MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF GARDEN CITY BAPTIST CHURCH
VOLUME 29 NUMBER 5
Pastorgraph
May will be noted for three events
that garner our attention.
One, our Spring Revival Bible
Conference will be May 1-4, 7 p.m. except
Wednesday when services will be held at
6:30 p.m.
Our speakers, (see article in The
Link), will preach and teach the Bible.
They will inspire us to Worship, Witness,
Study the Bible, and Serve Others in a
more blessed WAY.
Two, Mother’s Day is May 8.
God bless “moms”. Carl Sandburg once
related the story about a mother who
brought her baby boy to General Robert E.
Lee for a blessing. The Southern
gentleman tenderly cradled the lad in his
arms then looked at the mother and said,
“Ma’am, please teach him about God and
that he must deny himself.”
Mother’s Day helps us with our
ever-growing “me-ism” by reminding us of
the sacrifice, love, provision, guidance, and
direction of our blessed mothers. May we
express Thanks!
Three, Memorial Day is a
celebration of all that is best about
America. It is a time of thanks,
remembrance, and recommitment to
principles that made us a great and good
nation.
Over the roar of the bikes, May
we be heard humming “God Bless
America” and “O Beautiful for Spacious
Skies…”
Have a Wonderful May!

More details to come on this month-long contest which will

Joy Fellowship
At our April meeting, we were entertained with oldies but goodies
hymns by the GCBC men's singing group. It was great to be able to
sing along with them to these old hymns. Our last meeting before
summer break will be on May 9 at noon in the Fellowship Hall.
Bring a side dish, a friend and come fellowship with us.
Speaking of fitness, spots in our Sports Camp (June 28-July 1) for
kids 5k-6th grade are going fast! Don’t forget to register your child
for our free Basketball Camp (50 spots) or Cheerleading/
Interpretative Movement Camp (25 spots). Register by June 26 on
our website at www.gardencitybaptistchurch.com/sports-campregistration/ or by contacting the church office. Also, be sure to
RSVP to the event on Facebook in order to receive updates on
Sports Camp. Please be in prayer that this event would be a success
and would have an impact on our community.
Sunday School Report
Our Sunday School continues to grow. Here is some information I
shared in the April church conference.
Sunday School membership this church year (since Sept. 2015) has
increased from 291 to 322 an increase of over 10%. This church
year our Sunday School attendance has averaged 182 without the
flood Sunday compared to 169 during the last church year. This is
an increase of 7%.
The new Sunday School class is going well. 15 people have
attended. We have averaged 8 per Sunday and those missing are
contacted. Class participation has been outstanding.
God continues to bless Garden City.

