A Message from the President
Dear Friends,
We welcome you to a lovely evening. A
night of watching the sun go down, enjoying the sounds of a bluegrass band and
savoring a small plate menu featuring foods
grown in our local area. Specialty wines
will be available to taste and purchase. The
silent and live auction offers treasures and
entertainment. And, recognizing one of our
city’s own treasures who is working hard to
teach the next generation to care for our planet. While you are reveling in what
is sure to be a memorable evening, you are also helping to protect the natural
greenway and corridor in southern Danbury.
This year we have the honor of recognizing Helena Nitowski, Ph.D. and Principal of the Academy for International Studies, which is an elementary magnate school dedicated to teaching children about the importance of valuing the
earth’s natural resources.
I hope you enjoy yourselves in this beautiful setting. Enjoy the music, the food
and the wine. Gather with friends. And, bid on the items for sale. Most of all,
please give your support and ensure that our open spaces will always be so.
Finally, to our sponsors ... thank you. You are true partners.
Gratefully,
Michael Marcus
President of the Board
Dr. Helena Nitowski
OUSTANDING SERVICE AWARD
Dr. Helena Nitowski, a principal in Danbury for 13
years, has been at the helm of the Western Connecticut
Academy of International Studies (AIS) since it opened
in 2006. The public magnet school has a mission of
developing socially responsible global citizens who use
technology to access the world. Prior to AIS, Nitowski
was the principal of Mill Ridge Intermediate School.
The AIS magnet school, located on property adjacent to the university’s
Westside campus, is open to all Danbury students as well as students from
area towns through a lottery system. With a theme of International and Global
Studies, the school’s 412 students in kindergarten through fifth grade are also
taught a foreign language.
At the Academy for International Studies, students become socially responsible
global citizens who use technology to access the world. An emphasis on
International Studies and World Languages facilitates critical thinking and
broadens mastery of the district curriculum. The school community creates a
supportive climate where students practice collaborative problem solving and
understand other’s perspectives while valuing and respecting diversity.
Students value that global citizenship begins with responsible citizenship in
one’s own world. And they learn how they can protect their planet and
conserve resources that are so critical to life.
In 2014, The Academy received the Connecticut Association of Schools
Outstanding Elementary School of the Year Award. It was recognized for the
school’s sense of community, their outstanding programs, their level of
academic achievement, and the overwhelming positive feeling one enjoys.
This is what distinguishes Dr. Nitowski’s commitment to education and
teaching students their responsibility for protecting our world, our planet and
living a sustainable lifestyle.
Mission
The Land Trust of Danbury is an all-volunteer, nonprofit conservation
organization with the sole mission of protecting Danbury’s natural areas
and quality of life. All of our activities relate to that mission.
Accordingly:
• We seek to permanently protect properties with significant
conservation value.
• We educate the general public and, in particular, landowners on
the extraordinary value of conservation, including substantial tax
benefits. Also, we advise landowners of alternative conservation
strategies.
• We manage our existing properties – including clearing of invasive
exotics, maintaining existing trails and establishing new trails.

About The Land Trust of Greater Danbury
The Land Trust of Danbury is a private, nonprofit organization formed for the sole purpose of protecting
open space – woodlands, fields, ponds, vernal pools and other wetlands – for scenic views, beautiful places for
walking or running, nature education and inspiration, and habitats on which wildlife depend.
The land trust was incorporated in 1971 by a group of concerned residents. The initial land donated to the
land trust in the early 1970s was in the Long Ridge Road area. To this day, the largest number of acres owned
by the land trust lie in this area.
Over the years, the number of acres has grown to 217. During this period, the land trust has led many educational
programs – including bird, wildflower and other nature walks and various presentations, often featuring slides
and live animals. The Land Trust of Danbury strongly supports all Danbury open space initiatives and played
a very active role in contributing to the Ives Trail and Greenway. In addition to protecting vital resources,
the greenway passes historic sites associated with the musician Charles Ives, including his birthplace, home
museum and Pine Mountain where he was inspired by the outdoor sounds of the environment.
Today, communities are learning of the value of protecting undeveloped land and creating greenways. Studies
show that conserving open land, choosing carefully where development goes, and creating natural corridors of
open space are essential to economic health. Providing a sound balance of affordable housing, infrastructure,
and protecting open space involve using the land appropriately. Development that destroys community
resources is both economically and environmentally wasteful. Greenways make a difference.
Greenways
The word evokes images of winding pathways, slow-moving rivers, and tranquil open spaces. The benefits of
greenways, such as the Ives Greenway, range from ecological to economic and social, particularly important in
an urban setting. Greenways are quiet oases, helping to moderate the rush and noise of cars and people. They
also promise undisturbed pathways for hiking, bicycling, canoeing or horseback riding. They conserve natural
ecosystems, offer migration routes for wildlife, protect archeological sites, and maintain places where people
can experience the beauty and complexity of nature. In Danbury, greenway can provide the user with the
additional benefit of linking art and nature.
Conserving native ecosystems and landscapes is important to preserving vital resources. Interconnected natural
ecosystems filter pollutants from the air, water, and soil, aid in cooling streams and soils with the shade they
provide, protect and enhance water quality of the rivers and lakes, and recharge groundwater aquifers. All are
essential to the water source that serves Danbury business and residents. Water and land pathways such as
the Ives Greenway Trail can expand tourism and associates businesses, providing recreational opportunities for
residents and visitors. Greenways actually support economic growth.
Creating a Greenway for the Future
In 2008 The Land Trust of Danbury began identifying the priorities and goals for the future. The overarching
objective is to protect contiguous lands to form corridors and greenways that have conservation values critical
to maintaining a quality of life in Danbury: meadows, vernal pools, permanent waterfalls, steep slopes,
ridgelines, large wetlands, and critical habitats. The greatest opportunity to have the most significant impact
is in Southern Danbury, where a corridor is emerging that links with the Ives Trail and Greenway. The Land
Trust already has a strong presence is this area, and many of the landowners have a deep-seated commitment
to conservation. It is also an area that is at greatest peril due to potentially aggressive development, with over
500 acres potentially at risk. Once that land is gone, it is gone forever. Thank you for investing in our future.
