TheGanaraska News
Spring (April– July 2016)
President’s Report by Bob Bowles
The Ganaraska Trail makes its way across Simcoe County
as it runs from Port Hope on Lake Ontario to Glen Huron
where it meets the Bruce Trail with side trails to Midland and
Wasaga Beach. The forests in Simcoe County make up
some of the nicest places to hike along the trail. The trail
runs through places like Scout Valley in Orillia and then over
the Oro Moraine through several Simcoe County Forests
then through the 1780 ha. Copeland Forest Resource
Management Area, the largest tract of crown land left in
Southern Ontario. This second-growth forest on the Oro
Moraine is used by Nordic skiers (13 km of expert, 10.9 km
of intermediate and 1.5 km of beginner trails in this area), all
track-set with signs prohibiting pedestrians and dogs. It is
also used by hikers, hunters, horseback riders, bird
watchers, naturalists, recreational walkers, dog walkers,
snowshoeing enthusiasts, and in recent years many
mountain bikers. Add to that list dirt bikers, four-wheelers
and even hummer tours and you have high usage of the
lattice network of trails through this beautiful forest. This is
also true for all the Simcoe County Forests where mountain
bikers have constructed many trails through the forests that
zigzag back and forth over rocks and between trees to give
them more distance as they ride their bikes over the forest
floor compacting the earth and tearing the beautiful mosses
and lichens from the rocks that they use as obstacles and
jumps in their high energy recreation that has high impact on
the forest ecology. Many new bike trails in the Simcoe
County Forests are marked by large blotches of red paint on
the bark of nearby trees giving the forest a very unnatural
appearance. Add to this the heavy impact of logging of the
red pine plantations by the county and you have a forest that
is taking on a whole new appearance.
Ten years ago we realized that the Golden Horseshoe area
around the Greater Toronto Area was one of the fastest
growing regions in North America. The Greenbelt Protection
Plan passed in February 2005 protected nearly 2 million
acres of valuable land and water, curbing urban sprawl,
protecting woodlands as natural carbon sinks, preserving
agricultural lands and protecting clean water systems from
wetlands and the Oak Ridges Moraine south of our area.
Now, ten years later, this greenbelt protection area needs to
be extended north to protect areas like the Minesing
Wetlands, the Oro Moraine areas like Copeland Forest and
Scout Valley. In fact, the protection should extend north to
include all of the Lake Simcoe watershed area which would
also include Carden Alvar and the Talbot River system. We
need to protect the clean water aquifers in these areas
improving the quality of water in Lake Simcoe and Georgian
Bay but most of all protecting our freshwater sources of
drinking water. This would limit some of the housing
development projects in some areas like along Willow Creek
in Minesing Wetlands and Snow Valley, the only known
location in Canada for the rare Hine’s Emerald dragonfly, a
species very sensitive to water quality. It would need to limit
some of the logging operations in Simcoe County where our
woodlands are below the acceptable limits and the
recreational activities in places like Copeland Forest with
very sensitive headwaters. It also needs to limit the
construction of new recreational trails so that we don’t end
up with a lattice work of forest trails which will fragment the
forest resulting in no forest in the end. This is something to
think about the next time you hike along our trails through
the forests on the Oro Moraine.
These forests on the Oro Moraine need to be protected, not
for the many users and stakeholders mentioned above but
because like other moraines, that were formed 13,000 years
ago with the melting of the Wisconsin Glacier, They consist
of limestone and sand deposits over aquifers that are the
source of our freshwater. The Copeland Forests on the
south edge of the Oro Moraine form the headwaters of the
Sturgeon River, Coldwater River and Willow Creek
watersheds. I first became aware of the great importance of
these aquifers at the base of the moraine with my work to
protect Mill Creek and Scout Valley with its freshwater seeps
and springs at the north end of the Oro Moraine at Orillia.
There are many other streams of watersheds along the Oro
Moraine between these two locations like Burls Creeks,
Hawkestone Creek, Bluffs Creek and Bass Lake (source of
the North River) just to mention a few. These all provide
cold, clean, fresh water to either the Lake Simcoe or
Georgian Bay watersheds and protect the quality of our
freshwater.
Ontario Trails Act (Bill 100) and Landowners
Landowners who graciously allow a trail on their
property should not be alarmed by this proposed Bill,
as it has no bearing on any handshake or written
agreements the GHTA has with its landowners, and
that, contrary to what has been suggested by the
Ontario Landowner's Association, the granting of
easements is completely voluntary on the part of
the landowner.

