finished with three specialty wins, three Best of Winners awards, two specialty Best Puppy awards, and
three specialty Best in Sweeps, one being the PWCCA National. Her last specialty win and the finishing
touch was lucky enough to be Potomac where she
finished from the BBE class.

So much has happened during my term as
President over the last four years. During
those years, I have felt fortunate to have a
strong team of members supporting the club
in all areas and rallying behind me, showing our sister clubs the
strength of being a unified yet diverse group of people promoting a
single goal – highlighting the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, this wonderful
breed of ours.

As I sit here to write my message to the
membership, the reality is hitting me that
this will be my final message to you all. With
the changing roles will come the energy
brought on by a new team with fresh ideas
to lead this club into the future.
I feel I reached and/or fulfilled many of the goals I had envisioned
as the direction in which to lead this club. And I thank the membership for having faith in me, and the BOD, as we all went down
this path together. But as happens in all aspects of our lives, there
comes a time when once these goals have been met, or achieved,
that it is time for a new leader to come along to continue to inspire
the membership to strive for other, as of yet uncharted goals.
With that said, I see our club moving forward with a strong,
well-rounded BOD to continue promoting the Pembroke Welsh
Corgi in all aspects of our lives – whether being a companion dog,
performance dog and/or conformation dog. I look forward to being a
part of this new chapter in the club’s story as a strong supporter of
the club’s activities. And I wish the new BOD great successes in all
their endeavors.
To the membership, I wish you all great successes in all your endeavors with your corgis. It has been an honor and a privilege to be
the President of the PWCCP.

COURSING ABILITY TEST REVIEW
Pouring rains the night before threatened to leave a soggy, muddy course
for our Third Annual Coursing Ability Test scheduled for May 7, 2016. Fortunately it stopped during the night in time for the field to drain, allowing
our short legged coursers to chase the lure early Saturday morning. Once
again we were guided by members of the Chesapeake Bay Area Rhodesian Ridgeback Club and the Hanover Lure Coursing Club, who supplied
the equipment and expertise, as we hosted 21 dogs running the 300-yard
course. Prior to competing, all of the dogs were inspected for fitness by our
Inspection team headed by Heidi Kennedy with the assistance of Frank
Longo. Field Trial Secretary Bonnie Louden from
CBARRC posted the run order list and recorded
the results.
Returning for a second year, Judge Bob Marciszewski, Borzoi Bob, kept the official
time and decided the merits of each dog’s performance. Not only is the CAT a timed
event requiring the dogs to complete the course in 90 seconds or less, but they must
also complete it with enthusiasm and without interruption. Most have no trouble with
the time limit, but some try to outsmart, or perhaps herd the lure by getting ahead of it thereby missing essential turns in the course. That can lead to a disqualification by the judge. Of our 21
entries, 15 passed earning qualifying ribbons toward Coursing Ability titles. Additionally, three of those 15 were awarded beautiful orange and white rosettes for
reaching the new suffix title of CA (Coursing Ability). CA is awarded to a dog that
passes the Coursing Ability Test three times under at least two different judges.
Several are approaching even higher titles of CAA (Coursing Ability Advanced) and
CAX (Coursing Ability Excellent).
After the awards were presented and our dogs rested, those who just could not resist the call to the chase and
those attending the Fun Fair took to the field and participated in 55 fun runs.
This year, as in the past two, I would like to thank our PWCCP Field Trial Committee—Heidi Kennedy, Frank
Longo, Lynn Longo, Sue Geiger, John Dugan, and Ted Schwartz—for helping to making this event a success.
A special thank you must go to Bonnie Louden and her team from CBARRC and the Hanover Lure Coursing
Club, who act as our Huntmasters and Lure Operators, and to Borzoi Bob, our spirited judge.

FUN FAIR 2016
The Fun Fair was held on May 7, 2016 at the Johnsville Ruritan Pavilion.
The day was a great success! Despite a week of moderate to torrential
rains, our weather cooperated. Though it was a little damp and overcast in
the morning, the sun came out and we had a gorgeous day.
As always, we had a great team of workers who made setup and tear
down go very quickly and easily. I am always amazed and grateful at how
quickly and easily we are able to setup and break down, due to the help
from club members and friends.
Special thanks to co-chair Sherrie Biernacki and to Lynn and Frank
Longo, for being on hand every year to help with all games and contests.

Games started after the CAT was concluded, as attendees enjoy watching
the trial. Attendance seemed high this year. There were 55 lure coursing fun runs at $5.00 each.
Dr. Janet Isherwood held an Eye Clinic in our motor home and fifteen dogs had eye tests. This worked very
well, and I recommend that we do this every year. My hope is that with advanced planning, we can get more
participants. Special thanks to Jen Crivelli for planning this on short notice and to Shawn Michael for handling
eye clinic check-ins.
Ann Pribyl set up a Novice/Advanced Rally course. After
demonstrating the course, she was available to take owners and
their corgis through the course. This year we required a $1 ticket to
participate in Rally, the same price as the games and contests and
much less than the $10 a dog training club would charge for a run
thru.
Special thanks to Derry Krause for doing the Canine Good Citizen
testing. Three new CGC titles were
achieved!
Heidi Kennedy did a Microchip Clinic, and
five dogs were microchipped.
Special awards went to the farthest distance traveled (Glenna Felty), the greatest
number of dogs attended from one household (Heidi Kennedy), and the Oldest Corgi,
Hannah, owned by Barbara Boltz.
Suggestions for 2017 would include putting better parking signage and minor
adjustment of the schedule. George handled parking and suggested that we add no parking signs on the
neighbor’s yard, where the grass is nice and no one is supposed to park.
I have adjusted the printed schedule 2017 to allow for more time for the popular Rally demo between 12.30-2.
We want to add some additional demos at this time frame. Additionally, there was some confusion about an
“end time” of 2PM for the Fun Fair. Since there is no set end time,
we will make sure that this is clear for 2017.
I am happy to chair the 2017 Fun Fair with Sherrie Biernacki,
who has agreed to continue as co-chair. According to the AKC
corresponding date calendar, the Fun Fair should be held on May
13, 2017, which is the day before Mother’s Day. Trish Mitchell will
contact the Ruritan for availability and confirm that it is not the
same date as the Tractor Pull. Given that we do the CAT with the
Fun Fair, it’s important that we try to use a site that enables us to
hold both events in close proximity to one another.

Our sweet girl came to us in 2006 and there wasn’t a day that she didn’t fill our hearts with joy and laughter.
Sunny was a loyal Corgi who embraced life with playfulness, curiosity, and pure happiness. She loved to travel
and at every opportunity she would be in the car. We were very blessed to have this beautiful girl in our lives.
She is deeply missed each and every day — her pitter patter sounds, her cuddles, her happy face — but we
know she is waiting at Rainbow Bridge and spreading sunshine to all of her friends.
Sunny, you were truly “As Good As It Gets”!

