In a large bowl, toss the butternut squash with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Arrange coated squash on a baking sheet in a single layer. Roast for 25 minutes or until squash is tender and lightly browned. While the squash is roasting, rinse quinoa Credit: www.littlebroken.com under cold water until water runs clear. Place quinoa and water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook partially covered until liquid is absorbed, about 20 minutes. To assemble the salad, combine the cooked quinoa, roasted squash, cranberries, red onion, toasted pumpkin seeds in a large bowl. Add the vinaigrette and mix until combined. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours and serve. Balsamic Vinaigrette: Whisk all the ingredients in a small bowl until combined. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Dietitian Pro Tips Having a meal plan can help you make better choices for your meals - even if you don’t follow the plan exactly. Plan your meals in advance, and/or have healthy meal items on hand all the time! Like to know more? Contact Doreen at 902-464-2600 ext 307 or macleand@halifax.ca If you have any questions about memberships please call Doreen MacLean, RD: Membership & Health Education 902-464-2600, ext. 307 OR macleand@halifax.ca 4 Fall is all about bright, warm colours. This light salad has pops of those bright fall colours in the orange of the squash and the red of the cranberries and the green of the pumpkin seeds. Try it with rainbow quinoa for an extra contrast! If this is your first time cooking with quinoa instead of rice, please remember not to skip the step where you rinse your quinoa! Quinoa has a natural coating called saponin, which will make your dish taste bitter or soapy if not rinsed first. This massive renovation of the facility will begin in June 2017 and will be completed in Fall 2018. This means that we will have to close the facility for a period of approximately 16 months. The facility and all programs will run as usual until our closure at the end of May 2017. Prices for renewals and new memberships purchased between now and the end of May 2017 will be adjusted to reflect the months remaining until our closure. Please see our customer service desk or contact Membership Services for rates for memberships that run through to the end of May 2017. • FREE cardio centre & weight room access • FREE use of the running track • FREE recreational swims & skates • FREE hot tub, steam room and sauna • FREE group fitness classes • FREE group cycle (spin) classes This fall, the Dartmouth Sportsplex will continue to offer school InService Day Camps for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. This means none of our programs or services will be interrupted between now and then. We will continue to offer all our standard products and services this Summer, Fall, Winter, and into early next Spring. The revitalization will include: • The addition of a two-court gymnasium • Refurbishment of the swimming pool and its features including the addition of a children’s and family splash area, new water slides, and an accessibility ramp into the training pool • A new fitness centre and studios, including new equipment. • New locker rooms • Complete refurbishment of the courts • New public spaces and meeting rooms • Relocation of the customer service area to the main entrance way to the parking lot The renovations will require complete gutting of the central and southern parts of the building. This means the facility - other than the arena - will be closed from June 2017 until Fall 2018. The extent of the construction/renovation makes it impossible to safely offer even limited services. The arena will remain open for ice rentals only because it has its own self-contained entrances, washrooms and air handling systems. One of the key elements of the overall revitalization of the Dartmouth Sportsplex includes the commitment to ensure everyone can access services in the facility. The Dartmouth Sportsplex has already implemented a number of access initiatives and has hundreds of people using the facility who historically have not been able to do so. These initiatives will be expanded in the revitalization.
