Individual Care in Physical Therapy
By Stevie Williams, Director of Community Relations
Functional decline in older adults can result in loss of
independence. This functional decline can be a result of a
sedentary lifestyle in retirement: sitting more often, not
getting out of the house as much or having pain while
moving. Physical therapy can help restore function and
improve mobility for seniors.
Physical therapists are educated and skilled in treatment
of all types. Physical therapists examine patients and
develop a plan of care that promotes movement, reduces
pain and restores function. Common reasons for physical
therapy include: chronic weakness, joint pain, difficulty in
walking, neck and back pain, arthritis and dizziness.
Once a physical therapy assessment has been completed,
a plan of care is established. At Elder Care, all physical
therapy appointments are one-on-one with your therapist,
allowing for individual care in treatment. This one-on-one
attention also allows for more time to explain the process
of the therapy.
After the physical therapy treatment plan is completed,
continued exercise and an active lifestyle is important in
optimizing health among seniors aging with chronic conditions. Elder Care Physical Therapy offers an After Care program with two options for exercise: Independent Aftercare and Assisted Aftercare.
Independent Aftercare is designed to help maintain the
benefits gained through skilled physical therapy at Elder
Care. This program does not include direct supervision or
assistance and may be completed at the convenience of
the individual.
Assisted Aftercare is designed to be a seamless transition
from skilled physical therapy to an ongoing personalized
exercise program with the assistance of a trained staff
member in a one-on-one environment.
The physical therapy department at Elder Care specializes
in administering individualized care in a compassionate
environment. We dedicate ourselves to providing highquality skilled services to manage multiple medical conditions, and the impairments that accompany these conditions. We would love to make a positive difference in your
life. You can contact us directly at 918-766-0391 or visit

How do we help loved ones find a sense of purpose and
meaning when it may be tough for them to just physically
get through the day? When seniors have difficulty physically or cognitively, they often feel isolated and bored.

Find Your Sense of Purpose
By Stevie Williams, Director of Community Relations
A sense of purpose can provide
happiness and longevity in life. But
what is your sense of purpose and
how can you find it?
A sense of purpose is your reason
for getting up in the morning. It is
what keeps you going and makes
you happy.
Richard Leider, author of “The Power of Purpose” says that Purpose =
gifts + passions + values. Your gifts
are what make you happy, not necessarily just your talents. Passions
are what you love to do or your
interests. Values are tied to your
beliefs.
Your sense of purpose changes throughout your life. As a student, employee or parent,
your motivation is much different during each of those stages in your life. As a retired
person, you may need to rediscover your gifts and passions in order to learn what brings
you happiness in your new lifestyle. You might discover that volunteering brings you joy
and helping others gets you out of bed each morning with a happy heart. Or maybe a
new found artistic talent keeps your creative side sparked each day. Some seniors enjoy
games and group activities, such as playing bridge or participating in a fitness class or
singing in a choir. During retirement, there are opportunities to travel or learn a new
hobby. Golden Opportunities at Elder Care provides education and fitness classes, social
events and day trips that bring seniors together for enjoyment and rejuvenation.
There may be a time in your life that being a caregiver might become your purpose. But
then what to do once your loved one passes or situations change? The caregiver may
soon realize that a new sense of purpose must be discovered in order to find involvement
and happiness. Programs like Elder Care's DayBreak Adult Day Health might be beneficial
where participants can come spend the day with others in a social setting while taking
part in group activities, fitness, art and music.
Throughout these different stages in your life, a sense of purpose still provides the same
benefits: Improves your physical health, Lengthens your life and Makes you happier. In
the book Blue Zones, author Dan Buettner talks about the longest living people in different parts of the world. They all shared nine of the same traits, one of which is a sense of
purpose. Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy according to the Blue Zones study.
If you are looking for your sense of purpose, take some time to reflect on what you
would like to contribute to the world and what brings you joy. The discovery may take
some trial and error to find out what brings you fulfillment. But once you find that sense
of purpose, your days will begin with a clear focus and energy that result in happiness.

Planning for the Future
By Deirdre McArdle, Director of Development
Elder Care is pleased to announce that we have been
selected to participate in the Planned Giving Partnership
Program offered through Bartlesville Community Foundation. This allows us the opportunity to provide you with
professional guidance and assistance if you desire to make
a commitment to our mission through planned gifts such
as wills, trusts, gift annuities, etc.
The great news is that many of these strategies can be
customized to help you achieve your family, financial, and
charitable goals, while providing tax benefits. This service
is provided at no charge.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment
until it becomes a memory.” - Dr. Seuss
We are all capable of getting in a slump and throwing the
not so glamorous pity party from time to time. However,
when the party is over it's time to refocus and spring into
action.
Yes, I said “spring” - just that word alone brings thoughts
of trees budding, birds singing, and more beautiful sunlight. I realize that you may have some very serious challenges going on in your life at this time, however I can
promise you that taking up every moment of time you
have dwelling on the unknown and every possible negative outcome one can imagine will only help you to succeed at one thing! What’s that you ask? I will tell you, you

One of my
favorite books by Dr. Seuss is; “Oh the Places You'll Go”!
