Supporting the community
we live in
Football clubs have long been a powerful vehicle in
instigating societal change and giving a voice to important
issues in the community.
On top of the long-term relationships we have with the TAC and
WorkSafe, each year AFL Victoria is proud to partner with a number
of groups, charities and government departments and help
disseminate their messages to the football community.
This weekend of football coincides with Breast Cancer Network
Australia’s 2015 Pink Sports Day.
Pink Sports Day is an opportunity for sporting groups and
their communities to come together and show support for
people in their local area who have been affected by breast
cancer.
Last year more than 900 clubs across Australia took part
and raised $450,000 to help support Australians affected
by breast cancer. This year BCNA hopes to raise $600,000 to
support the 15,600 Australian women and 145 men expected to
be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Football clubs can also choose to support anti-violence
organisation: Step Back Think (SBT), and their Lace Up Against
Social Violence campaign, which aims to raise awareness around
social violence and the consequences that a violent decision made
in a split second can have on the wider community.
Rallying the support of football clubs, SBT hopes to get everyone who
steps on to a sporting field on the second weekend of June to support
the campaign by wearing orange laces.
The laces will be mailed out free of charge to all registered clubs, along
with an education pack outlining how to run a team session about
positive actions young people can take to avoid violent situations.
Visit www.stepbackthink.org to learn more
Finally, AFL Victoria is proud to support a new campaign from the Victorian
Responsible Gambling Foundation that encourages the family and friends
of people with gambling problems to seek support for themselves.
If you’ve been affected by someone else’s gambling problem it’s
important you get support, whether it be financial, face-to-face
counselling or accessing online information or peer support.

Dynamic duo
reunites at
Roosters
For so long it must have seemed like
the magnets were stuck in place with
superglue.
During the North Ballarat Roosters’ much heralded
premiership reign, coach Gerard FitzGerald didn’t need to
look too hard when selecting his starting ruck and midfield
combination.
Big man Orren Stephenson and clearance specialist Myles
Sewell for so long formed part of a nucleus that drove the
Roosters to three flags in a row, and saw both become highly
decorated in their own right.
04
Photo: Mark Bruty
With the ‘Big O’ often dominating the hit-outs and Sewell’s
expertise at the stoppages, the Roosters’ pairing was
undoubtedly one of the most feared combinations in the VFL.
While so much changed at Eureka Oval since the last of the
premierships in 2010, the Roosters whiteboard once again
features two familiar names in their customary positions.
In a recruiting coup, record-breaking coach Gerard FitzGerald
was able to lure both Sewell and Stephenson back to the
club to hopefully ignite another successful era.
After three-years in the AFL system at firstly Geelong, then
Richmond, Stephenson returns to the Roosters as a playingassistant coach, taking charge of the midfield and tapping
into the coaching philosophies of FitzGerald.
www.vfl.com.au
“I still thought I had a bit to give at AFL level so when
weighing up the decision last year it seemed like a bit of
a cop out to head straight back into country football,”
Stephenson said.
“I also wanted to challenge myself and still play in a
professional environment, and having the chance to develop
under Fitzy as a coach is a fantastic opportunity.”
The Roosters, of course, were all too happy to have the
champion big-man back in the fold and, according to
FitzGerald, his return alongside Sewell was a wonderful
endorsement for the club as a whole.
“It’s very symbolic to have Orren and Myles back at the club
and we are really proud of the individual journeys of both,
and like to think as a club we played a role in that.
“It’s a reflection on the club that they have chosen to return
and contribute to the development of others in our group.”
Despite living and working in Melbourne, Sewell said it didn’t
take long to decide that his football future remained at his
old stomping ground.
“Last year after travelling overseas I played handful of games
with my brother at Ballarat in the Ballarat Football League,
and it was pretty clear during that stint that I still had the
desire to play at the highest level,” Sewell said.
“The Roosters and Fitzy, in particular, have played a huge
part in my football and in the end there was really only once
place I wanted to be.”
Sewell’s loyalty was rewarded with the club captaincy, which
he shares with defender Matt Austin.
“It’s a huge honour to lead the club alongside ‘Austo’ and
hopefully we complement each other and bring something
different to the table.”
The ball magnet said it was exciting to once again be at the
feet of his former partner in crime in Stephenson.
www.taccup.com.au
“He’s obviously a quality ruckman and we obviously have a
fair amount of knowledge of how each other plays, so yeah
very happy to be playing together again.
“When Big O came on board I tried to persuade another
former teammate and close friend of mine – Steve Clifton – to
have one more year in the VFL, but he was already committed
to returning to his former club in Lake Wendouree.”
Stephenson said the move back to the Roosters was made
easier because of the familiar faces such as Sewell in the
locker room.
“There are a few guys such as Nick Peters, Myles and Nick
Couch that I’ve played a lot of football with and it’s exciting to
see guys who were in their first year when I was drafted that
have developed into quality players.”
With Stephenson and Sewell back in the centre square, the
Roosters leapt from the blocks in Round 1 with an impressive
win over Collingwood before losses to Werribee and
Williamstown.
While showing positive signs against the Tigers, the boys in
black and white were disappointing in a thrashing handed
out by the Seagulls.
FitzGerald said he would be looking to his leaders in Sewell,
Stephenson and co to lead the response this week against
Richmond.
“It’s a big part of my coaching philosophy that the leaders
are an extension of the coach and have a big impact on the
mood of the group.
“After a disappointing loss it’s normal for the leaders to
be challenged and in turn challenge the group in order to
produce a response.”
One thing is for sure, come Saturday morning at Punt Road,
the Roosters’ hopes will once again be heavily influenced by
the form of Sewell and Stephenson.

