TOWN CENTRE NEWS // November 2015 In this edition Letter from Commissioner Julie Kenny & Councillor Denise Lelliott | How to support Rotherham in the Great British High Street Competition | Marketing & Communications and plans for Christmas 2015 | Calendar of Festive Events, Markets & Promotions | Latest parking initiatives | Updates on cultural projects & the arts | Flying the flag for Rotherham “Enough is Enough” FREE Parking is back Petition Launched Rotherham shoppers can once again benefit from FREE parking on Saturdays & Sundays in all Council run on-street bays and off-street car parks in the run up to Christmas. A petition against repeated extremist demonstrations in Rotherham Town Centre has been launched. The petition – led by the Council Leader, Cllr Chris Read - aims to draw Government attention to the significant adverse impact which the series of marches and demonstrations are having on the town and the strength of feeling which exists. At the same time, leaders of Rotherham organisations, groups and communities have joined forces in a statement of solidarity, calling for a halt to the disruption caused by the protests and encouraging local residents and business people to sign up, and encourage everyone they know to do the same. Under the banner of ‘Enough is Enough’, they have come together to galvanise a borough-wide commitment to promoting positive images of Rotherham and its prospects for the future, whilst reiterating the need for justice for the victims and survivors of child sexual exploitation, and discouraging any activity which detracts from these aims. @RothTownCentre The campaign is calling on the Government to look again at the current legislation around protest activity, following the significant number of marches which have taken place over the last 18 months in Rotherham and the impact on community relations. The petition adds weight to correspondence which Rotherham’s Commissioners and others in the town have already sent to the Home Secretary Teresa May in a bid to stop the demonstrations. Find out more at rotherham.gov.uk/enough. We know this issue is of significant importance to businesses and would encourage those that feel it appropriate to support the petition to do so. You can also help by making your customers aware of the campaign and by encouraging them to sign too. Paper copies of the petition are available at Rotherham Town Hall and the reception at Riverside House. Posters providing information about the petition have been circulated to town centre businesses. Starting on Saturday 14th November and including Boxing Day on 26th December, car-parking will be free on Saturdays (as well as every Sunday as normal). To ensure a turnover of shoppers and to ensure everyone gets to benefit, the maximum stay restrictions will still apply. Businesses have fed back that the free parking during the festive trading period provides a vital boost to town centre businesses and as such we are pleased to able to offer this incentive again this year. The Council’s car-parking team will once again be taping up the machines on Saturday mornings and removing ready for paying customers on Monday morning and along with radio commercials, press adverts, social media and on-line promotions and notices in car-parks and on parking meters themselves, we hope to spread the word that it’s easier and cheaper to support Rotherham town centre this festive season. We will be distributing posters and flyers to town centre businesses and would be grateful if you could help let your customers know that FREE parking is back. OFFER TO BUSINESSES The Council is offering a limited number of all-day parking permits for Riverside car park, Corporation Street. The offer allows the purchase of parking for only £2.25 per day when purchased in advance, either monthly or fortnightly. Please e-mail parkingservices@ rotherham.gov.uk for more details and start saving! www.rotherhamtowncentre.co.uk rotherham town centre rotherham town centre newsletter rotherham town centre newsletter Welcome to this Autumn edition of Update newsletter. Firstly, thank you to those businesses that attended the October meeting of Rotherham Voice; we hope you were reassured that we have been listening to the issues and challenges you raised when we first met in April and that you have seen the progress that has been made in the areas of marketing & communication, events & promotions, cleansing & environment and parking. There is clearly good news to celebrate in the town with the Independent Retailer Awards providing a great way to get shoppers involved and showcase the town’s fantastic range of independent businesses. Congratulations to all those shortlisted! Under the umbrella of the #loverotherham campaign, hundreds of Rotherham residents took the opportunity to tell us what they loved about the town which made for great reading and provided encouragement that we are on the right track. In further good news the work to regenerate the High Street and wider town centre has been recognised at a national level as Rotherham is shortlisted for the ‘Great British High Street Awards 2015’. As one of three shortlisted towns in our category, the judging is partly based on public votes and we would encourage each and every one of you to take the opportunity to show your support for the town in which you do business, to help get everyone talking about Rotherham for the right reasons and to help us win a share of the national prize that will allow us to continue to do more in the town centre. Vote