From the Captain’s Chair
By FCAPT Lora Holman
Greetings Endeavour,
I want to start by saying I could not be more proud of any ship in fleet or any local fan club
for that matter, than I am of all you guys. We have have had our ups and downs. We have seen
growth and reduction, but above all, we have stood the test of time. The Endeavour has been
named at events all over the county, in other states, and even on Canadian television. The club
and its members have been named in numerous magazines, newspapers, and websites. If
anyone asked me what I would like to see in the future for the Endeavour, I would have to say that
I would like to see us continue to move forward at the pace we have set for ourselves.
As the third captain of this great club, I cannot take credit for all the Endeavour has
accomplished. Heck, I cannot even take credit for everything we have done in my three and a half
years as captain. That is why I want to use this article to give a very special “thank you” to our first
officer, CAPT Misty Jackson.
Over the past year, Misty has taken the reigns and ran with this club. She has taken it
farther than I could have imagined and she has done it with unending energy, strength, and
imagination. She continues to amaze me at how she can cheerfully organize and implement
events that normally take an entire committee. She also stays busy in the background. She writes
our monthly SPARS, and stays in contact with the Chief of Membership Services to keep our
membership straight. Misty also has been keeping our monthly meeting notes, maintaining our
activity calendar, and posting reminders so members know what is coming up. I have had
extensive phone and internet issues that have made it impossible for me to keep this ship running
at the peak performance we are used to. Misty has picked up the ball and ran with it as no other
member could have. I cannot thank her enough.
From the First Officer
CAPT Misty Jackson
Welcome all you Trekkies, Trekkers, family and friends. Most of you know that the
Endeavour’s motto is, “Beyond family…beyond friendship.” But does anyone know what that really
means? Many people say, “My friends are my family,” but the Endeavour goes beyond that.
Friends are people you choose to hang out with and family are people you know will always be
there. The Endeavour is a combination of those two and it is greater than its parts. Over the past
nine years we have grown closer and grown together. We have seen new members born into the
group and we have seen young members become young adults. We have worked conventions,
hung out with stars, done numerous charity events, and gotten together for hundreds of good
times.
I have to admit, when we strarted the Endeavour, I no idea what to look forward to and no
idea what to dread. I knew it was fun, and that was enough for me. Now that I have taken a more
leadership role, I can see what all the excitement was about. If we want to have a get-together, all
we have to do is post it on our yahoo group and make a few phone calls. With the number of
members we have, enough show up for an instant party. That is what I love about the Endeavour.
We always work together and there is never any bruised egos. I also love the fact that we are a
family oriented club that offers activities and events for kids, but at the same time, we can schedule
an adults night out for karaoke or to listen to a local band. We can be whatever we want to be and
our success is evident by all the awards we win each year at the Starfleet Command annual
meeting at Starbase Indy.
Some people may call us geeks or nerds, but I can proudly say, “I am member of the USS
Endeavour. We are one of the greatest ships in fandom.” It is an honor to serve as your first
offficer and I hope to continue to help lead this group for many years to come.
The Endeavour Goes to Chicago for Spring Break
by LTCDR Melissa Hollingsworth
As the title suggests, many members of the Endeavour went to Chicago for Spring Break,
2012. But, the truth is, we went to the Indiana Dunes for Spring Break. The weather was way too
cold for the kids, so we changed plans, drove an extra hour, and turned a miserably cold weekend
into a great one.
We checked in to a hotel with an indoor pool, let the kids swim for a while and ate at the
Rainforest Café before we ban our adventure. Since this was a vacation for the midshipmen, we
opted to not go to the usual sites like the Museum of Science and Industry or Shed’s Auquarium.
Instead we let the kids decide. At the request of the female midshipmen, our first stop was the
American Girl Doll Store. The girls had a great time looking at all the different dolls available, but
they were more impressed with all the outfits and accessories.
From there, we went to the Hershey Store. That place is amazing. With all the chocolate
items for sale and the ice cream, we all gained weight just walking through. After many hours of
sight-seeing, riding the city bus, and walking for miles and miles, we decided it was time to eat. Of
course, all the kids wanted McDonalds. But the McDonalds we found was an added attraction
because it had an escalator that led to a second floor. That’s right, it was a two-story McDonalds.
What a way to wrap up a great day. All the kids had a blast.
Endeavour Easter Extravaganza
This year the Endeavour Easter Extravaganza was held at Roy and Cyndi’s house. After a
nice pitch-in style meal, we looked out into the fenced in back yard and found that the Eater Bunny
had dropped by with hundreds of eggs for the children to find.
