And we are therefore forward-thinking with a consumer-oriented focus, always working on new technologies and innovative varieties. We invariably try and add value to the supply chain for growers, processors, retailers and consumers by providing our precious seeds. Syngenta does not develop a variety or technology by itself, and we greatly value close collaboration with our growers. It is definitely our aim to allow our growers to benefit from our experience in growing tomatoes. So, this year too you can count on high-productivity tomatoes which are easy to grow, harvest, clean, process and package. Ongoing development Syngenta conducts extensive market research into expectations and preferences. We develop tomato varieties with strong agronomic properties in terms of resistance and flexibility. Obviously, we ensure extensive testing of all our varieties, among other things, at the testing stations in our important cultivation areas. It has to be in line with the needs from the crop technics, in combination with the greenhouse technic. For this reason, Syngenta invest in the development of different rootstocks. This investment in research creates the optimal winning combination rootstock-hybrid. Rootstocks are mainly used to secure the plant stress management. In these cases the growers are searching for a consistent and efficient growth of the plant. In fact we can translate in secure the consistency of root growth, to keep the plant- head in consistent development. Growth in this case is finding the optimal balance between vegetation volume and plant power. With too high vegetation the plant becomes inefficient with the energy balance, creates too high plant body mass and develops lower fruit mass and less flavour. As in a lot of situations, the good balance is crucial. We look for a plant that is able to keep a consistency, and anticipate a part against the conditional environments. In this case the rootstock is the crucial part to anticipate, there are 3 different crucial factors to take into account for the right combination rootstock; 1) the greenhouse type, 2) the crop technic and seasonal plan, 3) and the scion character. The rootstock will support the energy factor, to balance the plant. 22 NEW Kardia Advantages For the grower For traders and consumers • Develops very good generative plants Hybrids can create high vegetation, Kardia keeps this in balance having better development of the generative parts, flowers and fruits. In trials we have discovered that best practice is greenhouses with lower radiation such as diffused glass for hybrids with high leaf volume habits. • Does not have a high level of leaf vegetation • Good balance between generative and vegetative parts, allowing a good power balance for the plant • Delivers a good consistency of development • Keep very good uniformity between the plants to maximise productivity Arnold Advantages For the grower • Very useful in case of later sowing date (after December 1st) • Gives a better start for late sowings as has a more balanced plant, creates less vegetation. Develops the generative part flowers/clusters very well • Arnold creates high vegetation/ leaf volume as it is a hybrid • Gives a very good end crop in the Autumn 23 Syngenta’s commitment to sustainable growth “Taking biological pest control to a higher level” did not work out perfectly in the last season. "The biological factor did not start properly last year, there was a shortage of Macrolophus, and we did not manage to remain below the damage threshold all down the line." Tomato grower Bart van den Bosch from Berkel en Rodenrijs: “This is a rigorous strategy that is highly motivating.” Bart participates in the Syngenta pilot scheme in which comprehensive biological pest control methods are offered to the growers in a single package. Says Bart: “I now buy a single solution, rather than several boxes of biological pest control agents.” These are good reasons for the grower from Rijkevorsel to adopt a different strategy for this season. The Syngenta strategy, combined with Benfried monitoring and logistics, has clearly proved to be effective. "A very purposeful approach is key. Macrolophus was deployed earlier and on a larger scale, there is a good approach for nutrition and follow-up, and we ourselves have ensured much closer monitoring. And that is effective." An early start, proper follow-up, close monitoring and (re) acting quickly. Kris Goen, Technical & Solutions Manager at Syngenta, says that this is the basis of the strategy for integrated pest control that Syngenta has developed for tomato cultivation. "In recent years we have put a lot of energy into tests to improve the biological approach in tomatoes, and this season an improved strategy will be tested on a large scale with a number of commercial businesses." Syngenta supplies to participating growers a comprehensive package for integrated pest control throughout the growing season, i.e. a basic package of pest control agents that is deployed in a preventive manner. The most important aspect of the approach is that Syngenta offers the grower a solution, rather than a product. "We definitely