Transform your life in as little as 4 minutes a day SHEMANE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AMBASSADOR Healthy living doesn’t have to be hard…in fact, you can begin transforming your life in as little as 4 minutes a day! Hello! I’m Shemane Nugent, and I’m known as the Healthy Lifestyle Ambassador because I’m very passionate about living a healthy, happy life! I overcame a life-threatening condition that made me realize just how important living a healthy lifestyle is. Years ago, we discovered our MTV Cribs home was contaminated with toxic mold in between the walls. Over a course of two years, my health deteriorated. Debilitating migraines plagued me daily, as did chronic fatigue and insomnia. My husband, Ted, and son, Rocco, had similar symptoms too. Doctors told us our problems were stress related, which seemed quite possible. There was something more though. My investigative skills finally paid off…a little too late. Ted and I had four different types of mold in our blood stream. Rocco had severe asthma and I was diagnosed with having pre-emphysema. We destroyed our home and moved to Texas where I could be near a medical facility that dealt with toxic exposures. It was a year before I could even consider exercising. I discovered Zumba® fitness and it changed my life immensely. I regained my strength and stamina and found a workout that was both fun and effective. It came along at the perfect time, too. It fills my heart with so much joy to spread my love for fitness and health with so many others. I have been blessed to be able to develop programs for Zumba® and travel the world doing what I love. 1 My new book, 4 Minutes a Day, Rock ‘n’ Roll Your Way to Happy, will be releasing soon, and I created this book to help you live a healthier, happier life in as little as 4 minutes a day! I’ll let you know when my book is released, and in the meantime, I’ll share with you some insights, plus an assessment to get you started on your journey to living a healthier lifestyle inside this free guide. So let’s get started! THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING CARE OF YOU! As a mother, wife of rock ‘n’ roll legend, Ted Nugent, TV producer, philanthropist and author, I know what’s like to juggle a busy schedule and still try to make time for yourself. It’s important to make time for self-care so that you have the energy to enjoy serving into all the roles in your life without sacrificing your health and well-being. Health and well-being includes taking care of your body, mind and spirit. I’ve included a Self Care Assessment below so you can look at how well you’re taking care of yourself. It’s easy to get so busy that you don’t even realize you’re neglecting yourself until you experience symptoms like lack of energy, anxiety/depression, being out of shape, seeking comfort from things (like food, alcohol, etc.), feeling stressed out, difficulty sleeping, an unhealthy relationship with food, or lack of meaning and fulfillment in life. Take a few moments to review the areas of wellness listed below, and check the box that best describes your level of care. The intention of this assessment is not to judge yourself…it is simply to bring awareness to your current lifestyle so you can decide if you’d like to make different choices that promote health and well-being. 2 SELF CARE ASSESSMENT Eating Healthy: Often Sometimes Never Exercising Consistently: Often Sometimes Never Hydration (Water): Often Sometimes Never Quality Sleep: Often Sometimes Never Spiritual Practices: Often Sometimes Never Positive Thoughts: Often Sometimes Never Healthy Self Esteem: Often Sometimes Never Healthy Relationships: Often Sometimes Never Time for Fun! Often Sometimes Never 3 Review your answers…what areas are you doing well in taking care of yourself: __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ What areas would like like to focus on taking better care of yourself: _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ 4 What are some ways you can work on those areas for just 4 minutes a day? For example, if you’d like to incorporate fitness into your life, you could add 4 minutes of jumping jacks or running in place into your life each day. Or if you’d like to get a better quality of sleep, spend 4 minutes before going to bed to practice deep breathing exercises, journaling your thoughts to release them, or listening to relaxing music. __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ 5 6 KEYS TO CARING FOR YOUR BODY Fitness: consistent exercise is important for creating and caring for a fit, healthy body. What exercise methods do you most enjoy? Whatever method you use, consistent exercise is important for your body’s health and well-being. Not to mention it’s a great stress-reducer! Nutrition: the quality and type of food you consume also has a major effect on the shape and condition of your body. Food is fuel, and putting clean, healthy food in your body helps it to run well. There are so many “diets” out there and figuring out what to eat can be confusing. I enjoy eating natural, unprocessed foods like lean meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Hydration: you’ve probably heard about the importance of drinking water. Water nourishes your organs and tissues, and flushes out toxins. A good rule of thumb for how much water you should drink is about half your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 130 lbs., that equates to 65 ounces of water. There are 8 oz. in a cup, so 65 ounces would be approximately 8 cups of water per day. Sleep: getting enough good, quality sleep is important for your body to recharge and have energy for you to use. Somewhere around 8 hours per night is the typical average. Appreciating your body: your body responds to your thoughts. Critical thoughts affect your body much differently than loving thoughts. Practice appreciating your body and thanking it for everything it does for you. Tuning into to your body: you can learn a lot about yourself simply by tuning to your body. For example, the next time you have a headache, bring your awareness into your body. Are you clenching your jaw because you’re too stressed? Are you getting enough water? Are you holding your breath? Is there anything you can do to help alleviate it mentally, physically or emotionally? Being aware of your body and tuning into it can provide valuable insight into your thoughts and feelings. 6 JUST KEEP GOING!
