FROM THE PRESIDENT…Jan James
I thought I’d get your attention with a reminder that the Annual General Meeting of the Club
has been brought forward a week to the 19th November to accommodate Vines Week. I
implore you to attend not only to ensure a quorum but to show your support or otherwise to the
Committee of Management and staff. If you have any questions or issues forward them to us or
raise them on the night and we will attempt to answer them.
In the event that a ballot is required to appoint members to the vacancies on the COM or sub
committees I also ask you to give careful consideration to the nominees and cast your vote.
In the October edition of “On The Grapevine” last year I questioned the relevance of this
monthly newsletter. I received positive comments from a handful of members but feel it is time
to ask the question again.
 Are you happy with the newsletter?
 Do you find the publication informative?
 Are we inundating members with information?
 Is it relevant and of interest or should we change direction?
I would appreciate your feedback.
Please let me know.
On the October long weekend we held the Annual Octoberfest Ambrose. The weather was
beautiful and Matt and Zac organized tables on the 1st tee and lunch was terrific. Thanks guys
for “going those extra yards”. It certainly makes a difference.
On Friday 5th October we held the Annual Trophy Presentation. It was disappointing that a
number of winners didn’t attend so we will think hard about what to do next year.
On the bright side the Club House was so packed that we had to turn away 2 groups that
hadn’t booked for dinner. A problem most restaurants would die for so we must be doing
something right! Well done to Trevor and “the Team”, and please book or don’t be
disappointed if we can’t fit you in.
On the Social side we have the Melbourne Cup “golf and lunch” on Tuesday 6th November…
$25 for members and $35 for guests playing golf, lunch only is $25.
We have the fantastic Linda McCarthy entertaining us at the Christmas Dinner on 24th
November.
Then we will be into Vines Week from 25th to 30th November.
(FROM THE PRESIDENT continued)
I realize it’s a very busy calendar but I urge members to invite their friends and attend as many
events as they are able. A week of golf will do wonders for our fitness (and weight) going into
the festive season.
In particular, with Vines Week we are aiming to raise our Club’s image and status to the next
level and see it developing into a highlight on the golfing calendar over the next 5 years and
promoting us as the premier club in the south and the place to play golf and be a member.
Finally with daylight savings upon us “Twilight” has commenced and Sevens golf starts on
22nd October so still there’s time to organize a team.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Monday 19th November 2012 commencing at 7.30 pm.
Don’t miss it. Just another way to participate in the success of our Club.
ELECTION of OFFICERS
Nominations for committee positions closed on 7th October. Because there are more than one
nomination for some positions a ballot will be necessary. Dates for voting in November are
Saturday 10th, Sunday 11th, Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th.
"Jesus Knows You're Here"
(from Bernie Lewandowski)
A burglar broke into a house one night.
He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark
said, 'Jesus knows you're here.'
He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze.
When he heard nothing more, after a bit, he shook his head and continued.
Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a
bell he heard
'Jesus is watching you.'
Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source
of the voice.
Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a
parrot.
'Did you say that?' he hissed at the parrot.
'Yep', the parrot confessed, then squawked, 'I'm just trying to warn you
that he is watching you.' The burglar relaxed. 'Warn me, huh? Who in the
world are you?' 'Moses,' replied the bird. 'Moses?' the burglar laughed.
'What kind of people would name a bird Moses?'
'The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus.'
FROM THE CAPTAIN…Barry Phillips
A huge thankyou to those who participated in the National Pink Golf Day on Sunday 14th
October 2012 and in doing so supported the Breast Cancer cause. We held a novelty Ambrose
event and approximately $1800 was raised on the day. These monies will help with research
and assist families affected directly or indirectly by breast cancer. Well done to all concerned.
The Men’s Club Championships get under way on Saturday 20th October with the final round
on Sunday 28th October. Good luck to all those participating but if you are not for whatever
reason (and you better have a good one!) please come out and follow the players around on the
final day. Fingers crossed for a close and tense finish in all grades, maybe even a playoff or two.
All members are welcome to stay for the presentations following the final day’s play with finger
food provided.
Watch out also for the Mixed Foursomes Championships to be played Sundays 11th and 18th
November with entry forms available shortly. There are limited opportunities to have your name
inscribed on the honour board and I urge all eligible members to support these major events.
Senior Pennant (now run by Golf SA) kicks off on Monday 22nd October with the first round of
our group on our home course. These veterans of the game take their match play seriously and
there are a number of handy players in the competition still playing at an elite level. Good luck
to our “kids”, Kevin Bartsch, Nigel Coles, Bob Dickson, Peter King, Laurie McLaughlin, Alex
McKinnell, myself and reserve John Williams.
Once again best of luck to those playing in the Club Championships and the upcoming Mixed
Foursomes and I’ll see you out and about on the course.
A Long Par 4!
(from Nigel Coles)
GPS technology is a great aid to golfers, particularly when playing on a
strange course that doesn't have any distance markers.
Uncertainty about how far the shot is and what club to take leads to
indecision and invariably bad golf. Having a Golf GPS goes a long way to
overcoming a lack of local knowledge, but usually you do have to download
the course information in the first place.