Queensland Diary by Jake Lovett
We all know players are accustomed to traveling long distances for TAC Cup games across
Victoria, but what is it like traveling interstate to play?
We asked Dandenong Southern Stingrays Jake Lovett
to detail his journey to Queensland for the AFL Victoria
Record.
Photo: Mark Wheeler
Thursday April 23
Had training Thursday night and we lost two players to
injury on the training track. Discovered midfield rotations
would be adjusted with proposed move to rotate
through defence now not possible. Early night ready for
trip to Queensland on Friday.
Friday April 24
Awake at 8am, already packed and set to leave for
Dandenong at 9am.
Find out on flight to Brisbane I am sitting with Corey
Machaya who is a first time flyer. I myself am not the
world’s best person on planes, but quickly discover I am
doing better than Corey as he grits his teeth during take
off.
Arrive at Brisbane at 3pm. Very excited to be going to
Queensland with my team mates. No time for autographs
at airport, straight on the bus and off to Hotel Ibis.
Brisbane sightseeing consists of quick walk around
Brisbane Central, mainly for a stretch after the flight and
bus trip.
Find out that we were going to have a talk with Justin
Leppitsch, Brisbane Lions senior coach and first Stingrays
draftee. We all really enjoyed and listened to what he had
to say. He was very insightful, explaining what it takes to
get drafted, the principles he works by and good habits
to learn in and out of football.
Roommate for the trip is first gamer Matt La Fontaine
who was excited about making his Stingrays debut.
After a long day, lights out at 10:30pm, ready to take on
Queensland on Saturday.
Saturday April 25
Woke up at 7:45am and go for a quick walk plus a
morning stretch.
weather conditions though, with Melbourne your typical
Autumn 18 degrees, and Queensland turning it on with
a balmy 31!
Heat caused rotations to come a lot closer together,
every four minutes, which was challenging.
Ran out winners by two goals and sung the song strongly.
Rays all played as a team and I’m happy to be a part of it.
Great goal by Jake Dipasquale in the final term, he was
very happy with that one. We will be sure to see that a
few times over the next week.
Left on the bus at 2.30pm to the airport for our 5pm flight
- again no chance for sightseeing.
Back in Melbourne 7:45pm.
Overall a really good weekend and I appreciate what all
the staff did for us pre and post game.
Dandenong Southern Stingrays were the first of three
clubs to head north this season, with Queensland
joining the TAC Cup competition for five games in
2015. The Stingrays join Gippsland Power (Rd 7) and
Oakleigh Chargers (Rd 9) heading to the sunshine state
and came away with a Round 5 win by 14 points.
Breakfast was all you can eat so had to contain myself
with the match just hours away.
Arrived at ground 9:15am for our pregame prep, all
leading up to the last post in respect for the Anzacs.
Definitely a chance for us all to reflect on this very special
day.
Themes for the game were courage and persistence in
honour of the Anzacs many years ago.
A number of us had played Queensland the week before
in the Vic Country practise match so got to know a few
of their more dangerous players. Huge difference in