Our Mission Statement
KAWARTHA
a. To protect the conservation and appreciation
of nature;
We have had an interesting winter weather-wise,
but most of our hikes have gone ahead and were
enjoyed by many.
b. To establish and maintain a hiking trail for
public use from the said Town of Port Hope to
the Bruce Trail near Collingwood, and
The Kawartha Chapter has been very lucky to
have several people who volunteered their time
and energy to have our hiking club run smoothly.
I would like to take this time to thank each of
them publicly for their time and effort from all of
us who hike regularly. Marjorie and Tony are our
hike co-coordinators and they are able to get hike
leaders for two hikes a week, ten months a year,
and they help people find a hike if needed as
well. Their efforts are much appreciated. Our
secretary-treasurer Diane is able to keep track of
monies and minutes, and can find info from
previous meetings with what seems like ease and
that sure saves me time; I really appreciate her
expertise. Our membership guy Nick does a
great job by welcoming new members and
keeping track of our membership list. Our trail
director and email list person Rob does a great
job keeping the email list up-to-date and accurate
which is vital for communication. Eveline, our
past president, tries to keep me straight on what I
should be doing, and this is a hard task for any
person and appreciated; and last but not least is
our public relations person Anne who sure talks
up the club whenever she can and gets new
people enquiring about the club on a regular
basis. We also have an x-officio person whose
name is Vince and he is our computer guru. He
keeps our photo journal, hike schedule and a
copy of the newsletter electronically so people
can quickly check when and where the hikes are,
with updated info if there have been changes. For
those who want to check this out, go to:
c. To promote similar trails in other areas as
may be determined.
Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association Inc.
Honorary Members
Bruce and Dianne Cox
On Saturday, February, 13th Bruce and Dianne
Cox were presented with a plaque by Nicole
Corbeil to commemorate their being made
Honorary Members of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail
Association. Bruce was a hike leader for the Pine
Ridge Hiking Club for several years until his
knees gave out (parachuting into Holland for a
number of years, the last at the age of 80, as part
of a re-enactment of the relief of Holland by the
allies, may have had something to do with this!).
For the past 20 years Bruce and Dianne have
hosted the PRHC for lunch at their lovely log
house, built by Bruce, overlooking Rice Lake.
This recognition of their hospitality is well
deserved.

On Feb 3rd we had a fun pizza and travelogue
evening where two people talked about their
travels, Sylvia Cashmore et al talked about their
trip to Austria and Karin Sinclair spoke about their
hikes in Italy. This evening was so enjoyable we
decided to do another on March 30, at the same
place, and this will be potluck. The talks will
include Alaska and Peru. Our annual general
meeting will be on Wednesday May 25/16,
please plan on attending.

MAD RIVER
MIDLAND (cont’d)
Last fall, we had reports that the Mad River
section of the Ganaraska Trail, between Utopia
and westerly cairn of the Ganaraska Trail in Glen
Huron, was in dire need of some TLC. Since the
Mad River club did not have the capacity of doing
the maintenance on this 50 km section of
Ganaraska Trail, adjacent clubs came to the
rescue, and thanks to the excellent weather in
the late fall, and with the help of many volunteers,
we managed to bring the trail back into shape ...
for the most part.
Pre-Christmas “Walk Off The Stress” and afterChristmas “Walk Off The Turkey” hikes were all
great! We also enjoyed a visit from Mr. & Mrs.
Claus at our annual Christmas get-together.
The late start of the winter also allowed us to
assist the Mad River Ganaraska Hiking club with
their trail maintenance. Members from the
Midland, Wasaga Beach and Barrie clubs, as well
as Ganaraska president Bob Bowles, helped out
on a total of 6 trail maintenance days. Thanks to
all who helped.
In total we organized 6 trail maintenance days
between the end of October and mid November
and reblazed 38 km.
The snow finally came, and everybody was
happy. Snowshoeing is so popular. Wednesday
and Sunday hikes bring out 20+ snow lovers. Our
local “Winter Wonderland Forests” hikes are a
true mental and physical joy.
We had to deal with wind storm damage, a
myriad of new trails in the Brentwood Forest after
a controlled forest fire, new fencing at the
Glencairn Conservation Are, hydro poles that had
been replaced, and we cleaned up around the
cairn, etc. Twenty five volunteers from the
Midland, Wasaga Beach, Mad River and Barrie
clubs, as well as Ganaraska President, Bob
Bowles, contributed a total of 36 volunteer days
to bring the trail from km 11.9 in New Lowell to
the cairn in Glen Huron, where the Ganaraska
meets the Bruce Trail, back in shape. Many
thanks to all volunteers, job well done!
The New Year’s Day snow/hike and soup party
was again enjoyed by 30+ people. Many thanks
to Margaret for hosting this annual affair. Outings
were also enjoyed at the Laking Family Woodlot,
Copeland Forest (22 people) and many others.
Our outing to the Laking Family Woodlot
Unfortunately, we have not found a solution yet
for the section from km 0 in Utopia (end of Barrie
section) to New Lowell. This section currently
follows the now fully abandoned and badly
overgrown Barrie-Collingwood railway line. We
may need to organize a re-route for this section.
In the interim, this section of the Ganaraska Trail
remains closed.

