Award Talia Steiner will receive the Special Service Award, which is given to an outstanding individual who demonstrates exceptional service to the JCA. Talia is being honored for her work as design consultant during the recent renovation of the JCA Fitness Center. “Talia’s background in architecture and design has contributed so much to the project. She generously donated her time and expertise and helped to ensure that we completed the renovation on budget and, more importantly, on schedule! We are lucky to have Talia as such a devoted part of the JCA community,” said Nancy Green, Assistant Executive Director of the JCA. Talia and her son Eitan became JCA members shortly after they arrived in Jacksonville in 2004. According to Talia, “The JCA is my house and family because of the support I’ve received here. I give back to the JCA by volunteering.” Alliance News E-mail us at: info@jcajax.org 3 MATURE ADULTS 4 Sandy Oasis 730 - 2100 ext. 322 Your Family Tree Genealogist Barbara Cathey will lead a hands on workshop to help you research your family tree. In mid-May, JCA performers ages 7 to 12 put on an original show, “Folktales from Around the World.” Photos and information from the show’s rehearsals and production were shared with the young performers at the Hadera community center. In return, Adi Schwartz at the Hadera community center sent photos of her talented young actors rehearsing their show, a play by highly acclaimed Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin, so the JCA troupe could share the experience of putting on a show in Israel. This collaboration has been extremely enriching and enlightening for both sets of participants. The JCA looks forward to this continuing exchange as a way to gain insight into the others’ worlds. It is recommended to drink water before, during and after exercise. Don’t forget to hydrate, even when exercising in the water. • Wear moisture wicking exercise clothing, not street clothes. Belts, rivets and zippers will damage the equipment’s upholstery. • Always wear closed-toe athletic shoes that support all types of movement, such as cross trainers. Avoid socks that are 100% cotton. A nylon blend will wick moisture and lessen hot spots and blisters. • Be considerate and use good hygiene! Always use deodorant and wash your workout clothes after each use. Avoid wearing perfumes, body sprays and scented lotions while working out. • Have a JCA Trainer assess your current exercise routine to help you meet your personal fitness goals. A session with a trainer can cost as little as $30! • We love our students! Teens ages 13+ get a FREE orientation with a JCA Personal Trainer, then we upgrade their membership card to “adult” status. • A clean gym is a healthy gym! Do your part by using a paper towel sprayed with cleaner to wipe down your equipment before and after use. These sixteen ladies worked really hard to come from last place in the previous season, to winning it all this year. Over the last ten months they have improved their play to come away with a great victory over the other 7 teams in the league. They are already looking forward to defending their title in the fall.
