Lochmoor Club is rich with tradition and I am very honored to be the Club’s 92nd President. Thank you to Pete Cracchiolo, our past president who led your board through many challenging moments all with the grace, composure and experience of a professional. Thank you Pete. While he will be out of sight, he’s never out of mind. Mike Stavale has given his heart and soul to the betterment of Lochmoor and I can’t thank him enough for his eight and one half years of service in the boardroom and for his ability to get things done; thanks Dude. Thank you to all the past presidents who attended the president’s fun day and or the annual meeting. It is a special group of leaders who all did their best making Lochmoor the jewel it is and I appreciate your words of wisdom and continued passion for our Club. Congratulations are in order for Mark Zmyslowski who was re elected for a three-year term on the board and to Mr. Joe Fikany and Mr. Keith Schatko for their election to the board. I want to thank Mr. Kevin Kain and Mr. Mike Wickham for running for the board this year. We are very fortunate to have members like Kevin and Mike. It is my pleasure to announce that Mr. Rick Granger has been elected your new club treasurer and Mr. Jack Fowler has agreed to return as your club secretary. For those of you who did not attend the September 9th annual meeting, the club introduced several new members to the clubs team including Mr. Mike Mulkey, your new Greens and Grounds Superintendent, Mr. Jim Wilson, your new Head Golf Professional, Mr. Mark Sobieralski, your new Head Tennis Professional and Patty Sokolnicki, our new Controller. We are very fortunate to have these individuals in these key roles. Looking forward, this board will continue to be fiscally responsible while delivering the best possible products and services that you have come to expect from Lochmoor. We are finalizing the ’09 budget as of this writing and continuously look for new ways to drive revenue through club utilization while keeping the expenses in line with the revenues. I am pleased to announce that Platform Tennis “Paddle” is back at Lochmoor. Thanks to Courtenay Kotas, Steve Rogers, and Jeff Neuenschwander who will be chairing the committee, they have already lined up some key dates and events to kick the season off. No experience necessary. For more details, see the article and ad in this month’s Fairway. It has always been my belief that we have the best Club in the community. Please share the “Lochmoor” experience with someone new this year. It will make a difference. We are prepared to meet the challenges ahead of us and are excited about being one of the few clubs in southeastern Michigan who will be debt free in early ’09. In closing, please mark your calendars for Saturday October 11th, which is the Presidents Ball honoring Mr. Pete Cracchiolo. It’s a great party and don’t miss the traditional “president pour”. This is the most important preventative maintenance practice that we perform all year. Many of you may be wondering why we have to aerify the greens when they are in such good condition. Aerification is a very stressful process for the greens and they need to be healthy enough to hold up to the process itself. The reason that we aerify in the spring and fall is because we are preparing the grass for the upcoming stressful periods that they will face in the summer and winter. Many of you may not know the reasons why aerification is necessary. Here is a list of some of the most important ones: a) relives soil compaction; b) allows deeper, faster penetration of water, air, topdressing sand, fertilizer, and pesticides into the root zone; c) allows atmospheric release of toxic gases (e.g., carbon dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide) from the root zone; d) improves surface drainage to help dry out saturated soils and prevent formation of puddles; e) increases rooting by constructing a root zone more conductive for active root growth; f) improves turf resiliency and soil cushioning; g) the physical removal of un-wanted organic matter from the upper portion of the root zone. The most important reason that aerification is necessary is because oxygen is required by the plants to carry out respiration, which is the conversion of stored food to energy. Respiration takes place in the roots and, therefore, good air exchange in the upper soil profile is vital to plant survival. Aerification is the only process by which oxygen can be incorporated into the soil. The surprising thing about aerifying is that when we do greens we only actually disrupt about 10% of the surface area. I’m sure that many of you feel that it is much more than this when you are putting on them, but it is true. Studies have also shown that at least 20% of the surface area of a green needs to be aerified to handle the regular stresses of a golf season. Turf that is not maintained on an aerification program will result in a gradual reduction in turf quality, thin grass stands, and more problems with weed encroachment, and diseases. Thank you for your cooperation during this important process. Fairway Magazine By Debbie Shumaker It is hard to believe August has come and gone. The days are shorter and the yellow jackets have been driving people crazy for a few weeks now. Being rid of those pesky bugs is one of the good things about the onset of cooler weather and frosty mornings. Freezing temperatures also signals time to cut back and dig up those Amorphophallus bulbs in anticipation of their incredible winter flowers. Ms. Nicholl, don’t forget to share the progress with Ms. Badalamenti. I trust you’re going to enjoy. Many thanks to Ms. Pierron for those crazy bulbs. What an incredibly beautiful and busy summer we had here at Lochmoor. As you may have noticed, we did a little re-landscaping on the corner of Vernier and Sunningdale. The main reason this project was undertaken was to improve visibility for traffic coming off of Sunningdale and turning onto Vernier. We adjusted the position of our fence so you have a much clearer view when making that left turn. The bonus is that the new ornamental steel fence looks much nicer and sets off the rock wall with the Lochmoor Club name. On the inside of the fence on the 4 green side we’ve planted some new privet to extend the existing hedge toward the corner. Two more trees will be planted to complete the look. The