Letter From the General Manager
The summer is winding down and school is just around the corner,
but the Club still has lots of summer season activities coming. The pool
continues to bring enjoyment for the whole family with hours slightly
adjusted when school begins. We continue to bring you great value with
Friday Nights at the Pool. This month features live music by Club favorites
Hoppie Vaughn and Tim Martin, August 1st & 15th respectively. The 8th, 22nd and 29th will
feature family movies at our “Dive-In Theater”. Of course, we will feature beer and cocktail
specials, and our Friday Night Buffet. And the 15th and 16th hail the return of our Adult
Youth Campout. On the 29th, Seafood Night is back by popular demand.
Thank you to all who sponsored new members this spring and fall. We have added 185
new members (including 96 Trial members) since March of this year. We could not have done
this without you. As we continue to see improvements on our course and in our service, we
invite you to refer and guest potential members to encourage participation at the Club. As
members, you are our top resource for referrals: you know the Club, the membership, and the
people who would most enjoy what we have to offer. We in turn commit to provide you with
unique experiences, excellent amenities and the best value in Roanoke!
When it comes to added value, we are continuously trying new activities and
opportunities for our membership to enjoy. This month, we will expand your Club’s offerings
with a day trip to King’s Dominion on August 18th. As we move into the fall, we will also be
offering other day trips and activities including Line Dancing lessons starting in September and
a Sinkland Farms visit in October. Sign up early and let us know what other kinds of activities
you would like to see the Club offer.
We could never talk about summer without mentioning our amazing Swim Team.
Though meets continue at the time of printing, we are currently undefeated and going strong
this season with over 200 swimmers. The team spirit built among the swim team members, the
truest sense of community displayed constantly, and the good natured competition make your
Club a household name among swimmers in the Roanoke Valley. That alone makes the Hound
Dogs Swim Team winners. Thank you to all who supported the team through transportation,
volunteerism, participation in Potluck & Pies, and cheering on all who represented your Club.
You are appreciated and are definitely champions in your own right.
To all our members, we thank you for your patronage and your ongoing loyalty to
Hunting Hills. See you at your Club!

Turn to the Target
If you’ve heard me teaching on the driving range or taken a lesson, you may
have heard me use the phrase, “Let’s take the arms out of the swing.” This sentence is
powerful but can be confusing to grasp. The idea is that the arms are attached to the
torso at the shoulders and that the movement of the shoulders will carry the arms
throughout the golf swing. We need to start thinking about a coil that starts with the
hips, goes up to the torso and finally the arms. If the hips coil, this will move the torso
and in turn cause the arms to fall into the right positions.
Most amateur golfers don’t get near enough hip rotation during their swings and consequently use
too much arms when trying to hit the golf ball. This is a powerless move that hinders consistency as well.
The next time you are practicing on the range, focus on turning your hips to the target on every swing. Each
follow-through should end with the belt buckle facing the target. You will notice that this rotation of the
hips will pull the rest of the body through the golf shot. Your sequencing will improve as well as your
consistency. Turn to the target and watch your shots fly!
See you in the fairway!