today and every day until 13th November at www.thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk. New equipment and tidy-ups of eye-sore sites are helping to make the town cleaner and the team will continue to respond to businesses to ensure that litter and rubbish are cleared as quickly as possible- we hope that you have noticed a difference and would remind you that Streetpride rely on your feedback to respond to any problems so please do contact the team on 01709 336003. There’s also been good news on Parking as we can confirm that despite significant budget pressures, we are once again able to support the town by offering FREE weekend parking in the run-up to Christmas, something which we know is of vital importance to you at this crucial trading period. You’ll find more information on dates on the front page of this newsletter. community petition and encourage everyone they know to do the same. The campaign is calling on the Government to look again at the current legislation around protest activity which we know from listening to you, would be welcomed by you all. Please find further information on how to support this campaign in this newsletter. Of course we recognise the challenges the town faces and we must continue to work together to ensure our town centre has as wide an appeal as possible. As businesses you have shown that you are prepared to get involved, whether that’s through taking action to tackle a hot-spot area as was the case with retailers who worked together on a Sunday to clear weeds & debris, repair fencing and make the area at the back of Riverside Precinct cleaner and tidier, or by helping to plan and promote the town’s events with the popular Vintage Hop being a great example. All businesses can help drive footfall in the town, whether that’s through ensuring you have appropriate waste contracts in place or by sharing good news through social media to help spread the word. Together we are and will continue to move the town forward. We look forward to joining you again at a future meeting of Rotherham Voice in the Spring and in the meantime wish you a successful festive trading period. Commissioner Julie Kenny & Councillor Denise Lelliott In response to the strength of feeling from businesses and the wider community, a number of local leaders and organisational heads have joined forces to call for a halt to the disruption caused by the protests and we would encourage local residents and business people to sign up to a Following the trial of FREE Parking on Forge Island, we are pleased to announce the intention to extend this offer to shoppers indefinitely. Retailers have reported that the provision of 70 ‘Red Zone’ bays has provided a boost to business and the move to provide continued free parking at this side of the town centre following Tesco’s relocation has been welcomed. The bays have been extremely well used, although some monitoring of 2 @RothTownCentre As the competition to find Britain’s top High Streets hots up, we are encouraging everyone to get behind the campaign which recognises those towns and cities putting their centres at the heart of their community. Pitched against Altrincham and Tamworth in the ‘Town’ category, Rotherham’s bid focusses on the major improvements that have been made in the town. The winning towns share a prize worth £80,000 and by voting and encouraging your customers to do the same, you can help ensure Rotherham comes out on top. At the time of time of writing, Rotherham was in second place with votes so with 50% of the final score coming from the public vote it is vital we get everyone behind us. At the time of writing, Rotherham is awaiting a visit from the judging panel and it is hoped that the visitors will see first-hand the scale of works that have been undertaken and the number of partners that have been involved, from Rotherham Council, Heritage Lottery Fund and The Arts Council to property owners, retailers and local community and voluntary groups. Voting closes on 13th November and the system allows one vote per email address per day meaning that shoppers, residents, retailers and those that work in the town centre can show their support every day at www.thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk Retailers are reminded that despite what the name suggests, the competition isn’t about saying Rotherham has the best High Street in the country or that we don’t still have challenges to face, it’s about recognising the work that has gone into regenerating the town. The bid was based on the huge investment in the town centre from a variety of partners, not least retailers and building owners themselves and we hope to be able to show the judges just what fantastic businesses, old and new, we have here and just how far the town and High Street have come in recent years “It’s such a boost for all the businesses that are trading here that we’ve been shortlisted from 231 applications! The High Street and wider town has changed dramatically in recent years; the Townscape Heritage Initiative has undoubtedly transformed some of our most impressive buildings. Many of my customers can’t believe the changes when they visit. It would be great to see Rotherham win for everyone that lives here or runs a business in the town centre.” Charlotte Scothern of Patchwork Pig ’It’s great news, how fantastic that people across the country are talking about our town for the right reasons! This is a chance for Rotherham residents to get behind our town and focus on what’s great about where we live. I’m voting every day and would encourage everyone else to do the same. The #loverotherham campaign which ran over the summer and the Retailer of the Year Awards last month were a great way of generating a positive buzz about the town, now we have chance to do that on an even bigger scale.’’ Safety and community cohesion are an important issue for us all and we hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join Chief Inspector Jason Harwin and Council colleagues at a meeting to be confirmed shortly which will discuss the approach to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour in the town. We know targeted operations have already had a positive impact and hope that this can continue. Parking Update Competition for Britain’s Best High Street Hots Up Luke Ellis. Ellis Fruit & Veg. Rotherham Markets. usage has shown that the offer of 3 hours free parking provides opportunities for people visiting for reasons other than shopping. A high percentage of usage of the bays is being used by visitors to the Law Courts, Council Offices & other venues where 3 hours provides ample time for their visit. Following discussions at the Rotherham Voice meeting in October with Commissioner Kenny, it is intended that the offer be reduced to 2 hours free. This reduction will help to ensure that the bays are used for their intended purpose - to provide easily accessible and free parking for those shopping on Corporation Street and the wider www.rotherhamtowncentre.co.uk rotherham town centre town centre. It is hoped that by providing a 2 hour “time slot”, shoppers will still have time to visit all the stores they hoped to and benefit from the free parking offer, and the turnover of customers will increase for the benefit of everyone. Those looking for a longer stay can still find comparably cheap parking for as long as they require. The change to 2 hours will commence in February 2015, ensuring no confusion with the Christmas free parking incentives, and will allow us to give motorists plenty of notice of the changes. Of course we expect it to take some time for the message to get out there and as such the Parking Team will be working with motorists as the changes come into force. A grace period will be observed to make a reasonable allowance for drivers who mistakenly do not read the signs and park for longer than the @RothTownCentre maximum two hour period. In other good news, shoppers can now enjoy the new ‘Pay on Foot’ system at Wellgate Multi-storey Car-Park. Allowing shoppers to obtain a ticket on arrival and pay when they return to the car-park, the system ensures shoppers don’t have to cut their visit short because their parking ticket is about to expire. The investment in the new payment and barrier system was again made in response to businesses who felt that this would be attractive to visitors to the town, giving them a range of options across the town centre with a mixture of Pay & Display, Pay & Top-ups by mobile phone and the new Pay on Foot system. For more information on parking initiatives please contact the Parking Services Team at parkingservices@rotherham.gov.uk www.rotherhamtowncentre.co.uk rotherham town centre 3 rotherham town centre newsletter rotherham town centre newsletter 2015 Christmas Campaign Hosted by Rother FM, this annual festive spectacular is sure to kick start the Christmas cheer with live entertainment including performances from 2013 X Factor finalists Rough Copy, 2012 X Factor contestant Nicola Marie as Lady Gaga and Singer-Songwriter Larissa Eddie who has just toured with Lionel Richie. Extended Shopping Hours As in previous years, it is vitally important to ensure a consistent and accurate message is promoted in relation to any extended shopping hours that retailers are planning to open. In previous years, the idea of opening late on Thursday evenings and on Sundays from the middle of November has not been consistently supported which makes promoting the additional shopping opportunities difficult and has led to complaints and disappointment from shoppers. Based on feedback, it is suggested that other than Switchon Night (12th November) late night Thursdays will not be promoted. From indicative support from independent retailers and a good number of national retailers in the town centre it is suggested that Sunday trading will be promoted. 4 @RothTownCentre In addition to promoting the generic message that the town centre is open on those Sundays, the website and social media will be updated each week to list the businesses that will be open on the forthcoming weekend. In order to ensure your business is included please email towncentre@rotherham.gov.uk with confirmation of the dates and times you will be open. Similarly, if you can confirm your businesses opening times from Boxing Day to New Years’ Day, we will co-ordinate this and add it to both the retailers section of the website (so retailers know who is planning to do what) and on the shoppers’ pages of the website plus social media sites. Please use the same email address to confirm this. www.rotherhamtowncentre.co.uk rotherham town centre AM TOW N C Gi Giftft G idee G2uu0id 15 Following feedback from retailers last year, the Gift Guide will now reach even more customers as not only will 30,000 copies make their way across the borough to households via letter box Th eIndep endent drops, large employers and public buildings, the Guide will also be featured in an 8-page pull Alte rnative out in Rotherham Advertiser. Thank you again to all those that have supported