Sometimes it is enough of a deterrent to skip necessary screenings. Now a local laboratory has created a Patient’s Choice program at their four Valley labs – including a lab in the Town & Country center. The labs give those in need of tests as much as a 75 percent savings on costs at other facilities. Michael Piccirillo and Labnet, Inc. have provided services to physicians and outpatient laboratories for more than 30 years. Now, discouraged by rising costs and how little insurance relief trickles down to the consumer, Piccirillo and Labnet also provide testing services directly to the patient – at a fraction of the price. “Patients have always had the right to go anywhere for a lab testing and don’t even need a doctor’s referral. But the average pe r so n o f t e n doesn’t know this. Large laboratories can ch a rg e t h r e e times as much on common tests like thyroid profiles, HIV testing, estrogen and testosterone levels and lipid screenings. It’s a double whammy of overhead and the insurance system,” says Piccirillo. “People ask me how Labnet can do these tests for such a low cost, and I always ask why do the other labs have to charge so much?” he says. “It’s a system that ultimately hurts the patients if they can’t afford these tests. It’s time people stop getting taken advantage of.” Before this, all discounts and benefits went directly to physicians and insurance companies without being passed on to the consumer. Labnet gives the savings to the consumer directly with Patient’s Choice, and allows the public complete access to any test, any time at a much lower cost. SCP Chiropractic at 4859 N. 20th Street in the Town & Country Center provides the testing services for Labnet. The clinic is open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. every day. Patients do not need a doctor’s referral to have the tests done and can get the results typically in a few minutes. In addition to its “any test, any time” policy, Labnet can also provide on-site health screening’s with over 35 tests available (at selected sites), and results within minutes at the same affordable rates. Says Piccirillo, “We’re not cutting the doctor out of the process. We’re just saving the patient money on the initial screening. They still need to take it to a doctor for medical interpretation or if anything appears abnormal.” For more information about Labnet locations and pricing, visit LabnetAZ.com. v 4 Venice of the West The First CD Featuring the Gondoliers of Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Makes Its Debut For over two decades, memories have been created on the enchanting waterways of Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa. They are parts of life that come and go. Trends on the other hand seem to endure and can be seen repeating themselves especially when it comes to design history. From time to time, we’ve all fallen victim to fashion and design fads especially here in Arizona, i.e. the kokopeli or howling coyote not to mention, desert pastels! As defined by House Beautiful magazine, here are four key trends that have historical origins and continue to evolve into 2011. New Victorians: Was: influenced by Jules Verne’s, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea aka Steampunk manifesto. Considered smoky, dark and heavily layered. 2011: Less Goth, softer with the use of more color without losing its Victorian edge. The Accessorator: Looking back to design icons, and great lady decorators like, Sister Parish. The use of colorful design mixes without chintz. Cheerful patterns, color, the classic double gourd lamp. Looking ahead to 2011, Lilly Pulitzer the 1960s legend inspires a new home collection. For more information, visit www.Theaccessorator.com. Glam: Glam in 2010 was about more and more, sexy and theatrical, turned up color volume and piled on bling! Glam 2011, will look more natural. The Ruralists: 18th century influences, purity and sophistication. Axel Vervoordt, father of Belgian design influences American country and it’s never the same. A global country feel is born. Keywords: handmade and locavore. 2011 is all about outdoor rooms and homesteading in high style. The exhibit is free for members and is included with paid Desert Botanical Garden admission. These stunning macro photographs are wrapped in the visual and contextual embrace of a Renaissanceera illuminated manuscript that connects the human passion for science and art. By placing a sheet of black construction paper behind the cactus, he is able to isolate the subject, intensifying the composition of the richly hued and delicate flower. Dr. Schaefer, the President Emeritus of University of Arizona, is a conservationist and avid bird watcher who founded the Nature Conservancy in Arizona. He is a talented photographer, who with Ansel Adams founded the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson. He is the author of three popular books on photographic techniques, and his photographs have been featured in Arizona Highways, among other publications. The photographs in the exhibition are for sale, and the DBG will receive 15% of each sale while the show is installed. Also, additional photos are available for sale in the Garden Shop, as well as his book, A Desert Illuminated. A “Phoenix Point of Pride,” the Desert Botanical Garden is one of only a few botanical gardens accredited by the American