The MC consists of 1 or 2 reps from each of the six JCNA regions and I have served as the Northwest rep on the Committee for the past two years. I have resigned my position due to my responsibilities in CXKJR/CCMGC and my involvement in the JCNA Special Awards Committee. JCNA is therefore looking for one or two new MC members from the Northwest (which includes CXKJR, the Pacific Jaguar Enthusiasts Group, the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria, the Seattle Jaguar Drivers & Restorers Club and the Jaguar Owners Club of Oregon.) The MC meets every two months via a phone-in conference call on Saturday morning at 11 am Eastern Time. Membership Committee members act as communication links between the MC and the Membership Coordinators in each of the region’s clubs. Examples of topics dealt with by the Membership Committee over the past year: the new member application & welcome process, the JCNA Member-at-Large process, the new membership brochure, membership-related resources on the JCNA website, a Roadmap for Forming New JCNA Clubs and a Best Practices document. This is a very active group committed to maintaining & expanding JCNA membership in creative and new ways. If you are interested in finding out more about the Membership Committee and possibly volunteering to join it, contact me at jlorum@shaw.ca or 604-880-7598. He will be starting on the body reconstruction of his 1965 E-Type, the one in pieces/ boxes displayed in his trailer at the August club membership meeting. In place of the evening Garage Nights, John is planning to arrange (weather permitting) for club members to drop by at a pre-arranged time on selected Sundays to see and discuss the progress on the car. He plans to kick this off with an event in early October when he will have an in-depth discussion of this wonderful piece of family automotive history. This will be a not-to-be-missed opportunity for anyone interested in automotive restoration and maintenance. Watch for announcements in Little Classical Gas with details on the Sunday visits. The E-Type in September 2015 Dan’s daughter Sharon with the E-type in its original colour. FROM JOHN CLARKE … The Car was purchased by Carol’s Uncle, Dan Driscoll, and picked up in Montreal in 1965. Dan was a test pilot for Boeing who did all the major testing of the PBY and Catalina flying boats that were built in the northwest, both BC and Washington. In 1965 he lived in Saskatchewan. Having broken in the E-Type as only a test pilot could do, Dan picked up his impressionable niece Carol Clarke (Hooton) from Regina for a ride to Lumsden. Well!!! This was a ride she never forgot. Dan, being no stranger to speed, put the throttle to the floor and all Carol really remembers is the blur of the prairies passing by, the speedo reading 140 miles an hour, the requisite smile on her uncle’s face, and feelings of genuine terror. September | October 2015 The years went by and Dan moved to Nanoose Bay, BC, to live with Carol’s cousin Dennis and his wife. Dan always said he wanted to live until the year 2000, and at the age of 93, three days into the year 2000 Dan went to bed and never woke up. He had his 65 E-Type coupe and his new 7 series BMW parked in the driveway. He also had his driver’s license in his wallet with a perfect driving record, having never received a speeding ticket in his life. E-types are hard to catch. As the result of a later-to-be-told story, we purchased this piece of family history from Cousin Dennis, and we will restore it to its former glory. n Classical Gas | 11 HERITAGE C LASSIC 2015 The 46th Annual Heritage Weekend opened with a Welcome Reception at the Seymour Golf and Country Club in North Vancouver on Friday, August 14. T his year’s 6th annual Luxury and Supercar Weekend returned to the Great Lawn at VanDusen Botanical Garden September 12 and 13. The intention of the show is to allow automotive enthusiasts to experience a “lifestyle weekend”, with the opportunity to view both rare classics and modern supercars. One of the centrepieces of the weekend is the Canadian Concours d’Élégance, with Nigel Matthews, Global Director of Client Services for Hagerty, as the Concours Chairman and Chief Judge. Among the British Invasion classes this year were the Jaguar E-type and the 60th Anniversary of the MGA. Four CXKJR members were invited to show their E-types: Krista Briggs’ 1966 Series I OTS, John & Carol Clarke’s 1969 Series II OTS, Chris