Cain notches
150-game
milestone
A legend of the
Port Melbourne Football
Club will this weekend
record a significant
milestone.
08
www.vfl.com.au
It is hard to believe that Chris Cain has now
been playing VFL football for 10 years.
Most of all Cain has relished the lifelong friends he has
developed at the club.
The club best and fairest winner, premiership player and
now vice-captain will this weekend join a select group of
current Peter Jackson VFL players in the 150-game club.
“My best mates are John Baird, Sam Pleming, Sam
Dwyer, Shane Valenti, and Toby Pinwill.
Only three other current VFL players have played more
VFL games than Cain, with teammate Toby Pinwill
(151), North Ballarat’s Orren Stephenson (160) and
Williamstown captain Ben Jolley (197) the only others on
a high quality list.
With Pinwill currently on the sidelines, Cain will lead Port
Melbourne as captain in his milestone match against the
old enemy in Williamstown.
When Cain first arrived at North Port Oval back in 2006
as an 18-year-old fresh out of the TAC Cup system with
Oakleigh Chargers, a 10-year career in the VFL at one club
must have seemed a long way off. While he played only a
handful of senior games in his first year the club, Cain has
since emerged as one of the stars of the competition,
The appointment of coach Gary Ayres in 2008 was a
pivotal moment in Cain’s career with the forward-comemidfielder only missing a handful of senior games since
on his way to his 150th this weekend.“He (Ayres) gave
me a pretty good opportunity when he arrived and I
am thankful for that,” Cain said.“We have a really good
relationship, which has only got stronger over the years.”
The milestone game almost never occurred as Cain
contemplated an early retirement post the 2014
season. Off-season surgery took its toll on him, as his
body struggled to recover from both hip and shoulder
operations.
However, the burning desire to be a leader for the new
generation of Borough players, with the departures of
club stalwarts like Sam Pleming, John Baird and Shane
Valenti, motivated Cain to return for another season.
“I had a couple of operations in the off season and wasn’t
coming back as quickly as I would have liked, or would
have a few years ago,” he said.“A lot of older blokes did
leave, so I decided I would stay around as I was not too
happy with how last year ended anyway. I still felt I had
another good year in me.”
“They are friends I have and still see all the time now, so
it is a privilege to have those sorts of blokes that I will
have as mates for a long time from playing football at
Port Melbourne.”
Many believed Cain should be on an AFL list like his best
mate Dwyer but Cain is now content with playing out his
career with Port Melbourne.
“I am content now that the AFL ship has sailed.“There has
been talk every year for the last five years, but I am happy
now doing my part for the club.“The reason I am still at
Port is to win games and play finals and hopefully win
another premiership.
“I am more than happy for the young blokes to be
getting lots of article written about them and that sort of
talk.”Cain explained that in the end working in the family
real estate business - J.A. Cain Real Estate in Camberwell
that his grandfather started over 60 years ago -and
not his body, might be the reason for him to be lost to
football.
With Cain found collecting kicks and not sales most
Saturday’s between March to September, his time for
expanded responsibilities in the family business gets
closer every day.
“In the next few years dad may look at retiring so it will be
time for me to step up and take over.”
“I’m looking forward to moving into the business more
seriously as Saturday is a big day in real estate and I am
not there half the time during football season.”When
he does hang up the boots for the real estate open for
inspections, Cain will know his name is forever etched on
the honour boards at North Port Oval as a major part of
the club’s history.
Cain in 2008
Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres said it was not until the
final training session of 2014 that Cain committed to this
season, and he is thankful he did.
“Chris Cain is just a class act,” Ayres said.
“He is an amazing player over the journey - he has star
qualities that he has been able to bring to the table every
week with his skill, ability to conjure goal from next to
nothing and his leadership.“He is a player that has made
a huge impact on the history of the Port Melbourne
Football club, and was so important as a combination
with Patrick Rose and Dean Galea in the premiership year
with 40 plus goals.”
The 2011 premiership holds fond memories for Cain,
along with a hard fought Preliminary Final win against
Williamstown in 2008.

Milestone for Ayres
Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres will join vicecaptain Chris Cain in celebrating 150 games with
the Borough this weekend.