Association of Museums. It is a privately funded, non-profit organization and depends on revenues from admissions and gift shop sales, as well as contributions from individuals and businesses to fund its programs of environmental education, plant conservation and research. The exhibit is free with admission to the Garden. Admission rates are $15 for adults, $13.50 for seniors, $7.50 for students with ID, $5 for children 3-12 yearsof-age; Garden members and children two years and younger are admitted free. And since the beginning, Chef Guerithault has remained the sole owner/operator of Vincent on Camelback. His wife and three sons have been by his side helping to run and expand the business since day one. “Only a handful of independent restaurants in the Valley have managed to stay in business for this long,” said Guerithault. “I am proud to be among them, and I am grateful to my family and loyal customers for all their support throughout the years.” On January 10th, 1986, Guerithault opened Vincent on Camelback at 3930 East Camelback Road in Phoenix, where it remains today. “There are only a handful of restaurants still here since then, and few have enjoyed the international success that has graced our operation,” Guerithault said. “We feel really blessed and know that it has been a combination of talent and good fortune that has made us unique in Arizona.” Over the years, Guerithault has expanded the restaurant’s reach with a successful catering operation; his perennially-popular outdoor Saturday Camelback Market, that runs from October to May in the restaurant’s parking lot; Vincent Market Bistro, a small casual bistro adjacent to the restaurant; Vincent’s Van Go, a corporate delivery service catering to local businesses; and most recently his mobile pizza oven, Vincent’s Van Go Pizza Catering, the first of its kind in Arizona. Family owned and operated by Guerithault, his wife and three sons, Vincent on Camelback is one of few Valley mainstays. Vincent on Camelback has been considered one of Phoenix’s culinary attractions for 25 years. The restaurant is open for dinner Monday through Saturday. For more information, call (602) 224-0225 or visit www.vincentsoncamelback.com. v Biltmore Lifestyles Long-Time Valley Restaurateur, Chef Vincent Guerithault: Keeping Up With The Times Vincent Guerithault can read Arizona diners. And when the award-winning chef saw foodies veering toward reasonably priced, casual comfort food, he knew he could meet that need on a unique level. While not abandoning his classics, he’s expanded his restaurant in a new direction including a new, more casual menu and a bundle of interior modifications including his latest concept, The Bleu Room, his take on an intimate French wine bar. “Dining trends indicate that people want a more relaxed dining experience,” said Guerithault. We’ve heard that from our customers, too.” As part of that effort, Chef Guerithault has added less expensive, more familiar French comfort food to the menu ranging in price from $28 to $36. Nationally acclaimed for arguably inventing French food married with a southwest twist, his new menu will still feature many customer favorites such as his lobster chimichangas, smoked salmon quesadillas and duck tamales. New menu items include starters like seafood quenelles with lobster sauce $14; foie gras with roasted pears and a balsamic reduction $18; and gratin of mussels $12. New entrée selections will include blanquette de veau with herb rice and spring vegetables $29; roasted gigot d’agneau with white beans $28; and lemon sole “paella style” $28. New desserts include apple tart tatin with vanilla ice cream; baba au rhum; vacherin with lavender ice cream; and cream of mango floating island for $9 each. But the most impressive change may be Chef Guerithault’s new Bleu Room that invites a deep breath and a sip of wine. It’s located just inside the restaurant and is similar to a French wine bar offering a variety of wines and cocktails, fruit and cheese plates, light hors d’oeuvres and small The Provence Room Biltmore Lifestyles Chef Guerithault with Slider Trio (Salmon, Beef, and Crab Cake) and Housemade Potato Chips meals. It also features flat screen televisions that air classic black and white movies, as well as food presentations, cooking techniques and on special occasions, sporting events. “We wanted to create a casual, neighborhood space where people could come to as a destination or before or after a movie, game or other event,” said Guerithault. “And the menu is unlike anything we’ve ever offered.” Some featured menu items include an assortment of three sliders (choose from shrimp, salmon, lamb, crab, beef or duck); assortment of three salads (choose from roasted cauliflower, lentils, ratatouille, roasted corn with goat cheese or asparagus); a trio of “croque” sandwiches (ham and brie, tomato, basil, mozzarella and pear, arugula and blue cheese); cheese gougeres, and housemade potato chips (chipotle, cumin, parmesan or plain). The Bleu Room will also feature a choice of Vincent’s famous desserts and a selection of special boutique wines. Most menu items will be between $3 and $8.50. The Bleu Room will be open weekdays beginning at 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. Added to Vincent on Camelback’s private dining room selection is his new Provence Room and if you’ve ever been to Provence, you’ll