Leadership Class of 2013-2014 posing with a “Steel Dinosaur” created by Benton & Sons Stainless Steel Fabrications. Leadership Wayne This year’s class of 17 participants has been very busy. They have taken on the challenge of renovating the indoor and outdoor break areas for the employees at Wayne Opportunity Center. We are proud to announce that so far they have raised over $10,000 in funds for the project! Regents organizing this year’s Business & Industry Day took a different approach and started the day at the STEM lab at Norwayne Middle School with some hands on activities. The idea was to highlight the educational requirements for Wayne County’s workforce and then to progress throughout the day showing the need for those skills within our businesses. The class then visited Benton & Sons where they were briefed on the process of metal fabrication. While at Benton and Sons, the class was shown a project where they are building a dinosaur out of metal. The next stop was the Wayne County Development Alliance for lunch and a presentation on economic development from the staff. The last stop of the day was Mission Foods for a tour of the facility where the class learned how tortilla products are manufactured. There are many well-documented benefits to our communities and to each of us to choosing local, independently owned businesses. We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally and so we merely ask you to Think Local FIRST! Top Ten Reasons to Think LOCAL 1. Buy Local -- Support yourself: Studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than nationally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. Case studies show that locally owned businesses generate a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and our tax base. 2. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. 3. Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust 4. Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation. 5. Create more jobs for residents: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community. They provide the most jobs to residents. 6. Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. 7. Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. 9. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but, on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. 10. Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. Junior Leadership students visit Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in an effort to become more familiar with the professional organizations in the local area, so that they may be exposed to opportunities in Wayne County. Junior Leadership This month’s class day was focused on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The visit included a tour of the 916th Air Refueling Wing ramp and KC-135R Stratotanker, 4th Security Forces Squadron Dog Kennels, 4th Fighter Wing Fire Department, and a demonstration of the KC-135R Stratotanker simulator. “The students enjoyed every aspect of the tour...especially the simulator”, said committee member Lou Cook. The group was treated to a discussion from Senior MSgt. Donna Lorenz, 916th logistics plans superintendent, who retires later this year after more than 30 years of service in the Air Force. "In my final year, it's important that I affect positive change," said Lorenz. "Speaking with the group was a great opportunity for me to share my passion for leadership and reflect on the things I've learned." “The group was very receptive and grateful for the experience,” said Cook, adding that the visit definitely sparked their interest in what happens here on base. "They were very vocal and enthusiastic about what all they enjoyed and how much they had learned," said Cook. "The impression you have made on these youngsters lasts a lifetime." The Junior Leadership program is open to all juniors who attend public, private, or parochial schools located in Wayne County.