PRESIDENT’S AWARD 2016
This year’s recipient of the Virginia Gardiner bronze and President’s Award certificate is Betty Clewis. Betty
was first introduced to the club in 2002. At that time, the club was in need of a club member to assume the
role of Editor of the Tide and the BOD had been notified that there was an applicant for membership who had
expertise in putting together a newsletter publication. Betty was enthusiastically accepted into membership and
14 years later as Betty announced her retirement from the helm of the Tide, it was time for her unfailing devotion to producing a first class publication to be recognized.
As if being the editor of the Tide was not enough, Betty has also held other club jobs where her eye for detail
has been invaluable. She has left future Chairpersons with detailed outlines on the steps she used as Chair of
Trophy Sponsorships for our annual Specialty show, Ribbon Coordinator, and Calendar Coordinator.
My one regret was that Betty was unable to join her fellow club members at this year’s Specialty Show Banquet where we could all toast and roast her for all that she has done to promote our club and all that it represents for highlighting the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Betty – Please enjoy this token as the club’s way of thanking you for everything you have done!

who shared photography and articles, true artists--you added that special interest to each issue. Many have
touched our beloved newsletter. I am humbled and honored to have been allowed to serve as editor. The many
voyages are treasured memories that will long be remembered.
I am very humbled to receive the President’s Award from President Gigi Fitzgerald. I was completely surprised
when Gigi called to tell me. I can only say that “The Tide” was a joy, and as editor, I share the achievement with
my merry crew. Thank you all so much.

needed serving utensils. Kathy and Stephon will once again be providing the BBQ feast.

Training Spotlight: Helping to Ease Separation Anxiety
AKC Gazette breed column, Flat-Coated Retrievers: Keeping your departures and returns calm and
controlled can help ease your dog’s separation anxiety.
Some dogs are very prone to separation anxiety. Whining, barking, and/or destructiveness in the
absence of the owner are signs of a distressed and frustrated dog, which can lead to an unhappy
owner.
The key to controlling separation anxiety is to always leave the dog calmly, ideally leaving him
with a biscuit and a toy or something to do, and always return with calm control.
If your dog was in his crate while you were away, upon your return enter the room the crate is in
alone, with no people or other pets accompanying you, and close the door behind you. Say nothing to
the dog, and quietly busy yourself around the room for a minute or two at first, gradually longer,
to get him used to waiting. Then go to the crate with a collar and lead. Say nothing to him and
unlatch the crate door, but don’t open it.
Boundary-line train your dog by opening and closing the crate door an inch or two, quickly,
repeatedly, 10 or 20 times or until the dog is calmly watching. Then gradually open and close the
door wider and more slowly. If the dog begins to come out, gently but quickly close the door and
start over. When he understands that he is to wait while the door is fully open, put his collar and
lead on as you call him out, then have him stop and sit (or stand if he is a show dog). Control him
with stops and turns every few steps, both inside the room and out, until he is under control.
Speak to him pleasantly in a low, calm voice, but be careful to not allow him to touch you.
Touching you will excite him as much as being played with will. If you have trouble keeping him
from touching you, practice left turns and circles left during training sessions and use them when
he is excited about you.
Don’t allow any greetings with any other pets or people or affection or play from you until he has
been calm for 15 to 20 minutes. This will be time consuming at first, but it will take less time in
a few days and will save you a lot of time in the long run.
If while you were away you left your dog loose in the house or a room, yard, or dog run, rejoin him
by going into this area when you return, rather than opening a door or gate and letting him explode
out. Walk into his area and walk past him, speaking to him pleasantly in a low voice. Have him sit
for a biscuit while you put on his collar and lead, and treat him as you would coming out of a
crate. Or tease him with a biscuit or toy and throw it to distract him.
The Flat-Coat is a dependent, excitable breed that is prone to separation anxiety. Prevent
explosive or bolting behavior when you return, and you will have a happier, healthier, less anxious dog.

REMEMBERING A TREASURED FOUNDING MEMBER
Peggy Birckhead Kessler
December 30, 1936 – March 4, 2016

Peggy Kessler, a founding member of PWCCP who worked diligently for the club and
the breed, passed away suddenly after a short illness. We’ve lost a respected judge,
a fantastic mentor, and a top notch breeder who cared about our bloodlines. She was
a truly amazing lady who touched many lives and had a huge impact on our breed.
Sally Wynn described Peggy as a very special person—very kind and lots of fun,
never uttering an unkind word about anyone. Sally accompanied Peggy on some
foreign judging assignments in England (for the Welsh Corgi League), New Zealand,
Australia and the Netherlands. She said Peggy’s motto was, “You can sleep at home!
Never waste time sleeping when you are visiting another country.”

was truly a class act.”
While many agree that Peggy was a highly respected judge for many prestigious
shows nationally (including the PWCCA) and internationally, she didn’t flaunt her
knowledge. Pam Dent said Peggy’s wealth of knowledge was “just amazing. She had
an incredible eye for dogs, but she was quiet and didn’t flaunt her knowledge…She
Sally said Peggy was an excellent mentor. “What a wealth of knowledge she was willing to share!” They spent
hours going over any Pembrokes they could find to examine. Peggy would move them and then ask Sally what
she would expect to find before they were put on the table. And sometimes they would do the reverse, going
over the dog on the table and then she would ask
Sally to predict how the dog would move. While
sitting ringside during specialties, they would make
notes and compare opinions later that night.
Ann Phillips said she had many learning sessions
with Peggy, who patiently taught others about line
breeding, English bloodlines and kennel management. “We visited her home many times over the
course of the years as we used her stud dogs to begin our line breeding,” Ann said. “She introduced us
to her ‘doggie’ friends at dog shows and soon there
was a village beginning for us that encompassed a
number of people and their dogs.”
Dora Carter said Peggy was a gracious and knowledgeable breeder. Dora remembers several conversations in which Peggy and Dora’s husband,
Joe, were discussing English bloodlines. Dora says
they are probably talking about that now!

After meeting her when Pam joined Charlottesville-Albemarle Kennel Club, Pam said that Peggy approached
her about co-owning Wakefield Anniecrombie, which was the start of their traveling and working together. “I
learned so much from Peggy,” Pam said. “There was no better mentor.”
Ann said Peggy imported Stormerbanks dogs from Patsy Hewan of England so the Stormerbanks gene pool
could be used in the United States. Sally said there were several of Peggy’s corgis that were favorites of hers,
especially Stormerbanks Poetry and Wakefield Rosemary. Being partial to the males, Peggy’s favorite was
Lynfarne Poldark, but Louise Clarke wouldn’t let him come to the States until it became apparent that Poldark

and his brother weren’t going to co-exist very congenially, Sally said. “Poldark and one of his sons, Martindale
Butter Brickle, certainly had a great influence on the breed in this country.”
Peggy owned and successfully managed Wakefield Kennel in Earlysville, Virginia. Peggy got involved in obedience training when she had a boarding kennel. She was so successful that she even trained dogs for the
police. Pam said one time Peggy was in the obedience ring, doing off-lead heeling. She heard laughter and
looked down. Her dog was no longer with her! She glanced around and discovered that her dog had jumped
out of the ring and was sitting in a folding chair watching her. (Sounds like something our breed would do,
doesn’t it?)
“She would do just about anything someone asked her to do
for PWCCP,” said Ann. In the early days of tail-gate picnics,
it was not uncommon for Peggy to get her husband to pick
up and deliver pizzas or sandwiches. Ann remembers one
time that Peggy, who was the kennel club Show Chair that
day, got her husband to deliver at noon sharp 10 buckets of
Kentucky Fried Chicken in their Rolls Royce for exhibitors
and the judge.