the campaign in 2015! With the busy events programme, markets & fun-days, FREE Parking and independent shopping, there is plenty to promote this Christmas. Press adverts, features in life-style magazines, radio commercials, printed flyers and posters, press releases and social media campaigns will all be used this November & December to encourage everyone to Shop Local and support Rotherham Town Centre. If you have any ideas or suggestions for ways in which we can promote the town please contact the team on 01709 254888 or at towncentre@rotherham.gov.uk. Retailer Awards 2015 The summer of 2015 saw a new campaign for Rotherham as we joined forces with the Rotherham Advertiser to launch the Retailer Awards. Linked to the #LoveRothertham promotion, the competition gave shoppers and residents a chance to talk about what they love about the town and vote for their favourite businesses in a number of categories. Hundreds of shoppers took part and the feedback about the historic buildings and public spaces, the friendly nature of Rotherham people and importantly the fantastic independent shopping offer showed exactly why they choose Rotherham. There will be a main stage in All Saints’ Square with acts performing throughout the day including Joshua Lewis, specialising in swing and rat pack, ‘The Christmas Band’ with lots of festive classics and ‘Elvis Once More’ bringing a bit of yuletide rock ‘n’ roll. ERH TRE 12th Nov Rotherham Christmas Lights Switch-on - from 4.30pm The countdown to Christmas begins in Rotherham Town Centre with an evening of entertainment. 5th Dec – A Dickensian Christmas - 10.30am - 3.30pm Shoppers can step back in time with a day of Dickensian entertainment and fun which will include a Victorian Market, Punch & Judy, Miniature Steam Railway, Dr Phantasma’s Ten in One Show, Barrel Organ, Madam Arcana’s Mirror of Destiny, Rotherham Town Brass Band, Circus Skills, Victorian Dancers and a Victorian Great Exhibition Treasure Trail. Plus a Rodeo Reindeer and Christmas photo boards. Work is well underway to promote the town centre this Christmas with a specific focus on family friendly events and the independent shopping offer. We are delighted that the Gift Guide is back for 2015, in its 3rd Year of providing Rotherham residents with over a hundred present ideas for all the family. Whilst it is once again subsidised by the Portas Pilot funds, it is only possible thanks to support from town centre businesses. Over 30 retailers have taken part meaning that the publication is as big as ever. At the time of writing, Studio Lux photography located on High Street, are once again ensuring that your products are looking their best and the new-look 2015 edition will be distributed in early November. RO Events Programme With 19 shortlisted businesses over 6 categories, 4 awards were based purely on shopper votes and with help from Santander, The Source Retail Skills Academy and Rotherham Advertiser, nominations for best Customer Service and Shining Star Awards were also judged. Retailers suggested they wanted people talking about what’s good about the town and wanted our local media organisations to help us restore pride in Rotherham; the campaign aimed to do just that. A huge thank you to all that took part and congratulations to those that were shortlisted. The campaign went far @RothTownCentre beyond businesses receiving an award but it was a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge those retailers for whom customers took time to vote and to reward the high standards of customer service and contributions to the community made by individuals working in our shops. Double winner Karen Carr said ‘‘I am absolutely delighted to have won 2 of the Retailer Awards. As winner of ‘Independent Retailer’ it goes to show that the public are keen to support new businesses in the town centre and for this I am very grateful. Winning the ‘Outstanding Customer Service Award’ is a testimony to the personal service that people are looking for and appreciate. It was great to hear the feedback from the mystery shopper. The project, funded under the Portas Pilot initiative, supports new start businesses to set up in the town centre by offering flexible low cost retail space and mentoring in the first 12 months of trading. Owner Katie Cheetham, 18, had founded the business having seen first-hand just how big the baby gifts and children’s clothing market had become and initially traded online from home with huge success. Katie impressed the independent judging panel and bagged herself the shop after showcasing an impressive range of branded clothing, gifts, accessories and keepsakes and setting out her ideas for marketing & promotion. As a young entrepreneur supported by Rotherham Youth Enterprise, Rotherham born Katie is delighted to be able to bring her online business to the town centre saying “This opportunity is a dream come true for me! I’ve had so much help from the council team, Rotherham Youth Enterprise and fellow traders and it’s all come together really well. The response has been fantastic and I can’t thank everyone enough. So excited for everything there is to come for Baby Blossom Boutique on this new adventure!’’ Advisory Cabinet Member for Housing & the Local Economy Denise Lelliott said “The Pop-up-Shops have proved a great way to give businesses a helping hand in their early months of trading. We are delighted to see Baby Blossom Boutique join our strong collective of independent retailers; together they give Rotherham a real point of difference.