With plastic grocery bags in hand, the younger kids made a dash to see how many eggs
they could find. The older kids stayed back to give the younger ones a chance. Each of the 15
kids found 20 eggs or more, so no one felt short changed.
All of the eggs were filled with candy or money so for the rest of the get-together the kids
ate candy and the adults snacked on leftovers. We talked for hours, catching up on what
everyone was doing and what future plans we have for the Endeavour. All in all, it was a great
day, but it always is when we all get together.
Two Charity Events in One Day Makes For a Long Day
by FCAPT Cyndi Jackson
At 10am, on July 7, 2012, members of the USS Endeavour gathered at Cox’s Grocery Store
in Alexandria, IN to cook hamburgers and hotdogs. The owner of Cox’s sells the Endeavour all
products at cost and the profits go to charity. After setting up the grill and hanging our banner, we
spent the next four hours cooking, selling, and talking about the Endeavour to people coming and
going to Cox’s. Sales were down because of the heat, but we still had a good time.
Also, on July 7, 2012, The Anderson Speedway allowed the USS Endeavour to hold a
50/50 Drawing at their track. In 105 degree heat, we sold tickets at the main gate until 15 minutes
before the drawing. Our midshipmen really came through by selling over $100 worth of tickets in
the stands where there is no shade. Starting at 4:30pm, we sold tickets for four hours. During the
intermission, a representative from the Hopewell Center Client Council for adults with disabilities
drew the winning ticket and the money from the sales was split evenly between the Hopewell
Center and the ticket holder. We sold $336 worth of tickets, so each received $168. It was a good
end to a long day, and it was a really fun day.
Over 50 Miles of Clean-Up
by CAPT Misty Jackson
A two-mile stretch of highway (State Road 9 in Madison County, Indiana between 600 North
and 800 North) that includes a median is equal to four miles of highway clean-up. The USS
Endeavour adopted the afore-mentioned stretch eight years ago and, for the first six years, we
cleaned it twice a year. Then, last year, we cleaned it once.
6(4x2) +4=52, right?
We contacted the Indiana Department of Transportation and had our adoption reduced to
one mile of highway. We figured it is easier to clean 2 miles of highway twice a year than it would
be to clean 4 miles of highway once a year. They agreed and we tried it earlier this quarter.
As expected, we were finished in less than half the time and we still had enough energy to
enjoy the rest of the day. I don’t know why we did not think of it sooner.
Nashville Creation Con
by FCAPT Cyndi Jackson
Jonathan Frakes and me.
Photo taken while stopped on the interstate
As with all conventions the Endeavour has been involved with, we go there to work, but end
up having the time of our lives. The Nashville Creation Con was no exception.
When Roy and Mark went to Nashville for official Starfleet Command business, I went along to
spend a little time with my husband, check out the convention, and maybe work the recruiting table
a little. It turned out to be a lot more fun than I had expected.
Since we were at a recruiting table, all the patrons came to us to talk, and frankly, for me,
talking to new people is the best part of any convention. It was so much fun I stayed at the table all
weekend. The great thing about a recruiting table in the dealers’ room is that all the stars come
through to check things out and talk a little with the dealers. Even though we had worked with
Jonathon Frakes in Cleveland and Starbase Indy, it was great to see our honorary captain again.
Like all of us, he has aged a little, but he still has his winning smile, great personality, and
awesome voice.
Four Hours of Sitting on the Interstate
After the Nashville Convention, we headed for home. We thought we were making really
good time on I-65 North, until we came upon stopped traffic. Suddenly, Indiana seemed a lot
farther than before. For the first hour, traffic did not move at all. Then, just as we decided to
stretch our legs, traffic started to creep along at about two car-lengths every five minutes. For
some, this could be a stressful situation, but we made the best of it.
Since we were in the same boat as the other travelers, we struck up conversations with
other drivers. We eventually crept up to a church van full of teenagers in the other lane, who
supplied our entertainment for a while. They were out of the van, running around a laughing. The
apparent leader got out his guitar and began to play a nice tune, also.
Eventually, our lanes started to move and we were detoured through a small town, where
we stopped for supper. After a quick bite we were finally on our way down county roads until we
eventually returned to the interstate. When we checked our GPS, we found that we gained three
miles, but four hours had been added to our arrival time.
We later learned that there had been an accident that stopped all the traffic, but there were
no fatalities. That was a relief.
