2014-2015
annual report
Last year marked an important shift for the MATHCOUNTS Foundation. Our rebranding emphasized the
multi-faceted organization we have become and focused on the impact we can have on every individual
who participates in our programs.
But the truth is, helping all students find their path to math requires more than excellent programming. It requires raising
awareness of our brand and mission, so that our children grow up in a culture that values math and learning. It requires
tapping into the talent of our alumni network, so that more students can connect what they do in middle school to their
future endeavors. And it absolutely necessitates reaching more students, so that every child—no matter where he or
she is from—has access to meaningful learning opportunities.
For the Second Year in a Row
This year we worked tirelessly to expand MATHCOUNTS, and we have already seen meaningful results:
• For the first time in the four-year history of the Math Video Challenge, the winning students received
an invitation to the White House and attended a roundtable discussion with Vice President Biden.
• At this year’s National Competition we brought together nearly 100 past MATHCOUNTS participants
in the Boston area so they could connect with other alumni and inspire current Mathletes®.
• For the second year in a row, we had a record number of registrations in the MATHCOUNTS
Competition Series, the National Math Club and the Math Video Challenge, meaning we are
impacting more students than ever before.
The reason for our efforts is simple. We do this work because, in the end, it all comes back to the student.
It’s the reason we will continue to do everything we can to expand the reach of our programs and community. And it’s
why we will continue to advocate for a focus on problem-solving and critical thinking in math education.
We know our work would not be possible without the support of our volunteers, donors, alumni and education partners,
and we are excited to see what we can do together in the years to come.

MATHCOUNTS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
2015 Alumni Scholarship Winner
In an ongoing attempt to recognize the work
of our talented alumni, the MATHCOUNTS
Alumni Scholarship is presented to an
outstanding alumnus/a whose experience in a
MATHCOUNTS program had an impact on his
or her academic and professional pursuits. The
2015 MATHCOUNTS Alumni Scholarship was
awarded to Shyam Narayanan, an alumnus of
the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series and the
National Math Club.

MATHCOUNTS STUDENTS
INVITED TO THE WHITE HOUSE
Math Video Challenge Students Attend Roundtable
Discussion with Vice President Biden
For the fourth year in a row, the highest-achieving MATHCOUNTS students were invited to the White House Science
Fair as distinguished guests. The 2014 National Champion, Swapnil Garg, and 2014 Countdown Round Runner-Up,
Kevin Liu, represented the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series, and for the first time in program history, the winning
team from the Math Video Challenge also was invited to attend! The Mathletes (pictured above in their white
MATHCOUNTS polos) had the opportunity to meet the students displaying their projects and were also on stage
during President Obama’s remarks about the importance of STEM education.
After the Science Fair, Matthew Meadows, Garrett Minor, Erick Patterson and Terrell Prince, who won the 2014
Math Video Challenge with their video, “We’re Rich,” had the incredible opportunity to meet with Vice President
Biden to brainstorm ways to help students from underserved communities get involved with STEM.

During his time in MATHCOUNTS, Shyam was a three-time national
competitor representing Kansas (pictured at right at the 2010
Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition). After his days as a
MATHCOUNTS student came to an end he said he felt like a void was
created so he decided to channel his energy into giving back. Using
money earned from other math competitions, Shyam founded a Mu
Alpha Theta math club at his high school and coached students at his
former middle school. Shyam’s club grew and had a profound impact on
numerous students. “As MATHCOUNTS broadened my mathematical
understandings, I helped my peers broaden their scientific horizons
also. For example, during our math club meetings, I introduced classic
yet fascinating problems, and explained various innovative methods to
arrive at the same solutions.” Shyam plans to continue exploring his
math and science potential by attending Harvard University in the fall
and majoring in math.

Over thirty years ago, the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series was created as an extracurricular activity to reach students
who have a love of math and an intrinsic desire to solve problems. Competition students begin the series at the school
level and progress to local chapter competitions, state competitions and finally the National Competition. Over six million
students have participated in this program so far, and this year MATHCOUNTS invited members of the alumni network to
return to meet current Mathletes and give them advice on how to continue to foster their love of math.

The 2015 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition, held for the first time in Boston, MA, brought together
the top 224 students from across the country for an all-expenses-paid weekend. After taking the Written Competition
in the morning, the top 12 students competed head-to-head in the live Countdown Round. Almost 100 alumni from
the Boston area attended the finals, including four past National Champions, and saw Kevin Liu crowned the 2015
National Champion. Kevin (pictured at left) received the $20,000 Donald G. Weinert Scholarship and a trip to U.S.
Space Camp. Since winning, Kevin has appeared on Live! with Kelly and Michael, and has been featured in the
Boston Globe, USA Today and TIME for Kids.

The National Math Club gives students a place to learn
and enjoy math in a non-competitive setting. Generously
sponsored by the Northrop Grumman Foundation, the
National Math Club is a completely free program in
which club leaders are provided fun resources and
activities to use with their students in an extracurricular
setting. Many teachers utilize the program within their
math classrooms, as well.
Highly motivated clubs have the opportunity to earn awards
and win prizes for their participation in the National Math
Club. This year, 348 clubs achieved Silver Level Status
through their participation, and 150 clubs achieved Gold Level
Status. This year’s Gold Level Clubs created a variety of math
puzzles and games based on the activities they completed
over the year. Silver and Gold Level Drawing winners
received gift cards to celebrate their club’s achievements
and the Grand Prize winning club from East Middle School in
Plymouth, MI also received an all-expenses-paid trip to the
2015 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition for four
club members and the club leader.

A fear of math can lead a child to a feeling of inadequacy
and limit his or her future opportunities. The Math Video
Challenge encourages students to develop a variety of
skills, including communication, collaboration and film
editing—skills that are not typically associated with a
math competition—so that students of all ability levels
are empowered to succeed in math in a unique way.
Students work in teams of four and choose a problem
from the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook. They
collaborate to create a video that solves the problem
and explains its real-world application. Videos are then
posted to the contest website for voting and judging, as
well as to create an archive for use by students, parents
and teachers for years to come. Finally, a panel of
expert judges chooses the top four finalist teams, which
receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Math Video
Challenge Finals at the 2015 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS
National Competition. This year, “The Decision by
PBSQ” by PBSQ took the trophy home from Boston, as
well as a $1,000 scholarship for each team member.

The MATHCOUNTS Solve-A-Thon is a free fundraiser
open to all students and teachers looking to raise
funding to support their math education programs.
Students create online fundraising pages that they
share with friends and family to collect pledges and
donations. Then, they solve a 20-question math problem
pack earning them money for each problem they
attempt. In addition to the money earned for their school,
student fundraisers help support local MATHCOUNTS
programming in their community.

2014-2015 STATE &
CHAPTER COORDINATORS
More than 500 chapter competitions and 56 state competitions are held nationwide, allowing hundreds of thousands
of students the opportunity to participate in MATHCOUNTS no matter where they live. This would never be possible
without the countless hours dedicated by nearly 700 volunteer coordinators. MATHCOUNTS appreciates all of the hard
work these individuals have put into helping students succeed in math.