O’Neill’s 1970 Series II FHC and Jim & Sue McLagan’s 1974 Series III OTS. Krista’s black beauty took the Canadian Concours trophy for Best in Class, and both the Clarke 1969 Series II roadster and the O’Neill Series II coupe were given Shaughnessy Awards. As Enzo Ferrari is quoted as saying on its release, the Jaguar E-type is “the most beautiful car ever made.” Which is a huge complement considering Enzo Ferrari was never known to be complimentary about anyone or anything, let alone a competitor’s product! [Note OTS refers to “Open Two Seater” and FHC “Fixed Head Coupe.”] The ten-car 60th Anniversary of the MGA display included five CCMGC member cars: Anne & Peter Tilbury’s 1958 replica rally car/coupe, Steve & Sheila Kaufman’s 1960 MGA1600 roadster, Andy & Joyce McCombie’s 1955 MGA 1500 roadster, Rob September | October 2015 McMillan’s 1956 MGA 1500 replica race car and John & Carol Clarke’s 1962 MGA 1600 Mk II. The Tilbury replica rally car was presented with a Shaughnessy Award and Ralph Zbarsky’s 1958 Twin Cam race car won Best in Class. CXKJR members Greg and Elisabeth Wagorn had their 1973 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow on display as well. Next year’s Luxury & Supercar Weekend will be back at VanDusen September 10 & 11, 2016. Applications are already being accepted for cars to be considered for next year’s show at the LSW website: http://luxurysupercar.com or contact Nigel at nmatthews@hagerty.com n 3. Classical Gas | 25 The Last Word November 1 Kruise for Kids November 1 London to Brighton Commemorative Run Kruise for Kids is in its 32nd year of helping the less fortunate at Christmas through cash and toy donations to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau. All toys and donations go directly to the Bureau for distribution to children in the Greater Vancouver-Fraser Valley area, with car clubs throughout the lower mainland area holding fund-raising activities and raffles throughout the year to raise money for the Toy Run and Parade. On the first Sunday in November drivers and vehicles gather at Guildford to pick up a registration form, visit friends and then bring their brand new (unwrapped) toy to a second location where these toys and cash are presented to the Christmas Bureau. Sponsored by the Old English Car Club, Vancouver Coast Branch, this event commemorates the 1896 Motor Car Tour to Brighton when the British Motor Car Club celebrated legislation raising the speed limit from 4mph to 14mph. This year’s departure point is the A & W Restaurant at 22805 Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge, at the intersection of 228th and Lougheed. No pre-registration is required. The registration desk will be open 9:15 to 10:00 am and the cost will be $5, with 100% of the registration fees donated to the Friends in Need Society Food Bank. Optional purchases: $10 for the London to Brighton Plate and $10 for a Run Patch. The first car out will be at approximately 10:10 am, with the route covering Maple Ridge, Mission, Abbotsford and Langley. This year’s pit stop will be at Hayward Park in Maple Ridge and the end location and lunch will be at the Fox & Fiddle Pub, 19530 Langley Bypass, Surrey. For more information: Walter Reynolds at wdrauto@telus.net or (604) 463 6305. For many years the Jaguar/MG Club has led the way with the highest cash donation thanks to your generosity and Doug Gale’s tireless efforts to remind each and everyone he knows that there are many less fortunate that deserve and need our help. Again this year he would like to encourage you to not only donate but to also decorate your car (and perhaps yourself) and come out for the Run. There will be T-shirts for the first 150 entrants, and dash plaques for the first 200. In addition to tons of door prizes, there will be trophies for the Best Decorated Vehicle, Best Dressed Driver and Crew, Best Club Turnout and Best Club Display. We look forward to seeing you at Guildford on November 1st by the Red Robin restaurant (10237 152nd Street, Surrey.) Assembly begins at 8:30 am, with departure promptly at 10 am. Enter from 152nd, keep left – the parking lot has changed drastically. The destination for this year’s Run where the awards will be presented is the banquet room of the Cascades Casino-Resort in Langley. Let’s have a good turnout of CXKJR/CCMGC members - and don’t forget your Santa hat! Or antlers?? For more information please call Doug or Rhonda at (604) 521 3021.
