Playlust for Ron Orp Zurich Lookbook 2o1o WELCOME TO ZURICH Lookbook 2o1o This year, our Zurich style-journal catches now looks at wow events like fashion shows and art openings. We took trips to unusual locations, and checked out new fashion hotspot Viadukt. Along the way, we bumped into a few celebrities and paid visits to a couple of stylish homes. For those of you who like a good read too, we’ve added micro-interviews. Find out about a fine bunch of young creatives who are taking Zurich’s fashion scene out of its provincial taste of prosecco & cervelat (a popular sausage) to international acclaim. And we caught up with Swiss it-model (and coverboy of the Face Hunter book) Affa Osman to talk fashion, model moments, and Zurich’s cool-factor. Yvan Rodic / The Face Hunter How to be a good fashion slave according to FASHIONSLAVE: 1. Be a sophisticated individual who enjoys a conscious lifestyle, dare to be experimental, but with taste, and don’t be too serious, take fashion with a sense of humour. 2. Impossible? Such a thing doesn’t exist. 3. Collaborate, move on and expand together, be open minded, help create a new fair world, support creative designers, and think modern – act against slavery in sweat shops. 4. Network, create your own trends, look outside the box, love fashion, style, art, and music, stay true to yourself. Well, be a part of everything. Sleep well, eat healthily, calm down, and stay cool. 5. Treat every other fashion slave with respect, life’s short, get dressed, thank you. Next, he landed the cover of the Face Hunter book. NOW Affaʼs modelling career is taking off in Berlin. We met up in Zurich to talk model moments, rock’n’roll, and Zurich’s cool factor. Is it true you bumped into Kate Moss yesterday? Yes, in Oranienstrasse. Did she recognise you? Yeah. From a distance she screamed: «Affaaa is it you?» Now we’re best friends for evermore. Ok, let’s get real. Tell us briefly what it was like one year ago when Yvan Rodic, aka The Face Hunter, pointed his lens at you during AW 10 Mens Fashion Week in Paris. At the time, I didn’t know who was standing in front of me. He took a few pictures. After a couple of months, a Paris friend told me Yvan Rodic had been looking for me at Paris Fashion Week. Next thing, I got a message from Yvan saying he wanted me on the cover of his book. An African immigrant kid growing up in a Swiss village goes It-model in Berlin. Sounds like the modern version of Heidi, the downto-earth and patent Swiss mountain girl. (laughs) Nice such surreal stories still exist today. But I enjoy every moment. I’m very lucky to get to know new people every day and earn a living from modelling. It feels good to realise you’re not at the wrong place. Coverboy: Affa Osman / Option Photo: Play Hunter / Playlust Hair & Make-up: Kim Bischofberger Affa wears: T-Shirt by Boris Bidjan Saberi, model’s own What do you like in Berlin? Berlin is easy. No stress, it doesn’t matter if you go out in tracksuit bottoms or in an expensive Rick Owens outfit. Not so sleepy like other cities. What’s more, it’s central, Paris, London and Zurich are easy to reach. What music are you listening to? Royal Crookers Feat. Roisin Murphy Favourite food? Cornflakes in champagne and cotton balls dipped in orange juice. Sure, that’s the cliché. But seriously, has it ever happened to you one of those hyped plus-size models snapped your job away? I’ve never come across them at castings. I think plus-size and people models were a one-issue wonder. A PR-stunt, nothing else. Clients still demand conventional models. Somehow, I don’t believe that’s going to change anytime soon. What are your next targets as a model? Berlin Fashion Week. Get a good book together. In winter, Paris Fashion Week. What is it actually like when you realise a modelling job is shit or the photographer sucks? Well, in that case you try to make the best out of the situation, and if possible, to push things into a good direction. But sometimes, this job can be a real pain in the ass. You must be disciplined and sweat it out. Anyway, turning up with a fuckmeattitude is not going to help. I often have the impression in Switzerland nothing works without blood, sweat and tears. Success is hard work. Even in fashion. People are afraid of taking risks. But in fashion, nothing works without risks. Whatever happened to the term cool in Zurich? You tell me. Over here, people so ostentatiously wear hip labels like Vibskov and Acne, but say: «Oh, I completely forgot what designer it’s from.» People in Zurich try so hard to be cool. The whole point about being cool is to make it look effortless. You can always tell if people spent five hours in front of the mirror, can’t you. Another thing that’s missing in Zurich is humour. Even Karl Lagerfeld has a sense of humour. And serenity. It’s ok, simply to be. Ideally, to be at ease with yourself. C’mon, during the shows in the fashion capitals, we have so much fun, then I meet these people and think: whatever happened to rock’n’roll? Where is a good place to bump into rock’n’roll? London, at a home party where everyone’s easy and nobody worries about whether their Chanel bag gets dirty. Or if it’s ok to dance to Destiny’s Child. You seem such a picture of serenity. Has it got to do with your name which in Ethiopean means «he who forgives easily»? Maybe. Perhaps it is also the mix of mentalities. Actually, I pick all the positive traits from Ethiopia, Yemen, and Switzerland. Which is to say, without a sense of serenity you’ll end up a mental wreck in the fashion business, so you’d better take things easy. Are you a role model? It’s nice when people tell me so. But whether I’m a good one, I don’t know. Are you proud to be Swiss? Absolutely. But I’m also proud of my Ethiopian, and Yemenite roots. I’m always thrilled when I meet Swiss people abroad. If they turn out to be from Berne, I’m over the moon. Read interview in German on playlust.net. April 19, Bellevue: Sechseläuten April 28, Letten Lido: A Taste Of Summer April 29: Ikou Tschüss Popup-Store Opening Feat. I’m an aspiring photographer and blogger who will be starting the photography class at Zurich University of the Arts this autumn. If you were a garment which one would that be: A shirt. I like the formality a shirt represents, but at the same time you are able to really dress it down and combine it in many many ways. Name three perfect menswear summer essentials: Straw hat, chinos and a pair of Oxfords. Your dream dinner date: Karl Lagerfeld. I’m not picking him based on his achievements in the fashion industry but rather because he has met so many interesting people and witnessed so many moments during his life that he must have a lot to tell, plus he seems to be damn smart. The place for the dinner would be up to him. Style is: Essentially various garments combined, which make a certain statement about who you are and your personality. Happiness is: Being able to do what I want and live from it. Pascal takes an eyeful of 9 Scenes of Ordinary Murders by Angela Liosi at Ehegraben project space, and a walk down Seilergraben.
