The landscape offers a variation of woods, lakes, pastures, that invites you to go hiking, biking, mountain-biking or fishing. Picturesque villages, often with Romanesque churches, castles and gentleman farms embellish the sloping hills. In the pastures the white Charolais-cows are calmly grazing. Rural life is a perfect example of tranquillity and space, of carefree relaxation. Nearby Within less than one kilometre (a nice walk or bike-ride) you will find the centre of the village of Gibles. Here are some shops like the baker, the butcher, the chemist and a post office. There is also a simple restaurant. There are several attractions found in the area. At about 5 km from the town lies La Clayette which is bigger, with supermarkets and a lively marked on Tuesday morning. An after half an hour of driving, you arrive in Cluny, Taizé or in the vineyards of the Beaujolais and Mâconnais. www.gedc.eu www.gedc.eu/cdh 46.354444, 4.332527 v.140112 Description Activities Culinary and Wine More information Our holiday home is former railway guard house, built around 1885. The train track has been out of use for a long time. A sandy track now replaces the rails, but you can still sense the atmosphere of ages gone by. The house is located at the crossing of two unpaved roads, one was formerly the railroad track, the other is a path that was already used in the Middle Ages; this path runs along the lake and an old watermill. L' Etang des Clefs is the right choice for nature lovers, but also for those who enjoy culture. In the area you can visit castles, Romanesque churches and various museums. Except for its hospitality the Bourgogne is known for its elaborate cuisine. Here people still take time to enjoy food and drink. Burgundies are bon vivants and gourmets. Discover, taste and enjoy what is for sale on the local market and in the ‘supermarché’. Cheese, fish, snails, frog legs, ham and pâté: too much to mention. The meat of the Charolais cow and the famous Bresse chicken even has their own ‘appellation’. Originally each railway guard house has the same lay out: a kitchen, a living-room and 2 bedrooms upstairs. Usually there is a basement underneath the house and each house has its own well und vegetable garden. The toilet used to be outside and consisted of no more than a few planks above a hole in the ground. Times change and our railway house has been subject to some modernizations. The thick wall of about 50 cm between the kitchen and living room has been removed, creating a more spacious room with open-plan kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge freezer, 4-ring gas cooker, oven, separate microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, water cooker and blender. The extension houses a bathroom with douche cabin and separate toilet. The cosy wood-burning stove, central to the living room, provides warmth as the evenings get chillier. Other features: Wi-Fi, TV, radio/CD-player, washing machine, dryer, hairdryer, iron, children’s bed and high chair, garden furniture and built-in barbecue. Do you like a good glass of wine with a gourmet meal? Gourmets can have culinary adventures in this regions and lick their fingers. At antique markets you can enjoy rambling through old stuff and in the summer many villages organize their annual festivities. La Clayette , Charolles , Cluny , Taizé , the wine towns Mâcon and Beaune and Europe's culinary capital of Lyon are well worth a visit. There are swimming pools, fishing lakes, hiking and biking trails in the immediate vicinity. Along L' Etang des Clefs are walking routes that you can start immediately from the cottage. In our house you will find a file with general and current information on the Saône-et-Loire with activities and news related in particular to the environment. A range of restaurants, from simple to luxurious, offer you a wide range of regional dishes. Wine lovers can indulge in the wine regions Maconnais, Beaujolais, Côte Chalonnaise, Côtes d'Or and the small and relatively unknown HautBrionnais. Wine can be tasted at various wineries. Take a look on our website for further information.
