Editor’s MESSAGE
In this issue, the audited results of DRB-HICOM for fiscal
year ended 31 March 2010 show the success of the Group’s
diverse business interests.
As the Group moves forward, its services sector is being
quickly expanded with the setting up of the International
College of Automotive (ICAM). The college is not merely
to serve the interests of the Group but more to nurture a
skilled and knowledgeable technical workforce that will
promote the automotive industry at the national and
international levels.
The ICAM also supports our national aspirations
through education, as the Group is keenly aware of the
need to develop the nation’s human capital to maintain a
competitive edge.
In line with our corporate responsibility objectives, we
have also contributed towards the establishment and
development of the Albukhary International University
(AIU). The AIU complements the ICAM by providing a
potential stream of graduates to take on executive positions
in DRB-HICOM’s non-auto core businesses.
The end results create access to R&D facilities to enhance
existing businesses as well as to venture into emerging areas
such as green technology and sustainable development.
In other news, the Board of Directors and senior
management have been rather active in visiting the
Albukhary Complex in Kedah, the Islamic Arts Museum
Malaysia and the New Straits Times office.

DRB-HICOM Berhad wants
to uplift the whole value chain
of the auto industry.
In a three-pronged approach, the new
International College of Automotive
(ICAM) is its initiative to address the gap of
skilled personnel, turn Pekan into a regional
automotive knowledge hub and drive the
national auto industry forward.
“It’s time for the Group to contribute and
prepare the country for the auto industry,”
said YBhg Dato’ Lukman Ibrahim, Group
Chief Financial Officer, DRB-HICOM
Berhad, about the shortage of skilled and
knowledgeable automotive staff.
“We can’t rely on unskilled foreign
labour. We must move up the ladder in
order to bring in global OEMs, vehicle
manufacturers and other fields of the auto
industry. It’s a complex process.”
With the tagline
“Powering

ICAM intends
to realise the
aspirations of
individuals, the
Group and the

The All-New
Honda Freed
T
he All-New Freed was unveiled
recently by Honda Malaysia
Managing Director and Chief
Executive Officer, Encik Toru
Takahashi, witnessed by Encik Yukihiro
Aoshima, President Director of Honda
Prospect Motor (HPM), Jakarta, Indonesia,
where it is manufactured. Present as well was
Encik Isao Ando, Project Leader of the AllNew Freed.
Touted as a smart choice that is practical,
performance oriented and stylish, the Freed
is targeted at professional urbanites with
young families.
Encik Isao Ando said that the Freed’s
aerodynamic triangular-shaped front is
a powerful one-motion silhouette that
highlights an energetic sharp character
line. According to him, the square-shaped
cabin maximises the use of space for
greater comfort.
An urban mover, the premium compact
MPV has numerous notable features such
as dual automatic sliding doors, flat floor
design and a walk-through cabin.
Its one-step low floor and a grip assist help the
elderly and children step up and down easily.
The foldable third row seats allow for extra
loading capacity when needed. The Freed
seats up to seven people comfortably. For
smaller families, it is a joy ride for four people,
along with four golf bags, or equipment and
rations for an outdoor trip, or even three
pieces of large baggage in the third row. The
low tailgate opening makes cargo loading
and unloading easy.
Its ample storage space includes centre tray,
glove compartment, door pockets, backseat
hook and seven cup holders spread out
conveniently in easy to locate places.
Under its hood, the Freed houses the
renowned 1.5L i-VTEC engine capable of
producing 118PS at 6600rpm for maximum
power and 146 Nm at 4800rpm for
maximum torque. Its 4-cylinder, 16 valve
SOHC engine is one of the better known
technologies in the industry and the i-VTEC
engine provides perfect balance between
power and fuel economy.
The engine is fitted with ecological solutions
such as an airflow meter and linear air fuel
ratio sensor as part of the Honda mission
to reduce its product’s impact on the
environment. It also meets the EURO 4
emission standards.
The Freed’s 5-speed automatic transmission
(5AT) and drive-by-wire (DBW) torque
control system guarantee a smoother ride.
In the safety aspect, the Freed scores six stars
in the JNCAP crash tests for both driver and
passengers. The proprietary G-Force Control
Technology (G-CON) helps disperse the
crash impact across the body frame while the
advanced compatibility engineering (ACE)
gives better crash compatibility with other
cars, thus minimising injury.
Other safety features in the Freed are ABS
(Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electrical
Brake-force Distribution), BA (Brake Assist)
and Grade Logic Control embedded in the
Shift-Hold Control. The latter reduces the
shift of extra transmission while cornering.

Uni.Asia Life’s staff with the t-shirts and non-woven bags
Responsibility
The Uni.Asia Life employees at the launch
CR Initiatives by Uni.Asia Life
U
ni.Asia Life kick started its corporate responsibility
initiatives for the environment and employee during the
2010/11 financial year by launching an environmentally
friendly non-woven bag and three corporate t-shirts for
the staff on 7 April 2010.
Both the non-woven bag and t-shirts carry Uni.Asia Life’s corporate
statements My Family, My Health and My Future. They describe
the different types of products offered by the company aimed at
providing peace of mind due to uncertainties with regard to family,
health and the future.
Each staff member received the three different t-shirts and three nonwoven bags with the statements. To make the corporate responsibility
initiative successful, all of them are required to wear the t-shirts on Fridays
and use the non-woven bags when doing their grocery shopping.
The use of the environmentally friendly non-woven bags will
be extended in phases as Uni.Asia Life embarks on its corporate
responsibility initiatives. The bags will be distributed at hypermarkets
during non-plastic bag day and to members of the Kelab Kewangan
Pelajar (KKPS) under the School Adoption Program, another
corporate responsibility initiative undertaken by Uni.Asia Life.

Glenmarie Golf
& Country Club
Premier destination for the sporting life
S
ince 1993, Glenmarie Golf
& Country Club (GGCC)
has become a top golf club in
Malaysia for its management is
constantly improving and upgrading both
its championship courses and clubhouse
premises to keep up with the times.
GGCC is also known for its tip-top
maintenance as owner DRB-HICOM
Group ensures that the best and most
advanced machinery are used. For instance,
the drainage system is designed in such a
way that play can continue right after heavy
rainfall.
It boasts two world-class 18-hole par 72 golf
courses originally designed by American
Max Wexler who sculpted them according
to its natural contours. Two interconnecting
lakes, waterfalls, fountains and bridges
means that water hazards abound to test
every golfer’s skills. Buggies are required
for play due to the lengths of both fairways
which reward good shots.
Garden Course
As its name aptly implies, the 6,404 metre
Garden Course is lush and verdant with trees,
palms and flowering shrubs. The greens and
surrounding landscape have been renovated
to enhance its look and the bunkers
reshaped to make it more intimidating
for members and guests alike. Fully lit for
night golfing, it is highly popular for after
office hour play by otherwise busy people
who are unable to tee off in the daytime.
Club facilities
New Valley Course
The scenic New Valley Course lined with
pine trees along its 6,325 metre length was
revamped by Ted Parslow. Closed two years
for its RM13 million upgrading, the 18-hole
layout now has more uphill and downhill
features, doglegs, and tee boxes and fairways
reshaped with new bunker challenges. The
back nine holes are revitalised with mini
verde grass making the green speed a thrill
for many players.

The water element still plays a major role in
this course which runs over valleys and hills
to add to its difficulty. Its signature hole is
the 155-metre, par 3, Number Six.
Both courses use Bermuda Tifway 419 on
the fairways while the greens have Bermuda
Tifdwarf grass.