A group of Vines Golf Club members recently went on their annual weekend golf trip and the
course to be played on the Saturday was the Waikerie Golf Club in the Riverland. Everybody had
arrived and were gathered around the 1st tee getting ready to start the round.
One of the group, who to protect his identity we'll call Denzel, turned on his GPS, confident that
he had downloaded the courses that we would be playing over the weekend. He got somewhat
of a surprise when his GPS told him that the first hole, a Par 4, was 999 metres long. The tee
sign only said 400 metres, what was going on?
Unfortunately Denzel had downloaded the course information for the Waikare Golf Club in New
Zealand! Waikare is about an hours drive from Auckland and roughly 2,600 kms from Waikerie
in South Australia.
No wonder it was going to be a long hole!
A WORD FROM THE GIRLS…from Denise Walters Vice President
A wonderful week of fine weather was enjoyed by all ladies who entered the Foursome
Championships; commencing the 17th September. I believe it is the first year for some time
that we have not had inclement weather for the finals. Congratulations to Jan James/Cathy
Hayward (A Grade), Lil Maddern/Kathy Walsh (B Grade), Helen Collis/Terry Smooker
(C Grade) for winning their respective grades and to the runners-up, commiserations (there is
always next year girls). We had a wonderful gallery on the final day, so thank you everyone for
your support. The afternoon was capped off by the presentation of trophies/flowers and nibbles
were provided for those who stayed. Thanks to the Women’s Committee for organizing the day
and to Lil Maddern for taking the photos.
Wow!!!!!!!!!! Not even members yet, but that did not stop some of our new “Give Golf a Go”
Ladies from kicking up their heels at the recent “Shady Deals” night at the Club. I got a leave
pass for and hour or so, so I joined them. They love the fact that our club seems to have so
many social functions, so I am sure we will see them again.
The 5 weeks of “Ladies Give Golf a Go” have now concluded and to date, a special
membership offer has been taken up by approximately twelve ladies. Members of the Women’s
Committee and other willing helpers have gone out onto the course with these ladies to explain
rules and etiquette and to generally support and encourage them. So girls, if you see some new
faces around the club in the ensuing weeks, please say “hello” and ask how they are hitting. One
lady is “dead keen”, she turned up last Thursday (might I add, the only one) on the coldest,
wettest October day for years, ready for play. When the rain ceased momentarily, Marienne Hall
and I ventured out for 3 holes with this lady, then the sky blackened and we opted out, but not
our beginner, she continued on. I am impressed and WELL DONE TO SUE DOLLING.
At our recent GSA Open Day on the 4th October we hosted a field of 88 women including 40
visitors from fourteen different Clubs…a good time to advertise our “Vines Week”. It was a
great day and everyone was very impressed with the condition of our course. Well done Rob
and Staff.
Tuesday the 23rd October sees the end of the 2012 Winter Season for the Women. We will
hold our Presentation Day which will be attended by some 90 ladies. Gretta Haylock (Life
Member) will be in attendance and we will be addressed by our Club President (Jan James),
General Manager (Neil Mackenzie) and Vice-President Course (Russell Virgo).
We wish Chris Creese (Past Ladies President) who is ill in Flinders Hospital, a speedy
recovery. Hope to have you back with us real soon.
Today the 15th October I played in the Club Advantage Cup at Mt Osmond. My fellow
teammates were Marienne Hall, Bev Hill and the one and only HG (Honest Geoff) Downey.
Geoff’s record of golfing accidents is well documented and he seems hell bent
on keeping them going, with taking a very heavy fall down a very steep hill,
needless to say his ball shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Help
came from everywhere, with the group behind bringing him back to the top of
the hill in their buggy.
He was then transferred to a green keeper’s truck and taken back to the clubhouse for medical
attention. He was very lucky, two arms badly skun, but nothing broken, maybe dented pride. He
spent the remainder of the day reading the paper with beer in hand, waiting for the field to come
in for lunch. HG, next time if you don’t want to play with three girls “say so”, don’t throw
yourself of a cliff.

Pogona are a genus of lizards containing seven species, which are often
known by the common name bearded dragons. The term "bearded dragon"
is most commonly used to describe the Central Bearded Dragon. Members
of this genus live in the arid, rocky, semi-desert regions and dry open
woodlands of Australia. They are adept climbers, spending time on
branches and in bushes and spend time near human habitation. Pogona bask
on rocks and exposed branches in the mornings and afternoons. The species
are found throughout Australia.
Got to tell Paddy’s wife…but be discreet
Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O'Leary's apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on
a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen
brother, the other five continue playing standing up.
Michael O'Connor looks around and asks, 'Oh, me boys, someone's got to tell Paddy's wife. Who
will it be?'
They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle,
don't make a bad situation any worse.
'Discreet??? I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name. Leave
it to me.'
Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door. Mrs. Murphy answers, and asks
what he wants.
Gallagher declares, 'Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home.'
'Tell him to drop dead!' says Murphy's wife.
'I'll go tell him.' says Gallagher.

From an anonymous source…
“Who hit the ball into the new practice bunker (alongside the 3rd) just after it was first excavated,
long before the addition of sand?”
“Who hit 7 trees with 7 hits?”