Joining the club in 2008, Ayres has made a long lasting
impression at the club in his eight seasons at the helm. He
is the longest serving coach in Port Melbourne’s long and
storied history, which is a fair achievement for a club in its
141st year.
While the playing list has undergone a complete overhaul
barring Cain and Toby Pinwill since he arrived at the club,
Ayres realises changes happen quite quickly at this level
now.
This fact is highlighted by the 2011 undefeated
premiership year for Port, with only Pinwill, Cain, Hugh
Sandilands, Josh Purcell and Jake Dermott remaining in
2015.
While he has enjoyed the ride – leading Port Melbourne
to seven straight finals campaigns – it is the players that
have made his time at North Port Oval most enjoyable.
“Obviously the players are what have made the journey
so much more enjoyable, their loyalty and qualities of
those guys that have made such an impact of the Port
Melbourne football club,” Ayres said.
“It has been enormously satisfying to see the players
achieve what they wanted to with the premiership and
have players drafted as well.”
Ayres has seen the likes of Robin Nahas (Richmond 2008),
Malcolm Lynch (North Melbourne 2011) and Sam Dwyer
(Collingwood 2012) drafted to the AFL in his time at the
club, but still believes Cain should have also been a name
added to that list.
“I thought he was really unlucky,” he said.
“I thought someone should have taken a punt on him – in
relation to what he could offer was something that they
have really missed out on.”
Ayres boasts an amazing record at VFL level which is
unmatched - 108 wins, 40 losses, 1 draw -with a winning
percentage of 73%.
Werribee breaks the
drought
The drought was broken for Werribee
last weekend, defeating Port Melbourne
at North Port Oval for the first time since
2006. With experienced players like Tom
Gribble, Jye Bolton and captain Michael
Sodomaco on the sidelines, the young
Tigers lineup was able to hold off a final
term challenge from Port to record back
to back wins after a Round 1 defeat at the
hands of Geelong.
The win quickly had supporters heading
for the record books, with Round 17,
2006 the last time Werribee had been
successful against Port Melbourne on
their home patch; victorious by 17-points.

Make your mark
TAC Cup players are starring in a variety of new club road safety
advertisements, as part of the 2015 Make Your Mark campaign.
Players from each of the 12 TAC Cup regions have stepped in
front of the camera to remind viewers – particularly younger
drivers – to stay safe when driving on the roads.
The ads have been uploaded to the TAC Cup Facebook page
and on YouTube, with a prize on offer to the club whose clip
attracts the most viewers online.
The videos will also be shown on Future Stars this season,
which airs at 1:00pm on Sundays from May 17 on Channel Nine
and WIN TV.
TAC Road Safety Project Coordinator Samantha Buckis said
each club’s clip focuses on one of the nine topics covered
in the TAC’s Safer P-Platers campaign in their video, ranging
from planning a way home on a night out to driving in adverse
weather conditions.
“Other issues like coping with peer pressure, choosing a safe
vehicle to buy and avoiding distractions such as mobile phones
are all problems that young drivers face,” Mrs Buckis said.
“All young drivers and their parents should head to
saferpplaters.com.au for hints and tips to help them on the
road.“
“On top of the great work from TAC Cup clubs in promoting
awareness, the TAC is determined reduce road trauma for
young drivers.”
Drivers aged 18-25 make up only around an eighth of Victorian
licence holders, yet account for almost a quarter of road trauma
across the state.

and Tasmania last weekend. Brown was at the game

VALE Phil Dunk
In sad news for the Calder Cannons, long-time
trainer and life member Phil Dunk passed away last
Saturday night. Dunk, who was inducted into the
clubs Hall of Fame in January this year, was part of
the inaugural Calder team that entered the TAC Cup
competition back in 1995 and had been a tireless
worker at the club and within the competition for
over two decades. In a statement on the club’s
website the Cannons highlighted the influence
Dunk had on everyone one he met: “Phil was the
first person to say hello to hundreds of Cannons
footballers and staff over 21 years, and will be hugely
missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
Our thoughts are with his family at this hard time.
Always A Cannon.”

