information
welcome
Kandersteg in winter is a magical experience.
From mid December until late March, the snow
descends and the Alps become a winter wonderland.
Kandersteg is located right in the middle of the action,
in the perfect position to enjoy a wide variety of winter
activities. The village has two small, quiet downhill ski
areas – the perfect place to learn to ski or snowboard.
With over 70km of marked tracks, it is also one of
the leading Swiss resorts for cross country skiing.
The cross country ski tracks, as well as winter hiking
and snowshoe trails pass right by our front door. If
you fancy something a bit different, Kandersteg has
a 3.5km sled run and is also world famous for it’s ice
climbing. In the evenings try curling or ice skating at
the local ice rink, or simply relax in our traditional
Finnish wood fired sauna.
In winter there are many special events going
on in Kandersteg, including the Dog Sled World
Championships and Belle Epoque week, where
Kandersteg turns the clock back 100 years, with a
costume party, wooden skis and much more.
If all this sounds good, read on and find out more
about how to come and visit KISC in Winter!

Kandersteg
The European motorway network can take you
to Spiez – 30 minutes north of the Centre. From
the south take the car train from Goppenstein to
Kandersteg. Groups travelling by road will find limited
car and coach parking facilities at the Centre. Please
be aware that you need to purchase a vignette for
CHF 40.- to use Swiss motorways.
By Plane
The nearest international airports are located in
Geneva, Zurich, Basel, Bern and Milan. Zurich and
Geneva airports have their own train stations and the
Swiss train system is punctual and easy to use.
By Train
Scout Transfer Ticket
KISC is well located for most European countries with
routes via Bern, Basel, Geneva or Brig. For timetables
and prices visit www.sbb.ch. Swiss trains are fast,
clean and efficient, and often the cheapest way to
get to KISC.The Centre is about 25 minutes walk
from the village train station. A local bus runs hourly
during the day from the station to the Centre and is
free when wearing a scout scarf. The Centre can
provide luggage transfers from the station, if booked
in advance, for CHF 30.- per run.
Guests travelling to KISC can buy a
special discounted ticket, offering train
and bus travel from any airport or border
station in Switzerland to Kandersteg and
back again. This ticket is known as a Scout
Transfer Ticket. Prices for 2015:
By Coach
These prices give you a saving of 44%
compared to buying standard train
tickets. Scout Transfer Tickets need to
be purchased in advance, direct from the
Switzerland Travel Centre (STC). They can
then be either posted to you, or simply
picked up at your arrival airport. For more
information, to buy Scout Transfer Tickets
and book other international rail travel, go
to www.stc.co.uk/kisc.
The Centre works with a local coach company who
can provide good prices for coach trips in Switzerland.
Whether it is a return transfer from an airport, or a day
trip to a city, coach transfers offer peace of mind and
convenience. For large groups, the price can often
be cheaper than the train. Contact the programme
department with details of the tranfer (flight numbers,
dates, group size) to arrange a quote.

information
Making a Booking
Booking requests can be made directly with the
Centre through our website. After receiving your
request for accommodation, we will check availability
and make a provisional booking if possible.
If the requested accommodation is unavailable
we may be able to offer you alternative dates or
accommodation.
Once a provisional booking is made, you will be
asked to make a prepayment of at least 50% of the
accomodation cost.
Only when you have made this prepayment is
your booking with us confirmed, and can you then
book Catering, Guest Kitchens and Programme.
Scouts and Guides will be given priority on bookings
during our high season.
Cancelling a Booking
Please take care with your reservations and
remember that every wasted space is a disappointed
Scout. If you cancel your booking up to 90 days
before the date of arrival, half of the prepayment will
be reimbursed, minus any bank fees incurred.
winter kit list:
what you need
to pack
The alpine environment can be
dangerous. Our activities will take you
outside into the Alpine winter which can
be unforgiving. It is therefore essential
that you and your entire group wrap up
warm and have the correct equipment. If
you do not have what we consider to be
suitable equipment to take part in one of
our activities, then you will be unable to
participate.
•Ski trousers and jacket - preferably
waterproof
•Thermal underwear, warm clothes
•UV/sun protection cream and lip
protection - factor 20+
•Sun glasses or ski goggles with
good UV protection
•Any special medication you might
need - e.g. Asthma
•Warm hat and Gloves - preferably
waterproof
•Rucksack
•Full water bottle - minimum 1 ltr
•Re-usable lunchbox
•Waterproof hiking boots -if you are
doing winter activities such as
Gemmi Hike n Sled
•A few pairs of good ski or hiking
socks - depending on what
activities you are doing
In the event of cancellation after this point, the
prepayment will be kept in full by the Centre.
If you reduce your participants from the original
booked total participants, less than 90 days prior
to arrival, an administration fee of CHF 25.- will be
added to the bill for each participant that does not
check in.
Changes or cancellations to catering have penalty
fees if you do not give more than 24 hours notice. For
full details see our General Terms and Conditions on
our website.

