Generating “Hand Drawn” Art in Larry Marder (Tales of the Beanworld)’s Style Larry Marder (born May 29, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American cartoonist and writer, best-known as the creator of comic book Tales of the Beanworld, which began as an "essentially self-published title" in 1984. Marder at the New York Comic Convention in Manhattan, October 10, 2010 Larry Marder's World Famous Third Eye Halloween Costume. Samples from Beanworld selected images Samples from Beanworld selected images Samples from Beanworld selected images Sample screenshot of my program (with no post processing) Implemented using Processing JAVA by Ben Fry and Casey Reas Early stage screen shots Early stage screen shots Early stage screen shots (still very regular) The experiment 12 images from 4 groups Group A: marked as A1, A2, A3, using no rotation for images and fixed gap spaces for all shapes, there is also no avoiding similarity at all Group B: marked as B1, B2, B3, where rotations for images are applied, but still with fixed gap and no avoiding similarity Group C: marked as C1, C2, C3, with rotations for images, not a fixed gap (ranged), also these images are generated with similarities avoiding Group D: marked as D1, D2, D3, that a human (Ying FAN, i.e. myself) defines; only locations of images and vertices of the triangles are defined A B C D The experiment 3 Questions Q1. Q2. Q3. Which one looks more random to you? Which one looks more like human drawn to you? Which one do you like more? 18 pairs (of images) Q1 Q2 Q3 1 A1B1 A3B3 A2B2 2 A2C1 A1C3 A3C2 3 A3D1 A2D3 A1D2 4 B2C2 B1C1 B3C3 5 B3D2 B2D1 B1D3 6 C3D3 C2D2 C1D1 The experiment 3 Questions Q1. Which one looks more random to you? Q2. Which one looks more like human drawn to you? Q3. Which one do you like more? For each question, the answer could be: A. B. C. D. The first one, The second one, Both, Neither. The experiment Results The original outcomes The experiment Results for each pairs of all 12 images Future work The ultimate objective is to have a program which can mimic Larry Marder’s style so that it can really assist him for his creations, the images produced by the program should look no difference to human compared to his original drawings. To introduce a new random method combine with machine learning to make the images more human-drawn like. Variable numbers of vertices of a polygon, instead of triangle only at this stage. Add real edge detection for easier using. Allow mix with multiple images when filling.
