Amen ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter March 5, 2015 of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Ramy Garcia IV Fellow Pasig Rotarians; We have just entered our 9th month of this rotary year. This means 4 more months for PE Ner to prepare for his term. Although there the rotary year does not end till June, we only have till the end of this month to meet our goals and requirements to achieve the Presidential Citation Award. Last Tuesday, your officers and board had it's monthly meeting. The first in the agenda was the Presidential Citation requirements. After going thru them, we identified 3 items that we need to focus on. First on this list is Membership. So far after 8 months, we have only 4 been able to induct 4 new members. I know that we can still double this number before March 31. If you have someone in mind, please bring them along today. Second is the TRF. We still have 2 or 3 members from last year and 3 new members this year that are not Paul Harris Fellows. PHF is achieved if you give $1000 to the TRF. If you want to become a PHF, you can be one by giving $500 and I will cover the other half with 500 points. Im urging Rtn Ray Armas, Rtn Albert Mendiola, Rtn Garrick Ang to take advantage of this now since others are in line. Third is our Career Guidance Day that we always do every year. We are still trying to arrange if there is time to do this since the school year is about to end. In any case, we have the numbers or points required to meet and achieve the Presidential Citation. ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter March 5, 2015 Pres. Ramy Garcia IV Continuation 1. Now, Discon will be on March 20 & 21 at the Manila Hotel. We need more participants in the talent night. So far, the participants are Dir Rey Armas, Dir Jess Acantilado and Dir Garrick Ang. We need 3-5 more participants to helps out and win the competition. We have been rehearsing at the Tanghalang Pasigueno for the last month, but will be moving to our usual venue at PDG Benny's house in Valle Verde 4. Please come and join us tomorrow. Dir Rey, ikaw na bahala kay Dir Ogie at alam mo naman kung gaano kahirap yung ginagawa nyo. So far we have 14 registrants for the Discon, with 2 more to be registered today, First Lady Dj and Rtn Ben Baniel. Please let me know who else is interested so I can register you and get the same discounted rate. Our Rotary Marker is in its final stages. I have asked our contractor to add the LIGHT UP ROYARY and the END POLIO logos so satisfy some items is the Presidential Citation. Lastly, I will have to leave early today and ask PE Ner to close the meeting. I have to attend the graduation of our grade 2 students who are part of the L.E.T.S READ program in Butting Elementary School. Let us continue to be of service to other and "LIGHT UP ROTARY" Rafael A. Garcia IV Best Class President RY2014-15 Rotary Club of Pasig ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter March 5, 2015 PP Benny P. De Guzman You have to give it to Jerry Quibilan. Every now and then he invites a good material to balance our topics in Rotary. The insights plus personalities that Wilson Lee Flores interviewed before are very interesting news bits to lessen the worries for the day. He was impressed with the recollections of our PD Kel whose recollection of Fuga Island brought forth a smuggling point of the country. As usual, Jerry will never invite a guest speaker without him asking a related question on the matter. Congrats to rejuvenating new Rtn Pol Garcia. Everytime he has time, he brings his son to show what we are doing during our Rotary lunch. The election for the directors of Valle Verde Country Club was again postponed due to a writ of preliminary injunction. Our good PP Peter is thus again on the waiting list. Permanent visiting Rotarian PP Ed Lucero realized late that it is hard to win an election decided by proxy votes. PP Jun Zafra is back. Yes it is true that he is a rare breed that earns his pesos well but spends the dollars apparently on a must spend. His youngest apo was born prematurely and they had to spend a lot of dollars for his survival. Prayers are still needed although the baby is out of danger. There are no price increases in all his services being offered though. I hope there is nothing wrong with the “niece” of Rtn Ed Sambeli. His being a no show again may mean there is something wrong like changing of the guards? When I do not pass for PFB Chito, I guess his attendance is not so good. By passing for PVP Louie he has a perfect four time attendance. Next time Chito and Louie na. This is the buddy system that we started for two weeks and abandoned once again. There is something amiss in the Community Singing. Before, when that is sang, PP Peping shouts with gusto. He noticed seguro na iba ang ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter March 5, 2015 PP Benny P. De Guzman Continuation 1. ending kaya nirecite na lang niya. PP Peter must be congratulated for his efforts. Akala niyo madali yon, kung wala kang magawang magaling madali yon but Peter has plenty to do right, and, magaling pa rin. I can just imagine the late PP Bobbit smiling. Baby Rtn Albert did well, as he usually excels in everything he touches. I would not miss the tidbits of PRO Manoj. I am missing his person. His tidbits Boss Peter took over and Peter did very well. His Lexophile is not only entertaining, it is enhancing your skills and improving your