Circle of Friends
Circle of Friends was great! A big Thanks to Debbie and Rachel
from Lifeway, who came and showed us how to do Bible
Journaling! We had about 19 ladies in attendance and I think
everyone had a good time. Lifeway even brought a Journal Bible
to give as a door prize and the winner was Tereasa Hager, who
came to church Sunday and decided to join us for this fun
evening. Look for up come events in the Link and Bulletins!
Gospel Body is still going good. We continue to meet Monday,
Wednesday and Friday at 10:00am. We continue to do a walking
DVD that last from 30-45 minutes. Just bring a bottle of water
and dress comfortable. No laying down on the floor at all!
APPALACHIAN UPDATE – From Eric & Sissy Rutherford
on mission in Lynch, Kentucky
If you have been on a mission trip here you met Pete, the Project Manager
for Meridzo. He recently accepted a position with SWAP, another
ministry in the area. We’ll miss his family, but we wish them the best
where God has called them. That said, he left some big shoes to fill
directing the projects that visiting teams do in our area. As we pray for
the person God will send to replace him, we’ve all had opportunities to
share the load. It has been a blessing working face-to-face with the teams
helping here.
This past week 40 high school students from Danville, KY were here.
They helped in countless ways. One that will affect the coffee shop is that
they cleaned and tuned up the 10 mountain bikes we will rent as to
support the efforts to develop adventure tourism as an alternate source of
revenue where the coal mining industry is drastically declining. Looney
Creek Bike Rentals (The coffee shop sits astride Looney Creek and next
to the newly developed Looney Creek Trail) officially opens May 1 st.
The group also helped with carpentry, painting, clean-up, widows and
nursing home visitation, weeding, mowing and mulching, moving chairs
and tables that the ministry’s Community Christian Center donated to the
local day care, and serving free hot dogs to the community at the little
league park.
Tuesday we hosted them at the shop and shared testimony with them. It
was cool because years ago some of their members cleaned coal dust out
of our floor before we even knew the shop existed. They also shoveled
mud out of our lot for two days last year following the mine blowout and
mudslide.
In another major leap forward for the community, the Black Mountain
Exchange, a convenience store under our purview operated by the
ministry that just opened in February is finally selling gas and diesel. In
addition to providing jobs, building relationships and witnessing as we do
at the coffee shop, the ministry has deliberately priced our fuels fivetwelve cents less per gallon than stations in nearby Cumberland to help
make it more affordable.
Last night Sissy spent hours in the E.R. with one of our Tri-City Trolley
regulars who doesn’t have a car. She showed up on our doorstep with a
badly infected hand after she was “stung by a wasper” as they say here.
Meridzo’s mission statement is very simple: “Helping others and sharing
Jesus” and hers was just another example of the opportunities we are
given to serve here thanks to your support.e here thanks to your
Widow’s Ministry
Widow's Ministry, We will be celebrating Joan Brewer's
birthday on Sunday, May 15th at Driftwood's on Hwy. 707.
Please meet down front after the service to carpool. Please come
and enjoy good food and wonderful fellowship. If you have any
questions or suggestions please contact Pat Hample 843-7480163 or 704-460-4056. And as always we give God all the glory
and praise for all he is doing through this ministry.
WMU
We had 14 ladies in attendance last month with lots of good
food, and a lot of information from the annual meeting. Please
plan to come on Saturday, May 14th, at noon in the fellowship
hall. Bring your favorite finger food and your calendar, we will
be planning several activities for future months. We may have a
special guest speaker, check bulletin for future details. If you
have any questions or suggestions please contact Pat Hample.
support.

The RA’s & GA’s went head to head in their
annual pinewood car derby on Saturday, April 23.

in 1st place with her car number 21 setting the
fastest time of the day at 3.6022 seconds. Kayla
Thompson came in 2nd place with her car number
7 finishing not far behind with a time of 3.664
seconds. Layla Pierce came in 3rd place with her
car number 29 finishing with a time of 3.71
seconds. A great time was had by all who attended
and the competitors celebrated with a hot dog
lunch. Thanks to the following volunteers who
helped make this derby a success: John Platts, Tom
Barnes, Danny Miller, Connie Miller, Jim Pigate,
Ron Kirk, Jewel Weaver, Kathy Graham and

Solid Ground Student Ministry
What is the cost of following Jesus? What
does it mean to take up your cross? Does
following Jesus really mean giving up
everything? Questions like these have been
topics we have been discussing this past
month on Wednesday Nights. Luke 9:23 says,
“Then He said to them all, “If anyone wants
to come with Me, he must deny himself, take
up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
From this passage we have learned that
following Jesus means following Him:
1. Anywhere
Following Jesus means following Him
without exceptions. Wherever He leads, you
go.
2. At Any Time
Following Jesus means following Him at any
time- whether that be during an easy time, or
a difficult one. We must take up our cross
“daily”.
3. At Any Cost
Following Jesus means having a willingness
to follow no matter what. As Paul said in
Philippians 3:8, we must, “consider
everything to be a loss in view of the
surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my
Lord. Because of Him I have suffered the loss
of all things and consider them filth, so that I
may gain Christ.” Whatever we leave behind
in no way compares to the gain of knowing
Christ as our Savior and Lord.
As you know, we have been working on our
plans for this summer and fall. On July 13-17
we will have Youth Week where our students
will meet every day in the evening at various
locations for fun, food, fellowship, and Bible
Study. We expect this to be an event that will
help our students grow in Christ as well as get
to know one another better.
Please pray for the students this month as they
are taking exams. It’s hard to believe the
school year will be over in a little more than a
month! We are looking forward to summer
and we hope you have a blessed May!