AFL Victoria launches School
Programs
AFL Victoria’s School Football Programs play
a significant part in the total participation
opportunities offered in Victoria with more than
80,000 students engaged during 2014.
This week, the 2015 School Programs were officially
launched at Punt Road Oval with Richmond captain
Trent Cotchin and female football star Daisy Pearce
on hand to kick-start the season.
The School Programs target all students and include
initiatives such as Umpire Academies, AFL 9s in
School, Access All Abilities clinics and specially
designed curriculum to engage students from a
multicultural background.
But the hallmark of the School Programs remains the
Herald Sun Shield competitions which see hundreds
of schools across Victoria take part in four divisions.
Ballarat’s St Patricks College will be seeking its sixth
straight HSS title this season while the Senior Girls
Division continues to grow in importance throughout
Victorian high schools.
Wednesday’s launch was also used to highlight
the amazing work of the Woolworths AFL School
Ambassadors who help encourage their students to
take up opportunities and play Australia’s indigenous
game.
AFL Victoria recognises that there are amazing
football programs being run at primary school,
secondary school and tertiary levels all across
Victoria, all of which require an ongoing contribution
from Victoria’s outstanding teaches.

Gillon McLachlan launches Umpire
Diversity Academy
AFL Chief Executive Officer Gillon McLachlan was on hand
in Shepparton this week to formally launch a special
Umpire Diversity Academy.
The Academy, which has been running for the past three
weeks at Shepparton High School, consists of participants
from multicultural backgrounds selected from local
schools in the region.
“The AFL is focused on increasing the number of umpires
from Multicultural backgrounds” McLachlan said.
“We know that by diversifying umpiring groups there will
be greater recruitment opportunities for field, goal and
boundary umpires.”
“This commitment is delivering initiatives that will offer
opportunities for people from multicultural backgrounds
to embrace a crucial part of our great game.”
“As well as being a new initiative promoting umpiring in
the local multicultural community the Academy program
also encourages a pathway into community football.”
“This is the first regional academy of its kind in Australia
and it is fantastic to see a strong response from the
students in Shepparton.”
“I look forward to the participants graduating from the
program and hopefully going on to umpire at community
level.”

Round 3
Highlights
GEELONG d RICHMOND
Margin: 9 points
Telling facts: Geelong entered the final term
with one on the bench due to injuries to Smedts

NORTHERN BLUES d SANDRINGHAM
Margin: 6 points
Telling facts: Trailing by 15 points going into the
final term, Sandringham fought back to hit the
lead against Northern Blues, but inaccuracy would
eventually cost them. With 14 scoring shots to five in

the final term to the Blues’ 3.2.
WILLIAMSTOWN d NORTH BALLARAT
Margin: 81 points

the win for Casey. 23rd player Paul Pattison led the
goal kicking for the Scorpions, along with Max Gawn
who was dominant in the ruck for the visitors with 27
hitouts and three goals.

Round 6 Highlights
Eastern Ranges jumped to top spot on the ladder with a final term revival against
Bendigo Pioneers headlining Round 6 TAC Cup action. Dandenong Stingrays suffered a

positive impact in its first TAC Cup clash of the season easily accounting for Sandringham
Dragons. North Ballarat Rebels kept Oakleigh Chargers goalless in the first term helping
set up a convincing 28-point win, while their country cousins Geelong Falcons and
Gippsland Power both recorded back to back wins. Murray Bushrangers returned to the

Tasmania’s Nick Dodge certainly made an
impact early in the game versus Sandringham
Dragons last Saturday. Finishing the game
with 22 disposals and 6 marks, Dodge kicked three
of his four goals during the first quarter and had nine

Just one home team was
able to record a win last
weekend – Gippsland Power.
The Power led at every change,
running away with the game in the
final term kicking eight goals to
two. It was a great weekend for the
interstate teams, with Tasmania
winning its first game and NSW/
ACT Rams going back to back, while
Murray, Eastern, North Ballarat and
Geelong all won on the road.