Let Your Trek Flag Fly
USS Endeavour members have shown their pride by putting our logo on a number of things
(see above). In the beginning, we had polos made with out logo on the back and the front. Our
first polos were burgendy and we had matching bright red T-shirts foir the midshipmen. By the
second order, the mebership decided to add different colors and different styles of shirts. At the
time, we also had window decals made for our cars. Now, through Café Press, we have a large
variety of items with the Endeavour logo (see below). Members are urged to click on the Café
Press link on our main webpage and, “Let Your Trek Flag Fly.”
Our Midshipmen
by CAPT Misty Jackson
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the midshipmen aboard the USS Endeavour.
They have been the glue that holds us together and the reason for many of our activities. The
Endeavour started as a family-oriented ship and we have continued for nine years now. We have
won 1st place in many parades because our midshipman chose our themes. To just to name a few:
The Wizard of Oz and Alice and Wonderland.
From the picnics at the park, ice cream socials and bowling, our family activities are
endless! The midshipman are currently working on games to play at the upcoming Starbase 06
camping trip in July. The fact is, if there is going to be a future for the USS Endeavour, or Starfleet
Command for that matter, we must keep our midshipmen involved as much as possible.
The Rumor Mill
As the rumors flew during the filming of Star Trek XI, I sat back and waited to see what the
writers could do to continue our interest. I read so many anti-Abrams reviews, I considered
replying to some, stating “Don’t be so harsh on Abrams until you see the end product.” But, I knew
if I did, I would get trashed by the die-hard fans that already had their minds made up. I felt that
any new Star Trek would continue the franchise, and hopefully bring new fans on board.
With the new Star Trek movie in production, the “Powers that be,” again try to keep
everything, “Hush-Hush.” With all this secretiveness come vague rumors that fill the internet for all
Star Trek fans to consider and comment on. So far, there has been talk of a revisit to both, “Space
Seed,” and, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
As many of you know, “Space Seed,” was the Original Series introduction of Kahn, the
character revisited in Star Trek II. “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” was the second pilot and
the first show that aired in the 1960s. While both episodes were great, it disappoints me that J.J.
Abrams and his writers could not come up with something original that would continue to pique the
interest of new viewers and keep us old-timers happy as well. They have created a new timeline
where anything is possible. Clearly, nothing has to be rehashed.
If, for some reason, they must rehash old stories, there is the possibility that they could
have very different outcomes. This, at least, gives those of us who have the TOS episodes
memorized something to look forward to. There is also the matter of improved technology and
budgets that Star Trek has never seen before. This gives us the hope for some great special
effects and twists that were impossible in the past.
Again, this is all speculation and rumors because nothing is currently being released or
confirmed. Hopefully, in future newsletters, when the movie has developed further along, we will
have something more concrete to discuss as we await the second movie of a three movie deal.
And Now a Word From One of Our Midshipmen:
by Adriana Simon
I was in many of the parades. My favorite was The Wizard of Oz. I was Dorothy along with
one of my cousin Allison. A lot of us helped on the float. It had a rainbow and some music from
the movie. Sometimes I would get off the float and give some of the kids watching high-fives. It is
very exciting to be in the parades. Throwing candy to people as they were watching in excitment.
It makes me so happy to see all the people who come to see the parade. When we are in 1 st place
it makes us all excited. But I think we mostly have fun.
Karaoke Night for the Adults
Members of the USS Endeavour usually spend all their time working for charities and
creating events for the midshipmen. July, 2012 was a particularly busy month with these events,
so the adults felt like they needed a night out.
Captain Misty Jackson, the First Officer, sent out a call for all adults
to attend Karaoke Night at Tilly's Icon, a local bar and grill in Alexandria. After almost three months
of drought, it seemed like a great idea for the bar to hold its karaoke outside on their patio
As with all good plans, they change. One and half hours into the
evening, a storm blew in and the karaoke had to continue inside the bar. Everyone pitching in to
move the party added to the excitement.
EDITORIAL: I Did Not Know I Did Not Like It
One day I was drinking a cup of coffee with cream and sugar when someone told me that I
obviously did not like coffee, or I would not put cream and sugar in it. Months later, when I was
eating a steak with A-1 sauce on it, the same person stated that I obviously did not like steak or I
would not need to put A-1 sauce on it.
After the second statement, I thought about it for a long time and I came to the realization
that I obviously do not like anything I eat or drink. I have pondered this predicament for months
and analyzed my eating habits. While there are foods that I specifically dislike, like seafood, and
spinach, I must categorize all other foods as foods I do not like, but do not make me make ugly
faces when I eat them.
All my life I thought I loved cheeseburgers, but the very name implies that I do not like the
main ingredient of hamburger or I would not want cheese on it. And, even worse, is the fact that
more stuff I put on a cheeseburger, the more I think I like it. This is really weird, because I thought
I liked ketchup too. But obviously, I do not like ketchup, or I would drink it instead of altering its
flavor with cheeseburgers, fries, fried potatoes, etc.
