January/February - Congregation Shir Chadash
January / February 2016 Tevet / Sh’vat / AdarAdar-I 5776 Dear Temple Family, What an amazing time this is for our congregation! We’ve planned so many wonderful programs for this coming year! We’ve organized Congregational Dinners for every third Friday of the month followed by a Torah portion skit and discussion. This Shabbat worship experience will engage young and old. The following are the dates for the congregational dinners, and who is responsible for cooking and cleaning: January 15,Linda Waltzman & Friends, February 19, the Facterman family, March 18, the Collins family, April 15, the McCarthy family May 20, Pam Flores & Friends & June 17, Jon Strum. Dinners, of course, will follow the synagogue kashrut policy. Please mark your calendars! On the 4th Friday of every month I’ll be leading a Meditational Shabbat. This inspiring Shabbat will include a guided meditation and the possibility to reflect on spiritual themes. On the second Tuesday of every month, starting in January, at 2 pm seniors will be invited to watch a movie and have a discussion afterwards. Cookies will be provided. On February 7 at 6:45pm I will start teaching an 18 class course of Intro to Judaism, for Jews to expand their knowledge, and for those who are seeking conversion to Judaism. I will offer the course in English and in Spanish. We are happy to announce that Jon Strum will be directing the Purim Shpiel this coming year. We will be calling for a first meeting in January for those who are interested in participating. This year we’ll make it simpler; we will rehearse only 4 times, and participants won’t have to memorize the script, so we hope we have more people interested in taking parts. This year’s theme is “Greece.” I’m planning Havdalah Dinners at my home. You will be called soon to schedule one. This is an opportunity for us to keep getting to know each other and form stronger relationships. God Bless you B’shalom, Rabbi Mariana Gindlin Town Hall Meeting with the Consul General of Israel, David Siegel Wednesday, Feb. 10th / 7 pm On Wednesday, February 10, 2016 the Jewish Federation along with all of our area Jewish agencies and synagogues will be hosting David Siegel, the Consul General of Israel, for a town hall meeting. The evening program will feature an up-to-the-minute report on what is going on in Israel and Israel’s perspective of what is going on in the region from a senior representative of the State of Israel, followed by a question and answer session. Many of the community’s local elected officials, as well as area clergy, will be invited to attend this event. David Siegel assumed the post of Consul General of Israel in Los Angeles in 2011, where he serves as the senior representative of the State of Israel to the Southwestern United States. Before taking over as the Consul General, David Siegel served as Chief of Staff to Israel's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and was involved in policy formulation and decisionmaking at the senior levels of Israel's foreign policy establishment. He also served two terms at the Embassy of Israel in Washington D.C. and was deeply involved in policy coordination with the State Department, the National Security Council, and the White House. In addition, he participated in the 1998 Wye River Peace Summit, the 1999 Israel-Syria negotiations, and the Camp David Middle East Peace Summit in the fall of 2000. “The opportunity to bring a senior representative of Israel, like Consul General Siegel, to our community is . ..(continued pg. 14) cÜxá|wxÇàËá `xáátzx Wow it has been a busy me around Congregaon Shir Chadash. First off I want to wish everyone a happy New Year, and thank everyone who has volunteered and worked so very hard to make things happen. Another excing opportunity to meet and eat before services. Rabbi Gindlin is adding addional themes to our Friday evening services so we hope you will take advantage of these special Shabbat happenings. This March we are looking forward to another wonderful Purim Schpiel, wri.en and directed by Jon Strum. A fun event that has become a CSC tradion so don’t miss it. Check your emails for audions! Hopefully in our future our wonderful family will grow and expand. I look forward to that happening. I wish everyone a healthy and good secular New Year. Please be well. Pat Spievak If you thought that Passover was the only “Seder” of the year, think again. On Tu B’Shvat, you can ponder a world of fruits. Please join us for this very special Seer and fun filled afternoon, for the whole family. A brief T”U BiSh’vat Seder will celebrate natural foods found in Israel and will remind us of our responsibility to care for the environment. That will be followed by games for all ages and, of course, snacks! Please RSVP 3 4 Life’s Roots A Meditation Based on letters and talks of Rabbi M. M. Schneerson We are trees, living two lives at once. One life breaking through the soil into this world. Where, with all our might, we struggle to rise above it, grapple for its sun and its dew, desperate not to be torn away by the fury of its storms or consumed by its fires. Then there are our roots, deep under the ground, unmoving and serene. They are our ancient mothers and fathers, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rivkah, Yaakov, Leah and Rachel. They lie deep within us, at our very core. For them, there is no storm, no struggle. There is only the One, the Infinite, for Whom all the cosmos with all its challenges are nothing more than a fantasy renewed every moment from the void. Our strength is from our bond with them, and with their nurture we will conquer the storm. We will bring beauty to the world we were planted within. Participate in JNF’s Tu B’Shvat Across America Celebrate Tu B’Shvat. Plant a Tree in Israel Since its founding, JNF has planted more than 240 million trees in Israel to protect the land, prevent soil erosion, green the landscape, and preserve vital ecosystems. The trees maintain forest health, combat desertification, protect watersheds, and manage water flow. Additionally, they create a “green lung” to combat carbon dioxide emissions in the region. JNF’s success at planting trees in Israel has resulted in naturally expanded forests. PLANT TREES through Congregation Shir Chadash and part of your $18 donation for each tree will benefit our synagogue. Camp Shir Chadash Dec. 2015 PLEASE KEEP THE DONATIONS COMING! CSC Addresses Hidden Hunger in Our Local Communities We collect food items year round to help address the hidden hunger in our community. There, his father became a founder of the Masorti (Conservative) movement in Israel and spiritual leader of Moriah Congregation in Haifa. David’s own religious upbringing has touched the mainstreams of Judaism. Raised in a Conservative home, on arriving in Israel he was enrolled at a Chabad school in an absorption center, then attended an Orthodox grade school and yeshiva, and later taught at a Reform school. After serving as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces, Siegel returned to his birth state. Mr. Siegel graduated from the University of Vermont with a B.A. in Political Science and earned a Masters Degree in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston. He served as a Commander in the Israel Defense Forces. Consul General Siegel is married to Myra ClarkSiegel, and they have three young children.