She was active in a lot of organizations. According to her
family, some of her affiliations included National Association
of Dog Obedience, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac, the
Welsh Corgi League of England, the Papillion Club of America, the Virginia Student Foundation, Church of Our Saviour,
and Glenmore Country Club.
JoAnn Schmidt summed it up nicely: “Peggy was a dear and
wonderful person with friends around the world who will sorely miss her. Because of the depth of her knowledge of corgis and her stature in the breed, she was invited to judge, not only in the US, but globally. She
bred and/or owned many lovely corgis, but my favorites, and, I trust, those of other breeders and fanciers as
well, were Ch. Llynfarne Poldark, Ch. Stormerbanks Poetry and Ch. Stormerbanks Abercrombie. I treasured
time spent with Peggy! I will miss her wonderful smile,
graciousness and her knowledge of and impact on our
beloved breed.”
Peggy is probably smiling down at us while lovingly surrounded by hundreds of Pembrokes, German Shepherd
Dogs, Poodles, Brittanys, Papillions, horses and parrots.

PWCCP MEMBERS’ KENNEL NAMES

If the PWCCP club members have wondered over the years how their fellow breeders came up with a kennel name, all will be revealed as you enjoy the following article that solves the mystery! Thank you to all who
shared their special stories.
We would love to include the stories behind all PWCCP member’s kennel names. The stories that are included in this issue are the responses that we received from our emails to the membership requesting your stories.

The stories are in alphabetical order by kennel name, except those from founding members, which are listed
first.
CAEGWN
I [JoAnn] was taking a course from a visiting Welsh professor. When the
course was over, he wrote his address on the blackboard (yes, blackboard —
that dates it for sure!), and he invited correspondence. His street address was
Caegwynn — it means “white fields.” I liked the sound of it and, of course, it
was Welsh. I shortened it to Caegwn to maximize the number of letters left for
the rest of the registered name.
GAYHEART
CORGIS
Corgis have been in my life since 1952. The Gayheart kennel name began in
West Virginia in the 1960’s and proudly I am a registered AKC Breeder of Merit. The name comes from the French words coeur gai meaning happy heart. At
the time, I couldn’t think of a name for my kennel and Corgis ARE cheerful and
happy dogs. Gayheart seemed an appropriate adaptation from the French.
KINGDOM
KENNELS
In spite of the fact that my old buddy, Peg Mickelson (who was blunt beyond
discretion), told me it sounded like a religious cult, Kingdom Kennels was born
of a much simpler altruism. Kingdom Kennels was my imaginary kennel when
I was a child and morphed into my dream kennel when I reached my teens.
Why Kingdom? I recall a book titled Keys of the Kingdom (I think it was later made into a movie.) and I thought it would be cool to have a dog with the
name ‘Kingdom’s Key.’

Betty and I had been friends for about 12 years and had discussed having
a kennel for about four years. Her breed of choice was the Maltese and she
eventually had a puppy on order. I had met Carolyn and Louis Snidow and had
a Corgi puppy on order from them. The puppy was given the name ‘Mickleknox Kingdom Sky.’ Louis let me know that a friend had told him ‘Mickleknox’
was a Welsh word. He and Carolyn liked the word and, therefore, had adopted
it for their kennel name. Betty was happy with the name ‘Kingdom.’ We purchased an inexpensive four-room bungalow, added the puppies, and Kingdom
Kennels was born.

ALCYNDON
The name of our kennel, Alcyndon, is made up by using the first syllable of the
names of our three children, Alan, Cynthia and Donna, in their birth order.
ANTIETAM
CORGIs
We found a very simple way to name our kennel. Antietam Corgis came about
since we have quarter horses, Antietam Quarter Horses, and we lived in
Sharpsburg, MD at the time near the Antietam Battlefield — therefore, Antietam Corgis was a logical choice for a kennel name.
APPELBO
When I started in Newfies, I wanted something with a little historical significance. Since one theory of the origins of Newfoundlands was the crossing
of Viking Black Bear dogs and Native Indian canines, I chose the little town’s
name where my maternal grandfather immigrated from — Appelbo, Sweden.
I guess you can’t suppress the history teacher lurking inside me. It equally
holds true for our dear little Corgi folk since there is the possibility of Viking
hounds wooing little native Welsh girls!
APRHYS
When my family entered the world of Pembroke Welsh Corgis, we knew we
would eventually need a kennel name when it came time to breed our first
litter. My parents are both really into genealogy, and so were well aware of the
fact that my family had Welsh ancestors. The Welsh family we had descended
from was known in the States as the Price family. So researching back, the
origins of the surname Price in Wales was “Ap Rhys,” which means literally “Of
Rhys” or “Son of Rhys.” Ap Rhys was eventually joined together as ApRhys,
and over the years evolved into Pryce and eventually the Americanized spelling of Price. Our kennel name became Aprhys and is a homage to our Welsh
ancestors, who I am sure would approve of our choice in dogs.

What’s your name?

BANNER
A brief background to my kennel name — Banner was my grandmother Emily’s maiden name. I always thought it was such a pretty name and, when I was
younger, I said that if I had a child, I would give him or her the first name Banner. Well, by the time I got into Corgis, it was pretty clear that I wasn’t having
kids in this lifetime, so I decided that the Corgi puppies I brought into the world
would carry my grandmother’s name. Hence, Banner Pembroke Welsh Corgis.
BY HIS GRACE
Corgis were love at first sight for me. They are surely one of God’s coolest creations! I am blessed to have them in my life. Many years ago when I actually
had the privilege of becoming a Corgi breeder, I felt it was only ‘by His grace’
so I chose that as my kennel name!
BYENDEBROK
When I was searching for a name so many years ago, I came across a book
of old English names. The name Byendebrok is a phonetic spelling for being
by a brook. It was published in a tax account of a farmer who lived by a brook.
He was described, as were all of his holdings, as byendebrok. My family property in Connecticut sits beside two brooks and a “creek” backs my home in
Abilene, Texas. Sorry, in West Texas we don’t have many brooks if any.
CARLINS KENNELS
I came up with my kennel name Carlins Kennels after MUCH searching and
thought before deciding on the Gaelic name for “Little Champions.” Thank
goodness it didn’t jinx me to use that name, as I have been recognized as an
AKC Breeder of Merit since then! Carlins Kennels has been registered with
AKC.
CARTERHALL
Although I haven’t bred a litter in eight years, here is the story: Joe chose
Carter Hall as his kennel name based on the Carter Hall estate in Virginia
since he was descended from the early Carter settlers of Virginia many generations back and was very interested in genealogy. After we were married I
pointed out that removing the space would allow us space for another letter
in the name on the registration form, so it has been Carterhall from that point
forward.
CIREGNA
I chose Ciregna as a hobby kennel name. Ciregna was the small, alpine village in Northern Italy where my grandparents Louis Mozzochi and Francesca
Apizzi immigrated from sailing to Ellis Island in New York City.