BENDIGO PIONEERS
Today we would like to thank
the Western Jets for hosting
our game at Burbank Oval.
Thank you to all the parents and supporters who have
made their way down to Williamstown for our game to
support our boys. We would also like to acknowledge
our Major Sponsor JL King alongside our Premier
Sponsors Subway Strathvillage, LaTrobe University,
Bendigo Tafe, Bendigo Senior Secondary College, and
Stramit Building Products for their continued support
of our programs across our region. Go Pios.
CALDER CANNONS
The Cannons would like to thank
the Geelong Falcons FC for hosting
us tonight and their organisation
in putting together this great
advertisement for AFL Victoria and TAC
Cup football, and we look forward to a great contest at
a great stadium. This week, all past and present Calder
Cannons FC staff, players, families and supporters
mourn the loss of Life Member and Hall of Fame
inductee Phil Dunk, who passed away suddenly on
Saturday night. Phil was a part of the TAC Cup since its
beginning in 1992, and joined the Cannons as a trainer
in our first year in 1995. He was recently inducted into
the Calder Cannons FC Hall of Fame and has been a
Life Member since 2004. Phil was the first person to say
hello to hundreds of Cannons footballers and staff over
21 years, and will be hugely missed by all who were
lucky enough to know him. Our thoughts are with his
sister Janet and family at this time. Tonight we wear
our heritage jumper in remembrance of this great man.
Always A Cannon.
DANDENONG STINGRAYS
This week we look forward to the huge
challenge taking on ladder leaders the
Eastern Ranges. The club will be looking
for a stronger showing than last week where we
played catch up football for majority of the day. We
are also indebted to our long term major Sponsor,
Coffey Ford, Dandenong. Without Coffey’s continuous
sponsorship of the TAC Cup Under 18 program (since
1995). We would also like acknowledge and thank
Silvio Marinelli and his team from Highview Accounting
Services for extending their sponsorship looking after
the development of our players/families on and off
the field. Highview are running investment seminars
throughout May- all information available on the
Stingrays web site. In closing the Stingrays would also
like to acknowledge and thank all player sponsors,
without your tremendous financial support many
players would find it a lot harder. Lastly, a big thanks
goes to all Mum’s and Dad’s who have been helping
with Thursday night dinners and game day duties,
without your assistance and support our season
wouldn’t be running as smooth as it is.
18
EASTERN RANGES
The Eastern Ranges would like to
welcome Rowville Secondary College
on board as a new club partner.
Rowville Secondary College has
supported the Ranges for a number of years and we
now look forward to an even stronger partnership with
the school and its Football Academy Program over the
coming years. The Rowville Sports Academy enables
talented young footballers within the region to develop
their sporting talent in an elite environment whilst
balancing this with their secondary school education.
For more information please contact the school on
9755 4555. This week, the Club welcomes Dandenong
Stingrays players, families, fans and staff to our first
Box Hill City Oval home game of the season. We would
like to thank the Box Hill Hawks once again for their
ongoing support. The side scraped through for a close,
hard fought 3 point win over Bendigo last week, and
will be looking for a more complete performance
today. Finally, a reminder to all players, parents and
supporters to check our website (easternranges.aflvic.
com.au), Facebook page (facebook.com/eastern.ranges)
and Twitter (@Eastern_Ranges) for all the latest news,
updates and scores. Go Ranges!
GEELONG FALCONS
Geelong Falcons would like to thank all
the crew at the Northern Knights for the
hospitality extended during last Sunday’s
encounter at Preston City Oval. The match
itself was a highly entertaining and skilled contest and
we were very relieved to prevail in the end by about 3
goals. We wish the Knights coaching staff and players
all the best for the remainder of the season and have
little doubt they will trouble many TAC Cup sides during
Season 2015. This Friday night’s match at Simonds
Stadium against Calder Cannons has been keenly
anticipated by Falcons’ players since this season’s
fixture was released. We see this stand-alone fixture as
an outstanding opportunity to show-case the talents
of both sides at a first class football venue. This match
shapes as another tough challenge for the Falcons
playing group but we’re looking forward to having
football fans from the Geelong region getting behind us
at Simonds Stadium for this special occasion. You can
follow us on Twitter: @geelongfalcons and for a bit of
fun, we’ll be tweeting with this week’s match tagline:

mums at the Murray Bushrangers, we
have an enormous network of dedicated
mothers who support both our playing group and staff.
We hope you all have a wonderful day and were spoilt
by the boys before today’s game. After a strong win
over the Calder Cannons last week we look forward to
the challenge of taking on a strong New South Wales