find the room familiar – with fabrics imported from Nice and touches that are reminiscent of the Cote d’Azur. The colorful room accommodates parties of 15 to 20 and, like the restaurant’s other private dining rooms, it offers custom events and menus in a unique decor. In January of 1986, Vincent Guerithault opened Vincent on Camelback, which remains at its original location. Over the years, Guerithault has expanded the restaurant’s reach with a successful catering operation; his perennially-popular outdoor Saturday Camelback Market, that runs from October to May in the restaurant’s parking lot; Vincent Market Bistro, a small casual bistro adjacent to the restaurant; Vincent’s Van Go, a corporate delivery service catering to local businesses; and most recently his mobile pizza oven, Vincent’s Van Go Pizza Catering, the first of its kind in Arizona. Vincent Guerithault on Camelback has been considered one of Phoenix’s culinary attractions for 25 years. Vincent’s on Camelback is located at 3930 East Camelback Road and is open for dinner Monday through Saturday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Vincent Market Bistro is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday for brunch from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Bleu Room opens at 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for happy hour. And beginning this month, you can forget about the Gecko at Sky Harbor, because Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is simplifying and streamlining its bus routes. Travelers no longer have to remember whether they parked in the Gecko, Roadrunner, or Jackrabbit parking lots, because the airport has renamed the routes to provide customers an easier travel experience. On the east side of the airport, travelers can take the bus for East Economy Uncovered Parking or the East Economy Garages. This change means that one bus route is now dedicated to the entire uncovered parking area, and one will be dedicated to the garages. This transition creates an express route between the East Economy garages and the terminals. In the past, buses serving the economy garages also picked up at various locations throughout the parking lot. The East Economy garages are the most convenient and offer the quickest access to Terminal 4, Sky Harbor’s busiest terminal. In addition, it is often easier to find a space in the Economy Garages than the uncovered Economy Parking Lot. The cost is only $2 more per day than the uncovered lot. The bus route for the West Economy Lot has been changed from the Jackrabbit route to West Economy Lot. Says Sky Harbor’s Assistant Aviation Director Carl Newman, “The changes in the bus routes will result in enhanced customer service for travelers and shorter bus rides at America’s Friendliest Airport.” Additional information about Sky Harbor’s parking amenities is available at skyharbor.com. v 16 Smart Ways to Select and Save on Heating and Cooling By Camille Sullivan, Realty Executives When you look at expenses in the home, about fifty percent of the annual utility bill goes to heating and cooling. So the number one appliance that can save both energy and money is a high efficiency heat pump. A new high efficiency heat pump unit provides almost instant savings. Replacing an old 10 seer unit with a new 15 seer unit can save approximately 35 percent in air conditioning costs for a summer. The new unit is also more capable of removing moisture from the house and making it more comfortable. Size does matter. Homeowners need to make sure the new air conditioning unit is the right size for the home. Studies have been done in Arizona that shows air conditioners are typically oversized. If a house calls for a 4 ton unit, a 4.5 or 5 ton unit is installed. To make sure you buy the right size heat pump, have a contractor perform load calculations. This software program measures everything in the house, such as glass, insulation, orientation, number of walls, etc. Bigger is not better when it comes to air conditioning units. Before a new heat pump is installed, make sure the contractor verifies that the ducts are in good condition. Duct work is always leaky and sometimes as much as 30 percent of cool air escapes from the house. Ten percent leakage or less is ideal. Lastly, setting the thermostat up two or three degrees when you leave for the day will save two or three percent for that time period. v Real Estate Statistics, January 15th, 2011 Homes for Sale 106 Lots 1 Pending Sales 11 Solds 12-11-10 to 1-15-11 7 Sold YTD 104 Pending Sales By Subdivision.. About Gunther von Hagens’ Body Worlds Dr. Gunther von Hagens invented the Plastination technique in 1977, in an effort to improve the education of medical students. The organs and whole-body plastinates were derived from generous body donors, individuals who designated that upon their death their bodies could be used for educational purposes in the Body Worlds exhibitions. More than 12,000 donors have bequeathed their bodies to Dr. von Hagens’ Institute for Plastination in Heidelberg, Germany. The mission of Arizona Science Center is to inspire, educate and entertain people of all ages about science. The center, located at 600 East Washington Street in downtown Phoenix, features more than 300 hands-on exhibits, live demonstrations, the state-of-the-art Dorrance Planetarium and a five-story IMAX® theater.