CORGARD

Just a few years ago (30!!!), after I had whelped my first litter, we were trying
to think of a kennel name to put on the puppies. Our son, Erik, was four or five
years old and transformers were the huge toy that everyone had. He wanted
our kennel name to be Optimus Prime who was the good transformer guy. But
I ultimately talked him out of it by way of explaining that we could combine corgi with guardian since Optimus would guard our puppies. The name chosen
was Corguard. However, when the papers came back from the AKC, the name
was spelled C o r g a r d without the ‘u.’ Needless to say, Corgard has stuck all
these years. And, yes, the Optimus Prime figurine is still in the bottom drawer
in the spare basement where the pups are whelped!
My co-breeder, Michele Pohl, comes into the picture with my first litter. I was
going to keep a male and had another male who was evaluated by my first
mentor, Ruth Lerda. She was rather ‘iffy’ about him. As this was my first litter,
she explained everything that I should be looking for in a pet versus a show
dog. A few weeks later a friend of mine took him to a match and he went Best
In Match so I decided to run on two males. A short time after this I got a call
from a gal who was looking for her first Corgi. I wanted to know if she would
be willing to show. She lived a few miles from me and I thought it would be a
good fit. Also, her sister had shown Tibetan Terriers and the gal herself had
shown horses in the past. This gal turned out to be Michele Pohl who came to
the house and fell in love with Rudy (Ch. Corgard’s Santa In Disguise). At his
first show, Rudy went on to BOB and a Group 3 from the classes. I will never
forget the call I got from Michele when she put a group one on him!!! The rest
is history. We’ve been breeding together with the kennel name of Corgard for
30+ years.
DALARNO
My kennel name came about when I was living in a foster home. My foster parents were from a town in Sweden called Darlarna (accent on the first
syllable is strongest). I always loved that word and changed the spelling and
pronunciation a bit and came up with Dalarno. Later when I really started
breeding dogs I found out that Dalarno was a great name since no one had
ever used it before!
DEER MEADOW
FARM
Although we are not breeders and Deer Meadow Farm is not an official ‘kennel’ name, it is the name of our horse farm established in 1977. The farm was
named Deer Meadow because of our love of the white tail deer living on our
farm. Each spring we look forward to seeing the deer bring their babies out
into the meadows and pastures. The deer graze right beside the horses in the
pastures. We got our first Corgi in 1981 that became a Deer Meadow Farm
Corgi!
DREAMCAST
Dreamcast was formed in 1999 when we got our first Corgi show dog,
Tresaith’s Dollymixture Dream. The plan was for Mike to show Dolly in Junior
Showmanship, but he took a real interest in the breed ring as well and the
rest, as they say, is history. Mike has been active in the Conformation ring
since January 2000, and brought the whole family along with him as his parents are also involved in the sport of Purebred Dogs.

FAIRVIEW
For once I don’t have much to say! The origin of my kennel name Fairview
seemed to be a logical choice because, at the time I became a breeder, we
lived on Fairview Road. Now, how simple is that?
FAIRWAY CORGIS
Although I am no longer a breeder (which doesn’t mean I won’t again someday), the kennel name Fairway Corgis was, not surprisingly, derived from
playing golf. I was sort of forced into golfing when I accompanied my husband
on company meetings where many of the men played golf. On one of our golf
outings, we happened upon a home that was for sale on a golf course. By
then we were both avid golfers so it was a natural leap to purchase the house
and name our kennel Fairway Corgis. Many of my dogs’ names were derived
from golfing terms; i.e., Fairway’s Golden Bear, Fairway’s Puttin’ For Par, Fairway’s Bogey Doggie, and many more.
FOXLEIGH
I like Corgis for their foxy faces and expressions so I wanted a kennel name
with fox in it but many had already been taken. I didn’t want a real long name
as I wanted to be able to have it be part of my dogs’ registered names. I began
with the word Fox and personalized it with my middle name, Leigh. The long
and the short of it — Foxleigh!
FOXTALE
I purchased my first PWC in 1984 but it was a male and I had no grand plans
at that time to become a “breeder.” And as luck would have it, a good friend
of mine who is one of my fox hunting friends was interested in breeding a
litter but wasn’t able to whelp and raise the puppies. So we worked out a plan
whereby I would whelp and raise the puppies. At that time, I began to contemplate what I would use as a kennel name since one of the resulting puppies was meant to be mine and I was going to use “my” kennel name when
the puppy was to be registered with AKC. I spent a long time pondering that
name choice and wanted it to represent my love of the country in which I was
living — my fox hunting community. My initial thought was to make the kennel
name Brandywine as I was living in the Brandywine Valley and hunting with
the Brandywine Hounds. So that very first puppy did sport the kennel name of
Brandywine. But it was but one puppy and I wasn’t listed as the breeder since
I did not own, or co-own, the bitch.

Fast-forward several years to the time when I had fallen for showing and
breeding hook, line and sinker. Now I needed to find a kennel name that would
be a “keeper.” I was spending many hours on the road traveling to dog shows
and there was lots of time to “think!” My thoughts turned to what drew me to
the PWC in the first place —it is, of course, because of my love of fox hunting and the red fox, a love that has not wavered over the years. So the PWC
looks like a “Fox” but is different in that they have no bush, or “tail.” So then
it became obvious that the kennel name should be Foxtail. But since there is
no “tail” but there are, and would be, many stories, or “tales,” to tell over the
years, it quickly became FOXTALE.