The Programme Staff
Activity Bookings
The Programme Staff work year round, know the
Kandersteg region inside out and are happy to help
you plan and run your own individual programme.
This can be based on the many activities on offer
during the main Winter season. These activities may
also be available at other times of the year, depending
on conditions and the availability of Staff. In any case,
we can offer advice on most activities in and around
Kandersteg. As well as our Centre programme,
we have information on attractions, special deals,
unguided activities and coach trips. Whether you want
to come alone or as part of a group, if you want a full
programme or just a little advice, we are here to help.
Once your prepayment is made, you can book
activities, using a Programme Order Form. Winter
activity bookings open September 1st, 10:00 CET.
Insurance
Non-Guests
Please remember that the Alps, and mountain
activities, can be dangerous. It is your responsibility
to ensure that you and your group are fully prepared
for all the activities that you intend to undertake,
both in terms of fitness and equipment.
Our activity prices are exclusive to guests staying
at KISC. Non-guests are welcome to arrange
programme and equipment bookings in advance
for a small surcharge of 10% of the activity cost or a
minimum CHF 1.– per item, whichever is larger.
The Centre’s insurance does not cover you or your
group against accidents that may occur during your
stay. Please check your insurance policy carefully
and make sure that it covers all rescue and medical
costs. It is essential that you have full insurance
cover. We can arrange insurance, additional to your
own cover, to make sure you are fully insured for
adventurous activities. Contact us before arriving to
arrange this. For more information visit our website.
Website – www.kisc.ch
Weather in Kandersteg
The KISC website is available in English and
German and contains complete information about
the Centre. Find out all the latest news and events,
as well as more details about the individual activities,
catering options and more information on our
accommodation. You can also find out about how to
become a member of Staff or the KISC Association.
Wintery weather can be expected in
Kandersteg from any time in November
through to April. Most ski resorts and
Gondolas are open from mid-December to
mid-March, depending on snowfall. If you
are travelling with your own transport,
then vehicles need to be prepared with
winter tyres.
If you do not book in advance, we may not have
staff free to run your desired activities.
Our activities are booked on a ‘first come, first served’
basis, so please start planning your activities as soon
as you receive your Programme Request Form.
As part of your check in when you arrive at KISC we
will run through all of your Programme bookings.
Activity Cancellation
Charges
During the year we have lots of groups wishing to do
activities and once an activity is booked, we have to
turn other Scouts away.
Occasionally, groups do not let us know of changes or
cancellations – leaving empty spaces and disappointed
Scouts. To help our guests get the most out of their
stay, we charge a fee of CHF 5.– per person, or half the
total price of an activity for any cancellation which does
not give us 48 hours notice. This applies to all Centre
activities advertised in KanderActive, including those
which are free of charge. There is no charge if a person
is sick or injured. If the activity is not run by the Centre
(e.g. ski lessons, curling, etc) the cancellation policy
varies from company to company and you may have to
pay in full. This is normal Swiss practice. Please plan,
and let us know of any changes as soon as possible.

suggested
activity weeks
If you are finding it hard to plan a week of winter
activities here at KISC, or are simply looking
for ideas, look no further than our suggested
activity weeks. On these pages you will see some
examples of how to fill your stay at KISC with
activities. These should give you some inspiration
of what activities to book. As you can see, it is
possible to do a week of just skiing, a week of
activities or a mix of both of these.
These are our suggestions, based on our
experience running activities. It is of course
possible to book what you like, to suit your needs.
We can either adjust one of our weeks or build a
new one from scratch. These weeks are planned
to run Sunday to Saturday, but a Winter Week can
run from any day of the week and last any number
of days, even for just a weekend!

Our standard Ski Weeks are primarily aimed at those

Guides will help you throughout the week to improve
your technique and to ski safely on the slopes, as well
as organising lunches and travel. As our Guides are
not professionals, first time skiers or boarders must
have lessons with the village ski school on the first
two days. We spend 3 days learning the basics on the
gentle pistes of Kandersteg before moving to the big

If you have never skied before we advise that you take
some lessons with the local Ski School, Snowstorm.
Their professional ski instructors will teach you the
basic skiing skills such as turning and stopping and,
as you progress, will teach you more advanced
techniques. Lessons are not just for beginners
either: anyone can take one to further their skills and
techniques. The 1.5h lessons are generally split into
two 45 min lessons, one in the morning and one in the
afternoon. This gives you time to practice what you
have learnt later, with your KISC guide. Only available
in Kandersteg at Oeschinensee. Must be booked
before October 31st to guarantee availabilty.

instructor can get you skiing confidently in no time, or
help you to lose bad habits and further improve your

can be added for CHF 10.- per person.
Ski Rental
We work closely with two specialist ski-rental shops
in Kandersteg; Grossen Sport and the Alpine Centre.
Both shops offer good quality, modern ski equipment
at a reasonable price. For large groups, our staff will
send you to Grossen Sport, but the Alpine Centre can
be better for smaller groups with younger scouts or
youths.
Ski rental can be ordered for both shops through the
Scout Centre at a discounted price. The prices are
slightly different for each shop and both have various
options for equipment rental – for full price lists please
visit our website.
Please note, with ski equipment, the adult/child prices
are determined by size – and what equipment the
shop fit to you – and not necessarily by age. Please
email us for more details on adult and child sizes.
Prices for ski sets include skis, boots and poles.
Grossen Sport has a wide variety of equipment and
can fit skis for large groups efficiently. During busy
periods, we may allocate a time for your group to go
to the rental shop.