would not like to see growers committing to the biological approach too late, or not adequately, just to save costs. We offer a vigorous system." Snack tomatoes Ludo van Rompaey from Rijkevorsel: "You want to grow snack tomatoes with an extra emphasis on cleanliness." Next to his Merlice crop, this grower also operates a 1.7 ha plot with Syngenta's Sweetelle. "These are sweet little tomatoes that children love to eat as an easy snack. And since these are small fruits, there is a far larger risk of residue." In short, Van Rompaey wants to operate as biologically as possible, which Fewer worries Innovation and sustainability are key values for Bart van den Bosch, a tomato grower who, together with his brother and sister, runs a 26 ha beef tomato business. The business is a pioneer in geothermal energy but it also strives for sustainable innovation in biological pest control. "We have known years when we did not need any chemical pest control agents whatsoever. However, there were also years when we had to intervene with biological pest control. What we want is a strategy for biological pest control using the best available expertise. And it seems that Syngenta offers us just that, without huge risks to our crops." The Syngenta strategy relieves Van den Bosch from a great deal of worry. "If anything goes wrong, we ourselves are right on top of it. We maintain intensive contacts both with Syngenta and the Van Iperen company, who provide support and delivery. If there is an alert, they take action straightaway." The greatest added value that the Syngenta strategy brings is that a solid biological basis is built right from the start of any culture. Commitment to the biological approach Syngenta uses these pilots to take a big step towards growing vegetables in a sustainable and innovative way. Goen says that the objective is the development of a comprehensive package: high quality varieties on sound rootstocks, combined with a sustainable integrated strategy. "We at Syngenta want to take a major step forward by deploying this approach." 24 Bioline tomato products BeeLine • Ongoing improvement in design of bumblebee nests based upon practical use • Assassin bug to fight several types of spider mites and russet mites including the tomato gall mite • No maintenance required due to feeding system and easy-tocontrol locking system • Packaging designed to meet weeks of emerging new assassin bugs MacroLine p • Also at lower temperatures, allowing an early introduction in the season if required • The basic product in biological pest control of whiteflies, spider mites, Tuta absoluta, leaf miner flies, larvae, aphids etc. •V ery active and mobile assassin bugs that multiply quickly in greenhouses •A dditional feeding with Bugfood E for a guaranteed, very fast build-up in population •P ackaging includes nutrition facility and ensures proper humidity • NIMF packaging for local spider mite control • For clearing a massive volume of spider mites in a short time • An assassin bug that develops easily, also in spider mite colonies • Available in various packs ZENTINEL® 45 • A new generation of pheromone dispensers • New technology for consistent and uniform dispersion of pheromone for 45 days • Protein-rich nutrition source for additional feeding of Macrolophus after its introduction • High-quality nutrition source for a fast and certain development of Macrolophus • Packaging designed to ensure easy dispersion EncarLine f • Encarsia formosa parasitic wasp, indispensable for the control of glasshouse whitefly • High hatch rates, very good search behaviour • Easy handling of cards to facilitate fast introduction EretLine e • Eretmocerus eremicus wasp to parasitize greenhouse whitefly as well as Bemisia •H ighly efficient at high temperatures and at temperature fluctuations • Innovative blister pack for higher hatch rates and better results DigLine i • Diglyphus isaea parasitic wasp, specialised in fighting leaf miner fly larvae • Is capable of quickly stopping ongoing infestation due to host nutrition and laying large numbers of eggs • Package includes a nutrition and moisture source • A guarantee for fast detection of Tuta absoluta, long before damage becomes visible in the crop AphiLine e • Aphidius ervi parasitic wasp to fight the most common aphids in tomatoes • Ideally suited for preventive and curative fighting of aphids • Only low dosage required for a preventive approach AphidoLine aa • A gall mite that lays its eggs in the vicinity of aphid colonies • For fighting all kinds of aphids • Very good search behaviour • Available in tubes or handy blister packs 25 Crop programme January BeeLine February March April May June < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < Hommels EncarLine f < < < < < < EretLine e MacroLine p < < < < < < < < < < < < < < < Witte vlieg DigLine i < < < < < Mineervlieg Pest < < < < < < < < < < < MacroLine p < < AphidoLine aa < < < < < < < < Spintmijten < AphiLine e Bladluizen MacroLine p Zentinel 45 < < < < < < Tuta Absoluta < < < Disease Tomatengalmijt Botrytis Meeldauw This crop programme provides guidelines and supports growers in their decision-making.