The Killbear Winter Weekend was again a blast.
The weather was mild and sunny and there was
enough snow to snowshoe along the beautiful
Killbear Provincial Park trails and waterfront.
Scenery is fantastic. Several 2-3 hour outings
challenged us all. Some other “fun” activities
added to this wonderful time, such as the nonstop camp fire which was so well attended by our
“Fireman” Gary and wife Dusanka.
MIDLAND
Midland Hikers have enjoyed a great fall and
winter hiking life. Due to a late start of the winter,
participation increased on many late fall hiking
outings. We meandered through the “naked”
forest and explored many remote areas.

ORILLIA (cont’d)
We had sausages on the grill, maple syrup taffy
pulling, a Mr. And Mrs. Snowman/Woman
building and decorating, “Hawaiian” beach girls
and dancing, games, cards, and lots of food and
camaraderie and much more. Next year has now
been booked for Feb 3 – 8, 2017. Contact Frieda
frieda.baldwin@rogers.com if interested.
Thursday hike/snowshoe Barrie /Orillia
combined are proving to be popular as well
as Saturdays.
Our membership is improving slowly,
everyone in the club is asked to encourage
friends to come out and join us. We have a
variety of lengths and time slots to suit
everyone. Our spring schedule will have a
variety of fun hike some more challenging
than others. Starting April 2 trip to DeVillers
sugar bush in Lafontaine with or without
snow. As hikers look in the newsletter at
scheduled hikes, if they are not able to attend
to their club hike, they are always welcomed
at another club, only need to call hike leader
for directions. Trail maintenance will be
scheduled for early spring Tuesday evening
starting at 6, all members are asked to help
out, and as a group it is easier and more fun.
Wishing everyone great hikes on our
beautiful trails.
Marion Brophy
We are looking forward to a busy Spring-Summer
Schedule, with many interesting hikes and
camping outings, as well as the very popular
biking, canoeing/kayak outings.
Starting April 2016 Wednesday Hikes have
been changed to TUESDAY meeting time
10am at Zellers Parking Lot.
Life is good when you are part of the Midland
Hiking Group.

ORO-MEDONTE
The Orillia club has enjoyed various winter
activities as the weather permitted. Tuesday
afternoon hike\snowshoe has proven popular;
anyone wanting to join Paul are reminded to call
him before hand.
Membership in the Oro-Medonte Club remains
solid with a few new members joining. We offer a
variety of hikes. On Sundays the local area is
explored in 2 hour outings. On Mondays full day
out of town excursions are offered, ranging from
Beausoleil Island in the North to Forks of the
Credit in the South. On Thursdays a new short 1
hour walk is offered.

