Community Service: Autism Walk
by Jen Wilson and Charley Eschenbrenner
On Sunday, October 10th, SPSO
members, along with some of
their family members and
friends, participated in
Columbus' Walk Now for Autism
Speaks at Value City Arena at the
Jerome Schottenstein Center on
Ohio State's campus. It was a
beautiful, sunny morning and a
perfect day for the walk. All
together, 425 teams and 18,500
individuals turned out to
participate in the walk and the
Autism Speaks organization was
able to raise $557,405.00
towards autism research. Thanks
to everyone for your donations
and participation!
With hope, SPSO will continue
to participate in these events and
give back to our community.

Shannon Sternberg (1st year student):
As I write this newsletter submission,
allow me to describe my surroundings: my
house is a complete disaster area, the dog
is full of mats, and there is no real food to
speak of gracing my cupboards. Kids are
asleep, I am just getting started. In lieu of
cooking and cleaning, I choose to spend
quality time with them before bed (don’t
worry, the lady that looks after them is an
Italian mama, they are very well fed-just
not by me lately!). I am in my usual spot
here in the living room, glued to my
laptop. The couch and floor all around me
littered with textbooks, papers, sticky
notes, pens, highlighters, articles, pocket
DSM-IV. I have barricaded myself into this
spot with remnants of Academia-the
School Psych kind. Looming ahead are the
fast approaching due dates of Dr. Radliff’s
research paper (dun dun dun), Dr.
Miranda’s Cultural Immersion Experience
(still haven’t figured out what I am doing!),
and Dr. Joseph’s group paper (so kind of
her to move the due date!). Don’t even
get me started on the zillion pages of
reading that have yet to be tended to.
Sleep? What is that? T.V.? Surely you jest!
All bellyaching aside, I have never been
happier. Loving every minute, and feeling
so fortunate for this amazing opportunity
to do what I love and love what I do. To
top it all off, I am embraced and supported
daily by a cohort and professors who I am
growing to think of as family. Yes, I am a
first year School Psych student. I say it
loud, and I say it proud.

practicum. Oh, and by the way, you will

Kaitlyn Nasci (3rd-year EdS student):
As a new intern in Columbus City
Schools, my advice to others would be to
ASK QUESTIONS! I am finding that
practicing school psychologists are eager
to help foster the professional
development of recent graduates such as
myself. We are so fortunate to have so
many resources at our disposal. Our
district has over 60 school psychologists,
and many who specialize in particular
areas. When I have questions, the
psychologists go above and beyond helping
out. For example, I asked a colleague if he
had any advice for running a social skills
group with 1st grade boys, and I not only
received great advice, but an entire kit of
materials to borrow for my group. When
you ask a question at Neil Avenue,
somebody is always there to offer their
insights, and it has been invaluable as a
learning experience. One of the other
most significant things that I am learning is
that with good organization, you can apply
established methods/strategies to various
consultations or interventions... making
your performance more effective and
efficient. No sense in re-inventing the
wheel!

I would have to say that the best thing
about your 4th year as a doc student is
that you start to see the light at the end
of the tunnel. I am looking forward to
working on my dissertation this year and
preparing for internship next year.

2011 Annual Convention. The NASP 2011
Annual Convention, the world's largest and
most important gathering of school
psychologists, offers you professional excellence
at its best. Expand your knowledge, improve
your skills, and connect with peers. The
keynote address will be given by Linda DarlingHammond, PhD, a leading expert in the areas of
school reform, teacher quality and educational
equity. Convention will be held February 22–25
in San Francisco at Hilton San Francisco Union
Square.

SASP is coming to OSU!

We are happy to announce that OSU
will have a Student Affiliates in School
Psychology (SASP) chapter beginning
this year! SASP will be combined with
our current student organization to
form SPSO/SASP, and it will serve as a
local chapter of the national parent
organization under the American
Psychological Association (APA),
Division 16. The SPSO/SASP group will
continue its allegiance with the
National Association of School
Psychologists (NASP) as well. I will
serve as the SASP/APA representative
for our student organization and Dr.
Radliff will serve as our faculty sponsor.
WE ARE HAPPY TO
ANNOUNCE THAT OSU WILL
HAVE A SASP CHAPTER
BEGINNING THIS YEAR!
The affiliation with SASP and APA,
Division 16 will give our existing
student organization a niche for
doctoral students and provide all
students with additional opportunities
to publish, network, and share their
concerns as part of a national student
organization. Every student in the
school psychology program is strongly
encouraged to join SASP if you are not
already a member. Membership is free
and if you sign up this year, you will
receive a one-year free membership to
APA, Division 16 as well. I will be
sending more details soon regarding
membership, publication opportunities,
and upcoming SASP and APA events! If
you have any questions in the