FXHNT
My kennel name is FXHNT. I originally spelled it Foxhunt. I dropped the vowels to accommodate more letters in a dog’s name, as 25 characters was the
max allowed years ago, and my kennel name was then Fxhnt. Before computers, we entered a dog show by handwriting on an entry form and received a
photocopy of the entry. I was an architecture student in college and my lettering was over the top and embellished. At the Monmouth County Kennel Club,
the superintendent had capitalized all the letters. Wow, now my kennel name
is in bold face type in the catalogue and easy to read. A win win. I now breed
and show Norwich Terriers. One of my first bitches was registered Top Drawer
Aunt Pittypat FXHNT. I was showing her one day and a gentleman, whom I
knew to be a very competitive agility judge, approached me and asked: “What
is an F-X-H-N-T?” and “How to l get one?” I laughed and laughed. Funny, my
prefix could become an appellation.
GLADORAH
Gladorah is a kennel name I made up based on the meaning of several words!
Glad = Happy and orah (the end of my name Deborah) = Aura. All corgis
should have a Happy Aura!
HUM’NBIRD
My kennel name Hum’nbird was the abbreviation made for me by my late
mentor, Pat Jenson (Larchmont Corgis), in the late 1980’s, when I lived in California. Pat said the name of my horse-training stable, Hummingbird Hill Farm,
was too long for AKC registration, so she created my ‘short cut’ kennel name.
It has stuck, and I think my dogs have done very well in Pat’s memory.
JOURNEY’S END
Actually I’ve never bred dogs. Journey’s End Farm was the name of my paint
horse breeding business in the 80’s and 90’s. My first Corgi came without a
kennel name so he conveniently got the farm name. Journey’s End came from
being at the “end of the earth” as one horse transport company driver put it
when he arrived to pick up a horse in the early days when breeding horses
was still a thought and not an actual reality. I lived on a dirt road past the city
limits of Ridgecrest, in Kern County, California. The other Corgis who have
come without kennel names, the rescues, all have Journey’s End appended to
their names.
LET ALONE CREEK
FARM
The creek that borders the back half of our property is named Let Alone
Creek. We chose that as the name for our farm and our kennel.
LLANERCHFENS
KENNEL
Llanerch is used as a location name in Wales and is also the name of the town
where I grew up outside of Philadelphia. Fens is Welsh for ferns which we
have on our property. So the kennel name Llanerchfens is to recognize Welsh
corgis, Welsh location, and our love for ferns.

MOONLIGHT
CORGIS
Thirty-six years ago, my late husband and I bought a house on the water in
Norfolk. The back of our house faces east and when the full moon rises over
the river it lights the water up. I began naming all my horses with the prefix
“Moonlight.” When I transitioned into dogs, it just made sense to me to use
Moonlight as my kennel name.
MORNINGSTAR
Morningstar is an area under the Skyline Drive where I would ride my horses
as a carefree child living in Page County, Virginia. When I left “The Valley,” I
took Morningstar as my stable name and many years later it flowed into my
kennel name. It takes me back to my “happy place!” I bred many dogs together with Dalarno, my friend Carrie Harris. Some of our dogs share both
kennel names such as GCh. Ch. Dalarno Nite Song At Morningstar who was
the first Gold Grand Champion in Pembrokes. He retired with 12 Best In
Shows and 70 Group One wins.
PAGET
My kennel name (only used on a Schipperke) is Paget. The name comes from
the Parish I stayed in while in Bermuda. This is where I met my first corgi,
Beau.
PEMINTENN
The story of how I got my kennel name, Pemintenn, is short and sweet. About
30 years ago I was on an email list on Prodigy (pre-Corgi-L and Showpem-L),
which was a list of fellow Corgi lovers and show people. My sign-off was not
my name but rather a self-termed identification or screen name, i.e., Pem in
TN, which evolved into Pem in 10. A year later I met a friend from the Prodigy
Corgi list at the National who called out to me: “Hey, Peminten.” It was the first
time I had heard the three words run together as one word. For the rest of the
National Show, I was introduced as Pemintenn. I liked it, and the name stuck!
PICKWICK CORGIS
In 2012 our lovely tri-colored bitch, Cora, Ch. Sunline Chorus Girl, co-owned
with Ann and Warren Phillips, was making slow but steady progress toward
her championship when Warren suggested she take a break from competition
and have a litter of puppies. The union between Ronnie, Am. Can. Ch. Ryslip
Oz Connexion, and Cora, resulted in a litter of five puppies whelped on July
11, 2012.

Shortly after the birth, Ann and Warren said, “Now you need a kennel name.”
Of course a Welsh name was our first thought, but after researching “all things
Welsh” we found the language very difficult to pronounce. The fall back was
to consider something British. At the time, I was reading The Pickwick Papers
by one of my favorite authors, Charles Dickens. There it was —“Pickwick” —
the perfect name for our kennel. With over 800 mostly charming and so very
British characters in his works we would have endless names for this litter and
for any future litters we might have.
PUTNAM
Jane McCormick
Putnam was established in 1988 and I decided on the kennel name by using
my maiden name. I am no longer a breeder but do have two Corgis at home
and many of my puppies went on to have successful show careers.

SUNLINE CORGIS
Warren and Ann Phillips
The name Sunline Corgis came about soon after we had purchased our first
(second generation for our household) Corgi from Roughouse Kennels in
New York. We had driven up to Balston Spa, a quaint, small town in NewYork
where the summer dog shows are held in the arena section of the fairgrounds.
The shows cover a five-day period. When you arrive in your motor home or
pulling your trailer, you are assigned a spot and, once in that spot, you don’t
move your rig for the entire period! The weather at that time of year is quite
hot and muggy, but everyone around is friendly and helpful.
One afternoon, our family was sitting on chairs outside our trailer discussing
what we would select for a kennel name so that we could register our first
litter of puppies. We had been mulling this issue over for some time and had
wanted it to be a family project in which we all had an equal say. Warren and I
hadn’t come up with anything that we really liked. Our son, who was 13 at the
time, had just done a wood block drawing of our trailer, incorporating the name
Sunline into the artwork of his drawing. He reminded us of the drawing and the
name just seemed to fall into place. That wood-block print that he had done
in art class in seventh grade is still one of our favorite prints and the name
permanently became our kennel logo.
TADHGLYN
CORGIS
Although I am no longer breeding, my kennel name is Tadhglyn Corgis. I got
my first corgi when I was in 3rd grade. My father went to the downtown library
and came back with the puppy name ‘Tadgh’ (pronounced ‘Teg’) which he
claimed was the name of an old Welsh King. In later years, I checked this
out further and think that Tadhg really was an Irish/Keltic name. When I lived
in Washington, D.C. and first started breeding, I co-owned a Corgi with Diane
Gaskins and she had named her ‘Deli.’ I also lived on a wooded cul-de-sac,
which I thought of as a dell, or perhaps a glen. So I added glen to the name
Tadhg – and, voila, the kennel name Tadhglyn was born.
TRESAITH
When I was looking for a kennel name 23 years ago when we first bred our
first Champion, I did not have to look far, as all around the house were photos
of where I was born in Wales and where we took two weeks’ family holidays
every summer with all my Welsh relatives. A tent on the beach was great for
the adults, with their stove to boil water for tea, and cousins enjoyed playing
on the rocks and in the freezing seawater and climbing over cliffs to the next
beach cove, Pembryn Beach or Aberporth. Tresaith was the loveliest hidden
beach and my father’s mother had a house on the cliff. We would rent two
bungalows next to each other every August and the best holidays ever were
spent there. In 2013, my cousins all sat together on Tresaith Beach just like
we did 45 years earlier for the same photo.