The hardest realization was finding out I did not like my wife’s gravy. For 26 years, I
thought my wife made the best gravy in the world. Now I know that I really do not like my wife’s
gravy or I would not need to put it on mashed potatoes, meat, or in a Beef Manhattan. She has
worked so hard through the years making her gravy that I ignorantly praised. Now I must tell her
not to bother because she will never make gravy that I like.
I guess I owe that person a debt of gratitude for sharing his wisdom and opening my eyes to
the illusive truth that all food sucks. I can now carry that wisdom through my life and share it with
those I love.
Mudathlon
Throughout the history of the USS Endeavour we have been known to offer our services by
being involved in charity events, cleaning the highway, providing security to people we admire at
conventions, fund raisers, etc. This year, we had the opportunity to offer our services at an event
that was new to us. We were invited to volunteer at the Mudathlon.
What is a Mudathlon, you ask? We had no clue which made this event even more
interesting. We arrived at a huge field of a parking lot and soon found ourselves surrounded by
outdoor showers, mud holes ropes, climbing poles, and people in awesome costumes. We took
assigned positions from beginning to end. Three of us lucked into positions of providing care to
participant’s belongings before they began. This gave us the opportunity to talk with people who
actually even arrived from out of state to participate in this grand event.
We soon found that this event takes place in Kentucky, Indianapolis, Ohio, and our location
of Northern Indiana. Several of our members passed water to participants running the muddy
path. They found participants running obstacles courses , at their own pace to allow for the fun of
mud baths, mud fights, climbing ropes, etc. And last, but not least, was our little Becky who had
the opportunity to hang medalions around the necks of finishing, wet and mud caked participants in
which many returned the favor with hugs.
What can I say about the our experience of Mud Crew? It was a mucking good time, the
bands were great, people were friendly, and we hope to be participants rather than volunteers
next year. Check out mudathlon.com for pictures and information and be sure to let us know that
you, like many of us, want to be a part of our team at next years’ Mudathlon so you too can have a
Mucking Good Time of mud, obstacles, and oh, did I mention beer? See you there!
RIVERSIDE, IOWA
by FADM Roy Jackson
Riverside, Iowa is the self-declared future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. In Star Trek
IV, The Voyage Home, Kirk is quoted as saying, “…I am from Iowa. I only work in outer space.”
With that said the town of Riverside Iowa asked Gene Roddenberry if Kirk could be from Riverside,
and he said, “Yes.”
The latest Star Trek movie has Kirk born in outer space, but he is raised in Riverside, Iowa,
and the Starfleet Shipyard will be in Riverside as well. When you enter the town there is the
Voyage Home Museum on the right. Then, as you go to Murphy’s Bar for something to eat, you
see a giant banner over the bar stating it is the future Shipyard Bar where Kirk gets beat up in the
latest movie. And, for the die-hard fans who know someone in the town, there is a plaque under
the pool table stating that it is the very spot where James T. Kirk will be conceived in 2227.
For the past 28 years, Riverside has celebrated Trek Fest annually. Once Trek Fest is
under way, it is more like a town-wide convention with half the town in costume and this year Mark
Williams and I were a part of it. We were asked to be in the parade and I got to ride in a nice car.
During the parade, the announcer even mentioned the USS Endeavour since we are members of
the ship. It is an experience I think everyone should have at least once.
In the parade.

Dana Dougan Memorial Starbase 06 Olympics
and Weekend Camping
Andy Sams, Captain of the Adventure, Corey Hollingsworth, 3 rd place,
Jon Blaylock, 1st place, and Cyndi Jackson, 2nd place
This year, Starbase 06 elected to move the annual Olympics from Leiber State Park to
Summit Lake State Park (both in Indiana). This move was great for the Endeavour because it is
about 60 miles closer to our area. With five of the 14 SFC campsites reserved for the Endeavour,
we were always around people we knew. Members of the Adventure, Halsey, Indianapolis, and
Gorkon were also present for the Olympics and weekend camping.
During the SFC Olympics, we won many of the events and placed well in the others. Our
best event was golf, which was sponsored by the USS Adventure, where we placed first, second
and third.
While the pitch-in meal area was at the RV owned by Mark Milhouse of the USS Halsey, the
late-night gathering spot was at the campsite of CAPT Misty Jackson and family. Members from
other ships would stop by and talk until the early hours of the morning. It was a pleasant, stressfree weekend with lots of fun for adults and kids alike.
