We are coming off an unusually cold and wet winter, which has delayed green up on the Bermuda grass tees, fairways and rough. It has also been a tough winter with weed pressure and with the amount of rainfall we have had doesn’t leave many opportunities to control. There are some areas that are just starting to grow, and will continue to take off as the soil temps get warmer. The greens are in great shape, I would like to thank all of you for your patience while the greens have been frozen and frosty quite a bit this winter. The biggest complaint we get about the golf course is the conditions of our bunkers. On April 7th we are scheduled to have 2 bunkers sprayed with a polymer liner between the gravel and sand layers. This will keep gravel from coming up into the sand and will help prevent washouts with heavy rains. The 2 bunkers will be, the big one on #2 (right side), and the small one on the chipping green. In an effort to make our bunkers more playable and to keep gravel out, we have been shoveling out contaminated sand and adding new premium bunker sand. This will cause the bunkers to play soft soon after the addition of sand, but after some rain they will compact and create better playing conditions. A few thing coming up as far as maintenance goes, aerification dates will be April 15th and 16th. We will be working on mulching beds and trees next couple weeks, and pine straw will be spread on beds and natural areas around the course. The maintenance staff is anxious to see everyone out on the course and remind you to help us by properly repairing ball marks, filling divots with sand, raking bunkers behind yourselves, and properly disposing of cigarettes and trash. Linen fee. $50 refundable deposit. Improved Pace of Play Guidelines ~ 3:45 Minutes. For every non par 3 cart path only hole add 2 minutes to the total time. Our #1 complaint is pace of play. This is a common issue not only at MCCC but throughout the golf industry. Most commonly complaints come from waiting on fivesomes. The staff is not concerned with fivesomes as long as they are considerate to others and play in the allotted time. Group rights: As long as groups are within the pace of play guideline and within one hole of the next group they are not required to let players through. Anytime a group falls a hole or more behind they are obligated to close the gap or let quicker players through. In the near future each hole monument will have a clock. Playing at the proper pace with a tee time at 12 each tee the clock will show 12. If you fall 5 minutes behind the clock will show 12:05. Any group falling a hole or more behind and falling behind the desired pace is to let groups waiting through. If groups are not allowing players through they will be documented. Those documented on more than one occasion will be subject to suspension. Pace of Play Suggestions: -Call your food and drink order in before making the turn. A menu will be placed on the 8th tee (May 1st). -Plan your shot while riding to your ball, or while others are playing. Be ready when it is your turn. -Go directly to your ball; don’t follow others unless assisting in a search -When on paths only, take several clubs with you to your ball. -Be efficient with pre-shot routine -Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green towards the next tee -Unless experienced, play standard tees, not the championship tees. If eligible play the new forward tees. Pace of Play Rewards: Collect your golf receipt upon checking in. If you play in 3hrs and 45 minutes or less turn your receipt into the golf shop. On the first Friday of each month a name will be drawn with the winner receiving $100 credit. Pool and shuffleboard tables in the ballroom can be left as is or will be covered and used as either serving tables or a bar. First and foremost the club must be sound financially. Our goal has been to reduce debt while improving the overall facility. Across FINANCIAL the nation golf course total income has decreased 35% since 2005-2006. MCCC has withstood the economic downturn better than most. However, there has been a loss in income of approximately stability 9% since 2006 totaling approximately $162,000. In 2013 total income fell over $44,000 from prior year. For us to pay the debt and to also improve our financial bottom line, expenses have to be monitored more closely than ever. There is a fine line. Expenses can be cut, but we do not want to sacrifice aspects of the club. Working with the staff new schedules were made to maximize efficiency. With changes in each department the staff reduced overall payroll $94,513 from prior year and $159,771 from payroll in 2005. Other expenses have been reduced $62,389 from prior year. Overall total expenses decreased by $156,902 from prior year, leading to a net income increase of $105,744. Debt has been reduced to $704,901. Debt has been reduced by nearly 1 million dollars in the last 7 years. Club is on schedule to have debt reduced to under $500,000 by the end of 2014. SUMMARY OF INCOME STATEMENT OCTOBER 2012 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2013 2013 2008-2012 2003-2007 INCOME $1,781,453.00 $1,836,583.00 $1,782,970.00 TOTAL COST OF SALES $259,759.00 $275,566.00 $261,257.00 PAYROLL $582,140.00 $659,105.00 $698,322.00 EXPENSES $646,785.00 $694,757.00 $661,108.00 TOTAL EXPENSES $1,228,925.00 $1,353,862.00 $1,359,430.00 NET INCOME / LOSS $148,404.00 $42,474.00 -$16,621.00 Financial Summary October 2013 through March 2014 AWFUL WEATHER THIS WINTER! Membership has fallen slightly, to 568. Cart fee revenue is down from last year approximately $18,000 through March. However, Food & Beverage net income has increased by over 18%. Thank you social committee! Christmas Party, Valentines Dinner, March Member Dinner & ABCD Tournament meal averaged over 95 participants at each! Despite a poor winter total net income is only $7,800 worse than last year through March. Expenses have been cut $24,000 to offset loss in revenue. 2014 budget plans to pay just over $200,000 towards principle on the debt. This leaves approximately $125,000 for club improvements and overall club profit. Budgeted membership is 570. Capacity is 600. Help the club recruit new members. On average member spends over $3,000 in dues and club purchases. 30 members could result in over $100,000 additional income! This additional income would help make improvements and increase the value of your membership! Letter from 39 Year Member & Past Club President Marvin English We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to the three members who recently completed their terms on the MCCC Board of Directors – Chris Davies, Doug Creech and Mike Small. They served us very well during their terms. Chris was the driving force in1998 in the outstanding renovation and restoration of our old golf course in spite of considerable resistance. Doug and Mike also did outstanding jobs in their management and financial control of our assets, especially the lowering of our debt. These gentlemen have followed in the great leadership of many of our previous Directors, i.e., Purcell Jones, Doc Lancaster, Tom Potter et., all of whom brought this club to where it is today. The leadership of these folks leaves many guidelines and challenges for both present and future directors. Finally, we members have an obvious valuable asset in our club but none more valuable than our loyal employees. We present them daily with many challenges in the way we show our respect for them. They invariably handle these challenges well. We must always treat them as our most valuable asset. Respectfully, Marvin & Margaret English. He recently renovated Bald Head Island. Below are before and after pictures of holes 1, 2 & 17. For complete before and after pictures visit www.bhiclub.net. Bald Head Island was recently rated as the #7 course in North Carolina by golfweek magazaine. Tim Cate recently toured Morhead City Country Club. The main objective of his visit was to look at bunker improvement options, which he gave significant insight on improving the bunkers. Heavy consideration is being given to complete bunker renovation. Without question they are the weak link to overall course conditions. Mr. Cate reviewed the course master plan for improvements from 1998. Going from hole to hole he spoke of a number of opportunities including, but not limited to better bunker design and improved drainage. He raved of the views of the Newport River. Spoke freely of having an opportunity few places have, a special opportunity. Potential master plans are being developed. Drawings of potential improvements will be available in the near future. Top priorities with these improvements will be to work within the current dues structure, improved course playability and enhance course beautification. Visit www.bhiclub.net. Click on golf icon.