As my father’s brother immigrated to Cape Town, South Africa, it was really
extra special as he brought his three daughters to England every summer.
I was actually the tenth generation born on the farm a mile from Tresaith.
My father was, at that time in 1944, a fireman in London, so he had sent my
mother home to her family for my birth. Most of my life I grew up in Hampshire,
England, as my father was a Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at Southampton University so I went to a girl’s school in Southampton. We lived in
Chandlers Ford located between Winchester and Southampton.
Tresaith is a registered AKC kennel name now.

TRI’D N TRU
Tri’d N Tru represents my start in showing and breeding. My first show Corgi
was CH Lost River Dream Come Tru (‘Trudy’). I took the Tru from her name.
My second was/is (he’s still living and turned 15 in December 2015), a redheaded tri, CH Putnam Forever Splendor (‘Pete’). The Tri was for him. The
expression ‘tried and true’ is often used to describe something proven good,
desirable, reliable, dependable and trustworthy. I believe this describes the
character of our breed pretty well!
WEDGEMANOR
Wedgemanor was the name my husband and I came up with for our farm
in Maryland. It was located in Maryland near the Pennsylvania, Maryland,
and Delaware borders — an area that is referred to as ‘the Wedge.’ As my
husband was always calling me the “Lady” of the Manor, we combined the
two. Wedgemanor served us well for a small Arabian horse farm and later as
Wedgemanor Corgis when I started breeding Corgis. The kennel name has
come with me to Pennsylvania where I have had my first Pennsylvania-bred
Corgis.
WOODSEDGE
I had shown and bred Jack Russell terriers (now Parson Russell terriers, but
this was prior to AKC recognition) under the kennel name Beau Jeste, but
wanted something different when I got my first Corgi. I considered Revelstone
(having just finished reading the amazing fantasy series, “The Chronicles of
Thomas Covenant” by Stephen Donaldson), but thought it sounded too much
like Revelmere, the English kennel.

I was living in a little house that had a 1/4-mile strip of woods behind it, separating my back yard from I-83, so I went with Woodsedge. When I moved
to South Carolina 13 years ago, I was very happy to find a new house with
woods on two sides of the backyard, so Woodsedge is still applicable.
WYNFOX
Wynfox combines part of our last name—WYN taken from VanWyen and the
word FOX as the Corgi standard states: “The head should be foxy in shape
and appearance.” Our goal was to clearly connect our kennel name to our
name while limiting the total number of letters so as to leave plenty of letter spaces for naming registered puppies. When people see Wynfox, I think
everyone knows the connection to us. We had originally considered either
Foxhollow (but that was too long and already being used) or Vancor. Vancor
ended up being used for my Pembroke Welsh Corgi artwork.
WYTSTONE
The earliest record in my father’s genealogy on his mother’s side mentions
a family home or settlement Whitestone in Scotland. My husband, Bill, and I
changed Whitestone to Wytstone and that’s really all there was to it!

2016 POTOMAC SPECIALTY
April 20-22, 2016
The 39th Potomac Specialty incorporated fun, successes and
celebrations for exhibitors, club members and friends. Our
Roundup at the Corgi Corral began last summer with a hard
working group who volunteered to chair the show committees
and bring the wild west to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I can’t say
enough about these individuals. Their support, dedication and

Endless hours of hard work led up to the actual Specialty and I thank all who devoted their time and efforts to
accomplish all of the “before the Specialty begins” tasks. And, a huge thanks to all - members, friends of the
Club, judges and exhibitors – who helped put on a fabulous Specialty while on site. From arrival on Tuesday
evening through closing the trailer doors on Saturday morning, member volunteers made themselves available
wherever and whenever needed.
It is also worth noting that all of our specialty trophies by Linda Ozelis and specialty ribbons were member
sponsored. A special thank you to all who graciously donated. Please visit the Potomac website to view a list of

I shared the following with the 2016 chairs in a thank you e-mail and I would like to share with the membership
as well as I believe that the message applies to all members of the Potomac Club:
“Your efforts, which began for many last summer, continued to make our Specialty a favorite among exhibitors.
I know this because many exhibitors, outside of our Club, took the time to tell me how much they enjoy attending Potomac and that it is their favorite regional Specialty. In addition, I was asked by one exhibitor how we do
it - how do we all get along? I found that a huge compliment to our Club and to each of you.”

forward to working with Denise Hartley, Specialty Chair, and Gigi
Fitzgerald, Specialty Co-Chair, as they bring the 2017 Specialty
to life.

Seeing a trend for eyes that are round and not oval as well as feet that are too round or short toed. Most of the
exhibits were balanced in angulation, but could have had more on each end in order to cover more ground with
each step. Still, it is better to have a dog in balance in somewhat reduced angulation than to be slightly angled
on one end and well angled on the other. The first dog will take more steps to cover the ground and will be
more tired at the end of the day than a better angled dog. The second dog will eventually break down from the
stress of being out of balance. Overall proportions were good as were length of loin. There were very few who
did not have enough ribbing, which is an improvement.

RH Tri with excellent overall breed type. Very good outline with good proportions of height to body length
could have been a bit longer to be ideal. Lovely head, with correct proportions of muzzle to skull, dark eyes
somewhat rounded, correct ear size and placement. Could have a bit more underjaw. Good shoulder assembly

