Employee Health and Occupational
Medicine use telemedicine to
assess and treat employees
Here is a telemedicine scenario. After giving a patient his insulin
injection at Lancaster General Hospital, an employee accidently
sticks herself in the finger while activating the safety device.
Previously the healthcare worker would have gone to LGH’s
Emergency Department.
Now, the employee can take a short walk to the Employee and
Student Health Services office on the first floor of the Downtown
Outpatient Pavilion to have the injury assessed. If needed, Lora S.
Regan, MD, Medical Director of Corporate Health, is called at her
Suburban Outpatient Pavilion office where she examines the injury
via camera and sound through a computer monitor connected
through Link.
The goal is to expedite care, and according to Dr. Regan, the
telemedicine program for employees has been very successful.
“Employees can get immediate attention and treatment for minor
injuries during regular business hours in employee health without
having to go to the Emergency Department,” she emphasizes.
Dr. Lora Regan, Medical Director, Corporate Health, shown on laptop
monitor, and Bobbi Jo Hurst, Manager of Employee and Student Health
Services, demonstrate a telemedicine visit.
Employees who work at the Suburban Outpatient Pavilion can see
Dr. Regan in person at her office in Occupational Medicine, Suite
21, 2110 Harrisburg Pike. Employees at Women & Babies Hospital
go to the Triage area for treatment.
Needle sticks, blood and body fluid exposures, razor cuts and
contusions are the most frequent injuries. Approximately 60
telemedicine visits have occurred since the program began in
January 2014.
Celebrating how
technology connects us
Employees enjoy interactive displays about
technology today and tomorrow
Congratulations to the many departments and staff throughout
the system who worked together to show how technology is
improving the care we give to our patients, helping us to
communicate better with each other, and learning how
technology will connect us in the future during employee
celebrations in October.
LG Health CEO & President Tom Beeman chats with employees
during one of the events held throughout the system.

Growing from a position
of strength
By Thomas E. Beeman, PhD, FACHE,
President & CEO
If you attended one of
LG Health’s Technology
celebrations, you learned
how innovation is changing
the way we care for our
patients and connect with
one another now, and in
the future.
Tom Beeman
Likewise, health systems are exploring new
partnerships and changing the way we are
working together now, and in the future.
Last month, Lancaster General Health and
the University of Pennsylvania Health
System announced a joint decision to
pursue a consolidated relationship. Over the
next several months, we will discuss ways to
strengthen our already successful collaborative efforts, while building new ones.
Our nearly 30 years as part of the Penn
Cancer Network laid the foundation. The
LG Health-Penn Medicine Strategic Alliance
formed in February 2014 was another step.

Our Mission
To advance the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
Our Vision
Delivering on the promise of a healthier future.
A closer relationship with Penn will help
expand our clinical capabilities to better
manage our community’s collective health.
We will be able to integrate our electronic
medical records and become more efficient
in our operations. We will learn from each
other, and share our expertise, research and
medical education.
I invite you to watch an informative video
presentation about why we’re exploring a
consolidated relationship with Penn,
posted on the What’s Hot section of
StarNet.
Like LG Health, Penn is a large not-for-profit
organization. Finding a great strategic
partner, nationally recognized, financially
strong, and dedicated to improving the
health of its communities, is very important
to us. We believe Penn shares our values
and will further support our vision of delivering on the promise of a healthier future.

LG Health’s Diabetes and Nutrition Center
program expands to multiple locations;
receives national recognition
Since LG Health’s Diabetes and Nutrition
Center expanded its program to multiple
locations throughout the county, it’s now
easier for patients in areas like Ephrata,
Parkesburg and Elizabethtown to receive
diabetes education closer to home.
Previously, patients traveled to the center’s
main office on Duke Street.
Mary and her team of four RNs and four
registered dietitians, all certified diabetes
educators, use LG Health’s electronic medical records to effectively communicate the
patient’s progress from any of the multiple
locations to the patient’s primary care
physician and the entire healthcare team.
The provider refers patients to the Center in
the EMR and is able to note specific needs,
such as a social situation impacting their
ability to perform self care or a preferred
location for education.
“We always try to be what we call a
good medical neighbor,” explains Mary
Papadoplos, the center’s Manager.
“The practice refers to us to help the patient
achieve their medical goals. And, after the
education,” she continues, “…The outcomes
have improved for our patients.” Papadoplos
added the plan supports the PatientCentered Medical Home (PCMH) philosophy
of providing care that is patient centered,
comprehensive, team-based, coordinated
and accessible.
Recently, the center again received national
recognition for its Diabetes Self-Management
Training Education Program from the
American Diabetes Association; a distinction
enjoyed for more than 15 years.