GIPPSLAND POWER
Everyone at Gippsland Power is
looking forward to today’s trip north
for the encounter with Queensland
at Broadbeach. We are well aware that we have a
tough assignment but we are keen to atone for last
season’s 1-point loss to our hosts when they beat us at
Morwell. Gippsland Power F.C. is most grateful for the
outstanding support afforded by our major sponsors
GDF SUEZ – MITSUI & CO, Loy Yang ; Colin Watson
Holden Traralgon, Bendigo Bank the community bank
with branches throughout Gippsland and the Warragul
Linen Service. We urge all Club officials, players and
followers to support these and all other sponsors
whenever the opportunity arises. A summary of all
our associate sponsors is set out for your perusal
next to our team list in each week’s edition of the AFL
Victoria Record. We urge all supporters to make the
trip to Ballarat next weekend for the clash with the
Rebels at Eureka Stadium. Our officials and players will
certainly welcome your support. We have pleasure in
announcing the appointment of David Hobbs as the
Gippsland Power F.C. chaplain.
NORTHERN KNIGHTS
As part of our partnership with the TAC,
we look forward to all our “L” Plate
Drivers, driving to Eureka Stadium for
our Rd 7 game today against North
Ballarat. This activity will provide an opportunity for
our young drivers to gain over an hour’s valuable
driving experience on both city and country roads. The
Knights would like to congratulate Kyle Langford on
making his AFL Debut for Essendon last Sunday. Kyle
picked up 12 possessions in the Bombers two point
win over St Kilda at Etihad Stadium. We wish Kyle all
the best for the remainder and look forward to him
continuing his career in the AFL. Again we would like to
acknowledge our Major Sponsor Technika, a leading
producer of high quality kitchen & laundry appliances,
for their 5th year as Major Sponsor of the Club.
WESTERN JETS
The Western Jets would like to welcome
the Bendigo Pioneers to Burbank Oval
for today’s big clash. Both sides are
desperate for a win and it should be
a great contest. The Club is looking
forward to its first social function of the year tonight
when all players and staff will be heading to Club
Sponsor the Yarraville Club for dinner. The Western
Jets Football Club are proud to say that three former
players have already made their AFL debuts this season
with James Sicily (Hawthorn), Liam Duggan (West
Coast) and Corey Ellis (Richmond) having a taste of
AFL football. Everyone at the Club is proud of those
players and will be watching their progress intently.

Draft Watch
We follow TAC Cup and VFL players on their AFL football
journey as they attempt to make it in the big league.
Saad a Rising Star nominee
Former Coburg player and 2014 VFL Team of the
Year selection Adam Saad is the Round Five NAB
AFL Rising Star nominee.
The Gold Coast Suns draftee received votes in the
Marcus Ashcroft Medal following the Suns’ 64-point
win over the Brisbane Lions in Saturday night’s
Q-Clash.
The running defender collected 26 possessions,
took seven marks and had nine bounces in the
Suns’ first win of the season.
After being over looked in two NAB AFL Drafts,
Adam, 20, was selection 25 in last year’s NAB AFL
Rookie Draft and was upgraded to the Suns’ senior
list after impressing in all three NAB Challenge
matches.
He made is AFL debut in Round One and has
played all five games this year.
Adam played junior football with the West Coburg
Football Club and the Calder Cannons. He
represented the World XVIII at the 2011 NAB AFL
Under-16 Championships.
He progressed to Coburg where he was joint
winner of the 2014 club best and fairest and
was named in the VFL Team of the Year. He also
represented the VFL in an International Rules
Challenge match against Ireland late last year.
Adam is one of three practising Muslim players
in AFL (Richmond’s Bachar Houli and St Kilda’s
Ahmed Saad – no relation).
Suns coach Rodney Eade said Adam has done
everything possible to get his chance to play at the
highest level.
Debuts
It was a big weekend in Round 5 for AFL debuts: Former
Western Jet Corey Ellis made his debut for Richmond,
while former Vic Metro teammates Daniel McKenzie
(Oakleigh Chargers/St Kilda) and Kyle Langford (Northern
Knights/Essendon) faced off in a close encounter at Etihad
Stadium.
“Adam is a great story of perseverance. Overlooked
in two drafts, he continued to work on his game,
and with the help of Peter German and the staff at
Coburg he’s hard work resulted in him gaining a
rookie spot last year.
“Since arriving on the Gold Coast Adam hasn’t put
a foot wrong, his attitude and willingness to learn
saw him earn a rookie elevation and selection in
our first five games of the season.
“Adam has had a great start to the season, he’s
ability to take the game on and generate run
for the team has been outstanding. With further
development, education and hard work we believe
Adam has an exciting career ahead of him,” Eade
said.