fairly well laid back and excellent return of upper arm so that elbow is underneath the top of the shoulder blade.
Good reach of neck blending well into level topline. Good bone, feet slightly rounded. He was very balanced
when moving on the go around, to be ideal, he could have covered more ground with each step. Clean coming
and going. A handsome lad.
2. LIONHARTS MORE THAN MIRROR APPEARANCE (GCh. Martindale Black Bart x GCh. Lionhart’s
Cameo Appearance) Breeder: Daniel Hartman, Debbie Royster & Judy Manley. Owners: Denise Brown and
Daniel Hartman. R&W well up to size. Excellent overall proportions of height to body length – a bit longer
than pup above. Lovely reach of neck with front legs well under body. He had a lovely head with excellent
proportions of muzzle to skull, eyes of correct size, a bit on the round side, correctly placed and good sized
ears carried well. Good bone on slightly rounded feet. Moved well all ways, but a bit high in the rear on the day.
3. MYSTICAL SMOOTH BY SANTANA (Ch. Greenwood’s Livin’ It Up x Ch. Mystical Livin’ On A Prayer)
Breeder/Owner: Deborah L. Beal. Agent: Joan Scott. RH Tri of very good overall breed type. He had good
proportions of height to body length with a fairly long neck that blended well into his level back. Lovely
headpiece with correct proportions of muzzle to skull, good ear size and set, dark eyes correctly set in
skull. Good bone on correct feet. Clean going a bit close coming. He moved well on the side with a slightly
decreased front reach that put him a bit out of balance on the go around.
This was a very nice class with dogs in all stages of development.
1. GREENWOODS MIDNIGHT FLYER (Linincorgi’s Don’t Stop Believin x Ch. Greenwoods Midnight Melody)
Breeders/Owners: Deidre Rodgers & Mary Greenwood. RH Tri with very good overall breed type with very
good proportions of height to length. Fair reach of neck blended well into level back. Excellent ribbing, short
loin, good bend of stifle. Lovely head with excellent proportions of muzzle to skull. Dark eyes, kind expression,
excellent ear shape, size and set. Eyes a bit on the round side. He was a good mover all around, though to be
ideal, I would like to see his front reach extend a bit more on the go around. I was pleased to award him BEST
PUPPY.
2. BRUMBAER’S MY AFFAIR (Brumbaer’s Krome Bumpers x Kaybe Bottoms Up) Breeder: Sherryn
Viebrock, Sue King & Karen Fruhmann. Owner(s): Susan King and Karen Fruhmann. Handsome red and white
male with very good overall breed type. He showed very good reach of neck that blended well into his back.
Good prosternum out front, well ribbed up with short loin. Lovely head and expression, eyes toned with color
of coat with rims a bit loose. Good proportions of muzzle to skull with correct ear size, shape and set. He was
somewhat soft in topline today and movement was a bit loose compared to the one above. Overall, a nice boy.
3. CARLINS SUNSHINE ON A CLOUDY DAY (GCh. Stafford’s Perfect Storm x Dogwood Moonwalking Party
Girl) Breeder/Owner: Judith A. Bolin. Another R&W with lovely overall breed type. He had good proportions of
height to body length, though his front assembly was set a bit forward on his chest. Fairly good reach of neck
with good prosternum in front. Excellent proportion of muzzle to skull with eyes on the light side that are well
shaped and obliquely set. Lovely bend of stifle in rear. Good bone, toes on the short side without oval shape.
Clean going, close coming, decreased front reach on sidegait put him out of balance with his drive in the rear.
Rather loose in motion today, most likely due to his stage of development. A nice boy.
4. LAUREL SPARK OF IMAGINATION (GCh. Baymoor Imagination, RA PT OA x Laurel By The Grace Of
God, CDX OA NAJ) Breeders: Karen Butterworth & Frances Gammie. Owners: Nicole M. Force and James
M. Force. Red and white somewhat smaller than those above. He had very good overall proportion of height
to body length and good reach of neck that blended well into his level topline. To be ideal he could have more
bone leading down into his good feet. He is balanced in angulation front to rear and moves in balance on the
side, but could take fewer steps to cover the same amount of ground as those above. He had good ear size
and shape as well as obliquely set eyes that are a bit round instead of oval. He was rather distracted today
looking for “bonus bait” that might be on the mats.

1. DOUBLE G’S IT’S FIVE O’CLOCK SOMEWHERE AT PERI LANE (Ch. Greenwoods Fame And Fortune
x Double G’s Catamarans Rolling In The Deep) Breeders: Dr. Marthina Greer DVM & Kathryn Griffith. Owners:
Janet Bodin and Dr. Marthina Grerr. Red and white with excellent proportions of height to body length. He had
good reach of neck blending well into a level topline. He had a lovely head with correct proportions of muzzle
to skull, with skull flat appearing between the ears. He could have a bit more depth of underjaw. Larger ears,
well set on and carried. Dark eyes a bit too on the round side but well placed. He had good prosternum in front
and good ribbing with a short loin. He did display a tendency to stand with his back legs under his body, with
rear pasterns not at right angle with the ground. He was slightly close coming and wide going. When viewed
from the side, he held together well with a balanced gait though he took a few more steps than ideal to cover
the ground. Correct bone right down into good feet. A handsome fellow.
2. AUBREY’S EASTER CANDY (GCh. Ciregna Thats Amore x Ch. Aubrey’s River of Dreams) Breeder:
Cynthia & Vincent Savioli & Robin Faszold. Owner(s): Dee Ambrose-Stahl and Cynthia Savioli and Vincent
Savioli. Agent: Sherri Hurst. Another lovely red and white with excellent proportions of height to body length.
Shoulder layback somewhat upright with good reach of neck into excellent, level topline both standing and
moving. A bit narrow throughout the body which will most likely broaden with age. A bit long in loin. He had a
very pleasing head and still had that sweet “puppy” look to his face. Lightish brown eyes were well set and a
bit round. Ears of medium size correctly shaped though he had a tendency to hold them more upright when he
was interested in something – which was most of the time! He was a fairly balanced mover on the side with just
a slight decrease in front reach.
3. STAFFORD’S VALENTINE B MINE AT CARLINS (Sandfox Cadenza x GCh. Stafford’s It Must Be Magic.
Breeder/Owner: Cecelia Cassady. Sable and white with very good overall proportions of height to body length.
Good reach of neck which blended well into his back. Slight rounding of croup. Good bend of stifle. Handsome
in head with excellent proportions of muzzle to skull. Could have a bit more depth in underjaw. Light eyes
distracted from his expression, eyes well set, a bit round. Excellent ear size, shape, placement and carriage.
Close coming, wide going. Fairly balanced on the side with a slight decrease in front reach.
4. BRIGADOON’S DAY DREAM BELIEVER (Aberlee Take It To The Limit x Brigadoon Lady Of The Manor)
Breeder: Betty Cook. Owners: Warren Phillips and Ann Phillips and Betty Cook. Red and white with good
proportions of height to body length though a bit more compact all around than those above. Slightly shorter
in neck, it blended well into his back. Coat gave the appearance of a slight dip in topline which was disproved
on physical exam. He did have a slight fall off at the croup. He had a lovely face and lovely expression with
a somewhat round but dark eye. Excellent proportions of muzzle to skull with medium sized ears of correct
shape and set. He held his topline well on the move with a balanced, but busy, side gait. Loose coming and
going. A pretty boy just out of puppyhood.
AMATEUR OWNER HANDLER DOGS (2 entered, 0 absent)
1. TUSCANY MICHAELANGELOS MASTERPIECE (Ch. Merthyr Wanda Be Jean Valjean x Sunline Hopeful
Hare) Breeders: Jennifer Crivelli, Ann Phillips & Warren Phillips. Owners: Jennifer Crivelli. Red and white
with lovely overall breed type and excellent proportions of height to body length. He had good reach of neck
that blended well into his backline. Short loin, good bend of stifle. Handsome face with correct proportions of
muzzle to skull, his dark oval eyes were correctly set. His medium sized ears could have been a touch larger
to be ideal but were of the correct shape and well set. He had good bone and excellent feet. Was at the upper
limit of length of leg to maintain his correct proportions. A balanced mover on the side, he could have been
cleaner coming and going. A nice boy!
2. FOXGRIN TIGHT ON TIME (Birdwing Air And Simple Gifts x Gayhearts BT Tobi Thyme Chasn, RA MX
MJB NAP NJP) Breeder/Owner: Brooke Patterson. A red headed tricolor that was a showy fellow – always
on! He had fairly good proportions of height to body length, but to be ideal he could have been longer in body
length. His shoulder was fairly well laid back but he was a bit short in upper arm. He showed good prosternum
in front and good bend of stifle in the rear. He was a bit too long in rear pastern (hock) which tended to make
him higher in the rear than in the front. He had a happy face (always seemed to be smiling) with eyes that
toned with the color of his red color that were a bit on the round side but with correct oblique placement.