planting of the trees won’t happen until spring however, because we wanted to plant good sized specimens and they cannot be dug until next April. As always, good things are worth waiting for. Something else you might want to look out for is another episode of Points of Horticulture on the Grosse Pointe Cable channel 3 featuring the gardens of Lochmoor. As I write this, the show taping hasn’t happened yet but if all goes according to plan it should air in early October. Because it’s October, I thought I’d share a fun project you can do with the young ones (or by yourself for that matter). There are not many flowers blooming this time of year so you might as well make some really cool ghosts! Spooky Lochmoor Ghosts You will need: • Some cheese cloth (Joann’s, Michaels or the grocery store), • A spray bottle filled with: 1 part Elmer’s Glue, 1 part of water and ½ part rubbing alcohol • Googley eyes (or a marker to draw them), • A form, I used a 20 oz water bottle with a pear duct taped on the top. A pear, wide end up, has the same shape as a head! Who knew?! • 1 or 2 pipe cleaners or some wire Tape the pear (or a ball or whatever you want to use) to the neck of the bottle. A small piece of saran wrap over the pear “head” makes for easy ghost removal. Wrap the wire around the neck of the bottle to form arms. Position wires to make arms doing any thing you choose (I also put some little stones in the bottle to weight it and keep it from falling over.) Place your little ghost form on a surface you don’t mind getting messy. Use pieces of cheesecloth about 1 foot wide and 1-½ feet long. Please note: this is not a science, it’s fun! No need to measure! Drape the cheesecloth over your ghostly form. I used 2 or 3 layers….it should be kind of see through and spooky. Spray your ghost with your water, glue and alcohol mix until saturated. Add googley eyes. Let dry overnight. When dry, remove ghost from form. Draw on eyes if necessary. It should be stiff enough to stand on it’s own. It seams to me you could do all sorts of things to “personalize” your ghosts. How ‘bout a ghost family that looks like your own? Have Fun! Fitness Center Policy Change Effective immediately, the Fitness Center will be accessible exclusively for Lochmoor Club members. Guests along with Annual Tennis members will not be allowed access to the facility. www.lochmoorclub.com 8 Fairway Magazine Culinary Corner Tennis Matters The “Chef’s Garden” feature will be or has come to an abrupt halt with the first frost of season. My garden will be composted and turned over bringing the 2008-growing season to an end. I will cut back and heavily mulch any perennials herbs that can survive the artic air that will inevitably move in for the winter. The kitchen ran numerous different “Chef’s Garden” features over the spring and summer seasons and the most popular was by far the ‘tomato and fresh mozzarella cheese’ alternate salad in which we laced with a good quality extra virgin olive oil, reduced aged balsamic vinegar, chiffonade cut fresh basil. I would like to thank all of you that kept requesting it. I considered it a fine compliment. I am extremely excited to come on board as Lochmoor’s seventh head tennis professional. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead the program and am currently working on completing the staff. The brochures for the tennis program came out on Friday, September 5th. When I tell fellow Lochmoor members that I play this sport called “paddle”…. they have a puzzled look on their face, ask me what it is, and then their jaws drop when I tell them that we actually have 2 courts located next to the indoor tennis house. Well, I was fortunate enough to learn this sport 18 years ago from my father who was an active player with other fellow Lochmoor members back in its heyday (most of whom were golfers believe it or not)! I truly love the sport and have not only had great competition over the years, but have enjoyed the camaraderie and the friends that I have met from traveling to other areas of the country. The game is played on an elevated aluminum deck, ¼ Hope to see you, the size of a tennis court and is surrounded by a 12’ high Courtenay superstructure with taut, 16-gauge “chicken wire” fencing which allows play off the walls, as in racquetball and squash. The base of a platform tennis court is usually enclosed, allowing for a heating system beneath the deck (propane, natural gas or kerosene.) The heating system melts ice off the deck, allowing play in all weather conditions. As most courts have lights, the game can be enjoyed day or night. Platform tennis paddles are made of a composite material with aerodynamic holes drilled in the head. Paddles are approximately 18” long. The spongy, rubber ball measures 2.5” in diameter. A flocking material on its exterior keeps the ball from skidding. Players often refer to platform tennis as “paddle”, as in “Are you playing paddle tonight?” With the re-emergence of paddle tennis on the West Coast (basically, a downsized game of tennis) this has many people confused. To further the problem, there is paddle ball (an urban sport played against a single wall) and paddle (much like paddle tennis). Well, I want to let you know that myself and other members are trying to get a resurgence of a paddle program at Lochmoor which at one time (70’s through the 80’s) was a popular winter sport at our club. www.lochmoorclub.com 10 Fairway Magazine Lochmoor Seniors By Morgan Whitney The Tigers were fading, the Lions were coming out with their usual pre-season misguided optimism, Kwame was going down, Michigan was in it’s unending depression, and Obama was talking about the need for “sharing”. He had avenged the Alamo, invaded Mexico, and settled the war in return for Texas, present day Arizona, New Mexico, parts of Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and all of California. For good measure, he negotiated for what is now the state of Washington and Oregon from the British at no cost. These actions expanded the country by 40%. He tried to buy Cuber (as they say it in Noo Yawk), but Spain wouldn’t sell. Now that was kicking some serious butt. Which leads us to the golf competition. We may be old, but we like to beat up our friends. In the Senior Flight, the team of Joe Lucido, Tom Phipps Larry Stephens, and Clancy Wudcoski edged their competition with a two man best ball score of 124.
