The D-Cam Series Wireless Radio Camera for live ENG and Outside Broadcasts with no multipath distortions Wireless Cameras – A History Gigawave have been pioneering the development of wireless camera Gigawave MTV Transmitter in the camera docking unit and utilised an systems for 15 years. The introduction of the analogue PITA system, omni directional transmit antenna. A unique integral video encoder with its sophisticated auto-tracking antenna system, made high quality took Y,U,V inputs from the camera and processed them into a format pictures from a wireless camera a reality. The PITA system was effective which included no amplitude or phase components for transmission in overcoming some of the multipath distortions by keeping the across the link. The received signal was processed back into antenna beamwidth to a minimum. However, the complex conventional Y,U,V and composite analogue video. electromechanical made both construction capital and maintenance cost prohibitive. It was clear that rather than trying “Real-time live digital transmission, with high video quality is now possible with D-Cam” The G-Cam was so successful it was selected as the only wireless camera used at the Sydney Olympics 2000. Multiple G-Cams were used to bring viewers to eliminate multipath it would be better to process the signal so that multipath no longer caused picture previously impossible live close-up shots from the spectacular opening distortions. Multipath causes rapid amplitude and phase changes in the ceremony and the many events which followed. signal, which in turn has objectional effects, particularly on the colour But technology moves on and the demands for digital transmission subcarrier of conventional analogue video. have led to the development of the D-Cam….. Gigawave’s solution was the G-Cam, which incorporated a standard The D-Cam, a new generation ... the best of both worlds! MPEG 2 (4:2:2 ) ‘Wavelets’ Fully scalable compression from 4 to 26 Mbps: Unique Gigawave encoding system: Extremely robust RF A video bit rate of 4 Mbps with QPSK COFDM modulation provides an extremely robust RF signal and improved ‘link budget’ for use in news gathering and other difficult RF environments. Less than 1ms* delay Negligible delay combined with excellent picture quality makes ‘Wavelets’ the ideal compression system for television outside broadcasts and studio production. * Maximum 20ms allowing for normal camera synchronisation. Typical receive configuration The Digital benefits Previous generations of radio camera have been designed to either avoid reflected signals with directional antennas or minimise their effect by video processing. With the introduction of Gigawave’s new COFDM multi-carrier modulation, the reflected signals actually provide a useful benefit. With parallel data transmission, if a number of carriers are distorted or even destroyed by a frequency selective fade, they can be reconstructed in the demodulator by correlation with the correctly recovered carriers. This means that even if no direct line of site transmission is possible the D-Cam is capable of providing perfect pictures by rebuilding reflected signals. Operation inside buildings and around corners can now be accomplished with ease. Gigawave have utilised their expertise in RF technology to completely re-design and linearise the RF stages of the link, to provide minimum power consumption in the transmitter and maximum receiver efficiency. Operation at distances in excess of 10km are achievable with only 100mW output power under correct operational procedures. D-Cam is fully compatible with the latest generation MVL-D series and PTV-D series digital receivers and will typically work with an omni antenna on the camera and a fan beam or more directional antenna on the receiver. All functions of the transmitter, including modulation mode selection, encoding mode selection and frequency tuning, are selectable via the easy to use control panel mounted on the side of the transmitter unit. This provides access for ‘on location’ parameter changes.
