He looked up at the harvest moon and breathed in the chilly fall air. The World’s Greatest Dog Detective let out a long, happy HOWL. Then he set out to patrol Gotham City. 6 crunch crunch crunch Ace enjoyed crunching through the autumn leaves. Batman’s loyal Super-Pet loved everything about this time of year. He loved the changing season, the weather, and especially . . . Halloween! Halloween was Ace’s favorite holiday. What could be better than a day devoted to costumes, celebrating after dark, and getting treats? Nothing! Ace thought. 8 The Bat-Hound took another deep breath. He wanted to enjoy the scents of the season, but — wait a second! The Dog Detective froze in his tracks. He sniffed again and again. sniff! sniff! sniff! Ace had a powerful nose. He had keen eyes. He had sensitive ears, too. The Bat-Hound often used his ultra-sharp senses to detect sneaky criminals and catch clever crooks. But tonight, it was what Ace couldn’t detect that stopped him cold. With his ears up, his eyes peeled, and his nose working overtime, Ace raced through the streets. But no matter where he went, the Bat-Hound couldn’t smell pumpkin guts or roasting seeds. 10 Ace couldn’t see skeletons or spider webs decorating doorways. He didn’t hear giggling kids readying their costumes. In fact, there weren’t even any kids playing outside! Something’s wrong, Ace thought. 11