PINE RIDGE
With over 20 members now available to lead
hikes, we enjoy a varied programme of
established favorites and new destinations to
appeal to our growing membership.
The winter season has consisted of numerous
cross-country ski and snowshoe outings. In
February our annual potluck supper and
moonlight ski was enjoyed.
Hiking conditions this winter have ranged widely
from balmy mildness to multi-layering cold, whilst
sufficient snow cover does not always coincide
with scheduled plans to snow-shoe. One
scheduled January hike was unfortunately but
wisely cancelled due to heavy rain and excessive
surface water.
Sadly, a deteriorating illness led to the passing of
a long-time club member late last year; Malcolm
Kidd’s Scottish-accented humour and friendly
companionship are missed by those fortunate to
have known him well.
Soon the spring schedule will begin and the trail
maintenance will be tackled with our popular Trail
Day scheduled for Friday April 22 (Earth Day).
The target this year will be Copeland Forest and
our section of the Ganaraska Trail. We look
forward to the arrival of spring and new hikers
joining us as we explore new trails. If you would
like to accompany us we are always delighted to
welcome new friends.
I would like to close by thanking some important
people who have made my tenure as President
of the Oro-Medonte Club very enjoyable. All of
the efforts of the executive members have been
greatly appreciated in tackling any task requested
and preparing and carrying out a busy schedule.
Special mention must go to Bob & Lois Marshall
for their valuable assistance and help the last few
years. A note of thanks to Bob Bowles for
guidance on issues during my term. Best wishes
to Christine Cornu who will be taking over
leadership of the club.
We look forward to our annual evening of
illustrated hike talks on April 10th. Included will be
presentations on the 22-strong group hike holiday
to Wales last September, individual trips to
Turkey and Patagonia, and multi-day hiking
options at Frontenac Provincial Park.
Later in spring a sizeable group of club members
will enjoy hiking the trails of the Collingwood area
from May 16-19th, thanks to planning by Jim
Osborne, Pam Callus, John Kurowski and
Glenda Jackson.

WASAGA BEACH (cont’d)
WASAGA BEACH
Many thanks to Bob Bowles for the excellent
article on LYME DISEASE in the last issue. I
have researched LYME thoroughly as I have
had infected family in the US at LYME
ground zero. Bob has uncovered even more
recent information. Hikers and campers
beware. This is very real, insidious and
deadly. Also, pets can easily bring ticks into
your home. In general, very few doctors know
much about LYME.
Prizes were later awarded at the Christmas
pot luck to Harry Regu, Carolyn Moos, Jayne
Edwards and Vicky Harris.
Our Christmas pot luck was held at the
Wasaga arena in December. As usual there
were end to end tables of delectable foods.
Our end-to-end hiking/badge program is
approximately 50 km, with 9 sections. Over
65 people have accomplished the feat, over
time. Three more badges were awarded to
Marty Bruce, Louise Wiersma and Ellie
Breitenfeld. The party ended with draws for
all the poinsettias.
After 2 bitterly cold winters, we seem to be
having a major bout of global warming.
Freezing rain, melting ice, blowing snow has
meant a lot of cancellations. Georgian Bay is
almost entirely open for the formation of
precipitation.
One of our members was honoured with the
"Extraordinary People Award Promoting
Nature and Cultural History". We are proud of
you Marilyn Beecroft.
Our
regular
hikes/snowshoeing
are
Wednesday at 9:30am. Our valiant leaders
are Irene, Brigette, Joseph, Harry, Bertram,
Bill, John Boyle, Shirl and Guenter. Leisurely
Lois Amblers hikes are on the same day,
same time. Thanks to leaders Lois and Doris.
Gloria Thompson
However, it was a perfect winter day, blue
and sunny skies for Bertram’s outdoor
snowshoe and BBQ in January. There was a
great turnout. Thank you Bertram and Ida for
all your meticulous preparations.
Spring Directors Meeting
Saturday, April 16, 2016
9:30 a.m.
Regent United Church
175 Oxford Street, Orillia
We have a new title for our hike leader
Bill.....Detective
"Colombo"
Crawford.
Joseph's bike was stolen on a bike day.
Through thoughtful and cool deductive
reasoning, the bike was found, in the woods,
filthy but functioning.
Please arrive at 9:00 a.m. and socialize with the
members over coffee and donuts.
Directions: From Hwy. 11, turn onto Hwy. 12
east, Gill Street, then right on Oxford. Those
coming via Hwy. 12, take Hwy. 12 west to Forest
Avenue, turn right on Forest, then left on Oxford.
The Wasaga Santa Parade was held in Late
November on a warm day. Our hiking club
had a major presence again, fully outfitted in
costume and sweets.