conversationalist instincts. You cannot enjoy the wits behind Lexophile without recalling the late PP Teddy Yabut. He calls dentists hand-to-mouth to exist. Not our PVP Louie and his family their hands-to-bank existence. There is something unusual in our very own PDG Raffy getting the Chair of the PCRG, the PDGs’ group. Many governors from the other districts moved around to have Raffy elected. Now, he will be too busy but his body system is adjusted to this kind of rigors. Like Wash Sycip and the rest of the tycoons per speaker Flores last week, they will never tire doing good and doing great like Raffy. Spouse Snoogie and IPP Ducky had a lot of fun during their wedding. They planned their anniversaries every four years kaya 29th February ang wedding anniversary nila. The partner of Henry Sy before, when they started at Echague Street, now Carlos Palanca St. in Quiapo was the late Senen Mendiola. Kaya dati ang SM meant Sy-Mendiola. Sa huli na lang Shoemart. Kung ako kay Senen nuon, sasabihin ko Senen Mendiola. A new Rotarian told me, si Flor pala hindi lang sa medical equipment. Like Ike Ona, he is an MD too. Nakita kasi MD Ona asking a PhD. MD naman ni Flor ay as Major Donor. ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter March 5, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra SAN FRANCISCO CLUB REVEALS FORMULA FOR GROWTH AND RETENTION OF MEMBERS Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Evening meet at a wine bar after work, share a social outing, and promote all their activities on social media like Meetup and Facebook. As the first evening club in the city, it has attracted many young professionals from Silicon Valley tech firms whose work schedules keep them from joining a more traditional club that meets for breakfast or lunch. But more than that, the evening format has helped the club grow by 30 percent since it received its charter in mid-2013. Danielle Lallement, who was its charter president, says the club has been successful because it accommodates members' preferences. "The majority of our members are in their 30s and 40s, and their financial and work obligations outside the club are great, so we cater to their needs," she says. "We are extremely flexible with our members, their attendance, their payment options, and expectations." For example, almost half the members are citizens of countries other than the U.S., so leaders dropped the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of meetings. In addition, members can easily schedule recurring dues payments online, and a PayPal credit card reader is brought to meetings to facilitate dues payment. Early on, members also decided they wanted the last meeting of the month to be a social event. Members have attended the San Francisco Ballet, visited a karaoke bar, played miniature golf, and worked with a golf pro to improve their swings. ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter March 5, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 1. Members are asked to attend at least half of all meetings but aren't pressured if they can't, especially if life events like marriage, a baby's arrival, or an increased workload claim more of their time. Club officers frequently use Skype or a conference line to join board meetings they can't attend in person. Spreading the word via social media Lallement was a member of the Rotary Club of Sparks, Nevada, before a job change brought her to San Francisco. After discovering that the city lacked an evening club, she hooked up with a core group of other former Rotary members and they began attending networking events to get the word out. They met at the San Francisco Food Bank for their first service project and announced it on Meetup, attracting several new members as a result. "Depending on the event, we would have at least two new people find us," she says. "Advertising on social media has been a big promoter for us." In addition to posting its activities on Facebook and Meetup, the club uses Eventbrite to promote and sell tickets to social events. And club members stay connected through Twitter and LinkedIn. Importance of projects Lallement, who is a registered nurse, also knew that service is important, because young people want to "get their hands dirty." With her Nevada club, she had taken part in a de-worming project and a polio immunization trip in Ghana, helped to repair cleft lips in India, and handed out bed nets to fight malaria in Zambia. The San Francisco Evening club has partnered with the nonprofit Hug It Forward and five other Rotary clubs to mix and pour cement ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter March 5, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 2. for a high school in Guatemala. The club was also awarded its first district grant last year for a Seed for America project that provided free training in computer programming to students in San Francisco. Other projects closer to home have included cleaning up trails and digging trenches at San Francisco's Mount Sutro and joining with Interact club members to build houses for Habitat for Humanity. Though the club was the first evening option in the city for Rotary members, it's no longer the only one in the area. Its success has led to the creation of the Rotary Club of Rafael Evening, and two provisional clubs Mid-Peninsula Evening and San Francisco SOMA. "The idea has really taken off," Lallement says. "There's no reason this can't be done anywhere."