Excellent ear size, shape and placement. He was wide coming and going. He had a balanced side gait but to
be ideal, he could cover more ground with each step.
BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOGS (3 entered, 0 absent))
1. TOWNHILL ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET (GCh. Ciregna Thats Amore x GCh. Townhill Penny
Lane) Breeders: Mark & Holly Russo. Owners: Mark Russo and Holly Russo and Ellen Childs. Red and
white with beautiful overall breed type and outline. He had correct proportions of height to body length. Good
prosternum in front. Good reach of neck blended well into his level topline. Good shoulder assembly with
excellent return of upper arm, often lacking in the breed. Could show a very slight fall off in croup. Well coated.
Well ribbed up with short loin. Lovely head and expression, he had correct proportions of muzzle to skull with
good depth of underjaw. While I would prefer a darker eye, it toned with the color of his coat. Eyes were oval
and obliquely set. Ears were of the correct size, shape and placement. He was clean coming and going. He
had an easy, balance, ground covering side gait with a quiet topline (no vertical movement – up and down) that
can be a rare commodity in the ring today. I was more than pleased to award him WINNERS DOG.
2. BROGAN LIGHT BRIGADE (GCh. Heritage Brogan Light The Lamp x GCh. Brogan Tralee) Breeder/
Owner: Mari Carroll. Another red and white with lovely overall breed type. Of correct size. He had good
proportions of height to body length. Shoulder was somewhat upright causing front assembly to be placed a bit
forward on the chest. His good reach of neck blended fairly well into his backline. His lovely head had correct
proportions of muzzle to skull and he had lovely dark eyes and such a kind expression when he looked at you.
Ears of good size were correctly shaped, placed and carried. He had correct bone and excellent feet. He was
clean coming and close going. He moved with balance on the side with a bit more motion over the topline than
the dog above. A lovely, typey boy, I was happy to award him RESERVE WINNERS DOG.
3. NORTHRUN CRYSMONT SANDY BOTTOM (Ch. Crysmont Black Douglas Of Marymead, THD x Northrun
Sea Heritage) Breeders: Cathy Donovan, Debbie Blais & Linda Thompson. Owners: Linda Thompson and
Deborah Blais. A handsome red headed tricolor with a lovely outline and good reach of neck blending well into
a level topline. He was slightly long in rear pastern (hock) which made him a bit high in the rear standing and
moving. Correct bladed bone, toes a bit short but feet well padded. Ribs were well sprung and carried well
back to a short, strong loin. He had a handsome head, with correct proportions of muzzle to skull, good eye

well under his body. Good bone on oval feet. He was a bit long in rear pastern (hock). He had dark eyes that
were obliquely set. Muzzle a bit long and could have more fill on the sides gives a rather plain look to the head.

Correct proportions of muzzle to skull with lovely oval, dark brown eye correctly placed in the skull. His large,
slightly rounded ears we set a bit high on his head but he could carry them correctly when he relaxed. He was
a bit close coming and going and moved on the side with a decreased front reach.

proportions of muzzle to skull, though could have been a bit broader in backskull. He had a kind eye and good
expression. His decreased rear drive threw him out of balance on the side. Not the mover of those above.

their specialty. What a warm and welcoming Club and an awesome entry!
When judging corgis they must first look like corgis – breed type—and then they must move like corgis –
soundness – one is not complete without the other. The quality was deep throughout the entry and I was able
to find the “total package” and in the right size. Corgis are to be athletic and excessive bone and size, not
only detract from desirable breed type, but contribute to a heavy, cumbersome gait. What a pleasure to find
feminine and typey bitches of the right size and scope with effortless, sound movement. A most sincere thank

TIME FOR REFLECTION: UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT

According to Guy Fisher of the AKC Judging Operations Department, there were 16 complaints of unsportsmanlike conduct this past year. He said that the three most common complaints were neglect (e.g., a dog was
left in a crate all day), a dog was abused, and a person insults another person.
I have always enjoyed PWCCP events for their professionalism and camaraderie. And although I haven’t seen
or heard of any unsportsmanlike conduct during any PWCCP club events, this might be a good time for self-reflection and asking ourselves if we are proud of the way we are behaving. We should always follow these AKC
guidelines:
1. Commit to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing
with grace.
2. Refuse to compromise our commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal
advantage or consideration into our decisions or behaviors.
3. Respect the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs.
4. Agree that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and appreciate the merit of competition and
the effort of competitors.
5. Welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.
6. Refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club (and our club) or ourselves while taking part in
the sport.
The American Kennel Club takes unsportsmanlike conduct very seriously. Proven unsportsmanlike conduct
could result in very serious penalties, including the inability to register a dog or litter or transfer ownership, prohibition of grooming or even holding an entered dog on the event grounds—not to mention the inability to enter
any event.

OLDEST LIVING CORGI FOR 2015
Gayle shares her thoughts about Piper’s Kiss Me Kate, “Katie”
Piper’s Kiss Me Kate, better known as Katie, was born Thanksgiving Day,
11/26/1998. Her breeder, however, may not have felt thankful because she
and her sister were not planned! On the other hand, I was thankful to buy
Katie, my first Corgi – one of many firsts she has been for me.
I wanted to try agility in addition to the obedience I had already been doing
with my Brittany. Katie became my first agility dog. My little girl measured 10
1/4 inches so had to jump 12 inches according the AKC agility regulations at
that time. Katie proved to be adaptable when she learned to weave through
toilet bowl plungers lined down my hallway. A careful dog, she rarely knocked
a bar. Katie earned these agility titles: MX, MXB, MXJ, MXP, and MJP.
Katie and I also took up obedience. At first, I had difficulty with the “sit”
command; I couldn’t tell if short legged Katie actually was sitting! Then I
found unlike previous dogs I’d worked with, Katie was stubborn; luckily, a treat
reward influenced her to cooperate. Later she earned a CDX, my first dog to
do so.
I started herding lessons with Katie, but soon I needed foot surgery and could not continue. A friend of mine
stepped in and trained Katie to herd. Eventually, my friend handled her at a trial, and Katie came away with an
HT title. Another first title for a dog of mine! (However, the judge did mention Katie would be a good candidate
for boot camp!)
Although we never got a tracking title, Katie was my first tracking dog. We started classes when she was
about 9 and shared many happy times outside in any weather.
Katie has been a loyal companion, always with me and ready to protect me. In our old age, we enjoy slow
walks and afternoon naps together. When she’s feeling feisty, she tries to boss my other dogs. She’s been a
constant in my life for 17 plus years.
My vet calls Katie, the “Miracle Dog” because Katie has survived the removal of a melanoma more than a year
ago. She has another cancer now that is inoperable. When the time comes for her to leave, I will miss her and
there will be a hole in my life.
