HEIGHTS HYPE
BRUCE PARK KINDERGARTEN
There will be a PUBLIC MEETING next Tuesday, 25th March at 7:30pm at the Frankston South
Community and Recreation (Towerhill Rd Frankston) to discuss the relocation of the Bruce Park Kindergarten . I urge
you and any of your local friends to attend this meeting to question the relocation and logic behind this decision. The
detrimental effects of this decision will be felt by all current and future residents of Frankston Heights. This will clearly
have an impact on our school also.
I have a meeting with the Frankston Mayor and the DEECD Regional Director on Monday 31st March to discuss this
issue. There are many people attempting to get this decision reversed. Our best method will be for a huge number of
people to attend this public meeting and express their concerns in regard to this proposal.
SCHOOL FAIR
Last Saturday the weather held out and a wonderful day was had by everyone who was at our biennial fair. We were so
lucky with only the first signs of rain arriving in the last half hour of the fair. Just as well the storm held off until 6pm! I
would like to thank the organising team led by Mel Wagner and Louise Williams for their enormous efforts organising the
fair. I would like to thank all of the staff for giving up their Saturday to come along and help on the day. I would especially
like to thank all of the parents who were able to help on the day. We had numerous parents arrive and jump on a stall
when they discovered that they had an hour free to help—this was really appreciated! A huge thank you must be given to
our wonderful office staff who have been working tirelessly assisting with the organisation of the fete saw so many smiling
faces on all of the children having a wonderful time on all of the activities and rides. It makes all of the effort worthwhile! I
spoke to many prospective families who were most impressed by our day and the sense of community!

Our Year 5/6 Beach Week at Carrum last week was a huge success with students thoroughly enjoying
the opportunity to put their swimming and safety skills into practice. Thank you to our parent helpers
on Friday who prepared the sausage sizzle for our children.
Swimming for years Prep to 4 was once again a highlight for the children last week. The intensive
nature of the program at Somerville ensures the children are really honing their skills. Thanks
again to the many parents who visited the pool to help with changing and to watch and support the
children.
Now that our weather is beginning to cool down I would ask that all school families ensure that
correct uniforms are available for your children to wear to school. Jackets and other items should
be named and in a neat condition. Our Uniform shop is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for
sales.
A reminder that next week our district sports will be conducted on Friday 28th March with
approximately fifty students representing the school in track events. We wish them all the best of
luck!!!
Next Monday our Prep to Year 6 classes will be involved in a free St. John’s First Aid in Schools
Program. Students will be provided a 45 minute program appropriate to their year level. We believe this
will be most beneficial for our students and would ask that you return the consent forms if you have not
already done so.
Lastly, a huge thank you to all our school community who supported our school fair last
Saturday. The weather was kind to us and there was a real sense of community throughout
the day. We are still finalising the total amount raised but from a school community
perspective, the day was highly enjoyable and very successful.

CANTEEN NEWS:
Thank you to all those who have volunteered their time to help in the canteen. Your
children have loved seeing you there! Remember we are always in need of volunteers in our
canteen to help with over the counter sales and collating lunch orders. We especially need
helpers when we have Friday specials as there is a large number of orders. In return we
offer your child/ren the choice of a free slushie or milkshake on the day you volunteer!

SCHOOL NEWS:
GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL—donation envelopes have been sent home with each family to help raise
money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. All money placed in these envelopes
will go towards the Royal Children’s Hospital Telehealth Project. This project enables children who
reside in rural and regional areas access to video consultation, reducing patient travel time, time
away from school and disruption to family life. Please have all donation envelopes named, sealed
and returned to the front office by TOMORROW FRIDAY 21ST MARCH 2014. Anything you can give
would be greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductable. You will receive a receipt once
donations have been processed through the Royal Children’s Hospital on Good Friday.

Head Lice
About 1–4% of the population has head lice at any given time, but in outbreak situations
this figure may rise as high as 10–15%. It seems that we are experiencing an outbreak at
the moment.
Head lice are small parasitic insects that live among the hairs of the head staying close to the
scalp and feeding on human blood. They cannot survive for more than a day or so at room
temperature without ready access to a person’s blood. Itching of the scalp is usually the first
sign of infestation. Their presence does not infer a lack of personal cleanliness or hygiene
practices by their host.
As they cannot jump or fly, head lice are mainly acquired by direct head to head contact with
the hair of an infested person, but may infrequently be transferred by shared combs, hats
and other hair accessories. They may also remain on bedding or upholstered furniture for a
brief period. They are unlikely to wander far from their preferred habitat and are unable to
burrow into the scalp.
To check for head lice infestation, comb any type of conditioner through dry, detangled hair.
This stuns the lice and makes it difficult for them to grip the hair or crawl around. Next comb
sections of the hair with a fine tooth comb. Wipe the conditioner that collects on the comb
onto a paper towel or tissue. If lice or eggs can be seen on the tissue the hair should be
treated.
A complete regime consists of two treatments seven days apart: the first to kill the climbers,
and the second to kill the juvenile lice hatched from the eggs over the intervening six days.
No product currently available kills all eggs. If using lotion apply the product to dry hair. For
shampoos, wet the hair, but use the least amount of water possible. Ensure that you treat all
the hair from root to tip, and leave the preparation on the hair for at least 20 minutes.
Pillowcases used by the host should be laundered in hot water, or dried in the clothes dryer
on the hot setting. There is no need to treat the whole family, unless they are found to also
have head lice.
It should be noted that these treatments do not prevent the infestation of head lice – in fact,
ongoing use of these products in the hope of prevention can prove to be dangerous.

THE ARTS
…….
Term 1 has been a busy time in both Performing and Visual Arts with students from all levels working
industriously not only during their timetabled sessions, but also during their recess and lunch breaks. Senior
students have been exploring ways of re-using a range of materials to create some interesting artworks,
including cassette tape portraits and coffee paintings. These students have also researched and developed
excellent three-dimensional models of musical instruments using scrap materials.
A study of the book ‘Uno’s Garden’ has provided many opportunities for Middle School students to develop
a range of skills in both Visual and Performing Arts. Wonderful paintings, collages and models have been
added to our ‘garden shack’ display in the art room and used for props in Performing Arts.
Junior students have explored a range of activities based on ‘The Seasons’ while learning about colour and
texture. Preps have made a confident start and enthusiastically embraced all tasks in the Arts classes.
